Processing Childhood Trauma With CatDog…

Ойын-сауық

Looking back at classic Nicktoons, it's astounding how well they hold up nowadays. One standout show that really holds up, in my opinion, is CatDog. It's a show that puts an amazing twist on a classic trope in such a special way that only this show can pull off. Looking back at this show at face value, it's definitely an interesting adventure of two brothers. But on today's nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to look at the show under kind of a different view. One that will change how you look at CatDog Forever...

I actually always preferred cat and sympathize with him, both him and dog are actually pretty self centered people. Dogs self-centeredness is extremely impulsive whereas Cats self-centeredness is in response to that impulsivity. So much of the show is showing dog wanting to do something and then just doing it, never asking Cat, never taking a break, never paying attention or caring about Cat getting repeatedly hurt or how he feels. It's only when Cat is pushed to his limit and snaps does Dog finally listen. Yes Cat too is often in the wrong for how he often goes about getting his way for once, with lies, insults and manipulation, it's never right to do those things, I can still understand why Cat feels he needs to. Imagine being a calm, person that enjoys their quiet time, relaxing with a good book, having a nice dinner at an upscale place once in awhile, socializing with people that share your hobbies... But you almost never get to do what you enjoy because you're literally attached to an extremely impulsive extrovert who drags along to what they want to do constantly, never giving you a moments peace, even dragging you to people who bully and hurt you on a regular basis. I can't really blame someone for doing whatever it takes just to get some time to themselves, to finally do what they want instead of constantly being forced to do something else. Cats also more empathetic to Dog too, like I said earlier, Dog rarely ever notices that Cats been pushed to the limit unless it's explicitly told to him. On top of that, when he does notice, half the time his response is usually to agree to something extreme rather than to simply exercise a little bit of self control and awareness. Meanwhile Cat usually notices Dogs unhappiness a lot sooner, without being told and usually takes more appropriate measures to cheer him up or encourage him. I think adults who were fans of the show as a kid should rewatch the show because I feel a lot of them would be able to better understand Cats perspective now rather than just "Dogs fun and Cats not so Dog is always right."

  • @SupHapCak

@@kiayaplews8593 CatDog had real parents who gave birth to them, and the foster/adopted parents were the yeti and the frog, then Winslow (going by the special) These parents must have lived in the mouse and hydrant house (Cat and Dog also appear to think their parents would be conjoined which imo is just them being unrealistic) What's interesting is Dog was going off of his memories of the yeti and the frog, which is where he found all the theories and evidences about them and their whereabouts -- which all turned out to be true. Also who didn't see "Dog was right about everything" coming - give me one for the bingo. Anyway I'm still curious about the dog and cat who gave birth to them, because they ARE conjoined twins (supposedly) All we know about them before they were found on the ledge in front of the cave is they were found on a ledge. They could have been thrown, or they could have crawled off and fallen down. However I do want to talk about Winslow being their parental figure. Winslow does lament not having Cat and Dog to harass anymore if they move out, but I think with all the emphasis on "they cared for you and made you who you are" coupled with Winslow showing up (and refusing to help/not being allowed to help them) any time they got into trouble, it was a huge missed opportunity to actually A: Let Winslow help them when they were in serious trouble they couldn't get out of on their own and B: More time spent showing how Winslow had essentially raised them from the age of 1 or 2 (Cat doesn't have any memory of his parents, foster or birth parents, so they were very young which means Winslow also put them through school) and how Winslow had been there the whole time. While the yeti and frog was a good ending, it would have been a nice ending if they go there and don't find anyone (their birth parents possibly vacationing, lost them, moved on) and Winslow is there to actually be sympathetic for once. As the line goes, Winslow was the one who fed them and raised them and made them who they are. Cat was also kind of right about the frog and yeti -- they may have been out looking, but they didn't go in a straight line to the most populated places to say "our baby is hard to miss -- it's a cat and dog on the same body" or jump in after them when it was clear they couldn't be pulled back to the cave. All that being said, this is under the pretext they didn't write this story on a whim. They hadn't planned this to be Cat and Dog's origin from the beginning. More info-dumping, sort of unrelated -- they had a "Catdog joins a freakshow" episode but before that I kind of thought they had escaped a freakshow because of their unusual names. Just Cat and Dog. Also that episode kind of sucked because I don't know what the message really was supposed to be, and I kind of wanted to see them get angsty.

