My Journey with the Fujifilm X Series, Part 4: How The Little X-T10 Upped the Game Even More!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This fun retrospective series looks back at my 10-year history with the FUJIFILM X Series camera, and the impact that this journey has had on my photography during the past decade. Part 4 is all about how the smaller, lighter X-T10 upped the game even more with faster autofocus performance than the original X-T1, and identical image quality. ‪@fujifilmxseries4081‬ ‪@FujifilmUSACameras‬

    Thanks Dan for episode 4! I adopted the Fuji X series with the X-E1 and X-T1, and I am totally glad that I kept both of them as I moved on to other Fuji X and GFX bodies. I still take the '1-series' bodies out from time to time, and they never cease to amaze me. You mentioned weather resistance... my first ever photo workshop was last December, and I manged to fall in very deep water and submerge my X-H1 and 70-300 lens for about 6 seconds. (Sadly there were witnesses to my stupidity.) The camera body objected within a few minutes, and the lens kept working for several hours. But the next day the lens was working again and the body came back to life after spending a few hours sitting in the sun. Amazing, and none of the people in the workshop that saw me take the plunge could believe that both the body and lens survived such abuse.

    Hi Pat, thanks so much for Sharing your story! I have a friend who fell in up to his chest in a glacier stream with his X-T1. The camera was fine but his non-weather sealed 56mm lens was full of water. I loaned him a different lens for the rest of the trip and he took the 56 home and stuck it in a bag of rice. Six months later he pulled it out and it worked fine, although you can still see the glacial silt inside the lens. 😆

    These cameras take more than expected!!! I was introduced to the XT3 and own now an XT4. The XT4 and associated lens felt from the tripod (all extended legs) into the ground during shoot. It happens at the end of a 12 hour shooting period and humans do make mistakes..! Got a few shots next, just to check the consequences - apparently nothing...I was very curious. Just my chance I had for the following shoot to clean the sensor, as it was dirty beyond acceptable, but nothing related to the fall. Camera body and lens were under Fuji maintenance and additionally to sensor cleaning, I request a thorough check - both (lens and body) are perfect and exactly as day 1, when out of the box. Just facts! Cheers

    What an amazing year and a lot of time on a bike. I've hiked vertical mile switchbacks in the Cascades before I can't imagine (or don't want to) cycling those switchbacks on that Romanian highway. One of the most appealing factors in the Fuji ecosystem is their continued updates and support of these X Series bodies and lenses. Thank you for your explanation on why it's easier to update these mirrorless cameras. I just figured the other vendors were focused on their next big product. Eagerly anticipating your next installment. My journey with the X Series starts with the X-T20. A favorite for social and family occasions. Many Thanks!

    Hey Bob, thanks for your comment. I do love riding those kinds of routes, and the Transfagarashan highway is definitely one of the great mountain roads of the world. And yeas, the firmware updates are indeed one of the neatest aspects of the Fujifilm system. I've heard the product managers talk and they want people to enjoy their cameras for years, and not feel that they have to keep buying a new one every year. I like this mentality. It reminds me of having a favorite musical instrument that you love and use for many years.

    Another enjoyable, entertaining, and informing journey through Fuji Time. The era of the X10 I was not familiar with. It was very interesting to hear about the compact mighty X T10, & the auto focusing system, that the Fuji 1 later adopted. I was happy with my X T 1 at that time, it fit me perfectly! Your adventure Boat Trip was certainly interesting. You and Fuji were a great match, helping and learning from one another!! Congratulations on your article in Outdoor Photography!! That was fantastic!! I think I remember the article, Aug 2015. It is certainly helpful to learn more about the different cameras with your journey through Fuji Time! This series provides an excellent picture of how the fuji industry changed and grew over time, while listening to the needs of their fans. Providing the firmware updates shows that Fuji listens and cares! Thank you Dan for doing this informative series!!

    I watched now all the episodes since this one here, starting from the beginning. Your way of combining gear talk with actual travel experiences is very inspiring for me, as I also have my X-T1 and somewhat thinking about selling it for an X-T2 or even X-T3. Watching your trips and the great photos you've shot, I feel like it's not about the gear as standalone, but more about the experiences that you connect with it. That leads me to the thought, that I'd rather keep my X-T1 and better spend my money for nice trips with friends and family. Thanks for the inspiration about Romania as well. This not-possible-to-spell mountain road somewhat kept my attention and I should place it on my bucket list. Greetings from Germany!

