I love the 24-120 lens. I own just about all of the Nikon lens for my D750. I use the 24-120 most of the time. The Vibration Reduction feature is fantastic. I could be shaking butt naked in Antarctica using this lens, and the focus would be perfect. Can't say enough good things about this lens. The 24-120 is the king of kit lenses. Great video by-the-way.

Hello there,. glad you enjoyed the review. Yes the 24-120mm is a monster kit lens. I have mine and use it from time to time, again if I need a one lens DSLR solution to cover 24-120mm ,, then this is the lens I will take with me. Antarctica ayyy? nice,,, must be a fun time up there.

Good lens and good range being an f4 and vr working well. Was thinking should I even mention the 28-300 in this review, I did not only because that lens, yes it has alot more range but its on a lower quality level then the 24-120. I can use this lens for paid photography gigs with consistent pro results. I cant say the same for the 28-300. That lens is more of a consumer lens. Thanks for your input and exp Lance.

I just received this lens with my Nikon D750 I just bought used. I have no issues with it. People (professionals) bad mouth it because it is a kit lens and not made in Japan. I have had no issues taking photos with mine. I am not a pro, But I'm not a beginner either. Just my opinion as a semi pro who does his research before making a purchase. Remember, most of these "pros" that do reviews on gear are usually being paid sponsorship fees to make those videos. They aren't gonna bash the product or they lose income.

Thank you! Your format for reviewing a lens is the best and most helpful I've seen -- no charts, but real world examples and even comparisons with similar lenses. It was great to see a modern day review of a lens that has been out for a decade and, as you said, is often overlooked. I got my 24-120 as a kit with my D750 and saved some money. I now have a D780 and the 24-120 is actually the reason I haven't gotten the 24-70. It just works and has that extra reach. Appreciate the comparison with the 24-70. Your comments always have little interesting "nuggets", like when you said that 2.8 wasn't a big deal at the reception. I'm keeping my 24-120 and appreciate the balanced evaluation from a real pro. Well done. 👍

I don't own this lens but I'm seriously considering it for exactly the purpose you cite: Compact with good reach if needed and sometimes you don't want to risk your best lenses going to the zoo. Good job, really, very good! I see a d850 in my future and a nikon D6 for sure, Im just waiting for the price to dip a little in the used market. I prefer the D4 and D800 for workhorses for now. would love to get me the D6 and d850 soon. I own a few Z6's and will getting a z7ii soon. Im going to wait and see what the Z9 has to offer. btw the 24-120 isnt as compact as you might think however for comparison, look at the 24-70 and 24-120 side by side toward the tail end of this video. for the used money of this lens yo cant go wrong. btw thank you and Im happy you are enjoying my videos.

I just watched your review of the Nikon 24-120 mkm f4 VR. I agree with you that it is a very useful walk-around lens. As a matter of fact I have two of them mounted on my D4s and my D810. When I'm on city transport (Bus) I have either one in a Lowepro camera bag with either the Nikon 70-200 mm, f/2.8 G ED VR in the bag for the D810 with an SB-700 speedlight in the bag. The D4s has a AF Nikkor 80-200 mm, f/2.8, D ED, with a SB-400 in its bag. I've appreciated having those lenses at various times and look forward to acquiring another Lowepro bag to prepare it for the D750. Thanks for your review and your suggestions.

Bro you helped me!!! Fantastic Video!!!! I have a 16-35 f4, 24-70 2.8 and 24-120 f4 for my d850 and I have an outside wedding to shoot, 5-6pm. I really didn't want to be swapping back and forth and was wanting someone to say the 24-120 is good enough for professional work. The 24-70 forces me to walk too close to the bride and groom and I feel like a disruption that's why my plan is to use the 16-35 before any guests arrive to get establishing shots then go to the 24-120 because of the range. If it were indoors I think I'd use the 24-70 as primary. I don't have a 70-200 2.8 but I want one, even though more choices is going to cause more confusion, lol.

