The DARK Episode of Kids Next Door That Tackled Addiction…

Ойын-сауық

Codename: Kids Next Door is a show that really caught a special feeling in a very unique way. It's one of the few shows that I can say drove me thoroughly to want to replicate it in real life as a kid. However, there were certain episodes of this show that definitely came with some heavy implications. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're checking out an episode of Codename: Kids Next Door that handled a very sensitive topic in a very in your face way.

I feel like Mr. Fizz had raised the legal age for soda consumption just so the children just stop drinking it all, and he can have it all for himself to fuel his carbonated addiction. But regardless, even if the source of addiction is something harmless, addiction still takes a mental toll on a person's life.

Addiction can come from literally EVERYWHERE, regardless of how harmless. There's addiction to social media, addiction to coffee, addiction to candy, and hell, there's even addiction to pickles! People can absolutely become addicted to just about anything. And all addiction should be treated the same way you'd treat any other mental illness: therapy, and medicine.

Thank goodness I go for diet soda. But yeah, despite the codename literally being short for “pre-teens oppose prohibition”, this episode seems more about addiction moreso than prohibition; because wouldn’t it be hypocritical to ban drinking a delicious beverage just so you can have it all to yourself over your own addiction problem? That’s not prohibition, that’s an oppression. Though, as someone who’s autistic, I can relate to Mr. Fizz in some ways; I love soda, and I have a hard time listening to people when hearing more than one voice speak in a jumbled mess; and while I’m trying to be calm, things escalate in a negative way that I needed a drink to calm my nerves; so despite Mr. Fizz being a villain, I’d be happy to share a cold one with him if he was more chill with children. If you want a better example of a “prohibition” episode, I say the SpongeBob episode with the Krabby Patty ban is more fitting, as it focused more on the “Speak Easy” angle than this KND Episode did.

Also the quantity, something people don't understand is that the desired thing isn't about having it 24-7, but a form of escapism. If you have a "i need 1 XXXXXXX per day or else i can't go on" mentality then you're addicted, no matter if you consume a glass of water or an entire ocean

I learned about the Prohibition era of the 1920s in History class back in high school. One of the few things I remember were that Christians hated the idea of even touching a single drop of booze, hence the prohibition laws, the speakeasies, which were like underground bars that sold booze, and this mafia leader named Al Capone who only got arrested for tax evasion. It was a fun topic to learn about.

Even though the episode clearly states that the kids are drinking soda, the fact that it’s being served inside beer mugs would’ve had the censors go crazy on this episode for that alone nowadays. Not saying that the shows that come out today are all bad (there were bad shows in the early 2000s too), but I do miss when kids shows were more blunt about the things that they were talking about. KND was super action packed and quite heavy on the symbolism and messages they conveyed at times. And this wasn’t a show aimed at teens or anything like, it was aimed at young kids.

I was already in my teens when this series aired and my stepfather drank alcohol casually so I already knew this was a jab at prohibition even if it was technically restriction rather than outright ban like the CatDog episode mentioned in another comment. Likewise I recognized that Fizz was meant to be an alcoholic ("It’s a bit early for soda") thus him being the likely figurehead of the age restriction on soda is also meant to be another form of adult hypocrisy which the series was unapologetically critical of by its own creator’s word if I recall correctly.

Damn this brought back some memories. And this show can go into major dark territory. I never care for those loony creepy theories that people were into for the longest time- but some of them actually really work with this show. This as an example, Mr. Fizz being the type of adult to bottle emotions is literally parents and adults that do not understand children predominantly due to their own emotional upbringing. So him acting this way is entirely justified- in his own mind and very likely to anyone of his age and similar upbringing. Is it right?? We all know that’s a fek no- but generational trauma is still its own brand of trauma and villainizing it, though justified in some eyes, can be seen as its own heartless cruelty as he has been hardwired to think that way. Father is another one to look at when taking HIS father as an example (and if you dig the lore it actually goes back MANY generations) you can easily see why he is the way he is. But it all pivots on people that say I don’t want to be my parent because they know it can be better (look at Numbah Zero as key example). If you stop and look at the adults as kids- yes you see the villain because kids can only see as they feel. But now as adults- we feel on an entirely different level. That being said- him stuffing kids in a bottle is horror movie crap and I’m the adult going to jail for kicking his ass.

Very often, quietly dealing with emotions, denying them for the sake of stoicism etc. is confused for "bottling up"(what a load). The boiler theory, the idea that we need to "let off steam" is a roundly discredited theory. Otherwise the purge would make sense. There's nothing wrong with "bottling up" emotions as an adult, or whatever you'd rather call it, the fault lies in people justifying bad behavior afterwards.

