The Episode of Invader Zim That Was Cited In A Murder Trial...

Ойын-сауық

Invader Zim was such a different show. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it was a sore pink thumb in comparison to everything else Nickelodeon was airing at the time. They wanted to capture that same edgy comedy that was seen in Ren & Stimpy, but in a way that appealed to a new age of kids... And BOY did they get what they asked for. This show got incredibly dark. However, possibly the darkest era in the shows history wouldn't come until years after it would be cancelled. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're checking out The Episode of Invader Zim That Was Cited In A Murder Trial...

    Some fun fact about Invader Zim and Columbine: the network tried to change Dib's design, because Dib has a long black coat, and at the time, making a loner, crazy character with a long black coat wasn't really a good idea. Jhonen fought for it to stay a part of his design and ended up winning

    This and the one episode where Dib and Zim were transported to the alternate world where everyone's a monster are definitely 2 of my absolute favorite episodes from this show. I'd honestly LOVE to see Vasquez do a full on reboot where he can freely write each episode the way he intends it to be, where characters die off and the most absolutely morbid stuff occurs. This show was amazing for being the oddest show at the time and definitely was a show I enjoyed.

    I think what stood out most to me in this episode is the sheer detail they put into the xray shots. Seeing cartoon character proportions with realistic-ish organ placement and organization is just a level of gross uncanny valley I was completely unprepared for as a tween. As an adult I can appreciate a little, perhaps unintentional, commentary on how cartoon characters look like aliens themselves. Sort of like those "anatomically correct anime characters" memes. It's kind of amazing this got all the way to airing but I'm glad it did as it's probably one of the most unique-feeling media experiences I've ever had.

    Invader Zim actually felt more like what Nicktoons was than any other toon to me. Specifically because gross out was in fact its entire gimmick dating back to slimetime and ren and stimpy. Invader Zim carried more Nickelodeon brand than literally everything. SpongeBob, when you really think about it, is the odd one out stylistically, writing wise and vibe wise. As far back as I can recall, I attributed Nickelodeon with this uncanny and uncomfortable vibe from claymation bumpers, aforementioned Ren and Stimpy, and the style that seemed to only be found on the nick channel. Rugrats, The Wild Thornberries and even As Told By Ginger looked like they belonged to the same universe, just like CN did in the day. Invader Zim may have its own style going on, but it was weird, jaunty and yet fluid in a way that just made it BELONG there. And the episodes… yeah. That was Nickelodeon through and through.

  • @DuskTillShawn

    @DuskTillShawn

    I really like the way that you put it! Though there were a lot of shows that stuck to a vibe similar to Rugrats and Doug that weren't really in the vein of gross out humor, the network really did have that gross out kind of feel from the start. It kind of came with the territory of them making it seem like a network made by kids for kids imo. I appreciate this comment! It definitely changed my perception of the gross out humor in this show :)

    There's also the story of Bloody Gir. Allegedly there was gonna be an episode the would have ended up leaving the character of Gir cover in blood, but obviously the network wouldn't allow that. In response the people working on the show hid bloody Gir in several episodes. You can actually find them, the easiest one to find being while the theme song play for the episode Mortos der Soulstealer.

    Looking over this episode, oh my god, Dib keeps saying things that just make Zim go out and steal more organs. He could've just let Zim go to the nurse's office, quietly hoping the Nurse actually does notice something, which maybe she wouldn't 'cause this is a world of stupid people. Was Dib hoping Zim would just go hide from the nurse all day or something? Whatever the case, Dib warned the dangerous alien his life was in danger, incentivizing the whole organ stealing spree. But that's not enough. Dib has to quiz Zim on which organs he has and point out which ones he's still missing. Instead of pointing out that no human even has that many different organs so he's already gone too far. Like, Dib might as well just team up with Zim as his friend in this episode since he's giving him warnings and quizzes so that he knows all his possible mistakes. Dib+Zim=BFFs4life. Edit: 22:00 lol, I wrote my entire rant before even getting to this part of the video where you point out t he same thing. High five.

    I understand why Zim was cancelled, but honestly I felt like it could've been done in such a way now that would match Jhonen's vision, maybe on another medium more accepting to 'darker' themes like HBO Max. I am happy that we got what we did, it's just sad someone had to twist it out of proportion. Reminds me of the Lennon trial and Catcher in the Rye. Unfortunately, Waking Life had the same kind of flack for a murderer siting it as his 'favorite film'.

    Invader Zim is one of my all time favorite cartoons. It satiates my daily desire for dark humor and weirdness. I wish more shows were like it but I guess the fact that there are so few cartoons willing to go all out is part of what made this show so great! Much respect to Mr. Vasquez!

    This is a good video. Also i heard that the creator of the cartoon said there was a plot twist about dib and his family, they were clones of the same race as zim and the dad of dib and his sister were originally an alien but quiet the race for reasons. Its kinda interesting but of course, nickelodeon had to cancel the show😑

    To clarify since this video never mentioned it: the killer’s alibi was thrown out/debunked, because the episode didn’t air on television until long after the murder actually took place. So weather he or the prosecution made it, it was more likely than not from a viewing of the episode while the trial was already going on.