I think your review is a good one. After I upgraded from a D7100 to a D750 I got the 24-70/2.8 G as well. But pretty soon I found out that it's just too heavy for what it is, for me. Then I got the 24-120/4 G as well. There are some things I don't like about it. I don't like the zoom creep. Also, the AF is slower compared to that 24-70. But the results speak for themselves. So it's not perfect, but I like it a lot. I also considered the 24-85/3.5-4.5 G. In terms of range I could have lived with that (I had the 17-55/2.8 G on the D7100 - AWESOME build quality & AF). But when I tried it in a shop, it seemed to be visibly less sharp, and I read it has pretty severe field curvature. I didn't like that on my 17-55 so I chose this one instead.

So im not the only one . hehe, I thought my lens was defective. VR is good on the 24-120. Very impressed with the results. I purchased a rarely used Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR second hand for about $350 a few years ago, but it never got much use due to the corners/edges of the photos coming out blurry. I ended up buying a bad copy of this lens =( It stayed in my gear bin for a couple years until I contemplated selling it and buying a brand new 24-70mm f/2.8 for $1500. Instead, I sent it to Nikon to have the problem checked out and repair the corner blur. When it came back, I immediately attached the lens on my D750 and shot landscape as well as portrait photos. Sure enough, the blurry corners disappeared and the photos were sharp! After spending a few hundred dollars for Nikon to repair the lens, I've decided to keep it and put it to good use. To me, it's an amazing lens despite some of the negative reviews I've read. Good thing I sent the lens out for repair otherwise I would've had to shell out $1500 on a 24-70mm.

Hi Vahagn - This lens is a strange case as it is truly an 'all arounder' that as a result compromises in every way: It has average IQ, it is not fast (f/4) and its VR is good but not great. It does have a compelling range however at 24-120 vs typical 24-70 making it interesting walk around lens if you can only take one. Years ago when I bought my D750, I opted to not buy this lens for the kit discount price and instead bought the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 lens. Years later, I purchased the Nikon 24-120 f/4 lens refurbished from Nikon for about $550. The Tamron lens is about $1,200 new and the Nikon 24-120 new is about $1,100. The Tamron smokes this lens in every way - it has much better IQ, its VR (which Tamron calls VC) is about 2 stops better and of course it is a 2.8 across the focal range rather than a 4 so it is a stop faster allowing for lower ISO in low light scenarios - they only way that the Nikon is better is in the extra reach from 70 to 120. When I bought the Nikon lens, I thought that I would use it more, but for the work I do, I really don't. It just isn't fast enough and the IQ isn't close enough to the Tamron or the primes that I use. I upgraded to the Z system a year and half ago, and the new 24-70 2.8 S is probably the best 24-70 ever made for any camera system, and the 24-120 is further left behind (of course the new lens is $2500 so there is a vast price difference). That said, as a purely walking around lens, or a vacation lens, I think that it is a good value proposition if you get it in a kit with your camera for about $500 or used for no more than about $500. It is worth $500 - it is definitely no worth $1,100. If you are into video as mentioned in your video, this lens is definitely not for you. The same can be said in general for most F mount lenses - they are loud to auto focus and most have considerable focus breathing. You mention the 24-200 lens for Z mount as an alternative, but that lens is a 4-6.3 variable aperture lens and most reviews confirm that it is one of the weaker lenses in the Z line up for IQ - as a travel lens it is probably sufficient, but for any real work or low light it is lacking. A better alternative if you absolutely need more range than 24-70 would likely be the upcoming 24-105 f/2.8-4 S lens for the Z system. As this lens is designed for the mirrorless platform and is an S line lens, its IQ will likely far exceed the 24-200 and certainly the F mount 24-120. Furthermore, as an S line lens, it will likely have very little focus breathing making it a much more competent video lens and although it is still a variable aperture, it is a 2.8-4 so it is faster across at least half of the focal lengths than the 24-120 and just as fast at the telephoto side. This is the lens that is the best replacement for a 24-120 not the 24-200. The 24-120 was meant to be a pro lens and so is the upcoming 24-105. The 24-200 is a travel/'tourist' lens. Final thoughts: As a backup lens the 24-120 can serve in a pinch, but I never reach for it in favor of the 24-70 2.8 and/or the entire line of new 1.8 primes for the Z mount - all of these lenses are just better in almost all respects save the focal range versatility - but again the upcoming 24-105 will almost match the focal length versatility of the 24-120 lens and offer superior IQ and also be faster. If you are looking for a lens like this, I think it would be smart to wait for this new lens to drop this year - unless you can pick up the 24-120 for a smoking deal - south of $500. Just my take. -B

