The Fujifilm XT5 is here! I've had it since the release date and have shot professionally with it every day since.. It's a game-changer for Fujifilm shooters for sure! but there are a few things people are talking about! I pre-ordered the new Fujifilm XT5 from Carmarthen cameras, as soon as it was announced! I was thrilled to get the XT3 style screen and body back but with the improvements like battery and focusing from the Fujifilm XT4.
So far I adore using the camera, tho there are some things you need to know
Thanks for watching, I hope you found this video useful

The format card shortcut is still there, but it's a little different. You don't need to hold down the delete button for three seconds and then hit the rear command dial button. You need to hit and hold the delete button then immediately hit and hold the rear command dial button TOGETHER for a few seconds and then the format option will pop up.

Nice video. From watching other videos on the XT5, it is my understanding that in comparison with the XT3, the dynamic range is not much better and the noise at high ISO ranges is a bit worse.

There will be a different perspective between someone such as yourself, a professional photographer, and a hobbyist like me. I love the size and ergonomics of the X-T5. I wanted its 'smallness' for travel and street/urban landscapes and I wanted that 40MP! I sold all my Canon gear to move back to Fuji (I owned...have bought again an X-T1. I have also owned the X-T2&3 in the past). Thus I was in a position to buy both the X-T5 and the month earlier... an X-H2. So I have the best of both worlds. The X-H2 for my main landscape photography and the X-T5 for everything else. The bigger lenses do balance better on the X-H2 with that superior handling. The X-T5, I would say (personally) is better suited to primes. I think that may have been Fuji's intention here in terms of their use case.

A camera being lighter and smaller is something many youtube reviewers don't even mention, I guess that's because they are usually professionals or using it for specific photography. To me it's the most important aspect of a camera, heck I love budget cameras that have many luxury features scrapped so it's affordable. Luxury features are only used by professionals, if even that. The recent Canon R8 fits perfectly in this category and isn't recommended enough because most just focus on video quality or battery life. I wished they made cameras without video features for example so they could become even less expensive for people like me who never use the button to switch to video ;)

The modest size and inconspicuous vintage aesthetic of the X-T5 are real winners for me, especially when travelling. No average person would think it was an expensive powerhouse of a camera, especially with a pancake lens on it. A wolf in sheep's clothing.

for me, smaller grip really helps making it "portable", in a way. I have my xt3 setup with a pancake lens, it would fit in most of my casual pants' pocket (not jeans or formal pants tho), literally i can tuck it in most narrow spaces / pockets.

For the compressed files, the easiest way to spot a difference, is to push each file to the breaking point. For example, do a single raw capture in a high contrast scene with strong highlights and deep shadows, then tonemap it like crazy (ignore that such tone mapping will ruin the image anyway), but when done, you will see see the artifacts from the compression. While the compression is unnoticeable in most situations, there may come a time when you need to raise a deep shadow by 5+ stops and at that point the compression issues will be visible.

Thanks for the honest review. I'm also a wedding shooter who has used his X-T2's for the better part of 5 seasons and/or 200 weddings at about 2K shots per camera per event (I have 3 X-T2's). All to say, I'm familiar with that camera, its strengths, and its shortcomings. What I love about the Fujifilm system is the colour, the low noise (relative to my old Canon 5DIII) and size (though I also have big hands so I used the OEM grip). It was shooting an event last night in very very low light (missing focus in ISO 12800 conditions 1/30th @ 1.4) that drew me to youtube this morning to explore the possibility of an upgrade. I'm pleased to understand that the X-T5 is simple to use - as expected - but I was really hoping that the auto-focus would be much further along than where it seems to be...That's really the only thing I need in a camera - reliable AF. Like you, I find the 40MP is excessive but am encouraged by the results at glance from your comparison, compressed vs lossless. Not sure why Fujifilm doesn't do something like Canon did with the RAW and sRAW option, but I digress... I'll still probably upgrade to the 5, despite its shortcomings (and having to change up my batteries - how's the battery life, btw?).

