Oddly enough, a couple of days after I bought the x10 I bumped into Bruce Gilden working away in Oxford Street in London. We got talking, and he tried out the x10 for a few shots. He was impressed with how small it was - even more so after I sent him the pictures.

    Dan, I just absolutely love your enthusiasm for Fujifilm and photography. I saw your name and a video recommended on a Reddit post comment and I feel like I’ve finally found a photographer I really relate to. You’ve inspired me to try out more in-camera customizations and processing, rather than throwing it on Lightroom and adjusting to get the perfect look. I just ordered your book and can’t wait to read it. Thanks!

    I am watching this in 2023. I got my X10 yesterday and i totally get your point. I’m a professional photographer working at events. So I am used to travel, work and sometimes live in pain with big lenses and cameras. The only small cameras I’ve had are analog point and shoots. The X10 is so small and produces unbelievable jpgs. I’ve dialed the x10 to make Ektachrome-like colors and it’s so much fun. Great video! Really enjoyed it!

    Hi Dan, great contents as usual. Thank you so much for sharing your journey of the X series. I really love the snow shots and one more thing i do not know how you bikers ride in this weather. This is truly oustanding . As a wedding photographer I used to be a canon shooter and carrying two bodies with various lens and my bag. In 2013 I had a really bad motorvehicle accidents and I had severe injuries in my lower back and my right shoulder. Thus it made it very painful to keep shooting in my condition and I was hating wedding photography. Then in 2014 I bought the Fuji XT1to use along with my canons. I was intrigued with how small the camera was and how light it was. It was an eye opener for me given my condition. In 2015 I bought the Fuji Xt2 with the 16-55 f2.8 and I slowly began to sell my Canon gear and bought a second body of Xt2 along with the 50-140 f2.8. In 2015 I switched completely to fuji xseries and never looked back. I rediscover the joy of Photography and feel so liberated as you mentioned.I have love Fuji since the film days and now I get to revive the film simulations like the good old days.What a joy!!! It's truly an addiction. Take care Dan.

    Such a great story, Nas, and one that seems to be a familiar tale with a lot of photographers who have switched from Canon/Nikon to Fuji and found a renewed sense of passion and creative liberation. And yes, fat tire snow bikes started here in Alaska, since we have snow on the trails for almost half the year. It’s a way of life with us, and now they’ve spread to the rest of the country/world. I’m sure you can see them down there, they even have fat tire ebikes! 😂 Anyway, thanks for the comment and take care!

    Dan, thanks for this video and looking forward to the other parts. Having listened to your enthusiasm for Fujifilm Velvia I went back into capture One and played about with various photographs using this simulation. Boy, was I impressed. With Raw you tend to get stuck into your edits and forget the powerful simulation tool. Thanks for that. XT4 will now be set more often with Velvia. Then use post to play with other Sims.

    Thanks for your comment, Pat. Yes, it’s easy to get lost in processing RAW, because that what serious photographers are supposed to do, but the way I see it with Fuji, why not take advantage of their almost 90 year history of experience with color? That’s what the film sims let you do, as opposed to endlessly sliding sliders and hoping you can get something that’s almost as good. Anyway, take care and keep having fun with your Fuji!

    I love your storytelling...a true photojournalist. I too have an X10, bought new from B&H in 2012. I was just perusing and came upon the Fujifilm X10 and bought it on a whim...for the design. My point & shoot, everyday carry was the excellent Canon Powershot S95...which I still have and use. But the X10 seduced me. It looked like a baby Leica. I love the size and controls. That lens is a work of art. Fujifilm film emulations are the kicker. I live in Manhattan and the X10 is my street camera of choice...along with the S95. Quality manual Point & Shoots are a dying breed. Get them while you can. Frankly I don't understand today's throw away tech. Spend $300 on a pair of Noise-Cancelling headphones and toss them when the battery goes. Buy a $1,000 camera and kick it to the curb when the new model arrives. On this dreary winter day in NYC, I have my Canon S95 on me and I've already shot 85 images. When I get home I'll pop the SD/microSD card into my computer LG V60 phone (4 years old with no intention of replacing) and upload the images.