An an amazing TAKE it is Baron!! Wow thank you for this useful very informative comment. You nailed it right on the head with a sledge hammer. Ok so one question I have for you, ohh yah and btw I to Im looking forward to the 24-105 but some are saying its not going to be a 2.8-4 , just an f4, but we will see, But my question is,, as far as your tamron goes. how does that tamron compare with the Niko 24-70 2.8 G in your opinion?

  • @baronsilverton6504

    @baronsilverton6504

    3 жыл бұрын

@@Vahagraphy Hi Vahagn - I am also not sure about the upcoming 24-105 - if it is only an F4 then I probably would not get it (depending on one's use case) but if it is a 2.8-4 then it is much more appealing and I think would be a very good replacement for the current F mount 24-120 F/4 - we know it will be sharper in the center and certainly corner to corner, but if it is also faster through at least half the zoom range then it becomes very appealing. With respect to your question: as far as how the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 compares to the Nikon 24-70 2.8 - that is a complicated question. First there are several versions of the Nikon - lets only discuss the VR version as the Tamron has VR (called VC for vibration control in Tamron parlance) - this way it is more of an apples to apples comparison: In this case, both lenses are quite sharp, both suffer for some amount of focus breathing, but the VR on the Tamron is significantly better than the VR on the Nikon - Fstoppers did a video a couple years ago comparing the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 to the Sigma Art 24-70 2.8 to the current Nikkor 24-70 2.8 with VR - their conclusion was that the Tamron was the best - as I recall it was because the IQ was similar in all of them although the Tamron had a potential claim to being the best, but the VR (VC) on the Tamron smoked the Sigma Art lens whose VR (called OS - for Optical Stabilization) is pretty bad and the Tamron was significantly better than the Nikon although the Nikon was better than the Sigma. Finally there is price - the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 is $1199.00 whereas the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E ED-IF AF-S VR is listing for $2,399.95 but on sale now for $2096.95. I am sure it is readily available for the $2,096.95 price but still at that price the Tamron is clearly the better lens. It is $900 less expensive has more or less equal IQ, and better VR. I recently sold my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 because I also sold my Nikon D750 which was my last DSLR. I now use the Z system exclusively, and I have the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 S lens for the Z system. This lens is incredible and is better than all of the aforementioned lenses - it is likely the best 24-70 2.8 on the market for any manufacturer - certainly right at the top - so I no longer needed my Tamron. That said, for someone on a budget just starting out who wants a professional lens the Tamron is a way better buy than the Nikon - I would even say for professionals if you don't already have the Nikon, save the money and get the Tamron - I have used it for professional work and it is outstanding. Furthermore, if you are going to use it for video its VR (VC) is clearly class leading - above the rest. Hope this answers your question Vahagn. Thanks again :) -B

@@Vahagraphy Hi Vahagn - if you are sticking with DSLR and you do not already have the 24-70 2.8 Nikkor with VR then yes, I think the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 is the best choice - it is optically on par with any of the F mount choices and has the best VR (VC - Tamron lingo) for a great price - much less than the Nikon. That said, if you are going to become a Z shooter, there is no substitute for the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 S lens for Z mount. It is possibly the best 24-70 2.8 made for any camera system to date. If you are migrating to the Z system, I would say sell whatever current 24-70 2.8 that you have and buy the S line model for Z - you absolutely cannot go wrong. It is what I did with my Tamron (which I loved) and I do not regret the decision. Hope this helps. -B

