Replace a broken Nikon / Nikkor AF-S 18-105 mm VR bayonet mount.
You can use similar procedure for the following lenses:
- Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Version I, II, and VR
- Nikon AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

I so appreciate the simplicity of this video. No unnecessary graphics, no introduction that takes up 5 minute to actually start showing what the title said it would, no sharing of any personal stories that were uncalled for, no stalling of any kind. It showed exactly what I needed and nothing more. Now my camera works! THANK YOU.
Great video. Thank you! Couple of points (having actually performed this fix on precisely this lens following this video). That tiny pin that is attached by a wire to the inner right of the lens (as unscrewed at 4:00 ) is a four-piece spring-loaded pin. If you pull gently on the ring, the wire can separate from the spring loaded pin. If this happens, it is only a matter of tiny knocks before the tiny black plastic insulator ring is fired across the room. Work in a clean space to avoid losing parts. If you do separate the wire from the spring loaded mount, you will need to solder the wire back on to the spring-loaded pin. Because the "open" spring makes it impossible to do this, thread a piece of cotton through the middle of the spring and tie it tight. Put the pieces back together, solder it up and then cut the cotton. The iFixit Essential ElectronicsTool Kit was extremely useful in replacing the broken mount ring.

What did you solder the wire back to? the tip of the pin? It's very hard to see in the videos

Btw, I have reassembled the pin to the ring which seems to eliminate the spring problem.
Great video, good clarity. Really nice to have such a close up view. Took me longer than I thought but everything works. Thanks again. Appreciate your effort.
this is LITERALLY the EXACT spot where my lens broke LOL i mean at this point are they meant to break this way? thanks for the video man
Your video was concise, easy to follow and well made. Thank you for the expenditure you saved me if I had shipped out the lens to be repaired. Kudos.
Thanks! Way better video quality and angle than all other tutorial videos. I can actually see what you're doing.
This is a great video - needs no words, super clear and works!! Recommend magnetised screwdrivers and attach spring before remounting ring so that the spring is only under tension when attached at both ends and so less likely to ping off!
Between your great video and my daughter's small dexterous hands, we were able to replace the bayonet mount ourselves. Thank you!
Be very careful of that wire. Mine broke too but was able to strip some of the wire and use the compression ring to replace it. Works again! I will never pack my wife's camera in checked bags again!!!!! :)
Fantastic, clear video! Tricky with all the tiny screws but worked perfectly. Thanks very much!
EXCELLENT video. Looks very easy when you did it. I found the tiny screws fiddly and took much longer, but worked brilliantly. I was quoted 60Pounds+VAT! Bayonet cost me 2.99 on Amazon. THANK YOU!
Excellent vid. I dropped the exact same lens which resulted in the same damage. I considered buying a new replacement but then thought about repairing my own. This vid has encouraged me to give it a go - Many thanks.
Awesome! Followed your steps and managed to replace the mount ring on my lens!! Thanks a lot man!
Excellent Video. Explain/shows each step in details. THANK YOU. It worked with 100% perfection.
Thank you, I managed to change my Nikon bayonet by following your steps.
You saved me lolI took my lens to Mike's camera to see if they could fix it for me and they told me no that it was useless now. Said I might as well just throw it away. I couldn't do it. My lens has been broken for so long. Thank you sooooo much :)
I was able to replace the mount using this video! Thanks a lot!
Thank you!!! Thanks to your video I managed to replace it and have my lens working back!!! Great video!!
Many thanks. Just fixed my lens for a second time using your video!
Very useful. I had a problem in that on my lens, as I tried to remove the aperture stop down rod/ring (as you do at 3:50 on the video) I could't take it out; it was still retained deeper in the lens, so I had to remove the two screws that attached the rod to the ring. The screws had thread-lock applied, so I had to reapply it to make sure they stayed and didn't become loose. Fiddly to reassemble, but all good in the end. Thanks for that.
best explained without a word good work
Thank you, now have my favorite camera back! For those of us with bad eyes, a magnifier is a must. The screw for the spring loaded clip was the hardest for me. I ended up breaking the little wire too and had to solder it back on. Also, all kinds of shims will fall out if you turn it upside down to get dropped screws out! They have to go back in a certain way. One thing that made it easier for me was to turn the lens so that the glass portion drops a bit. Didn't have any issues with that tricky part with all the contacts. Took me about two hours I guess, but mostly because of just having bad eyes. It was a great learning experience, would do it again! Made sure to clean the inner lens followed with a good blast of compressed air to get any bits of the old ring out.

russel, is there a way to replace it without soldering? I removed it too =//
Totally saved me from dorking around with shipping this back and forth to Nikon. Of course, if I'd taken pictures as I was taking it apart a couple weeks ago... Awesome video though. Maybe have We Are The Champions in the background!
Life saver . Thanks a lot buddy. I was able to fix mine. Although I snapped the thin wire accidentally and had to solder it. Was a pain in the ass but all is well in the end
Fantastic video! Got it done in 40 mins or so. Thank you
Excellent video, followed your steps and was able to fix my 18-55

Great video, saved me a lens- thank you very much!!
Superbly demonstrated! Copied your recipe and fixed my lense :-)) You are a gift to humanity ;-) Tip: I found it even easier with magnetic Philips screwdrivers.

finally someone who knows which screwdriver to use on a philips screw. Never use a flat screwdriver on a star head screw.