    Hey there! Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you're still enjoying your X10. Yes, unfortunately, we live in a sad and often frustrating era of disposable digital technology. At least some brands & items allow for a longer lifespan, and if you're still enjoying a particular camera after 10 years, then that's a testament to both the camera design itself, and also your own dedication to not succumbing to the often irresistible pull of the next greatest thing. Me, I'm still on my iPhone X from 2017! 😀 Keep up the good work and keep having fun with your "old' cameras. I hope to make it back to NYC sometime soon. It's been over four years since I was last there.

    @@DanBaileyPhoto The X10 has a superlative piece of glass...that 28-112 f2.0-f2.8. I can print beautiful 24x36 posters. The 12 megapixel ⅔ sensor is more than I want for the camera's intended purpose. Before I bought the X10, I had the Canon 5D Mark ll. I dreaded carrying that thing around. Others have made the point that DSLR's can be intimidating for the subject. People love being part of the X10 experience. I considered buying the X100 when it came out, but I really wanted a zoom for travel and street photography. The X10 is perfect for that...and it looks so darn great. When the X20 came out, I was intrigued by the viewfinder's info overlay and some updated features. But I never pulled the trigger.

    Hi Dan, I loved this video. I own the X10 and it's larger brother, the X-S1. BOTH have been my main cameras for some years. I love both of them for different reasons. I have been thinking about moving to the X trans Mirrorless systems lately and becoming more "serious" about my photography to start to move to becoming a paid photographer. Your mindset on this has been mine as well for years. It's not what is in front of your head when you take pictures, its what is behind the camera. Your image of the wild flowers that has been blown up to 4x6 ft is PROOF that you don't need the biggest, baddest camera. I am going to continue to use my little point and shoot/bridge cameras and see what I can get from them for paid jobs. I am starting to build my portfolio and start my journey to paid photography! At any rate, the X-T10 is a great little camera, mine saw very heavy use for a few years, and I love how small and light it is, and yet so capable. When Fuji launched the X-T10, they actually gave it a faster, more advanced autofocus system than the Flagship X-T1 had at the time, although they later updated the X-T1 to match with a firmware update. And yes, the new 70-300 is such an amazing lens, and made even more powerful with the teleconverters and the little MCEX extension tubes! Have tons of fun with your little Fuji and keep in touch!

My other cameras: Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II (love the 4/3), Canon EOS M100 (mainly for monochrome), Sony A5000 (which I bought for 30 Euros, it performs excellent with the light we have near the Wadden Sea) and the Lumix TZ80 which is always in my pocket, where ever I go. A Polaroid XS70 (amongst a few other Polaroids) and a Lubitel 2. I am not a professional photographer but it is a very passionat hobby! :-) I retire next year and finally will have time to do much more with my camera's. Another reason why I bought the amazing X10 of which I know it will suit my desire for more real photos than the glamorous high MP's DSLR's.

    Dan, like you, I too got my start with Fuji digital camera through the X-10. It was a blast to use and I still have it to this day. My first exposure to Fuji cameras, was the ST 701 DSLR film camera back in 1971, and I loved it as well. I’ve been through NIkons, Pentax, Canon and then into mirrorless with Panasonic’s Lumix series interchangeable lens cameras, but upon first purchasing the X100 camera, I was totally hooked on the rangefinder style, it’s simplicity and its functionality. My first Fujifilm camera was a X-E1. I didn't have a budget for lenses, so I only had the lens I got with it, an industar 53mm 2.8 on an m39 adapter. shot for the first few months only on that lens and loved every day of it. I attended a Fujifilm photography class you guest hosted in Glazer's camera Seattle that year. I later on 'upgraded' through a series of fujifilm cameras and lenses. Recently went through a dull patch in life where creativity was in the dumps. Sold off most gear - Xt4, xt3, all my zoom lenses, bigger primes etc and picked up a X-e4. Together with the 16 2.8, 27 2.8 and a few adapted lenses, looking forward to a more creative time ahead.

