    Glued to my D800. Underrated, I’ve used for travel, weddings, long exposure night photos and I’m really impressed with it. On my Z6 I’ve shot 1/2 sec handheld shots with it no problem.

    Dude, back whenI was Nikon shooter I used 24-120 f/4 lens so much. Very sharp, and between 100-120mm close up you can actually get nice bokeh for a portrait. Wasn’t my first choice for portraits, but for an all around lens it was excellent.

    My thought is that it can be caused by the bad reputation of the older 24-120 f/3.5-5.6 VR. Back then when the EF 24-105 f/4 IS was the go to kit lens for many Canon DSLR buyers, Nikonians could not find one that was good enough for them. Hence, the Nikon 24-120 (old or new) is not on the top of their wish lists. On the other hand, the 24-120 f/4 can be a good choice for new Nikonians who are not influenced by its history. That is my experience since 2008, after I picked up the D3. Also, even I have the EF 24-105 f/4 IS (for my 5D series) as well, but rarely use it, but instead the lens trinity.

    If you're a great photographer, this is a great lens. Some good photographers compensate skill for buying the fastest f/1.4 or f/1.2 lenses and that can help, I always recommend upgrading your lenses or just glass over camera. I've had the 24-70 f/2.8G and more recently the 24-70mm f/2.8EVR and I love both, but I ended up selling both. I literally sold the 24-70mm f/2.8E VR because it wouldn't fit in my bag, I know weird or stupid, but important to me. I'm a photojournalist shooting mostly sports and breaking news. I shoot with two Nikon D5's or a D5/D850 depending on what I need or won't based on lighting or conditions, etc. My main two most used lenses that are always in my bag are the 70-200mm f/2.8E VR FL and 500mm f/4E VR FL, with a TC-14E III for when I need or want more reach. So I have only enough room for one more lens in my ThinkTank Airport Accelerator backpack. The 24-70mm f/2.8E VR was an awesome lens and I wish I could have kept it, since I got a very sharp copy and was very impressed. But unfortunately I had to either take only my 70-200FL and the 24-70 VR and leave my 500FL at home or just take the 500mm and one of the zooms, leaving a huge gap in focal length! So I sold off my 24-70 VR, there was no way I was going to sell one of the telephoto lenses as I use and love those much. So I decided to buy one of these 24-120mm f/4 VR lenses and I was honestly surprised by it. I never thought I'd own one or would want one, but f/4 when paired with VR is fine and honestly I really like this lens, but more importantly it fits in my bag. So now I have 24mm-700mm covered, all in one bag, with two flagship sized bodies. This lens in the right hands can produce amazing images, period. It's affordable and it's colors are surprising good, just as good as the pro-grade f/2.8 lenses in my opinion. I won't use my copy much past 70mm, just because I have the epic 70-200mm f/2.8E FL lens, but I do love it at the wide to normal range!

    Great video. I used to have this lens but got the Sigma 24-105 f4 and I personally found it to be sharper although it is a heavy beast! My usual walk around lens is the Nikon 24-85 lens, probably one of the sharpest mid range zooms out there although it has a variable aperture.

    nice review. would love to see how this lens does on a z6. feels like a better option than the 24 - 70 f/4. I have a 24 - 70 f/2.8, but strongly considering selling it. originally i saw it as the most flexible of all lenses, but the more i use it, the more i see it as the compromise of all lenses. the IQ is not as good as prime. In low light, i am probably switching to a prime anyway. The f2.8 might offer better depth of field than an f/4, but 120 f/4 will give the same bokeh as 70 f/2.3, and a more flattering perspective for portraits. Unless you are shooting events/portraits, I'm seeing this as a better option than 24 70 f2.8

    I shoot with a Nikon D750 and have done for a few years. I have a few prime lenses, such as the 24m f/2.8D, which I have been using for landscapes, the 85mm f/1.8D which I normally use for portraits, and the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 which I use for Macro. I recently bought a used 24-120mm f/4 G VR ED lens (for around £240) and I am blown away by its quality. I haven't had much opportunity to use it much, but, so far, I think it is one of the best value for money lenses that I have ever purchased, particularly when paired to my D750.