    Hello Dr. Wurst. Thank you very much for your thoughts. Yes, although the improved technology of the newer cameras can matter, what is more important is the skill, technique and overall familiarity of the user for whatever tool they're using. So, while the X-T2 and X-T3 are indeed more capable than the X-T1 for shooting some kinds of subjects, there's no reason you cannot still continue to make great looking images, if indeed you're still satisfied with how it performs. And yes, the other huge thing is getting out there into the world, and putting yourself in places and in front of subject matter that truly inspires you. That's a good way of putting it: often times the best money spent is not on new cameras, but on nice trips. Romania is an interesting place, and there is a lot of German history there. The Transylvanian Saxons built the fortified churches and used them as front line defenses against the constantly invading Ottoman armies during the late Middle Ages. Even today, there are many German families who have relatives or vacation homes in Transylvania. That's how we became interested in Romania, one of our German friends told us that her parents were actually from Transylvania and her cousins still had a house there, where our friend would vacation when she was younger. You can see more photos from our Romania trip here: adventures.danbaileyphoto.com/bikepacking-in-transylvania

    @@DanBaileyPhoto I'm sticking with Fuji as they give me what I want and need in a camera. I see no reason to change or upgrade. I've taken a long hard look at what I love to shoot, and it's mostly landscapes, and my X-T2 can do everything that I require of it. So, I plan on remaining a Fuji X shooter. My photos might never change the world (and I will probably never be the world's most talented photographer). However, with that said, I enjoy getting out there and shooting with my kit, and that is worth its weight in gold and then some. It's the experience that is absolutely joyful, and that's what the Fuji X system gives me, that experience of man and camera working as one. Great series Dan! I can attest to the benefits of Fuji mirrorless cameras. I began my photographic journey shooting slide film a Canon E1-n with their L series zoom lenses. Great gear, but heavy and large. My shoulders likely still have furrows carved in them from heavy shoulder bags and backpacks. But they did shoot great in all kinds of weather. I shot slide film back the, and it was mostly Fujifilm. I loved the saturated colors, especially Velvia exposed at ISO 40, or minus 1/3 stop of light. Colorful, contrasty, superfine grain. At that ISO, a sturdy tripod (read “heavy”) added to the weight of my photo kit, which did not diminish when I switched to Canon’s 5D digital family of cameras. Many calendars came and went, and I grew older and slower. I began to look at lighter, digital camera gear. I wanted small form factor, light weight, and capable of the vivid colors I loved so much from my Velvia days. I also wanted high ISO ability, because the tripod was also burdensome. After much research and review of many makes and models, I opted for a Fujifilm X-E2, and a began to grow my family of Fuji lenses. Accustomed to zooms, I felt pretty happy with the 18-55 and the 55-200. What a huge reduction in weight and bulk! I could carry this small kit afield all day in a smallt was exposed to melted, light bag. I left the tripod at home because the high ISO performance and OIS negated the need for it. My Fujifilm collection of cameras and lenses grew, and then shrank again as I’ve pared my kit down to what I like and use most: an X100F (my favorite and go anywhere / everywhere camera) tutors me in creativity with it’s single, flexible 35 mm ffe lens. An X Pro 2 with the three original primes (18f2, 35f1.4, and 60f2.4) are a great walkabout and travel kit for me. An X-T2 with four Fujicrons is my outdoor, foul weather kit. I had the XT-2 with me at the Grand Canyon during a “Snow-mageddon” event last year where it eventually froze up on me. The falling snow it was exposed to all day melted then as temps fell again the water froze rendering the top deck dials unable to turn. No fault of the camera and it worked just fine once the liquid dried off. The X100F, carried in a warm, dry jacket pocket, saved the day and gave me some of the best images of the snow mantled Grand Canyon the entire trip. I still have the X-T20 & original zooms as well. I just love them so much and they are so light, portable and versatile. All of my camera bodies now share the same sensor, and are almost identical in the dial and button arrangements, making the transition from camera to camera effortless. I shoot entirely in those amazing JPEG modes, and have created some of my own custom setting. I edit everything in Snapseed, on my iPhone or iPad, and I’m more than satisfied with the final image. To all the creative geniuses at Fujifilm, thank you, thank you, thank you. You have kept photography by camera alive! I’ll never not own a camera, and I’ll never own anything but Fuji cameras and lenses. And thank you Dan for getting the word out about Fuji gear and it’s outdoor capabilities. You helped my navigate my GAS stage, and your images really helped make me aware of the quality available in the small bodies and lenses. It has changed my photography experience immensely!

