Let’s talk about Nicktoons dads (part 1)

Ойын-сауық

This is the first in a series of 3 or 4 videos that I've been wanting to make for a while now. I originally planned to make this one singe really long form video, but I'm in a weird place right now where that isn't an option, however, more news on that to come.
For now, I'm grateful for this life that I live and I'm reflecting on the things I have in life to be thankful for. There's a lot of uncertainty in life. You don't know when you could be taking your last breath or living your last day. There is one thing I know for certain though, and that's the fact that I love being a dad. Becoming a father is probably the single biggest life changing thing that ever happened to me. I'm so lucky to have the opportunity to be a father and I'm incredibly thankful. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to look at one of the greatest Nicktoons dads of all time.
Here's my last spooky season video about Rocket Power:

I like how Rocket Power portrayed the adults in the show. Ray allowed his kids a fair amount of freedom, but never to the point of being reckless or destructive. Tito and Violet were similar, but as they weren't parents, were allowed to be friends with the kids. Merv was a stick-in-the-mud, but had his shining moments. Conroy was both a cool guy and a hardass teacher.

Ray is probably one of better dads because while he does try to instill discipline despite his own laid back nature, which Officer Shirley even trusts him with as mentioned in another video, he does so through fairly reasonable methods and, as evidenced by the footage you used before going into the actual episodes, he doesn’t enjoy having to punish the kids to begin with. It’s also helped by Tito being both his confidant in parenting and practically co-raising the kids with Ray. While the show made clear that the two were purely friends with no romantic interest in each other and Ray would not only ultimately remarry but marry Tito’s cousin Noelani, I wouldn’t be surprised if some thought that the two could’ve been lovers under different circumstances. Going back to how Ray disciplines his kids though, you mentioned the possibility of him being pissed off with both Otto and Rhino. I imagine it’s 75-25 with majority of Ray’s rage being directed at Rhino leading to the offscreen beating Ray gives Rhino. I say this because the face of rage you took note of was preceded by sheer horror and during the storm itself Ray’s primary concern was making sure Otto survives and only punished him once it was safe to do so and even then Otto’s punishment was the loss of surfing privileges and being asked what he learned and to his credit, Otto does acknowledge his mistake and does try to take away the right lesson from this and his guess was even in the right direction: He shouldn’t write a proverbial check he can’t cash

I totally understood Ray being pissed. Rhino should have dragged Otto's little butt back to shore the second he saw him. Instead, he stayed out there and risked Otto's life just to catch a wave.

I know it's not a Nicktoons Dad but you should do a review of "A Goofy Movie". The way Goofy tries to bond with his son, in that, is so realistic & magical. I know it's a cheesy movie but I love it so much. Especially the dance at the end!

I agree with this! Raymundo was one of my favorite cartoon dads growing up. I do cut Stu a bit of slack as a dad though since the babies escaped from literally everyone who watched them. Even in the case of the movie, they had Lou watch them multiple times before and they got into trouble. Plus, he and Didi were tired from dealing with a newborn that didn't really allow them to sleep

My guess for next father would be Grandpa Phil from Hey, Arnold or Chaz Finster from Rugrats. Both men had to put their grief aside to raise a child (Phil losing his only son, Chaz losing his wife), and while not perfect, show a lot of love and support for their children. Edit: Thought of some others! Professor Utonium. He's the father of three superpowered creations who could destroy him with minimal effort, yet he'll die trying to protect them. He's both mother and father to the girls, and there are few times where they would openly defy him, not due to fear, but solely because they love him. He's like if Victor Frankenstein chose to stay for the monster. And probably the only one who isn't a single father, Nigel Thornberry. He's a brave explorer who'd gladly stare death in the face (even singing gleefully as he's dying from lionfish venom), but he'll only show fear when his children are in danger (or any child, as is what happened in Rugrats Go Wild). Him being an adopted father to Donny helps his case too.

I would certainly agree that Ray was an amazing dad he taught his kids well. There was even an episode where the Squid's dad came to town and though he gave his son expensive stuff he didn't pay much attention to him. Another parent I believe deserves a shout-out would be Nigel Thornberry from The Wild Thornberries. Yes, he let his kid explore the jungles but it allowed her to have her own adventures. And at the end of the day he really did care about his kids.

