When jinko and satomi said that he needs to pick his words carefully while telling her directly to give up on him he kind of hits a realization there that he needs to be more open to her about this misunderstanding. As you see instead of telling her to give up on him entirely as what kotoko would want to do as they had a conversation after that encounter with kotoko's friends. He explained to her what exactly happened and what's the situation linking him and Matsumoto. He made sure that she understands the explanation by asking her if she really approved of him and Matsumoto together in which the latter responded no.

Thank you i was a fan of the series way back and as i rewatch it multiple times , i now clearly see the motives behind naoki's behaviours towards her. As they grew older and as their responsibilities to each other grew bigger. He realizes more on why he was strict on her in terms of studying and their life in general. It's because he never imagine her life living without him by his side. But if one of them passes away before the other. He hoped he could still face life and the difficulties along with it even without him anymore.

What I hate about naoki as a person as he need something to push him to be a better person like here he needed to be scolded my Jinko and sotomi to be a better person to kotoko in season to komogari pushed him to be a better husband or someone else did he did not become a better person/husband on his own ❤

bc he doesn't know how to do it. he really loves her but when it comes to express feelings, for him is really hard, weird and maybe embarrassing; besides since he never felt romantic love for someone bf kotoko he can't tell exactly what those feeelings are (like jealously) and is hard for him to understand others. Even his mother said that kotoko's love melted his cold heart. A little bit stupid, but in that point I understand Naoki since I'm kinda like him hehe I'd like to have his IQ too...
