I'm with you, Norman. That's one of the #1 things I love about the Fujifilm cameras. I spent enough time at my computer as it is, I don't want to spend tons of additional time editing and processing my images in order for them to look good. Plus, I love the challenge and satisfaction of trying to get it right in the camera. My goal in life is to walk away from the scene with an image I love, not walk away with an image I have to go process later. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?

@@DanBaileyPhoto I bought my wife the x-t10 recently and paired it with the XC 15-45mm and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the images that pair produces SOOC. We recently went on a trip to Maui and she and I captured some great landscapes on that thing as well as candid action shots. I mainly shot my Sony a6400. Don't get me wrong, I like how technically sound the Sony is, but I tend to spend more time editing the raw images on that, while typically the Fuji just spits out incredible looking jpegs.

Norman, those XC15-45 lenses are real sleepers in the line. They offer surprisingly good performance at a great price, and they're so lightweight! And I'm with you, I'd rather spend time shooting photos and getting great looking images right out of the camera instead of spending time processing all my RAW photos, even if they offer slightly better resolution blah blah blah. In the end, if you get great looking images, no one cares how many megapixel you have or what camera you used.

Another great episode and thanks for the mention, Dan :) My son also switched from Nikon to Fuji after trying my X-T1. He now shoots with an X-T2 and the sensor and processor of the X-T2 are amazing. The SOOC images from that camera are spectacular. After trying his X-T2, I ordered an X-E3 (same sensor in a smaller and lighter body). As I get older, light and small has become very important re: my camera gear. My X-E3 is my primary camera body now. Keep up the great work!

Hello Dan. You mentioned lenses from Fuji. At this point in time, 2024, I own 3 Fuji lenses with my old XT1. The 35 mm, f. 1;4 - The 60 mm, f.2,4 - The 18-55 kit Zoom which is actually very lovely. And I also bought a Meike 25 mm, f. 1;8 Manuel lens. A some point in the future I’ll probably go for an XT5 ❤❤

That's a very good lens kit. I have the 35 f/2 and 18-55. And if you like the X-T1, then I think you'd really like the X-T5. The X-T1 was, and still is a fantastic camera, but with the X-T2 on, they made some slight, but fundamental changes that make for better performance and usability, and have added a host of new creative features. I LOVED shooting with the X-T1, and to me, the X-T5 has all that original mojo, but with much better performance.

The great thing about the XT2 is, that is so underrated. In my opinion it is the best value Fujifilm camera. In Germany you can buy one used for about 400€. I cannot name you another camera that gives you so many features. In the photography departure it is still very much up to date and I don’t miss anything. Unfortunately only some FilmSimulations are missing due to technical reasons.

Hey Ben, I agree. The X-T2 was such a powerhouse, and it still is very capable, so yes, it still holds its value. In terms of image quality and performance, the upgrade from the X-T1 to the X-T2 was much bigger than the 2 to the X-T3 and 4. Aside from two new film sims and a couple of other features, the X-T2 continues to be a very impressive model. What do you like to shoot with yours?

I've been enjoying your "Journey" series, and this one hit home, as it was the X-T2 that pulled me into the Fuji camp. I was contentedly using my 3rd Nikon DSLR, a D750, for both client work and nature photography, when I received notice that my name had been drawn in a gear-giveaway I'd totally forgotten about. I almost ignored the notice, chalking it up to spam, but fortunately I looked into it, and soon had a pile of great gear on my doorstep, including an X-T2/18-55mm combo. It didn't take long to fall in love with the size and weight, the ergonomics and the performance. As I began to work it into my professional gig workflow, I found that my clients couldn't care less about whether I was shooting full frame or APS-C, and soon I found myself filling out the glass inventory, etc., and my D750 began to collect dust. Fast-forward to the present, and I have retired, for the 3rd time, gone totally Fuji, adding an X-T30 to replace an Olympus I'd used as a small pocketable camera, and I couldn't be happier, shooting now for just the fun of it, and for serving others. On top of the film simulations were the great creative modes. Instead of "I'll deal with it in post" I started thinking more about creating in-camera. It felt more akin to shooting transparencies of old with Velvia or Acros film. Forcing myself to really consider how my exposure was going to influence the jpeg pushed me back into a more creative zone in the field. I wanted to get each jpeg perfect. Where would I lose highlights, where would the darks be too dark? The wonderful advantage of being able to change these modes and get these wonderful "film" effects from shot to shot just made it so much more fun! Sure, you can shoot RAW, or RAW+JPEG, and change your film mode after that fact, but I really loved the challenge of trying to get it perfect "in the moment." The jpeg quality is so awesome. I channeled my old way of looking at things when I was shooting 4x5 transparencies and really couldn't waste an expensive sheet of film. All that being said, of course, I still shoot RAW, too. Sometimes I see a scene and I think, man, i can't wait to get that into Lightroom and Photoshop and just play with it. I chose not to replace it with the X-T3 or X-T4, but depending on how the X-H2 turns out (hopefully it isn't delayed past fall), that may be the one I decide to add, but I won't be getting rid of my X-T2. Thanks again, Dan for sharing your X adventure. It's been very entertaining.