Out of all the reviews I’ve seen so far for this camera I think yours is the most informative for Fuji shooters as it explains the experience instead of the features. I cover events on a semi-regular basis and I've found the X-T5 makes a massive difference, especially in regards to eye detect. I was using the X-T3 & X-E4 previously. Just one less thing to worry about! Just bought the MHG for the extortionate £129, but it is worth it. Love the increased battery life and overall handling. I have noticed the resolution issue with 10-24, and also relatively poor ISO performance of the new sensor compared to the X-Trans IV. I have found myself reaching for the X-E4 more often in low light. Overall though I absolutely love my X-T5. The 40mp sensor works amazingly well with the 90 f2 and surprisingly well with the new Sigma 18-50 f2.8. The Sigma lens is now one of the sharpest I own!

I have big hands as well and got both SmallRig grips. The Black one has a removable and extendable L bracket and a nice dark wood grip. The Silver one has no L bracket but is much lighter and is styled to blend into the silver body. The rubber grip on it has the same texture as the body. Both have larger grips that blend nicely with the existing one. I like having the grip for shooting one handed.

I've been using mine for all of this year so far - and the auto eye focus, in very low light, is actually proving pretty darn reliable. Having to shoot action, stage at 1/250 and iso 12800 and higher. The x-t3 is spotty at this, but the improvements in the X-t5 are great. A little better would not be worth the loss of the fun and convenience of using the Fuji.

  • @SummersSnaps

Great review Gareth. Interesting to hear about the Uncompressed RAW vs Compressed RAW, please revisit this when you can. I too shoot weddings and events with Fuji, the lack of a better shooting experience with the XT5's EVF from my XT4's EVF is a total deal breaker for me. I think Fuji have went a bit too extreme on this concept of 'tiers' and that the XH line is 'flagship' and the XT 'midlevel' etc. How about you stuff the classifications and just make good cameras, who cares what 'tier' a camera falls under? Just buy the right camera for suits your needs and interfacing style. Appreciate the nonbs review. I will likely struggle through with my event work for now on my XT4 and will have a wait to see what the Xpro4 will be like and possibly skip this entire generation before contemplating an upgrade. I'm not fully sold on the 40mp being worthwhile nor convinced the AF is that much improved that it would ease a significant proportion of my anxiety (I'll likely spam moments as much as I currently do anyway on the XT4). Hopefully 2024 we'll get some very confident AF finally that will be more than enough for shooters like us.

I went to B&H Photo in New York this weekend to compare an X-H2 vs X-T5. Specks are similar on the photography side which I'm mostly interested in. I’m traveling with my cameras, so I like them to be as light as possible. Thus, I did have almost decided on an X-T5. I don’t mind the PASM style button on the X-H2, although I prefer the standard Fuji dials. It was only after I looked into the Viewfinder, I thought there might be something wrong with the X-T5. The view was smaller and significantly dimmer than that of the X-H2. It is like comparing your old 48-inch edge lit LED TV with a 75-inch OLED TV, the difference was massive. After seeing this difference, I would think about it every time if I decided to buy the X-T5, wondering how this would look in the X-H2. So, my advice to people deciding on the X-T5, do not under any circumstances look into an X-H2 view finder, it will ruin your day. If you’ve never seen it, you’ll be fine, because the X-T5 is an excellent camera.

I fully agree with your estimation of the 10-24 and the Viltrox 13mm. I bought the 10-24mm, used it for a couple days and returned it for the reason you stated. Image quality is not in line with, say, the 56mm, which is stellar. So I bought the Viltrox 13mm and am very happy with both the build and image quality, which stand up to the best of Fuji lenses. I also have the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 ver. II which is also superb. I miss the absence of the aperture ring, but can live with the huge savings. No point putting a second rate lens on a first rate body unless you're going after a special effect.

Like and agree with all you say and how you say it. Subscribed. Shot with the 10-24 on my XT-5 on a tripod for the first time yesterday, and the corners/edge details were indeed a little bit mushy. Resolution on my 16-55, 90, and 50-140 lenses is outstanding. Coming from an X-T3, the whole shooting experience is far snappier and more trustworthy (with the same reservations you have re autofocus).

