Amazing video! I have a d3100 and the 18-55, last week I bought a 35mm prime and OMG!!!!! I mean, the aperture of f 1.8 is amazing, but I feel that also at f 5 (which is the max aperture you get with the 18-55 at 35mm) the photos with the 35mm are much better than at 35mm and f 5 with the kit lens! As you can tell by what I wrote, I'm an amateur, but still I can really apreciate the major jump in quality with this lens, absolutely stunning for my usage.

I was surprised too- I think this points to the fact that the 18-105 is a good lens and in this price range it is hard to get much sharper?

I just upgraded from the 18-70 I got as a kit with my D70 to the 18-140VR for use on my D90. I knew it would be a lot sharper than my 6MP era lens but you are right about an improvement in coatings. I was totally surprised by the better color that I saw.

Great practical review. Great common sense comparisons. Great imagery for comparisons. Now I remember back in the day why I had all PRIMARY lenses from 20mm 2.8 on up to 300 2.8 and no zooms. SHARPNESS. But I bet the zooms are fine with the 4k video.

Hi Toby! I am about to take a trip of 6 months and I am focusing in traveling light (only 1 lens), I have a Nikon D5000 with 18-55 kit and I was thinking on getting a lens with wider zoom range. I am struggling between: Nikon 18-105 AF-S, Nikon 18-140 AF-S, Nikon 18-200 AF-S, Sigma 18-200 HSM and Sigma 18-250 HSM. I was looking thru your videos and found some Sigma lens reviews as well, but not those models, It would be great to have your insight. Thank you very much! DR

Hi. Thanks so much for this review. I have a D3100 and I'm very torn b/t which one of these lenses to purchase. I tried the 18-105 on my camera and it was great. I have not tried the 18-140. I'm looking for high quality photos that look professional without spending a great deal of money. I'll mainly be shooting portraits, some groups (close and far) and would love to take this traveling when I go on vacation. I'm definitely an amatuer, but I want high quality photos. Out of the 2, which overall do you think would be a good fit for me? I really appreciate it!

I was looking for a great walkaround travel lens for my D5300 and came across this video review. Wonderfully done. I want to ask a question however. I have 3 lenses in my radar, this one nikkor 18-140 being the first one. the other two are the tamron 18-200 vc and the sigma 18-250 lens . both of them quite gives me a better zoom range than this one. the tamron is cheaper and the sigma is about the same price... Image quality is a huge thing for me however and have learned that the tamron has issues with chromatic abberation and softness and the sigma has issues with sharpness... SO considering just the image sharpness and chromatic abberations , how does this one fare over the tamron and the sigma ?If this is way better then i might want to give up chasing longer zoom ranges and settle for this. Please help if you have the information and have tested the others yourself or you know of someone who uses those lenses... feel free to comment everyone else who might be watching my comment.

Hello sir, do you know if the 18-55mm VR II performs any better than it's previous version? Would you still recommend the 18-140mm over it? The d5300 with the 18-140mm is too expensive here in Brazil. For the same price I can get the body + 18-55 VR II + a prime lens (35 or 50) for portraits. What would you pick?

So now I'm thinking for a few days if the 18-105 was the right decision or not. So would buying the 18-140 be an upgrade so far? Or just saving money for a 16-80 or something different?

I had a D5200 stolen recently and i wasnt sure if i would replace it or just go with the D5300. I noticed theres a difference in the processor being an expeed 3 over the expeed 4 in the D5300. Is there much of a difference?

Most of the time I make interior still-life photos (food, toys, objects, etc) but I hope I could use the same lens when travel or making videos. Hey! great job with the video, i have seen this video a couple of times now. i need a little bit of advice. I own a nikon d5100 which came with a 18-55 , soon after i coupled it with a 35mm 1.8, spent a couple of years with that and it was working out great, but now my 18-55 is broken because of the inverse lens macro i did for quite a long time. i am planning to buy a zoom. tamron has released a newer verson of the 18-200 and it has great VC but suffers from some problems due to the wide range. Confused between that and the NIkon 18-105, the price for both is almost similar.. please suggest .. thanks :)

I think in the first example (18mm) the point of focus of the picture taken with the 18-105 (on the right) is wrong: is set to the background. That's why the 18-140 looks sharper!