  • @daxshell242

    @daxshell242

    3 жыл бұрын

    DPreviews are idiots. Look, ES is a gimmick. electronic stabilization is basically cropping the video to help make the footage appear to be steady. In body, you are limited in processing power. you can get some weird wavy issues in some situations, im fairly sure your resolution/frame rate gets restricted. And it definitely will crop the image. as far as im concerned, dont bother. instead, just shoot your footage, and use post production stabilization. your computer has way more resources available, it can also do some level of yaw and pitch correction, and you can do that at full resolution, full fps.

    Agreed 500 is a good price for this lens. But the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 is pretty much the same size and price (if bought separate) and a much better lens with crazy good stabilization (great for video) you should rent it to see what you think.

    The Tamron is faster with 2.8 ...yet the Nikon has more reach with 120mm (including the 85mm and 105mm focal lengths which are favorable by many portraits photographers)... I don't have either but weighing my options to choose one) this lens can be found for about 500$ dollars new (unused pre-owned ) while the tamron would cost 800-900$ for the same condition... beside I expect the Nikon will adapt better with a Z camera if I decided to move to mirrorless... Tamron 24-70 2.8 g2 would be a good choice yet I'm leaning to the Nikon

    @@estoylisto You should be able to find a 24-85mm VR lens for $200-250 and that is a great portable lens that you can keep even if you upgrade since it's nice for travel, being so small and light. Would be my suggestion for a cheap but great "normal" (aka 24-70+) zoom lens.

    yes... and no. they made it super confusing. This lens first appeared as a 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D. Then again as a Nikon 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 VR. This was an absolute garbage lens and should be avoided at all costs. this is the 24-120mm f/4 VR. Its technically their 3rd lens with this focal lens, but technically a MK1 since its the first with this aperature... but they use a VR II module for image stabilization in this lens, but write VR on the lens. Cause why would you want to promote your best features (stares at the graveyard which is Nikon's marketing department)

    Good kit & combination. Today I would prefer a second hand z7 + 24-120 z mount (Sharper , less heavy, 45 Mpix (and lens becoming a 30-180mm in DX format keeping the definition of the d780) for not a lot more : z7 2nd hand 1500 euros + z 24-120 = 1250 / total = 2750 euros vs the kit 2600 euros… For thé z7 you need to add one expensive xdf and a card reader ( tot = 150€) so 10% more than your kit but it s another World… and it just the price of the A7iv WITHOUT any lens… For me it s the best plan for 2022. Note that There are now a lot of z7 on second market due to z7ii… but with the last firmware 3.4 on z7 the upgrade to the z7ii is not mandatory at all.

    Quick question I’m new to photography but if the lens says f/4-5.6G ED VR does that mean the lowest aperture I can go is 4 and the highest is 5.6 ? And what does G and ED mean

  • @charlielemley8319

    @charlielemley8319

    4 жыл бұрын

    No, it means the widest aperture gives you f/4 at the low end of the zoom range and f/5.6 at the high end. “G” is Nikon’s designation for relatively newer lenses that don’t have aperture control rings on the lens - aperture is controlled electronically through the camera (which is generally good as long as you’re using it on a relatively modern Nikon camera). ED means it has extra-low dispersion glass, which limits problems like chromatic aberration (color fringing around objects in high-contrast areas). So a Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 g ed is a lens with electronic aperture control and extra-low dispersion glass that ranges from 55mm f/4 to 200mm f/5.6 if you leave it at max aperture as you zoom.

    I think camera companies are all doing great at making usable kit lenses these days. Canon's EOS R/RP both come with a 24-105 f4, even their full frame dslrs are coming with one, Nikon has a 24 - 105 f4 and the 24 - 120, Fuji has 18 - 55 f2.8, or the 16 - 80 f4...however, lots of people saying Fuji 18 - 55 2.8-4 is best...sure, it is, on a crop sensor camera. But it is also important to bear in mind that 2.8 on a crop sensor is equivalent to f4 on full frame, in terms of DoF. So you're technically not getting anything more than what you'd get with an f4 lens on FF, except maybe a stop of light at most, which considering that FF handles high ISO better anyway, is negligible. That being said, it is still the best first lens for a Fuji system imo though, great cost to quality ratio.