@@SupHapCak This episode, as a whole, was an interesting look into CatDog's past. looking back at the episode indicating that they knew the whereabouts of their real parents at one point, one wonders if the writers, at some point, retconned this idea to them being adopted after being separated from their real parents as babies. A similar thing seems to have been done with Chuckie from Rugrats' backstory, as in the episode Barbecue Story, Chaz was seen with a woman who appeared to be his wife and in Chuckie vs. the Potty, Chuckie mentions his mom taking him off the bottle, meaning that he originally did have a mother, but that also got retconned later.

Can you really blame Cat for being kinda frustrated? The guy just wants his mail. Imagine wanting a prize possession your parents sent you or a letter from your grandma only for your friend to scare away the mailman. Even as a kid as much as i felt bad for dog I knew I'd be pretty annoyed if I didn't receive the mail. It woulda been nice if Cat at least came to a compromise with Dog of helping him win this one but letting the next mailman deliver his mail this time. Looking back, Dog comes off as a bit of a "Designated Hero" in this episode as we're meant to see him as the good guy and Cat as the bad guy in this situation, when, in reality, Cat is the more sympathetic character. He just wants his mail and is waiting for an important piece of mail, which no one would fault him for as it's something everyone can relate to, and Dog never lets him have the chance.

  • @crocoshark4097

No mention of the fact that Cat is completely justified in being bitter that Dog won't let him get any of his mail and Dog doesn't actually deserve to drive away every mailman that comes by? Alright. If the mailmen hadn't purposely teased and humiliated Dog when he was down I would've sided with them pretty much completely. Would've been nice if Cat was like "I'll help you get back in shape and beat that guy if you promise to let Mervis deliver the mail after this."

I've always had a soft spot for Cat since I discovered the show. He was always wronged, and he was always treated as the unlucky one, and Dog was always the lucky one who was loved by everyone, and in the end Cat was always hated by everyone. But no one ever stopped to think about his life. He takes care of everything, including his brother, pays the bills, buys everything in the house, and is always tired and stressed. And I recently found the show's Wiki, and read this: "Cat is often seen crying" (or something similar). In other words, Cat is always tired, and even though he tries his best, he is never valued by people, and ends up frustrated in the end, and it seems that tears take away his pain and anger from within him. A somewhat sad and realistic detail, but unfortunately, real, or almost. I like when he's happy, because that's when his moments of relief and joy are, where the stress and weight of adult life disappear into the distance, and so he can enjoy this moment, resting and being happy instead of being selfish, rude, or bad-tempered.