@@SeanWintersexactly. But- as I’ve seen from my own experience. It’s still a tragedy because “every adult you’ve ever seen was a kid at one point in their life” but people in that life ruined them and somehow twisted them into thinking that was how it’s meant to be. Some can change…. Others just can’t. And that’s the biggest tragedy of it all.

In general with soda, unless it explicitly says it does not contain caffeine, you should always assume that it's caffeinated, and even after that, you should always check ingredient lists.

Oh my god, this was a real gem of a show. A personal headcanon of mine that makes the show way funnier (and even more wholesome) is that this is all a massive game played between kids and adults in their communities. Like it's all LARPing. I know it doesn't always work for many episodes but as an adult I can't help but think how fun that kind of childhood that would be if you had the whole community in on some silly spy role play. I also remember Numbah 5 growing increasingly annoyed with Numbah 2's jokes as the series went on, then later everyone else got annoyed. It was a good running gag. Edit: Also, I remembered that they handled the topic of spanking really well by using vampire tropes to show how violent parents can make kids repeat the violence. So the show is really pro-child.

I believe both the gangsters and Italian mafia took part in it. The antagonist of this episode was obviously a reference to the mafia since gangsters more commonly wore long coats I believe. The mafia was known for wearing its fancy suits, and the two red handkerchief folds in his white suit gives it away too

I think that a lot of the Number 2 centric episodes did this kind of thing. My favorite being the dinner party with Number 3’s sequel episode where they used chocolate sauce as a pun for getting drunk.

Have you read the book angela's ashes? In real life, prohibition wasnt a wholly bad idea, it had some merit. The father in angela's ashes frequently spends all of his wages on alcohol, leaving his wife and children starving. Half of the six children Angela has throughout the book die, malnutrition and poverty being the primary cause. In real life, at the time, a man could completely screw over his family because of alcohol addiction and their wives typically had very little ability or power to leave. Not to mention a drunk man is much more likely to abuse his wife, and at the time there wasn't much she could do about it

KND was a show we were lucky to have as kids it paid homage to classic movies (King Kong, Spaghetti Westerns, and Jaws) to Comics like X-Men and F4 to tackling big issues like addiction with this episode and talking about Number 2's chocolate addiction this show was amazing and the way it ended still makes me cry

This episode kinda came true. In the summer of 2020, the Mexican government put black restriction stamps on all foods, especially Coca-Cola soft drinks, because it believed children were consuming them. As a result, it hurt sales of their products, which explains why the commercials seem uncreative and dull. And they barely sell promotional toys, pogs and keychains.

Now I ended up realizing they had just called her flat.

This in my opinion was peak cartoon network. And this episode in particular was always one of my favorites. I have always enjoyed history even when I was younger. So I picked up on the prohibition tropes really quick. This episode really covers two things in my view. The big one being conformists (for a lack of a better word) vs rebellion. Which episode does with subtlety of a hammer. The machine bottling kids is a reference to Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall video which used a meat grinder to illustrate the point. And even though censors were still pretty lax back then they wouldn't have gotten way with that. Plus a bottle fits the theme of the episode better. The second thing this episode covers in a more subtle way is addiction through Mr. Fizz. It's aimed squarely at alcohol (again it fits the theme) with some the lines he says “Its to early for soda” and the like. But it can be applied to any addiction. Mr Fizz is clearly going through mood swings and is generally being irritable early in the episode. Those are some of the most common withdrawal symptoms. And when he has a drink as he is getting ready to fight he becomes much more even-keeled. So while the episode does point to the volstead act and says “Yeah that’s stupid”. It's being used more as a vehicle for the moral in the episode.

The AI generated kitchen is just too good. Sink faucet on the stove? Sign me up! I don't mind the continuity errors of the conveyor belt or the bottling machine since I don't watch cartoons for continuity in places I'm only ever gonna see in a single episode. I also feel like they avoided Dr. Fizz probably because they wanted to avoid any chances of some Dr. Pepper knockoff saw them using the name they use for their knockoff and decide to get lawsuit happy. Finally, my personal favorite episode is definitely Operation F.O.U.N.T.A.I.N. as episodes involving the fountain of youth or other means of causing age change (regression and/or progression) in characters have always been some of my favorite episodes in shows.

In the Latino dub the caffeine argument made a bit more sense thanks to the fact that in this dub the beverage was simply called "soda" throughout, which in a lot of places is used as an umbrella term for all sweetened fizzy drinks including cola, and since at no point they specified what kind of soda it actually was we all just assumed it was a caffeinated one and never questioned it. Either way I love this episode and this series as a whole, great video, keep it up.
