Thank you for the video! I started photography as a hobby a few months ago, got a nikon dx camera and your channel helped me a great deal
Woow, this was my only lens that I've used for years some time back. So cool to see a review on here about it :) After years of usage and now with more knowledge looking back, I can completely confirm the review. I never noticed that creeping though (3:10), interesting to still learn new stuff here hahaha. Thanks for this cool review!
I love these old lens reviews Chris! Shows just how far manufacturers have come in the last few years. But there are some magnificently sharp, surprising and glorious manual focus prime lenses out there, from the 1970s and earlier, which can give modern lenses a good run for their money…maybe you can review some when you run out of the modern variety 🙂

Tbh, the less reviews i see of these lenses the better. Old Nikons are already expensive enough...
@tbrown2892

@@benni1015 I’d agree with you on these sorts of “older” auto zooms, which are generally pretty poor and offer none of the quirky glory of a 1960s manual prime like a Biotar, some Takumar’s and even the marvellous Vivitar 135 f2.8 close focusing. 🤓
@benni1015
2 жыл бұрын
@@tbrown2892 Ye, many many of these zooms are really poor. I had some Exakta zooms(not the east german ones, but from Cosina or Tokina, who bought the name rights) which had absolutly pathetic image quality, basically unusable at 210mm. Those are cheap shit. Pronlem is that original Nikon lenses from that time period are expensive like nothing else. Thee 50mm F1.4 can sometimes go for up to 200 Euros. The 135s F2.8 varies a bit but can go on sale for similar prices and don't get me talking on the 28mm or behold, the 24mm. So basically if you are on a budget, like i am, old Nikons are out of the way. So i usually look for third party lenses and there it is mostly the same. If the lens is not utter shit(like some of the rmc tokina primes) and it is for Nikon it is expensive. So i looked at nearly every option i have in terms of adapting lenses and unfortunatly the only lenses adapdable onto Nikon are Tamrons Adaptall lenses and even those command disgusting prices for the better option(700 Euros for a 180mm F2.5, for the same money i can get a 70-200 f2.8 with autofocus and image stablization). However those go sometimes for a bit cheaper, especially the zooms which are pretty fantastic. 60-300 for 50 bux was a great deal for me. Still, if someone wants cheap lenses then Nikon is certainly not the place to look at.

I would love to know which one would be good for the D5600.
I just ordered a Nikon D3000 with this lens as my first DSLR camera. It will be perfect for learning the craft!
I just bought a used d3500 with a 18-55 lens to get me into photography. Really interested in the 105 lens. Noticed you do a lot of lens reviews. Soooo you got yourself another subscriber 🥳 Thanks for the review
Interesting to see a retrospective review of this lens. I remember that back in the day, it was a commonly accepted wisdom that as a starter DSLR kit, you should get this with the D5100 and you'll be set for... however long you could withstand GAS. :D I never actually had one - jumped from the 18-55 to old AF-D lenses which would of course only focus manually on my initial D40, but I managed to snap up a 28-105 3.5-4.5 (originally the kit lens for the F100 of all things) for about 60 bucks and that was just THE BUSINESS for me for a very long time on DX bodies. Of course nowadays on high-res FX and Z bodies it falls down in the corners quite noticably... but on crop we didn't even see those corners, so the 28-105 was amazing value at the time if you knew what you were doing. Still, I guess the 18-105 must have been a very decent "do it all" kind of starter option for many people.
You are a really good story teller. Thanks.
This was my mainstay lens for a long time and still the lens I use when I go for a walk or whatever and don't want to deal with having to switch lenses. I actually got it as a kit lens at the time. Great little thing :) And it has held up great in the 5+ years I have owned it :)

This was my first lens on my first DSLR (the D90). I had a blast shooting that combo and have taken some of my favorite shots with it, even though I've collected far better lenses in the years.
That question was answered a long,long time ago,in this galaxy. Its a superb lens,no matter the price range,sharp,beautifull colors,contrast is great,only minus is a complex distortion,but i can live with that. Yep. I am a pro and i am using this lens every day for walkaraondds and paid gigs. It is cheap and expendable,with awesome optics.
I went with the Nikon 18-140mm F3.5 - 5.6 DX Lens. The extra range is nice and the lens is reasonably sharp for a kit lens.
Everyone posting reviews of the z9 and here I find a lens that I used extensively with my beloved Nikon d3100. I've moved to Fuji since then, but the value for money of these lenses is really good.
Would be awesome if you do more of this kind of lenses reviews.
Great vid! If you can test the new Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 it would be nice! I'm so excited to see if this lens is sharp. I would also love a review of the Samyang 85 1.5 Mk II, I think it could be a very sharp lens and with a wide aperture and not expansive.
This was the first lens I ever owned back in 2015, when I bought it in a kit with my D3200 for 450€. It was the best desicion I've ever made to start photography. I also think that it is really sharp at 18mm when I look at the pictures that I shoot then. So I used it really often for architecture and landscape photography. Now I have a D750 and way more lenses.