I was astonished to see this pop up in my feed, and in the best possible way. I'm sure I'm not the only one who found CatDog very relatable as a multiple. I'm glad you took time to consider this perspective, and you were very thoughtful and kind with it. I haven't thought about Dog being a more child-like part. But now that you mention it, it's obvious. Cat does a lot of the adulting, and Dog benefits. Others have pointed out that both of these characters are a bit selfish and self-centered, but I always thought Dog was the more egregious offender on that front. Cat, more often than not, seemed to consider Dog's feelings much more often than Dog considered Cat's throughout the show. Doesn't excuse the shitty stuff Cat does at times, but Dog often seemed to get off scot-free. These two are both flawed, and yet they both are kinda endearing and sympathetic characters, even when they do crappy things. I honestly wouldn't have minded seeing Dog suffer more consequences from his own actions. I want to say there are episodes of the show that explore this, but it's been years since I've watched the series, and have only rewatched a handful of episodes from the beginning of the series as an adult. I struggle a lot with just watching TV and movies, even KZread at times, so its a slow process (as is a lot of stuff besides this; all trauma-related and stuff I've been doing my best to work on over the years). But I'll get there. But the dynamic being what it is, with Cat experiencing more consequences (and social isolation, I think) than Dog showcases something very real that's very common for multiples to experience. Parts not appreciating or understanding each other, and what they do to help the system as a whole is extremely common. Traumatized parts not appreciating what the daily-life parts do to survive, or even how those are also traumatized in their own way (hence avoidance and dissociation, which is why this level of dissociation is a coping mechanism for survival for the whole person). ANPs (apparently normal parts; these are the daily life parts that seem normal, but are actually traumatized themselves) also tend to not appreciate what the traumatized parts do for the system. Since they also tend to be younger and more childlike, it's easy to derride them as burdens and even feel resentful of them. But them holding the trauma is not easy. It isn't for anyone. And something that anyone unfortunate enough to live with DID knows, if they are able to get into therapy with someone who actually knows what they are doing (or even without, because access to quality mental healthcare for this and other "severe" conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, is very low world-wide; access to useful and accurate information is getting easier on the Internet, but there is a metric fuckton of false information and lies, too), we all go through the process of learning to understand each other, appreciate one another, and do our best to meet each other's needs. Some of us do this even well before therapy, or even before actually understanding what is going on, at least if your system is set up like mine, with ANP that actually talk with each other because it was necessary for survival. But even if not, simply getting yourself into a safe place, frequently in adulthood, is enough for more traumatized, unknown parts to make themselves known. It's easy to not know you even have this condition, or have trauma to begin with. And no two systems are the same. Even looking at medical literature, professionals often reduce parts down to very rigid roles. And just like any individual, all parts of one whole self never fit neatly into any box. I've rambled. Whoops. TL;DR, your perspective helped me feel more empathy for Dog. And this particular episode you commentated on is a fantastic one to illustrate this perspective. Sorry for the essay. But I really am thrilled you were interested enough in this to make a video on this wrt CatDog. You did a great job with this! Seeing this did remind me of the community post I commented on of yours a while back. Probably the poll that asked which show I liked more, with the choices being CatDog and Ren & Stimpy. I was surprised at how difficult the choice became, because I love both of them for different reasons. I ended up picking CatDog and went into why in the comments. And with the passage of time, I forgot about it. Hence my astonishment seeing this in my feed. I think it's unlikely that my comment alone is what got you interested in the topic. But my gut feels a like there's a non-zero chance it may be a piece of it, or a small catalyst to it. So whether it's because I helped pique your interest, or because it just happened to be a coincidence, I'm very happy to see this regardless. Kudos, mate. P.S. sorry for essay. Lol. I decided to keep it as-is rather than delete or change it. Idk. It felt important to keep it the way it was.

Looking back, I recall, in my younger days, also feeling sorry for Dog and unhappy with Cat during this episode, but now, looking back, I see Cat's side of the story much more, more so after watching this video. Cat and Dog do very much seem like two halves of the same personality(Which, one wonders if Peter Hannan might have had in mind) which makes Cat much more relatable as an adult. Looking at this episode in particular, Cat was expecting mail and Dog's chasing the mailman away prevented him from ever getting it; Cat likewise might have felt bad for all of the mailmen, paperboys and girl scouts Dog chased away, which might be why he got after Dog for his past failure, which, itself might have been a way to bring Dog back to reality(Though I certainly don't advocate doing things this way). Cat likewise was presented as sympathetic in later episodes, more so as it seemed that he could never succeed at anything just because the writers thought it was funny.

I know that it wasn't meant that way, but it felt to me like an enabling of bad habits, after all, Dog chasing them and ripping their pants is rather a bad thing. I feel that it would be more satisfying if Cat helped Dog find a new, fulfilling yet harmless hobby, and come to terms with that, although the lizard guy is a douche, it doesn't have to be his problem, and something like racing could be suitable for Dog's need for speed. But I know that I'm reading too much.

My perceptions have been changed thats for sure. As an adult I can see where Cat is coming from, he cant just kick back and relax like dog does. Someone has to keep things running and you can resent people being able to have more fun than you. Seeing Dog all depressed because of the mailman was really hard to watch especially when the othe rmailmen just walke dinto their house and did those terrible things to him, it made me sick and mad, but I'm glad he got back at them WOOF!!