    Dan, I'm watching all your videos though I don't always comment. This time, though, I feel I must since you're talking about the little guys, i.e., the X-T10/20/30. My first experience with te Fujifilm X System was with the X100s, probably the biggest case of "I don't need it but boy do I want it" photo purchase of my life. I was shooting Nikon dSLRs at the time, and I bought that little Fujifilm camera a whim. I was shocked to see the quality of the images I was able to get out it. This was definitely not a toy! The X100s accompanied me as a second camera on most of my photo trips, and sometimes as the only camera I took. By late 2019, it became more and more difficult for me to carry my Nikon D750 and the FX lenses, so after researching alternatives, I naturally looked to Fujifilm since I so enjoyed (and still enjoy) the X100s. The X-T30- had been introduced a short time earlier, and the first time I picked it up, it was love at first sight! The image quality is just amazing. so going to an APS-C sensor was no problem at all. And the Fujifilm lenses? No complaints! Don't get me wrong: I loved my Nikon dSLRs, but my gear weighs a fraction of what it used to and the image quality is awesome! However, this is only part of the story. The other part is that Fujifilm cameras are simplify more fun to pick up and use than any other camera I have ever used. Coming as I do from the film days and SLRs (a Minolta SR-T-303 in my case), the way my X-T30 works is incredibly intuitive. The physical dials make all the difference to me. So enjoyable has this experience been (and still is) that I tell people that while I may have DOWNsized, I UPgraded. Thanks for this series of videos. They are a lot of fun, and I love the photos you include. Keep yup the good work!

    Dan, thanks for such interesting videos. It’s good to hear your experience with the various Fuji cameras. I have an X-T2 that I bought about a year ago. I was basically switching over from a Pentax DSLR and a Sony a6000 both of which I only really used on Auto mode. Anyway, I really like the X-T2 and the Trans 3 sensor and I am leaning to shoot more using manual settings. I recently wanted to get a Fuji with the trans II sensor and didn’t want to spend too much, right now Fujis on the used market are so expensive. I found an X-T 10 for I felt a decent price and purchased it. I have not had a chance to really shoot with it but was worrying maybe I should have spent a little more and got the X-T1. But after watching this video of yours I feel like maybe the X-T10 is a fine option since the sensors are the same and they provide the same image quality. So thanks for sharing all that info about the two cameras. I think what I really need to do now is invest in some Fuji lenses with autofocus. I currently only have 3rd party, manual focus prime lenses for the Fuji’s. I am going to look into your site more and your books and courses. Thanks again. Juli

When I look through my image library, many of my favorite all time images were made with the X-T2, and they look as good as anything I've shot with the X-T3, 4 and 5. @@DanBaileyPhoto well, before heading to Australia, I rented the Fuji 18 - 135mm and I was very happy with it. I left that lens on most of the trip and it was the lens I got the great photos with. The other lens I used was a small macro lens I purchased, it's a Meke 60 mm F2.8. I use that for macro and some walk around shooting, landscape-type stuff while I am in nature. I recently purchased a crazy zoom for the X series, I have not received it yet. I hope I like it, I tried to watch videos and reviews on it, it's the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD . I am a late adopter of the Fuji system. I got the X-T1 in 2019 used, with the 18-55 and 55-200. My X-T1 was stolen from inside my car. I found a really good deal on an X-E1 for $170! When I saved some more, I bought the X-T2. I actually still miss the X-T1, the x-trans2 was amazing! But… the x-trans 1 on the x-E1 was sooo good! Last year I lost my camera bag, where I lost my x-e1 and all my Fuji lenses. Now I still have the X-T2 and bought the 16-80 f4. Planning to get the 70-300 when i save up enough. But the X-E1 is irreplaceable. The quality of that sensor and the images it produced was so good!

