You must have a bad copy. This is one of the best lenses in its price range available. Plus, how much closer than 14 inches do you want to get with a lens of this type?

I own it to and really see no major problems with it. Of course it's not perfect but I'm still enjoying it and having no problem getting sharp pictures with it with the D7000. I call bullshit on this review.

Had this lens around a year now and its incredible. Still portrait video you name it it can do it! You either have no idea what your doing or a bad copy.

According to Photozone and DxOMark this lens is sharper than both the 18-55vr and more expensive zooms like the Nikon 18-200vr and 18-300vr. Ken Rockwell called it soft on the edges too, but mine has given me great results. It's about the same size as the 18-55 kit lens and the focus ring is much better for shooting video. These dx zooms do have lots of distortion, but like you said Lightroom takes care of that easily. I think this is a great lens for the $ and a great travel lens.

I am looking to buy the 18-140mm Nikkor zoom lens, quite highly rated in its class.

Has either you or Aaron managed to check out m42 lenses? they are older lenses with screw mounts but are really cheap, you can buy a eos or f mount adapter but make sure you get one with glass to allow infinity focus. You can find very high quality lenses that are cheap and are used widely for video. Just ordered a Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.8 m42 for instance

Number 1 problem is low light I kept using ISO 1000 shutter 80 Number 2 Build i broke the lense from a drop cuz of the plastic Very heavy for long photoshoots Plus its getting loose cuz i keep changing to the 50mm nikkor 1.8 I have the same body as you lol Number 3 slow AF for sports Number 1 best thing about the lense and the body it survived after a full submersion in a river climb Plan to buy the 2.8 18-50 sp vc ii by tamron But if your happy i dont mind these were my rough experience with the lense and D90

My sight must be crooked, can't see the imperfections at all, been using the 35mm prime lens, now I am switching back to this one. No complaints at all.

I think this review doesn't do it justice in terms of 'sharpness', if your a good photographer. You will make your own adjustments from your settings and taking the best picture. Sure an 18-200 will be better with a lower f stop but your review didn't address what camera you were using also which can also make your images less sharp.

i found a d90 and this lense in old boxes of my uncle who left the states. i did not know it was this expensive i thought it would be 100$ max. but the lenses bayonet broke so icant really enjoy taking pictues ;C

Either he had a broken version or he is fibbing. I've passed this around to several of my friends using DX bodies and every one of them said it is sharp, has more than reasonable bokeh, reasonable focus speed and is a very good all-round lens!

Get the rokinon 85mm 1.4 if you're comfortable with manual. It's less pricey for $300 or less.

This lens is great the negatives you brought up are to be expected for the price. Yeah i agree its not prime sharp but this lens can do so much. Also great for video

I own a nice camera and disagree with your assessment. I use mine for portraits and landscapes with no issues. I think this is one of Nikon's most underrated lenses. It's range and light weight make it great for taking on vacation. Just my opinion....

Well sorry, I like your videos, but I also disagree on this one, I can agree on some points but to a several degree, I think you over extend the negatives a little too much. I've dumped the 18-55mm lens for this cause It seems sharper, my 18-55 didn't either had VR, which I can really see gives a lot on the 18-105 lens. But well it's not as sharp as my 35mm 1.8 at all, but deffinitly sharper than the 18-55mm.

no im sorry bin it .. do your photography a big boost gat the 18-140 . metal mount and much sharper glass .. iv used at least 5 of these lenses and 4 18-140s theyre is a mile of difference ... thats why theyre cheap .. its not that he has a bad one ..(if thats what your thinking ) its the one off someone has a good one ..try any other lens even the old 18-55s are an upgrade from this lens .. i seriously thought my nikon d7200 was crap untill i changed the lens .. it was like having new glasses on .

I don't know what you're criteria for "sharp" is, but my 18-105 is sufficiently sharp, and if you put a polarizer on it, you cut down on flare. Come on dude! Whatever distortion there is can be taken care of in photo editing. Not as sharp or accurate as my prime lens, but it will do as a great carry around lens.

I have 18-140 and 50 mm lens....Sharpness wise I don't find any big difference.....zoom range is ideal for travel and daily use....50 mm give me better low light photography and Bokeh.....I love my 18-140.....perfect for me

MrAppledude007 I can assure 85mm 1.4G is far sharper than the 2 u mentioned, go anysite with the test result photozone/dxo and u will know. Zoom lens are crappy when it compares to prime, its the nature of zoom. The more glass there is the less sharper, count how many glass elements in the so called big three. They are just sharp comparing to kit lens

MrAppledude007 I can quickly tell u now 24-70 on D800E has a sharpness count of 21pMpix at 35mm f2.8(best point) and a stupid 30um chromatic aberration. 85mm easily kill that at f1.4 with a sharpness count of 30P-mPix. 14-24 is sharp at 14mm, crap at 20-24mm. Conclusion, i dont even think comparing zoom to prime is fair, so dont tell me a zoom len is sharp LMAO

I love the lens. I got my first dslr in 2010 with this kit lens. Now I’m sort of upgrading to a mirrorless and still using back this lens. It’s a midrange lens but also gives pretty great shots.

I have found this lens excellent for either landscapes or portraits. I feel you are using this tool for the wrong job.
