Nigel Thornberry: The Dad Who Risked It All

Ойын-сауық

Recently, I've had a great time of looking back at Nicktoons Dads from history. There were a lot of really top tier dads from Nicktoons that we grew up watching. However, there's one dad that I knew without a doubt couldn't be left out of the conversation. He's a dad who's so dedicated to his family, that he would put his life on the line on multiple occasions. Today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're looking at Nigel Thornberry: The Dad Who Risked It All...
ALSO, wanna see me drag some trash dads next? let me know down in the comments!!!

    The egg salad comment made me smile. He’s so sweet to recognize and celebrate her wins too. It is cool and impressive to boil eggs that high up. I will say that I think Nigel being extra cautious probably also comes from him understanding the environment and situation he’s in. He’s having to keep his kid safe alone. When he’s with the entire family he has some back up eyes and hands on deck in the form of his wife and teenage daughter so he has the wiggle room to cut loose. Alone on a very accident prone area with a child he needs to be at the level that he was. I didn’t see his behavior as overbearing at all even when I watched this as a kid. That’s him being responsible. I can’t even imagine how freaked out he must have been when she went missing.

    I agree. Traversing the Andes is no joke and if it gives Nigel pause instead of raring ahead, you know it's risky. Nigel is also supportive and protective of his family. Knowing the risks, he agreed in order to support Eliza's curiosity. However, Eliza only thought about her adventuring not about the risks, even with explanation over and over again as to why they were doing things a certain way to keep them alive. She was quick to be angry at her father, blaming him for making the trip mundane up/raining on her parade until Santusa corrected her about what happened. Eliza's hubris nearly cost her. And don't get me started on Santusa. Even as a kid I was like "This Llama needs to not enable Eliza's behavior." She kept fanning the flames and encouraging behavior that could cause harm to Eliza. I feel like 75% of her risky behavior could have been squashed if Santusa was on Nigel's side. But I also have to give her some slack, she's a llama and used to the Andes, she lacks depth to understand danger of them because she was bred to traverse them. Poor Nigel.

    I agree as well - I think he was protective in that way because he knows the dangers, and he's much smarter than his demeanor makes it seem. & he wasn't protective to keep his promise to Marianne, but simply because what they were doing was incredibly dangerous and, obviously, he loves Eliza & wanted to keep her safe.

    My dad died when I was eight after a year long battle with leukemia, and some of my feelings always goes back to what could have been: what would my relationship with him would be like as an adult. From stories I could glean, he was similar to Nigel in that he loved the outdoors so much that he wanted to become a park ranger and work with nature. When he was in college, he and some friends actually spent a summer backpacking the entire Appalachian trail. But plans change and after a decade or so in the military, he happily worked as an accountant and part time in Sears' hardware department. When I was born, he was excited until I was old enough to join Cub Scouts because he was an Eagle Scout, and loved it enough that he wanted to share that with me. He participated with every event like the Pinewood Derby (he carved my car using his band saw), every camping trip until his health declined. I made Eagle to honor him. And to demonstrate how good of a scout he was, there was a time when our neighbors were moving out of their house and they had a pair of young twins at hand, Dad was passing by and saw how poorly packed and poorly secured their moving truck was. Dad dropped everything he was doing and had them empty out their truck and restart packing it from the ground up. He ensured everything fitted neatly, economically, and securely using every rope knot he knew (it also helps that my parents had experience moving around a lot when they were deployed at various parts of the world, so they knew how to make the best of their travelling space). And when that wasn't enough, he followed them to their new house to help with moving in.

  • @Brilivingfree
    @Brilivingfree2 ай бұрын

    Another note on the rope, they're on a steep mountain. He didn't tie the rope around her until they were up there. The rope is another safety measure (if she slipped off the edge of the mountain for example, he'd be able to pull her back up).

    I think Nigel understood there is a time and place for discipline and that this was not it. He was more concerned with finding Eliza and making sure she was safe than punishing her; though he probably felt that powerful anger born from fear that loving fathers sometimes lose control over. Plus he also might have figured Eliza learned her lesson but still won't let her come along with him on any adventures like this for some time.

    I can see why Eliza would find what Nigel is doing is overbearing, but everything he did was just the bare minimum of traversing a dangerous mountain path. Regulating breathing, staying away from the ledge, not leaving the path, and keeping attached to your teammates is just basics. It's not like he bundled her up so much she couldn't move, or force her to stay on the llama, or denied her any pit stops even if they were nearby. He's only overbearing from Eliza's perspective, imo. Nigel is a trained outdoorsman, he knows what he's doing, he knows when to be more careful than normal. He's fun loving and up for danger, but not when it's the life or death of his children.

  • @cardboardcadet8112
    @cardboardcadet81122 ай бұрын

    I don't think Nigel was overbearing at all. At least considering their situation. The reason why he tied her to him was due to prep for climbing the mountain. Reason being that visibility during a snowstorm can be extremely low. Where you can't even see in front of your face. You can see when climbers venture up mountains like Mt. Everest, they do the same thing. Not to mention, he brought up the breathing technique as a precaution for if she did wander off on her own to climb. I have a feeling he knew he couldn't stop her, but offered advice to make sure she'd make it out the other side. Bonus points to Nigel too because he didn't yell at Eliza He was just composed and relieved. He was primarily concerned for her safety and didn't want to scare her about how close she was to death.

I have great faith in this wisdom as he at the age of 89 has the stamina and physique of a man in his 50s and constantly goes above and beyond what I'd expect of someone his age, including climbing up to his studio roof and removing a tree that had fallen upon it as well as pushing his car into town when it had broken down, man is an absolute animal.