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    Whew....What a story! I actually pulled out my X-E1 the other day, and recently looked back at some of my older images from that camera (see in Ep. 2: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGWr2aNwnqSsibg.html), and I agree, even though the camera performance was pretty primitive compared to the X-T1 and later models, the images were simply gorgeous. Personally, I don't think they're necessarily better or worse than images from later models, because each new generation, especially the X-T2 had much better color rendition with certain red and magenta tones, that the original X-Trans sensor had trouble with. That said, just as with film, perfect reproduction is hardly the main ingredient for great images. It's often those imperfections that contribute to the specific style and beauty of things like art, photos and music. Either way, I absolutely love the images I've gotten from every one of my X Series cameras, but I've also loved every one of those cameras, and feel that each one had a special kind of magic, as well as a collection of memories that will forever be attached to them. if Fujifilm is watching the comments.... then please bring a camera just for photographers only. no video features needed! what we need it is excellent low light capability similar to full framed sensors... 26mp size is more than enough for a small sized sensor. the pixel density would only decrease if you increase the megapixel size i believe. someone correct me if i am wrong.

    Thanks for your comment and your feedback. Yes, in theory, a higher pixel count does mean smaller pixels, which can have less light gathering ability, but with BSI sensor technology and advanced image processing, this is becoming less of an issue with today's cameras. Models like the X-T3 and X-T30 do have video, but they're much more geared towards still photography, and then offer very good low light performance. What camera are you currently using and what do you like to shoot?

    am new to photography and currently using Sony Alpha 6000. would love to shift towards Fujifilm. waiting for May to come new Fujifilm sensor coming. i will hope that they would not increase the megapixel size. there is another problem for camera enthusiasts like me to process these big sized images in computer. i personally think 26 mp is more than enough for printing on decent regular sized paper. nobody would want to see the print inches away for details. they are meant to be seen from far away.

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    2 жыл бұрын

    I agree, with more MP, you have bigger files and more computer power needed to process. It will be interesting to see what Fujifilm unveils this summer. That said, I've never been too concerned with what might be coming next, because I'ver always been 100% happy with the image quality and performance of whatever current X Series model that I'm using at the time. At some point, I stopped worrying about pixels and noise, and instead focus on things like light, moment and being in the moment in my current location. That's what photography means to me. Slightly less noise, that you only see when you put your face up close to the image, is hardly the deal breaker for any of my cameras. What kinds. of subjects do you like to shoot?

    oh one more thing, with better low light capability one could go for smaller lens size having widest aperture at f4 instead of standard 2.8. i believe the sizes n weight of lens would reduce too. not that apsc lens are big but constant aperture lens like 16-50 2.8 .... the size n weight of this lens with constant f4 would be better. i believe stacked sensors are the future from every camera brand. boon for apsc users.

Nikon and Canon did not have dual cardslots at the time, so I did not consider them. I tried the x-t3 and really loved it. Was way better in low light, had great ergonomics. I don't have to buy two (more expensive) X-T1s (or X-T2s or X-T3s, etc.); I can always get the same quality image on the smaller camera if something should happen to my "bigger" main camera while I'm out shooting.

    Indeed! That’s easily the best thing about that series: equal image quality as the top tier models. That’s not something that most companies do. I think it was a brilliant move. What kinds of subjects are you shooting these days?

    I started with Nikon film cameras back in the early 2000's ( n65 f90 and f100) took a long break aft all my gear was stolen. When I was able to start up again I got ahold of the XT2 it changed everything for my photography just the way the cameras are designed with the anolog dials it was love at first shot. Hardly a day goes by that I dont pick it up and shoot something with it. The camera just makes sence no menue diving( once you set everything up) everything g you need is right there on top. The best way to describe my experience with Fuji cameras is, the camera just gets out of your way and lets you take images with confidence.