Thanks for the video, showed what i needed. Incredibly good pointer Toby Haynes, work in a clean space. I dropped the screw that holds the brass bracket on with the spring loaded wire / ball point / contact point thingy and thought the screw fell further into the lens. I got way more intimate with the lens than I wanted to but saved me money on a new lens!
Great video! Bought the mount on Amazon. Rubbed the screw drivers on a magnet to make them magnetic, worked great! Thanks!!
Your old bayonet ring looked JUST like mine! Nikon engineers have work to do.

actually its supposed to be like that. if you e.g. drop your camera with a steel bayonet that doesn't break the shock would transfer to somewhere inside the camera and do even bigger damage

They should make it out of metal, like Canon does.

When you slip and smash your lens on the floor/wall/person next to you, do you want it to a) snap at the mount point making it impossible to use the lens or b) damage the f-mount so that you can't get any lens to sit tightly on your camera body. The Nikon engineers have chosen (a).
Excellent video. Helped me fixed my lens. Thanks.
Fantastic instructional video! Lens repaired.
Thanks!!!!!!!! Easy to follow! The best out there!
Great video. Watched it through and then followed it when doing the repair. My comments echo an earlier poster. Should use a Phillips head screwdriver. The wire is attached to the pin with the black ring. If it becomes separated, remove the ring, put the end of the wire in the ring and feed it back onto the pin. Reassembly of the two inner pieces is easier if done together. Thank you for your post
Thanks. This was very helpful. I would not have tacked the job without it. Its really quite fiddly. Now have a working lens again. THANKYOU
Thank you!!! You saved me!!! I broke the Little cable but it work perfectly even without it...
Yes...I fixed my Nikon lens. Thanks a lot!

Great video!! I replace mine watching it. The only thing, you could advice to be carefull with screws, because they are no all same size. Regards from Argentina!
Great video you just save me a lot of money!!!
Excellent video!!!
Hee Luuc, bedankt voor je super filmpje! Het is me door jou gelukt mijn lens te repareren. Je moet het objectief vanaf begin in 18mm positie zetten, heb ik ervaren.
Very helpfully, thank you.
Thank you! It is a great helper.
Many thanks, very usefull video.
Thanks! Works great again.
Thank you very mutch for your help, from Barcelona yours sincerely Lluis
Excelent. Broke ground cable. Time to solder back on. Is there a specific order to the rings? Bumped off and assembled back on aliagnment, but there are 2 gold and 2 silver. Attaching the spring took almost an hour.
Thank you for your video, I did it!
Thanks a lot! works great!
Thanks. Extra precaution needed due to the small wire. Mine broke while double checking the spring course. I managed to weld it back and it seems to work fine now.

Same here, still works though. Just need to find out how dangerous it is to use without as I'm pretty sure that's the grounding cable. Should be fine, but I'm no electrician
Thx bro . Good work
Thank you. I just got myself a free used lens thanks to this since the previous owner wanted to throw it away.
great,, that was very useful for me ,, thanks
This is a great video. I've gone through it, but think I did something wrong... when I telescope the lens in (i.e. reduce zoom), there's a bit of friction/clicking. Any ideas before I take it apart again?
good work, thx
i thought i lost my camera for good once this oart broke on my nikon d80, but this video really helped me
Hello Luuc congratulations for the video, I wanted to ask you, that delicate thread to attach to the bayonetta, what is it for? thank you very much
Muchas gracias!
Obrigado montei minha lente com ajuda do seu vídeo fico ótima muito obrigado
Thank you! You save me!!!
Good job nikon with it mounts. I accidentaly drop my camera. If it was made from a metal mount, my lens will be teared apart. God bless only the plastic mount is broken. By the way, what is that little cable do? I snapped it and worried.
great tutorial, pitty I managed to break the cable at 6:40 - it's very fiddly (in fact my new bayonet had a smaller hole for my original screw, which I found out after cable snapped), but it seems lens is working without it, not sure what that thing is for ...
Well done.
Thanks for saving me $110...Awesome!
Hola!! Tengo este mismo objetivo pero se traba, osea que no gira ni enfoca, como podria reparar eso?
Great video thanks! where can I buy this spare part ?
does it fit to 70-300mm nikon lens
Thank You!! ..I already dit it! :).. working perfectly! ...ufff.. Im lucky! good movie :)
Спасибо, очень понятное видео.
Thank you!
I’d suggest using a magnetic head on an telescoping rod, as used by mechanics. They make small ones that fit in a shirt pocket, with very strong magnets. Much easier than tweezers for removing tiny screws.
After removing the bayonet mount, how hard is it to also replace the rear glass group?
Muito obrigado!!!!
What size screwdriver should I use?
Thank you bro
Where can you buy the new mount? Thanks great video!
Thankyou brooh❤❤❤
Great video , can you please help me , what screw driver shall I use as really tiny screw can't undo please help thanks kindly adam

I agree great video. I found that the screws were torqued so tight that I wound up stripping them and could not get them off. Had to buy a new lens for under $200
Thank you
Does anybody know the name of the first ring that was removed between 0:53 - 1:03 ? I was about to replace my broken bayonet mount and discovered this ring is broken as well but I cannot find the name to order a replacement. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