I would love to watch a Review of the Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 VR and the AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6 VR. How about the Idea, Chris?
Well, that was unexpected! The main lens I use with my D3300, besides an 50mm 1.4G, haha! One thing, I don't have the zoom creep on my copy. Maybe it's just a better batch? Thanks for the great review.
Used to own this lens a few years ago, and it served me well. Got some great images from it. From memory, your test results sound familiar. Worst mistake I ever made was trading it for a Sigma 18-300mm, which is a poorly built piece of utter crap (albeit quite sharp).
my dad bought a nikon d90 with this as as a kit lens and it was by far his most used lens until recently when he got a tamron 17-70 f/2.8. the lens has outlived the camera which now only works with manual lenses only
my first ever lens
Good vid as usual. Could you please review Nikon's 24-200 mm f/4 z lens?
This lens has been released long time ago, good to see pictures quality holding up. The newer 18-140 is supposed to be a better lens.
@steventhomas231

Yes its a better lens having used both. Better build VR and optics but not massively.
That squeak is not normal to be honest. The whirring sound is fine. That squeaking sound may be the signs of a worn/bad AF motor. I think that many of these lenses (due to their cost) lack some of the more advanced features of Nikon lenses of the day, like the Nano coating which helps with reflections and flaring (Nano coating is found on pretty much all new lenses these days from Nikon though but their newer lenses also cost a bit more too, even the cheaper kit lenses like the Z 16-50). But considering how cheap this lens can be purchased for, it's a decent travel zoom for an APS-C dslr or Nikon Z APSC camera . Curious how it satcks up against the 18-200 lens which I think is a bit older).
Eagerly awaiting you review of the new Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD Lens. Any idea when you will have one?
Hey Chris, are you planning to review newest Samyang release for Sony? The 50mm 1.4 mark II?
This is my dads "almost always on the camera" lens ❤
I used to love this on my d5100. The only downside being zoom creep was a real problem when carrying it about.

Also had it with my D5100, and yes also same problem. But enjoyed the lens and D5100 very much. I bought this back in 2011 and still works well in 2023. Now upgraded to a D5600, and bought some other lenses.
Had this lens until a few weeks back. Dunno what happened but the corners looked soft, out of focus and distorted all at once. Replaced it with a sigma 17-50 2.8 and now planning to get nikon's 85 1.8G.
Will you review the Nikkor Z 24-200mm lens?
mine dropped to bits around the edge of the rubber mount, the plastic ring cover came away along with another metal ring. Had a few years. Any idea which glue to use to bond the plastic to plastic.
Have you reviewed the 18-140mm lens? This one probably only has about 1 stop of actual VR improvement. Unless it's dead on my copy, it sometimes feels like there's really no VR even when it's on. Other than that, it's reasonably sharp and contrasty at f/5.6 at almost all focal lengths, it even won me a honorable mention at a Wikipedia contest. It's not the sharpest, but it's a lens I am quite fond of.
Hy Christopher, pleseeeee test Nikkor 55-200mm f5.6 VR II ,Fantastic lens, its sharpness is amazing
I am hoping for your review of the new Tamron 28-75 g2😊.
Just tried my copy of the lens - no lens creep. It would if you pushed it down but not by itself. I cant see any focus breathing either
"More weed every day" at 2 mins 20. Love it!
Do you know how to use extension rings to do macro with this lens? Thanks
That means if you point to the sky the lens zoom will rotate back by itself because the mechanism is too loose?
my copy of the lens doesn’t suffer the 3:30 problem, great
Wow Chris, this is a old DX Lens, back from the Nikon D90 Days, it was one of the Kitlenses for the D90. (2008) For 24 MP DX, i wouldn't use it. The 18-70 DX was the better Kitlens, it was "bundled" with the Nikon D70(s) and D80 back into the heyday. (2004-2006) Ah, you had that 2nd one of "smoke weed every day" here on your channel again. :D

Honestly, the lens lives on my father's D5300. If it's just for family photos, friends, that sort of thing in nature, I think it's perfectly fine. It may not be the sharpest lens, but the colour reproduction and tones it very nice for what it is.

Pretty much any Nikon DX (APS-C) camera since year 2000 will work with it. The lens has its own AF-motor so you don't have to worry about the camera having an AF motor. At a budget, the D3500 would suffice for video (1080p 60FPS). However, at twice the price, the Z50 would be great, giving you options for 4K and 120 FPS (it would require an FTZ adapter for these old lenses though).

Considering that 1) all the native f mount cameras have poor video performance 2) the lens isn't that wide angle if you want to vlog with it 3) it exhibits significant focus breathing and 4) the autofocus motor will be audible in your footage I'm not sure it's worth getting this for video, even if it is cheap