    Dear Dan, Thanks for the interesting story of you journey with Fujifilm X Series cameras. You asked for our own stories, so here is mine. In the 1980s my wife and I each had an Olympus OM10, she shot slides, I shot print film. Later when we switched to digital we had a number of small bridge cameras and in 2006 we bought a Nikon D40. When we went on holiday to Spain we used 2 bridge cameras and the D40 in the UK. But we began to be dissatisfied with the quality of the indoor photographs when we went on holiday, we needed better low light performance. My research led me to believe that a larger sensor was needed, and thought of either micro four thirds or APS-C, and it was narrowed down to an Olympus Pen or a Fuji X-series camera. Then our local camera shop had a sale and they were offering a Fuji X-A2 with the XC 16-50mm zoom lens for less than 300 UK pounds, so I bought it, the date was October 2016. I was delighted with the camera and the quality of the pictures, all the things about the Fuji system were true, the film simulations etc. However I felt I really needed a viewfinder, many of the Fuji cameras cost more than I was willing to pay, but then I discovered the refurbished products offered by Fujifilm, and I bought the X-E2S, this was April 2018, I also got the XC 50-230mm zoom and the XF 27mm prime. The cameras and the lenses were all fantastic. In January 2020, with the pandemic and looking for something to do, I bought an XT20 and the 18-55mm zoom in order to make some higher quality videos. Again the camera and lens were excellent, though I prefer the XC 16-50 mm zoom over the 18-55mm because it is so much lighter in weight. I have all three Fuji bodies still, I will not sell any of them, and all the lenses that I mentioned. I also use the Olympus lenses from the OM10s and get good results from them, my favourite being a f1.8 50mm Zuiko lens. For the future I might buy an XE-4, I do prefer the rangefinder style of the XE-2S over the pentaprism style of the XT-20. Having enjoyed your "journey" I shall make a start on watching some of your other videos. Thanks again.

I have no background in using cameras other that moments of shooting using smartphones and I don’t know what to pick! I am to use it for a photography class, just a beginner uni subject and there is no specified specs told.. I like the look and simplicity(in) of x10 but at the same time feel the x-t2 will be much useful though as a beginner I’m afraid it’ll take th fun and make the start of my photography too… over..¿ like digitalized- i mean, like tweak to assumed perfection(you know like artificial?) because of too much freedom on settings.. no that it is that bad but.. I paint for fun and end up studyingnit in school, learned techniques etc. with every corner of my artwork inspected, i lost interest on it as a “joyful” thing to do and only do it now only when necessary… something like that? So x10 it is…? Any other recommendations?

    @@runi2453 Hello! These are both great cameras. Many people would choose the X-T2 because of its slightly advanced specs and weather sealing. I, on the other hand, would consider seriously the X-T10 ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXyByrxveLDAp84.html ). I always recommend people to get a smaller camera because it makes a huge difference when carrying the camera with you. I keep preaching the same message Dan. I personally started shooting film in 1972 with Nikromat EL and a micro Nikor 50mm lens. Developed my own everything and learned a lot. Fast forward to 2017 and I was tired of the weight and size of the DSLR. I was planning a trip to Switzerland and wanted to keep a photo journal of the trip a purchased the tiny Sony X100 IV. The little camera went everywhere with me and it was liberating not being burdened with bulk and weight anymore. It took very good pictures but was a capable camera with a 28-70 zoom. I wanted to use interchangeable lenses and discovered the Fuji X Series cameras. WOW. I purchased the XS 10 and it is as close to a pocket camera with interchangeable lenses that one can get. I love the Film simulations including the new simulations too. For me the XS 10 is all I need to enjoy my trips and have the camera easily accessible. I found going smaller LIBERATING. I took mine to a 3 week trip to Europe and the on & off switch broke on the first day of my vacation. Smartly I carried a backup, an all weather Nikon w 100 and it did a good job. I had mixed feelings about the lens "turn-on" function - I liked the style and feel of that control, and I never had any issues with it, but the design was such that I couldn't hold and turn the camera on with one hand. I purchased the X100 when it was released in the spring of 2011 to use as a back up to my Canon DSLR system. I was looking for a high quality small, light camera for biking. In June of 2011, we did a 5 day cycling tour of Prince Edward Island. I took my Canon 7D with an 18-135 travel zoom and my X100 and shot with both for the trip. When I reviewed the photos from the trip, I found that I preferred the images from the X100. I sold all my Canon equipment and pre-ordered the X Pro 1 and 3 lenses when introduced by Fuji in early 2012. I used the system for a hiking trip to Iceland in June 2012 and was completely satisfied with the images I got from my Fuji equipment. Since 2012, I have owned several Fuji cameras and lenses and currently own and use an XT 3 with the 55-200 and 16-80 zooms, an X Pro which I use with the 16, 23, 35 and 90 Fujicron primes and X100V. As an avid hiker and cyclist, I am sold on the carry-ability of the Fuji system which in my opinion produces wonderful JPegs. I also feel that the Fuji cameras provide a great shooting experience.