Just discovered your channel tonight. Thanks for the tip on considering lossless raw files. I just sold my x-pro2 and went back to the XT series with the XT5. My first fuji in 2015 was the XT1. My wife got the XT4 and it had me wanting to upgrade once I used it for a bit.. I only shoot with primes, never will use for video, and I shoot mostly concerts from the crowd, street or landscapes. I prefer the smaller design and ergonomics for this and for when I travel. I did buy the MHG from fuji and think it’s worth it. I added the new 33mm 1.4 LM and 18mm 1.4 LM to my kit. Previous only used the classic 23 and 35 f/2 for everything. Will get the new 56 WR next.

I'm a hobbyist, but also *loved* the 10-24 (my first Fuji zoom). And I thought I'd never sell it until I picked up the Viltrox 13mm. It's definitely sharper than the Fuji, but the max aperture and minimum focus distance is what really put it over the top with me.. I found it opened up new areas of creativity, which made selling the zoom a fairly pain-free decision (well either that, or I'm still in denial ;-)

As an XT-4 Owner I am skipping the XT-5. Apart from the XT-2/3 users this camera does not bring anywhere near enough to warrant spending nearly 2k on camera where it only offers one small upgrade which is the sensor. Combined with the issues such as lack of options in the grip, reduction in size, and softness issues in the Fuji lenses when used with this camera it just isn't a viable upgrade for XT-4 owners. As a manufacturer they have failed the people that perhaps jumped to Fuji when the XT-4 was released. If they do anything remotely similar next time with their new models I will be selling all of my Fuji gear and probably jumping back to Canon. Leapfrogging back to designs of the past (XT-3 styling, size and screen) and pushing a sensor which doesn't work well with current, still selling lenses demonstrates a level of erratic and desperate moves from a company which is clearly struggling to stay relevant. While I love my XT-4 I refuse to continue to invest in a system which is now clearly showing cracks and while other camera manufacturers have had these same issues (Canon also had this issue when they started to rapidly increase the MP) it appears that Fuji has not learned from them and looks to repeat the same mistakes.

Maybe it’s because my first and last digital camera before I got the X-T3 in fall 2020 was a Samsung NX-11 I find the Fuji’s autofocus quite OK. Maybe not for sport, but sufficient for street photography. And people ARE moving. And since you mentioned the BlueTooth connectivity: I own an iPhone Xs and I like to use the app as a remote control with my X-T3. (And for firmware updates.) The only really annoyingly laggy feature is live view which uses WiFi connection. It’s a guessing game especially with the autofocus on (which I learned to disable after I set the focus point in advance) but the pure remote control feature, even with locked trigger for long time exposure, works every time.

Absolutely agree on the EVF. I want the analog experience with the top dials but there's no reason I should sacrifice on features other than Fuji wanting to artificially separate the X-T5 from the X-H2 as the "flagship" photo camera. Same goes for the lack of a battery grip. How does that make sense? They would sell like hotcakes on this camera but it's just another artificial barrier. If they had given us the good EVF and battery grip, this would have been the perfect camera for me. The AF isn't anywhere near as good as my R5 and other cameras but I'm not really concerned with that for the kind of photography I would use the X-T5 for. Like you said, I was gutted over these two things as well.

I really enjoyed this video! I love my X-T5. Came from an XS-10, so pretty much everything is an upgrade - thought the viewfinder was great. :) My two (very minor) irritations are accidentally hitting the front button (which I've set to face detection). I also have had a problem accidentally changing the drive mode when using the ISO dial - but as I type this, I realise that's already happening a lot less. Muscle memory kicking in, I guess!

I found my 10-24f4 v1 lens didn't resolve well even on my 16, 24 and 26mp fuji cameras even at f8 in the corners. Maybe I am too critical or maybe my lens is a big weak. The 8-16 is a major upgrade in corner resolution if I could justify buying one and you can get lens mount clip in lens filters for it from kolari if you need a ND filter. I have the fuji 14/2.8 and it is a cracking good lens. It might not be wide enough for interior/real estate photography but it is my go to landscape lens now. I have wanted to get the viltrox 13mm because it is that good. But so far I am happy with my 14mm it is sharp even wide open. Thanks for sharing your videos and your review of the xt5. There was a lot of info that most people gloss over and I love that you shared some comparison raw files! Please keep up the great work and I look orward to your next video.