One of the reasons i really vibe with rocket power outside being the demographic it was made for some skater punk kid into outdoor activities and games: my dad was a very simular parent as raymoondo. Basically teaching that responsibility is not a limit but a freedom. If you understand things it allows you to engage with them more fully. That includes sports and games. I honestly grew up thinking that was just the norm until i met far more disfunctional families through my friends

its implied throught the series that Ray didint just surf as a hobby,he was actually a former professional surfer...to a point where he had a nickname and had his own company (rocket boards)...this ontop of thehim not only knowing rhinos real name...but said it in a way that implied he knew it would piss him off all pretty much point to them having a history. Ray was always a steller dad...not only for the reasons youve mentioned but the fact that he extends this relationship to same and twister acting as s psudo father figure to them as well....which is likely a very positive influence given that twister's parents are rather apathetic of him...and sams father is all but non-existant (as is the case with many children of divorced parents). added onto this being his very proactive appoach of consistantly being in and sharing with thier lives is part of what makes them see eye to eye and establish mutual respect...thats something you very rarely see between parents and children.

Timmy's dad is the worst of them. Timmy's parents were victims of flanderisation or whatever it's called as well. Timmy's dad clearly cared about him in earlier seasons as shown in episodes like Might Mom and Dino Dad in-spite of that dumb bike he wanted Timmy to ride in the episode that you mentioned. So I agree with you about his dad, but I feel he got worse as the show went on. Compare Timmy's parents finding out about how Vicky treats him in Channel Chasers vs the episode Vicky gets fired. (Spoiler.) In Channel Chasers they were going to fire Vicky for abusing Timmy until Timmy interfered with the magic remote he had in the movie, while in Vicky gets fired, Timmy recorded her abuse and they rationalized it away or dismissed it and only fire her because Timmy tricked her into erasing a tape that was important to them.

Your way of becoming a father wasn't ideal, but it's awesome that you stepped up to the plate. My girlfriend has a daughter, and the BD wants fuck all to do with her. I don't understand how a man can do that, but it's far from a unique one. I've only dated my girlfriend for 5 months, but I've done more fatherly things than her bio father has ever done. It's a wonderful feeling. Also, off-topic, but I saw my girlfriend's 8-year-old brother wearing a Rocket Power shirt the other day. He had no idea what Rocket Power was.

Nice one dude. School is a joke. Smart people don't need to be in it. If you were just looking to hang out with your friends, it's because school wasn't stimulating enough. That's the problem, it's for average people so smarter kids get bored (and struggle) because it's easy & boring. Being a parent is the best job, hands down. Great video.

I feel like while Drew and Stu arent the best dads, I dnt think theyre too bad xD. Drew spoils Angelica but he does sometimes doesnt let her get away with her shenanigans, especially if shes caught redhanded. Stu generally is a good dad but I think given he's a freelancer toy inventor down on his luck, he can't really watch the babies properly as he needs to do stuff in his workshop and try to get a client to help with the bills. It doesnt help the babies are hella clever in escaping their play pen xD. Ray's a good dad too, it just sucks his son always forget lessons at the end of every episode.

Lol I was going to be an architect too, many moons ago. It brought me great joy, but I saw turning it into a career as killing the magic. I've struggled with conformity my whole life, not exactly my forte. And a punk architect is a broke one lol. I don't wish to bend my shape to the will of the masses on an artistic level. I'm now a few majors and zero degrees total along, not to mention a decade. Am I happy? Not really. But I don't have to compromise my vision, even if that means it'll never see the light of day.

17:30 I don’t get why Rhino is responsible for other people’s children. Walter’s a douche, for sure… but Raymundo had no right to blame him for the kid’s actions.

Legit, Raymundo was one of those rare TV dads who isn't.......well Homer Simpson, the cliché dad in most TV shows. Ray was a great dad, that cared about his kids, and his friends too; and with a friend like Tito, fuck man. Had two good adult figures in Otto, Reggie, Sam, and Twister's life.

I was never a huge fan of Rocket Power, but I don't dispute Ray as a good father. But I would also argue that the Rhino isn't necessarily obligated to be a role model. As far as I know, he never signed on to be a children's entertainer. And while he probably knows that children look up to him, he is under no obligation to stand as a paragon of morality or smart decision-making. I certainly think people like Rhino should be accountable for their actions when they say or do something that reflects on them personally, such as tweeting racial slurs or saying sexist garbage. But the dumb crap kids do trying to imitate things they see on TV or in real life isn't his problem. It's weird defending someone like the Rhino, because he's absolutely someone I would just roll my eyes at (if my astigmatism allowed me to roll my eyes) if he were a real person.

I understood why Ray was pissed, however. Rhino should have made Otto go right back to shore; instead, he just left Otto out there. Otto could have been killed. So Ray's explosion was 100% justified.

Like, say what you want about rocket power being stupidly 90s with their colorful slang and extreme sport penchant, but it was one of the few cartoons that showed that, some adults can be cool, and even help you out when you need and that we are not perfect but we can still learn Now that I notice A lot of Klasky Schuppo cartoons portrayed single parents and multifaceted adults alongside their young protagonists