I wonder if there is a QC issue. I have the 18-70 which is not bad at all. I have heard bad things though. I just picked a used 18-105 & it is even a hair better. Yet many vids I see talk about it being not so good either. I am pleased w/ my kit lenses. Maybe a difference from lens to lens?

Hi, I am from India. I was searching for a good DSLR and after a long search, I've finalized the Nikon D7200. Now the question in front of me is whether I should go with the 18-140 kit lens or buy the D7200 body with a sigma 17-50 f2.8. (the total price difference is just $ 135 equivalent Indian Rupees). My purpose would be mostly landscapes, some family photos, and astrophotography if possible. I hope I am not over expecting. Please help me in choosing a lens keeping in mind that Nikkor 16-80 f2.8-4 is out of my reach and in near future I wish to buy Tokina AT-X M100 AF PRO D for macro photography.

I do think picking up a versatile lens like the nikon 18-140 and a prime lens like the 35mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.8 is a great way to go. best of both worlds with the convenience of an all around lens and the bokeh from a prime - plus low light capabilities. Great video and very informative but you should have done all the shot samples on tripod at iso 100 with vr disabled because at high iso all the photos are grainy and if you want to look at all the small details you will get a loss in sharpness caused by noise and it will be there not because of the lens but because of the high iso.

Overall I think the 70D is a better camera but the D7100 is also very good. depends on what is important to you. I don't know about the a77 predecesor so I won't offer any advice there.

I have gone back & forth with nikon cameras & lenses - up graded alot...what I've found is using the d5200 with the 18-140 is not near as great as the sigma 18-250. the only down fall is the sigma is fuzzy as you zoom out. I'm upgrading to the d5300 - question does the d5300 work better with the 18-140 and should they get the impressive pix you mention or should I just go back to the sigma 18-250? I have tried the d7100 the sensor seems much faster and better. but its much heavier and the cost is definitely more. Toby if you had the choice of d5200, d5300 or d7100 to move quick and take various pictures of different events inside, outside, active, non active almost every day, for the papers...which would you choose?

Debby I found this worked for me.. I had to find a camera bag that allowed me to change my lens swiftly and safely. I practiced a bit using the bag.. I now use the tokina 11- 16 a Nikon G35 prime and the Nikon G50m the time it takes to swap them over is a minute, it is composition that makes the picture work. But the quality of images are so much better. If you add the nikon G105mm macro to the group to you would have really top images..I use the D5300 I love it would not swap it for D5200 or the D7100 . I hope you don't mind me sharing this thought

TheSinisterWasHere Honestly they are so very similar. The 18-140 is a little better but also consider getting a prime for indoor shoots kzread.info/dash/bejne/oIN4t7l8mNrMfbg.html and I would get the 35mm f/1.8

+Dirlene Lopez Both of the lenses showed in this video will work perfectly fine with your D5000. If you're serious about your photography you might want to think about upgrading but remember, buying good glass is pretty much always better than upgrading to a better body. ;)

Toby, I don't know if somebody already told you this before but: did you notice that in the minute 14:19 the picture you took with the 18 - 140 mm was shot at 1/50th of a second but the one shot with the 18 - 105mm was shot at 1/60th? I only ask because I didn't see any note explaining it. Love your videos!

Hi Toby! I'm set on getting the D5200 rather than the D5300 (I don't really need the Wifi/GPS feature). Based on your tests, you said the best kit lens with the D5300 would be the 18-140mm, but since the 18-105mm is slightly faster in focusing, would that be better with the D5200 which has a bit of a slower processor? Thanks so much for all your videos. Really appreciate the time you take to make these reviews/recommendations! :)

Who said the 18-105 is faster to focus? Also I am still testing D5200 vs D5300 and finding that the sensor on the D5300 is improved - fairly significantly in some shots at ISO 1600 and above. Just FYI. 18-140 is a good lens but you can save by going with 18-105.