Anything and everything could have gone horribly wrong while trekking in the mountains. If you asked me, I think Eliza, Nigel, the llama, and the Inca family all got off VERY lucky in the end. If I remember right, during another episode, when Eliza went missing in the Himalayas, Nigel scoured the mountains looking for her, when he found her in a cave, he thought she was being accosted by a _yeti,_ and without hesitation was ready to fight to keep Eliza safe. Nigel was ready to trade blows with a being likely twice his size with likely three times his strength to protect his daughter from harm. Nigel might be the adventurous type, but when it comes to his family, he won't hesitate to be there for them or fight for them. That's way more than some Cartoon dads even think about their families.

    This was a great video. I hope we see more Wild Thorberry videos in the future. Nigel is a Smashing dad. To your last point about Nigel not telling Maryann, I kind of assumed he would confide in her when they were alone (adult to adult) on one of their video outings so she was in the loop without getting Eliza (who is still recovering) in trouble right then and there. And I think knowing her husband and daughter as well as she does, I think Maryann is smart enough to know that Something happened. Just my two cents. Great video and I'm looking forward to more :).

    I mean in Santusa’s defense, she’s a llama: a species that, while not as aggressive as say donkeys, are still solitary by nature and thus more prone to being independent, headstrong and outspoken. Fun fact: the donkey’s solitary nature is also where its notorious stubbornness comes from as they have a higher sense of self preservation than horses. Getting back to Nigel however he, Ray and Hugh create an interesting Ven diagram with Hugh as the mentor, Nigel as the protector and Ray as the disciplinarian. Hugh doesn’t tend to oversee disciplining Jimmy himself both because Judy is the sterner one of the two and because both trust Jimmy to be smart enough to understand why things are how they are. And while they do worry about Jimmy’s safety, they also know from personal experience that he is more than capable of not only protecting himself but saving them if the gloves come off. Additionally Jimmy’s intelligence comes with overconfidence thus he needed a mentor in conventional wisdom Nigel and Marianne are both safety minded because of their occupation as naturalists though Marianne is, like Judy, the sterner of the two compared to her husband. Additionally while they do try to teach the girls, it’s repeatedly stated that their lifestyle doesn’t allow for conventional education hence why their teaching priorities center around creative thinking, problem solving and survival Ray is a single parent trying to balance protecting his kids with teaching them discipline. He also has Otto who is notoriously more stubborn and reckless whereas Jimmy is at least quick to figure out where he went wrong and correct himself

    As someone with at least a small amount of outdoors exploration experience, and as a formal scout (which definitely taught me a lot even if I don’t routinely go climbing Machu Pichu), Nigel’s expectations were genuinely reasonable. The only major fault I can see with his actions (and frankly I think as a character he would do this, but for the sake of storytelling he didn’t) was he didn’t really explain thoroughly why he was limiting her, when that really should have been a conversation from the getgo. Mountain paths are dangerous, even ones that are well tread. Cliff edges can be volatile and break at any time if you aren’t prepared. Staying close together in a snow blown path helps ensure that no one gets lost or left behind, or worse fall off. Frankly that could have been done a bit better by him tying himself to the rope too, as having ahold of it would only help so much if she tripped, but I think he was also anticipating the possibility that he might fall and drag her along with him. And frankly, in a real world scenario, rash decisions similar to hers have gotten many people killed. The snow blew away her foot prints and her hat was the only real indicator of where she may have gone, so she was really only saved by the power of plot armor here.

Good thing he’s not grouped with Ginger Foutley’s father, David Read, Buck Cluck, Darth Vader, Ian Hawke (before Chipwrecked), Doofenshmirtz’ father, Felix Boulevardez (because he doesn’t punish LaCienega as he should), the bad parental figures

    as pointed out by others: nigel was enforcing normal mountaineering safety protocol. the "leash" is something used irl [though i think normally you just hold it, but i can see for more dangerous mountain paths you actually do get tied up, and she clearly wasn't going to just hold on to it.], cliffs crumble and fall away easily and while the lama might have felt secure that doesn't mean that eliza would've been able to hold on if the ground caved and it needed to leap away. side note: I *knew* nigel was the one to save her, i just wasn't sure how she'd realize it

    Another thing to mention is, that he also risked his own life to protect his daughter by putting his jacket on her and creating the iglo with only a pullover on, which definitely wouldn't help against the snow storm... Also, telling his wife what happened would've for sure caused her to go nuts and never trust him again with taking care of the childre, basically turning her into a complete helicopter parent. On the other hand can you argue that telling her could also destroy the trust his daughter may have in him as she could see him now as a "snitch".

    Shawn, Thank you for creating these "smashing" videos and for the hard work and research you put into each and every video. :) Watching your videos has been helping me through a difficult time and I deeply appreciate it. You've really helped so many people and I'm glad that you are aware of the positive impact you make on the daily lives of those that watch your videos. First of all, I completely agree with what you said about Nigel being a wonderful dad and the reasoning for his 'helicopter parenting' style in this particular episode. Second, I am looking forward to your upcoming video(s) dragging the parenting styles of not-so-great dads. Pointing out their bad parenting styles serves the positive purpose of highlighting what the good dads are doing right and gives them even more credit for what they do. I wanted to leave a suggestion for a possible future video in the series focusing on dads. There's a strong chance that you've already thought of this, but just in case I want to suggest it anyway since it never hurts. I was thinking about the "Parents Day" episode of Hey Arnold! and I firmly believe that Grandpa Phil should be included in highlighting great father figures. I think there needs to be some representation for 'non-traditional families' in the series too. :) I hope that you and your family are all doing well and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this comment. As always, I look forward to the next video!