    I started out with Nikon, lugging around a D700 with a battery grip at events which was taking a toll on me. When I decided to take the plunge into mirrorless, I looked at the Fuji line but was initially intimidated with the dials and layout. I opted for Olympus but was not always content with its low light performance but loved it for its built and resistance. I needed something that was a couple of stops cleaner so I decided to try out the Fuji Xe3 and was hooked. I love this little camera. I recently acquired the Xpro 2 because I wanted something that could withstand the elements and to give the OVF a try. I haven’t abandoned Olympus because of the size and weight factor of their lenses not to mention the amazing rendering. Now that the Om1 is here these two systems will live, side by side and in harmony in my camera bag for years to come.

    That is a great story Dan. I used to really be into photography and used to lug around a huge bag full of gear whenever my wife and I went anywhere. My back really paid the price. I went from Minolta X300, X500, X700, XD2, and CLE, to a Pentax SF2, then went digital with an Olympus E-10, adding a *ist D when they came out. Then later I switched systems again and went to a Panasonic GH2 (which I still have). I was very tempted to get the X20 as it reminded me of the Minolta CLE. But I didn’t have the money at the time. Eventually I moved away from relying on time, location and weather to be creative and moved over to making music and animations which I can do anytime no matter the weather etc. I have to be creative and I was finding photography was just not satisfying that itch anymore. Now I hardly ever take photos and use either my phone or OSMO Pocket for everything. I no longer feel ruled by a huge camera bag, so I totally know what you mean about feeling liberated.

  • @ccjmusic

    @ccjmusic

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DanBaileyPhoto Hey Dan… I love the OSMO Pocket. I have the first gen version, and it got better in the second gen. It is a fixed lens so you have to think in terms of being limited by that. I would say though that having the gimbal really shows how much sharpness you normally lose when handholding a camera. It shoots in Raw as well as jpg so you can get great images from it. I really like the video quality from it too. The camera can also be connected via WiFi to a phone with an attachment, to allow remote shooting with the live image on your phone. It can also use a wired connection to do the same via USB. I’d say the weakest part of it is the sound recording as it is mono only and adding an external mic is spotty as the USB to 3.5mm DAC isn’t the most reliable and is very picky about the mic connected to it. The second gen may have some of the sound issues fixed. If I could feed in a stereo signal via my iRig Stream it would be perfect for recording myself playing guitar. If you ever get a chance to try one out you should. It won’t out shoot any of your other gear, but having that gimbal it a great addition to something that will fit in your pocket.

    thank you for sharing your experience! I'm a new fuji guy, just got myself an X-T3 last month (I've been using it with a vintage Helios Soviet 58mm lens and the XC 16-50), but I live in Brazil, where criminality is a real problem depending on where you're at and at what time of day. Even though my camera has insurance that covers theft I still noticed that I hesitate a lot to take my camera with me, especially when I'm also going to drink and have fun (I actually had a little Canon EOS M before and it got stolen), I see my X-T3 as more of a work tool than anything, so I decided to look at digicams, I wanted a cheap old point and shoot camera, with all the imperfections that came with it, merely so that I could always have a camera with me and avoid getting the feeling that I missed a shot because I didnt have my camera with me. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Fuji had one that was not only great but was also cheap, AND that there's someone selling one right next to me even though Fuji isn't even popular here and the camera must've originally costed a fortune here, I was still in doubt of whether I was going to buy it or not, but thanks to you I'm definetely going to buy it as soon as I come home from the trip I'm making to my hometown of Rio de Janeiro. Cheers from Brazil mate!

    oh, and I'm also curious, have you thought about what's the next stop on your Fuji journey? Have you been swayed by the XH line with the X-H2S or the yet to release XH2? or will you wait for the X-T5? I of course have no plan of upgrading anytime soon, I barely touched my X-T3 and I already feel it's overkill for me, but if the X-T5 comes with the great video features of the X-H2S but maintain the X series retro manual design? then they'll surely get me hooked