Ah yes. An iconic episode FR. I occasionally think of this episode for reasons I myself don’t know. This episode was always a definite watcher as it just always hit the right points of entertaining. The lizard being a mailman was also cool as it reminded me of days I’d spend trying to catch lizards and I remember thinking MOOD. Lizards are fast lil suckers, and it takes some level of luck and tact. Didn’t blame dog for missing. Win some lose some when it comes to lizards.

My boss is definitely on the cay spectrum where I'm more carefree at work and he's like cat all serious and mature. As much as I felt horrible for Dog, he lowkey had the bully scene coming. Those people were just trying to do their jobs and got physically harrassed by him every time. And Cat would miss out on very important mail (like bills). I know that first time created a snowball effect, but still. Lol Glad cat was there for him tho.

This episode is somewhere in my top 10 for this series. After seeing what's become of Dog, Cat shows sympathy and gets his brother to snap out of it and settle the score. That showdown right at the end was definitely a series highlight; from assembling the western uniform and Dog saying "Lets get postal" to the well deserved victory ending with the ever iconic line "I'd best not see you round these parts again, slowpoke!".

I'll be honest, I often sympathized with Cat because I was always (And still am) more introverted and like things just-so, if I want to read and someone keeps bothering me, it gets on my nerves rapidly. I always felt bad that Cat often couldn't get what he wanted because Dog was doing things that got in the way of even simple things- Like Cat not being able to order something he wants through the mail because Dog prevents deliveries from happening. How is that fair at all to Cat? I think Dog very much deserved at least the mild teasing Cat had for him at the start, though not the more in depth and mean teasing others put him through, or making him cry. I think a better end for this episode may have been one teaching of moderation, that both parties can have what they want but they may need to collaborate and work together on it. Like if dog wants to chase delivery people, maybe he can in a different way but still allow the mail itself to be delivered- Such as waiting for them to deliver it THEN chase them AWAY. That way both get what they want- Cat gets the mail, and Dog gets to chase.

It's always important to remember that the people in your life need you as much as you need them. While it might be easy to look negatively at there behavior, the fact that they will help means they don't mean to be a burden. Everyone lives differently. If you're alone and have no one to work with or empathize with, your judgment of others can become misconstrued because you don't have moments to practice empathy and can become jaded towards every little thing others you don't know, will do. It's important to remember that you can come off as just as much of a jerk as they are. Especially if you make that opinion known to (what is, for the most part) a stranger. It can be hard to practice empathy, yet we all have the ability to rationalize, because it's just part of human nature. So if you remember the old saying to "walk a mile in another's shoes" you won't become ignorant of empathy.

I always thought Winslow was the worst. He is not really a good friend towards cat and dog makes fun of them countlessly and bullies them. That was a good roommate either. He’s very messy. They should just get rid of them. See a video about him and how bad he is. At least cat had good reasons to despise dog a little bit bit but together they’re just brothers.

just a random thought; with the reading of catdog being one person the scene where cat pokes fun at dog's old failure could be viewed as a person self-deprecating, potentially having pushed down so much of the pain while still having internalized it, like someone "jokingly" calling themselves a screw-up. pair that with the scene where cat cheers dog up and you have the person realizing that when other people say the same things they'd been saying it hurts and deciding to figure out why and how to fix it.

Viewing them as the same person is entirely unnecessary. They aren’t. That’s the whole point of the show. Why do you need to do that to get empathy for cat? You should have empathy for cat here because he’s being entirely reasonable and just wants his brother not to assault the mailman so he can get some mail and even though he ends up prioritizing his brother’s happiness over getting his mail, he gets “rewarded” as the song at the end states by “never getting that fish.” And that’s just sad, sadder because this is a common occurrence in CatDog, Cat getting punished for doing nothing wrong while Dog gets showered with undeserved rewards. I was actually one of the few people who felt bad for Cat even as a child watching this show and always sort of was pissed at Dog for being a childish, irresponsible pest who gets rewarded for it while the responsible and hard working Cat gets endlessly tortured.

