The Rocko's Modern Life Iceberg

Ойын-сауық

Rocko's Modern Life is a show that premiered in an interesting time in the Nicktoons timeline. It premiered at a time where the only other original cartoon options on Nickelodeon were Rugrats, Doug, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. Rugrats was a show unlike anything seen on Nickelodeon at the time it had premiered. It was wacky, zany, and filled with hidden bits of adult humor that would be designed to be enjoyed while parents watching while their kids would be none the wiser. The approach to hiding the bits of adult humor was something that would be relatively new in the Nicktoons world, considering Ren & Stimpy was a lot more in your face with the adult humor. One might go as far as to say that Rocko's Modern Life was an adult's show disguised as a children's show. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we are going to dive deep into the rabbit hole of the Rocko's Modern Life iceberg.

    Rocko was my absolute favorite show as a child. Interestingly enough, when I had my appendix out at 12, the episode with Pinky the Appendix was on at the hospital. Engagement Hook! To answer your Sheila question, in the episode, "Wallaby on Wheels" Rocko develops a crush on a roller-skating fox named Sheila. The kicker is, Heffer knows her! How Heffer knows Sheila isn't explained (though it can be assumed through roller skating), but they are at least cordial with each other and with the two adult jokes involving the name Sheila, I'm headcanoning they dated before and decided to stay friends even if it was never stated in the episode. Engagement Hook. I’ve never heard of iceberg videos until recently seeing this thumbnail, but I’m glad I clicked. As an OG Rocko fan since ‘93, it was a blast to see how many of these references were unearthed from my subconscious once you talked about them. The Brazilian Soccer Team reference genuinely took me by surprise, but then again, that’s why these types of videos exist now, don’t they? Fantastic work, man. Always happy to meet fellow die-hard fans of Rocko who cover every inch of the show they love. Looking forward to more of these for other Nicktoons. The most worrying thing is that I'm in the UK and I am 100% certain all the "banned" episodes were not for me. All of the clips you showed were all memories I remember. One big one was missed was "Tooth and Nail" - the episode where the entire metaphor was drug addiction and going through the 12 step program to conquer it. One scene at the end shows a scenario in the future where Rocko is found in the dumpster chewing a model foot, which someone being in a dumpster is often associated with heroine junkies. Also, obvious innuendo scene: Rocko is hiding his hands in a flank of meat and a monkey puppet.

    One thing this show did that they may not have anticiated, it also was the perfect content for kids that may have been on the edge of aging out of watching cartoons or maybe even an older sibling watching in the room with them. In early 90's, it was still a generally accepted fact that kids would stop watching cartoons as they got older. If you're an older kid watching this, you're suddenly getting a lot of the mature humor since that is around the age you hearing about these things, either in sex ed or whispered amoungst peers. Effectively, you have a completely different show than your little brother. Shows like this along with the Simpsons and later mature animated shows like South Park and Family Guy disspelled the idea of cartoons being just a kid thing by the 2000's. Things like the sudden popularity of anime completely burried the idea futher by 2010.

    Great breakdown of all the hidden jokes/references throughout the show! I've known about plenty of them but there's still a fair amount that I don't think I would've ever noticed. Speaking of the Engagement Hook, for me that comes off as a kind of pun, though idk if it was ever intentional; when making Dr. Hutchinson they were told to give her a good hook -- y'know something interesting, to ENGAGE the viewer per-se. So they gave her a literal hook.

    Very in-depth video. I was 13 when the show first aired and remember the cartoon being advertised for some time before it was aired, but unfortunately Hurricane Andrew hit hard and took the power away and in the after math my parents cancelled the cable TV to save money to repair things that the house insurance could not repair, so I missed out on the show and never got around to watching it. Watching your videos have given me interest in watching the shows I missed out on. Engagement Hook, I wish I can sit down and talk shop about cartoons with you sometime.

It got way better when I rewatched it as an adult, which I believe is what makes Rocko's Modern Life so good... everyone who grew up with it is an adult now and we can appreciate it fully now. Amazing video. I was laughing so hard at some of the jokes that went over my head as a kid. Btw, I am pretty sure censored episodes kept running in Mexico's Nickelodeon all the time (as I remember watching them several times growing up and even as an adult on Nick at nite, which used to air old nicktoons over here). I watched those 2 cartoons as a kid, I can remember it now, when it rarely passed through public broadcast in Montréal, and the few little years my parent managed to pay their cable bill. It was a completely forgotten part of my mid first decade; and it's a very weird sensation! I think, as an adult, your brain is kind of wired to forget as much as possible about that stage of life when it hides traumas and stuff like that... Anyway, you handled every single references and themes perfectly! And I'm sure it must have been quite unique to rewatch so many episodes that you knew, but only in part, from your childhood. Like magically seeing something that used to not be there. Really interested to see how your channel will evolved!

    Loved watching "Rocko's Modern Life" when I was a kid, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. However, I do have a few points I'd like to mention: 1. The Merry-go-round commentary was rather spot-on, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the washing machine in the background as one of the "seats." Incidentally, the pig you did mention might be yet another reference to the movie "Deliverance" 2. I think you missed the mark with the JFK reference. If you listen to the broadcast after Heifer changes the channel, it describes a very tense sporting moment, but Heifer doesn't react to that either. It shows more that he's watching the TV simply to watch the TV, and he doesn't really care about the content. He's just being a mindless consumer, which fits in much better with the overall tone of the ending, where all the mindlessly consuming vacuums have destroyed the town. 3. Lastly, what you said about Mr Bighead coming out as a clown, I view it more as the general hypocrisy that people have in accepting one group or multiple groups of people but excluding others based on such things as race, fetishes, or lifestyle choices.

  • @Lenape_Lady

    @Lenape_Lady

    2 жыл бұрын

    The clown episode is absolutely positively most definitely a reference to straight, successful men being down low. There really isn’t any other way to view it. Esp with Rocko saying “I love rainbows” at the end. It was specifically about hiding being gay. And the episode was trying to teach kids to accept everyone and not bully them/hate them.

  • @ashkitt7719

    @ashkitt7719

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Lenape_Lady I mean, the writers absolutely said that that was their intention and if the episode came out now they would have made it more overt like they did with the character of Rachel Bighead coming out as trans in Static Cling. Which really adds a whole new element to Mr. Bighead saying "I have no son." Because he has a daughter.