Get hold of a Viltrox 13 mm 1.4 and try it. I have tried it on my XH2. It has fast AF and I was blown away by the resolution in a broad landscape situation so in a small area it would be even better. I sold my wide angle zoom lens. If I need to go wider I have got a Laowa 9 mm Zero D (manual) but my most used lens is the16-55. I pondered over whether to get the XH2 or wait for the XT5 but are happy with the camera. I shoot wildlife and need to change the settings very quickly for a fast moving bird. On the XH2 you can assign a button to go immediately to C1 settings I wonder if you can do that on the XT5?

Had the same issue with the model I picked up. The screen was loose and compared to my XT-4 it felt really ..."cheaply" built. Very plasticy in a way? No ruppersealing on the cardslot/port doors. I prefer the ones on the XT4. The bottom plate & body overall (iam sure it holds up just fine) felt...toy a like. I would´ve really loved to switch - just because of the screen for my needs but I ended up not going with the XT5 just because of the "feel" at this price point especially

Thanks so much mate. Nice of you. In honesty I wouldn’t recommend FUJIFILM for sport. The afc still isn’t up to scratch professionally. It’s much better than it was but no where near Sony and canon. Also look at the lens ecosystem and make sure the king lenses are up to the job for you. The f2 is amazing but expensive

Interesting stuff Gareth. I have the X-H2 now and like you with the X-T5 EVF, there is really only one thing I dislike and that is the flip screen. I had the H1 and loved the screen which you now have on the T5. Why on earth do flippin Fuji as you describe them keep swapping specs over between the different series of cameras? I’m disappointed that the 10-24 is not so good, I noticed that it was not on the list of recommended lenses for the H2. I watched Ian Worth’s review of the 13mm Viltrox and he was impressed with it bar the fact it’s not weather sealed. Keep up the good work and honest reviews. 👍

Samyang 12mm. Gareth, try that if you haven’t done that yet. I don’t have my XT-5 yet (I am definitely getting it) but from the experience I have with the Samyang I think it will have good resolution for the new sensor.

Hi Gareth - Thanks for the timely video. I shoot a lot of theatrical performances and thrilled with the larger files (for cropping potential), but was a little concerned about your comment on higher isos. I'd be grateful of your feedback on a couple of questions. I generally shoot in dark theatres at 3,200 or 6,400. Are the files worse than X-T3? Also I have the 10-24mm for landscapes - are the images taken with that lens soft? Thanks for any feedback. KR, Keith

I have used Fujis since the days of the S5 Pro and the X series from the X-T1, 2, 3 and now 4. I still have the X-T2 for backup. I have noticed that the X-T2 has lower noise at high ISO than the X-T4 and that's just a difference of 2Mp in resolution. As a result, although I would like the larger files for cropping potential, I too am concerned about the high ISO performance with a 40Mp sensor. I too often use high ISO up to 6400 in dimly lit wedding venues. I always prefer using natural light to using strobes, as it's less intrusive and I much prefer the look of natural light.

On the EVF issue, my sense is that the evf specs tell us only a portion of what the viewing experience will be like. Also important, but not talked about because its hard to quantify, is the quality of the glass lens pieces over the evf screen, IMHO. For example, if you compare Nikon z cameras’ EVFs, they seem markedly better then say another brand’s equally spec’d EVF.

Do you have to use the camera in 40 mp mode? Can you change to like 20 mp mode or is it just always full time 40 mp? I thought I saw someone selecting the size of the photos in the menu system . What happens to actual camera when these modes are changed does it still use the entire sensor or does it kinda crop it somehow? I was debating on buying a full frame camera and people are saying these newer crop sensor cameras are just as good and full frame is really kinda not needed anymore these days is this true?

IS, ergonomics, an all round improvement from the 3 for photographers. Many small improvements = Bang for buck for 3 users. Sony, Canon & Nikon users would need to spend a lot on bodies and lenses for not a lot more. IMHO

I think that X-H2 is a better camera for professional work, while X-T5 works better for enthusiast photographers by being lighter, more portable and having a vintage vibe to it. That being said it is X-T5 that should have had a flipping screen for selfies opportunities while X-H2 should have had the tilt screen for more precise and quick photo and video handling. Imo Fuji got it all wrong with the screens on these cameras.