I have been binging it over the last 2 days because why not Anyway your comment makes me think of the episode where Dog becomes a photographer. That episode was a clunker in my opinion. How it is: Cat gets Dog to take up photography because he wants Dog to have an activity that isn't wallowing in garbage. Lola shows up and says "take pictures of everyone but be careful" and of course Dog does it. Dog takes a bunch of embarrassing pictures of their friends and neighbors and hangs them on the wall. Cat, of course, laughs until he sees his own picture and demands Dog take it down -- Dog uses the "freedom of artistic expression" excuse and keeps using it when everyone else is embarrassed by their own pictures. Eventually he takes more pictures and sees everyone is angry, not happy, by his photography and vows to put the camera down and never take pictures again. Dog's reward for his follies? A book deal where a guy offers him millions to publish a book of embarrassing photos. The whole town hears and starts saying "I wanna be published, this is embarrassing, look here" Other than this episode being out of character for Dog (he should know not to sneak into peoples' bathrooms and especially take pictures because he was embarrassed when Lola walked in on him and Cat that time), Cat was more of a catalyst than a character. The rest of this is me looking at alternatives. Scenario 1: This Feels Like a Cat Story The whole story feels more like something Cat would do. Imagine: Cat takes up photography himself, because he's the artistic one. Cat accidentally/or on purpose takes embarrassing pictures of Dog, thinking he wouldn't mind because it's Dog. Then Cat is approached by the book deal guy, and takes money to publish more embarrassing photos, and goes after his friends and neighbors. Dog would laugh at them at first, but then see his own picture and realize Cat didn't get permission from anyone to take the pictures. Then he would do as he always does, and act as the moral compass and tell Cat he can't take/publish pictures without permission. Then even though he learns a lesson, apologizes, and takes the book down, they still beat him up because Cat always gets the raw deal, and then even the book deal guy is mad at him for squidging on their deal. Scenario 2: A Better Dog Story First off, I would cut Lola's lines out of this all together and fill up that space with better writing. In this rewrite, we see Cat already being a photographer instead of just telling Dog to take up photography. Cat is actually a responsible and artistic photographer and would still get an offer with the publisher for his artistic photos. Dog would want to do what Cat is doing, because Cat is like the big brother and Dog acts like the younger brother, following in his footsteps. Then the story would go on, with Dog unwittingly taking pictures of people's private moments -- like it would be done in some way where Dog wouldn't know, but the audience would. Because in my opinion Dog knows not to walk in on people in the bathroom. Dog shows Cat his funny photos, and Cat laughs like he does, but sees his own picture and then tells Dog to get rid of them. Dog would somehow accidentally send the embarrassing photos instead of Cat's photos, the book is published under Cat's name, and everyone gets angry at Cat. Dog would have to stand up and say he took the pictures (if we want Dog to learn the lesson) and apologize and say he wants to give up, and then the book deal guy would come back and say the book was a big hit. Scenario 3: Dog's Book Deal Starts the same as Scenario 2, but the end is basically like the original episode. When everyone is angry and Dog is offered the book deal, he takes the deal and everyone thinks he's betrayed them by agreeing to publish their private moments in a book. Then when the book comes out, Dog has redeemed himself by publishing actually good photos that aren't embarrassing, but the publisher is upset with him and breaks off their publishing deal. My scenarios were just for a better way the story could have been told, but it seems to be the law of CatDog that Cat has to be the one who gets in trouble. I actually tried to think of a way Dog would get in trouble, but they all seemed lazy. The most I could think of was they all beat Dog up like they would Cat in the same situation, but that is actually out of character for everyone else. Nobody really beats up Dog because they just don't. The only time he gets it is when he gets caught up when the Greasers are beating up Cat's half. Dog even "insulted" Lube (they thought he was making fun of Lube but he had a head injury) and they still went after Cat. Cat gets a win in Kooky Prank Day, but only because he (and Dog) was in on it from the beginning. It is a shame we don't have a lot of episodes of Cat winning and Dog losing; they either win together, lose together, or Dog wins and Cat loses. Thank you this has been me rambling about a particular episode of CatDog.