    Hi Frank, thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying my X Series eBook. Between the X-T5 and X-H2: For the most part, both of those cameras are identical in terms of sensor, processor, settings and specs. The X-H2 does have slightly higher video specs (higher bit rate) and with the faster CFexpress Type B memory card and larger buffer, it's able to shoot many more images at higher frame rates. For example, using the mechanical shutter at 15 fps, the X-T5 is rated to capture 119 JPEG frames, 39 compressed RAW frames and 19 uncompressed RAW frames before the buffer fills up. When this happens, the camera will stop shooting until it finishes writing the images from the buffer to the card. This can take a few seconds or more. At 10 fps, though, the X-T5 jumps to 1,000+ JPEGs and 56 compressed RAW frames. In the same configuration, the X-H2 is rated to capture 1,000+ JPEG frames, 1,000+ compressed RAW frames and 400 uncompressed RAW frames. So, if you're shooting huge umber of images at very high frame rates, then the X-H2 would definitely have the advantage. However, in most situations, weddings included, this is not an issue. I shoot action with the X-T5 and I've never had an issue. If I can't nail my scene in 119 frames, then the camera isn't the problem. So, in practical terms, my advice is to look at body style and try them both out at a store. Which of these two cameras fits and feels better and more familiar in your hands? If you love the overall feel and style of the X-T4, then I would go with the X-T5. The controls are essential the same on those two models. However, if you really like the flip-out screen on the X-T4, or if you prefer the "DSLR style" body, then you might look at the X-H2, because that's what kind of screen it has. The X-T5 has the original 3-way tilt LCD screen, which many photographers prefer for shooting stills. Here's another main difference: Since many of the settings like shutter speed, capture, focus control and ISO are not tied to dials on the X-H2, you have more options to save certain shooting parameters to a custom setting. For example, you can create a custom setting that has a specific shutter speed, aperture, ISO or AF-S/AF-C setting. On the X-T5, you can save any of the creative/AF/Shooting settings like you can on the X-H2, but not those shooting parameters like shutter speed and ISO. If that's of any concern. It may not be, but it's something to think about. Hope that helps.

    Hey Dan, I just recently upgraded from a XT-10 to an XT-2. Everything about the XT-10 seems inferior, and I always struggled with the XT-10s frustrating auto focus using the 18-55 lens. I'm wondering if there's any reason to keep it since they seem close in form and function? I've thought about putting a pancake prime on it, but even then is that better than an XT2 with a 35mm f2.0 for quick indoor shooting and street photography. Any reason to keep an XT-10 in conjunction with the XT2? What would you do?

    Thanks for your comment, and congratulations on your new X-T2. As you'll see in pat 5 of this series, kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKSq0aapm9rWe9o.html the X-T2 is where things really took off for me with the X Series cameras. As you're finding out, it's a big leap ahead in performance, speed and specs compared to the X-T10. After I moved to the X-T2, I don't remember using my X-T10 very much anymore. I actually gave mine to a friend. It does make a good backup camera, but that being said, my X-T2 never let me down, and so if you want to simplify your life, then I guess there's no real need to keep it. That's my 2 cents, anyway.

    I entered the FUji ecosystem last year, by buying a used X-T1. I was kinda surprised to see that whatever the generation, the smaller camera is always more expensive than the bigger one on the second hand market. X-T10s are more expensive than X-T1s. When I searched for an X-T2 a few weeks back, X-T20s were more expensive also, and I quickly checked, but X-T30s are basically the same price as used X-T3s I mean whaaa?

    Ronald, thanks for your comment. I think that Fujifilm does a good job supporting the older models, but they can only do so much to add new features, due to limitations of the processors on those cameras. Many of the new features require faster processing, and so in most cases, there taken the previous models as far as they can. That said, they continue to add new lens compatibility to the older models. What do you like to shoot with your X-T30?

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    Жыл бұрын

    That's a tough one. They are very similar cameras and have most of the same features and functions. The X-T10 was a more expensive camera when it came out, however, the X-T100 is a newer model, so it has a higher megapixel sensor and slightly better image quality. Regarding lenses, both the 16-50 and 18-55 are very good, and I've used both of them quite often. Overall, the 18-55 is a better quality lens and has OIS image stabilization. I have not used the X-T100, but I have used the X-T10 extensively and was always very impressed with its performance and function. Given that they're both very similar, if you have the chance to try them both out, or at least hold them and see which body style and lens you like better, that might help narrow it down. Again, since they're both very similar, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

    Anti, the 16-50 is actually a pretty good little lens. It has a versatile zoom range, and a pretty close minimum focus distance. So, even though the widest possible aperture at 50mm is f/5, it would still do well for shooting portraits.

There is one track that is poorly lit, for that one I go back to my Fuji’s, mostly with the 90mm f/2 and use a Godox AD200 off in a corner . Always have a 35, 28 and 14mm handy. Love the channel.