I've never been especially attracted to the X-H series cameras, but I do recognize their place in the Fuji line, and I'm certainly intrigued by the the capabilities of the new X-H2s, since I do shoot fast action, and am shooting more video lately. That said, I love the styling of the X-T series camera, so I think that I'll be very pleased when the release the X-T5, whenever that ends up being. Sold all my micro four thirds gear after the trip. I must say I tried Pentax after the x10. The sensor size ego trip and the reputation for durability I guess, but I couldn't replicate the colors of my fuji so it wasn't long before it went to Ebay. Hi Don, thanks for your comment. I agree, it would be nice to see that small X line come back. They were such great cameras, but I think they were hard to market to the larger public. Some people loved them, but I think that for many fickle users, they weren't small enough, and went for the Sony RX100, or they weren't high enough quality and so they went for bigger camera. However, for a lot of people, they were the gateway drug into the Fuji system.

A bit skeptical about buying because the lenses are fixed(actually not recommended by the advisors- i think… the other student said? Wasn’t able to attend first class 🤷🏻‍♀️ ) but of all the videos I watched here about it, I notice the person using the camera matters more in terms of “specs” than the camera itself… so. Got it! I’ll study well! But btw, I still don’t really understand the big difference of ccd and cmos cams but because of the colors, I really love the way photos turned out on ccd cameras (old).. dunno about new ones 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I hope I can tune the x10 to remake as such. Funny, I LOVE used fixed lenses!! I've always preferred fixed lenses in the wide to middle to short telephoto range, and only use zooms in the longer telephoto range, like the 50-140, and 70-300, etc... As I said in this video, it was my first mirrorless camera, and I loved it I had a wonderful time with it. That's what matters. Regarding sensors, the new image capture technology allows for incredible image clarity and color reproduction, but a lot of that is in the software of the camera. The Fujifilm cameras in particular do an amazing job in this regard, because they have applied their 90+ year legacy with film and color to the cameras with the film simulations. In fact, that's the exact thing that brought me back to Fuji in the first place and fall in love with the X10 - the awesome colors. Between the different film looks and the other in-cameras controls, like highlight and shadow tone, you should be able to get results with your X10. What kind of subject do you like to shoot?

However the size difference is due mostly to the lack of a pentaprism on mirrorless cameras.

They can’t out either the D800 and left us out in the cold, because that wasn’t it. But yes, in my opinion, that was Nikon’s best DSLR for many years. What do you use now, Joshua?

    Jan, I remember when they had the orb problem with the X10. Its was a limited issue, and it only happened when shooting specular highlights, which are difficult for the sensor to render anyway. At any rate, Fujifilm did respond and fix the problem with a modified sensor a few months after the camera was initially released. So awesome that you have a seemingly brand new X10, it's still a really fun and capable camera! I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun with it, and yes, definitely try out the Velvia film sim. Hi Dan Great videos, blown away with your craft. I owned a X10 but got it stolen from Croatia. The insurance payout enabled me to replace the X10 with a X20 and Have loved it ever since. I have always wanted to have one of my images printed but wondered if X20 was capable of delivering a professional images. Seeing your work I can see it is not about the camera its about the user experience and ability. I did however move to a XPro 1 thinking this would give me a better chance to turn out something of professional quality. Love my 2 Fuji's and hope that with practise I can finally print work I will be happy to frame, thats something I can do having my own picture frame business. Question do you use the same SD card in in all of you Fuji's, or do you take heed to the write speeds of each camera?

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    Жыл бұрын

    Michael, thanks for your comment and your feedback! I'm glad to hear that you're having so much fun with your Fuji cameras! To answer your question: Yes, I generally use the same SD cards in all my cameras. I do have a mix of different cards with different write speeds, but I've always preferred the SanDisk Extreme Pro cards. UHS-II cards will give you the fastest performance, which is critical when shooting large bursts, like when you're shooting action, capturing lots of RAW files, or when filming video, although I've gotten great performance with the regular UHS-I 95 MB/s cards. Keep in mind, if you're not shooting high frame rates of video, then you don't necessary need an ultra fast card. Hope that answers your question!

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    Maybe not wasted, but you could certainly get away with much slower cards in the X20 and save some money. I used to use SanDisk Ultra 30MP/s cards in my earlier model Fujis. They worked just fine.

    Bill, I also had the X20, and I agree, those were very special and unique cameras, and it's too bad that they didn't continue with that series. It's a tough market, though, and everyone wanted bigger sensors. The Sony RX100 had that, but it didn't have the magic that those first little Fujis had.