Good Video, you named all the aspects, I fully agree, I think it was necessary to give an objective look at this lense, because some are still prejudis and only see the f stop. The slidely difference in the sharpness comes from the different construction principle . While the 24-70 has internal focusing, the 24-120 is the oposite. With the internal focus, the lenses are shiftet inside against each other, this way the point of sharpness can be reached more precisely, but it's also more expensive. I could say a lot about this lens but my reasons to have it are: 24-70 2 8 lenses are much heavier more expensive and have much less reach. I only take it off my D810 to use either Micro or the extra wide 16-35. You could have sharper shots in some situations with the heavier, shorter reach "Pro" lenses but how many real life oppirtunies are you going to miss? I would love an update for this as more megapixels are added to camera sensors. Another one to watch is the 70-300 P vr for FX: sharp on D810 even at 300mm.

I can't speak to the VR model, but I've had nothing but bad luck with the 24-120 3.5-5.6D. I've purchased 4 of them, and none of them were what I could call good. 1st one the zoom would bind up between 85-105 : returned. The second actually came in two pieces (the zoom ring was not attached) : returned. The third one was again stiff in the zoom, but usable. But the corners were very soft (downright blurry) : gave it to my brother. The fourth one works ok, pics are passable but not great, and at the 24mm setting - it reports 38mm in exif data. I like the zoom range, it's great - but I just couldn't find a good one. Admit that I bought used - but 0 for 4 was just too much for me. Seems you're happy with the VR version, but not sure I'll look for that after my experiences with the D version. (sorry)

Hello Charles. The 24-120 F4 is a totally different lens. I'm assuming this lens is the refresh version of the lens you had no luck with. btw , I know a few owners of your D lens that had similar exp with it. the 24-120 F4 G lens is a good all around zoom. ITs F4 all around. Yes I will admit, not as good as the 24-70 f2.8 but thats to be expected. This lens has a history of Zoom creep which is the only negative. but other than that its a good lens.

The 24-120 F/4 is a much better lens than Nikon's 28-300mm. I read reviews about how good the 28-300 lens is so I purchased one for travel but I was very disappointed. On my D850 and D780 the VR was unreliable and the sharpness was inconsistent. I purchased the 24-120 used for travel and I am much happier with it! Maybe I had a bad copy of the 28-300, who knows?. If I need even more reach I can also pack Nikon's 70-300 af-p lens for travel. I shoot stills only.

Hello Stan. Thank you for sharing your exp with the 24-120. I've also used the 28-300 nd my time with that lens was just ok. Cant really use it for paid wedding work because of the aperture range. When shooting professionally I want to be able to set my aperture at what I desire, constant f/4 is why I choose the 24-120 over this. Yes you get allot more reach however over the detriment of everything else.I purposely left the 28-300 out of the review because I feel that lens is more for consumers than pros. What do you think? Your actually owned that lens. Is my take correct on the 28-300? more of a beginner, consumer kit lens than a pro?

@@Vahagraphy The 28-300 is an older lens and I believe that there was a lot of sample variations in quality. I probably would have had to have purchased several lenses to get a good copy. I was so disgusted with this lens after the inconsistent VR that I traded in in for a used 24-120 which is a significant improvement in both image quality and VR. If I want more reach I will add Tamron's excellent new 100-400 4-6.3 lens. This is for travel and nature only. When live dance performances begin again I will use my Z6 with faster lenses and it has a much quieter shutter than the DSLRs do.

WTF on the Z6 this lens always nails focus and it is hilariously sharp even on f4 ... my only gripe, it is so bad balanced on the ftz.