Hey Ryan, thanks for your comment! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the creative libration that's offered from this style of shooting. I'm a huge fan of not deferring your creativity until later, and instead exercising it in the moment, when you're immersed in the sensory experience of the moment. And when you combine the slight limitations that JPEG inherently offers over shooting RAW and processing everything to perfection later, you gain an entirely different approach that can actually lead to a greater sense of creative exploration and satisfaction. It will be interesting to see what Fuji comes up with this summer, but until then, keep having fun with your X-T2! What are you shooting with it these days?

Even though it's not my preferred body style, I can see why some people are so enamored with those models. Fun Austria story, for our May 2013 Europe bike trip, we had actually planned to cycle over the Timmelsjoch pass, but right before the trip, found out that it was still closed. We had to change our route, and I found the Via Claudia Augusta Route, which went around and eventually linked up with the Timmelsjoch route at Merino, Italy. After lugging around the D810 through Thailand, I realized of how incredibly dumb that decision was. I came home and immediately sold the Nikon and rebought the XT2 and never looked back. Next to the ergonomics and design, the Filmsimulations really make a difference. Whenever I’m bored I try a new setting, which gets me excited and take pictures again. I still shoot RAW but mostly use the JPGs, hack I shot my honeymoon all in JPG and never had more fun on a trip taking pictures. @Yuji One thing that I would love to do in camera, would be a way to control shadow and highlight colors ;)

Thanks for another intersting one! If I'm not mistaken, the X-T2 is the last one to be made in Japan, which I believe is also something that makes it one of Fuji's finest camera to this day. Interestingly, a lot of people also swear by its processor and color rendition, and claim that it's possibly the one that handles noise better than any of the other generations, so it's vastly used for astrophotography. I'd be interested to know, what are your thoughs and experience with this?

John, I think you're right about the X-T2/Japan. The X-T2 will always have a very special place in my heart. Many of my all time favorite photos were shot with that model. I don't know if I'd say it has better color rendition and noise control, but it certainly produces amazing colors and a wonderful look when you crank the ISO dial up. Each generation of sensor and processor improves with color accuracy and noise reduction, but as with film, and other types of art, perfection doesn't necessarily make for "better." Not to take anything away from this newest gen of X Series models, because I REALLY love the X-T5 and the images that come out of that camera, but that doesn't take anything away from the look and feel of images I shot with the X-T2, and any of the other X Series models of that matter. In my mind, ANY of the X Series models, even going back to those first gen models, are capable of producing amazing image with wonderful color and tones, but again, there was something really awesome about the X-T2. What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot?

@@DanBaileyPhoto thanks Dan, I believe that you phrased it very well, it's not that newer is better, but mostly different. However, I still believe that if we speak about "amount of noise", I still believe that the X-T2 seems to be ahead of let's say the X-T5, as it seems to produce less noise. I also see a small difference between my X-T2 and the X-T30, while I love both, I find my X-T2 high iso night photos to have a better For high ISO situations, I generally shoot nightscapes (earth subject with stars on the background) or even stars alone. • @DanBaileyPhoto

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    Жыл бұрын

John, the sensor thing is interesting, and I'm excited to do a side by side test with my XT1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, just to see how they compare when shooting the same scene. There is undoubtedly a difference between how each one records and transmits the light, because generation of sensor is unique with regard to the number of pixels, pixel size, architecture and electronics. A camera like the X-T2 has fewer, and thus larger pixels than any of the X Series models that came after it, which all have a higher pixel count. In theory, a larger pixel can gather more light, and so the processor doesn't have to amplify the signal, which is how the camera handles low light. It's the inherent heat and signal distortion that causes the noise, just like a tube amp distorts when you turn up the signal. However, each generation of processor is more powerful, and so new algorithms can help reduce this distortion and allow a camera like the X-T5, which has smaller pixels than the X-T2, to have excellent low light performance with decreased noise than would have previously been possible. It's never an exact comparison, because they are two very different systems. Again, in theory, the smaller pixels on the X-T2 would be able to record more light, which would minimize the need to signal amplification, but the X-T5 has a much more powerful processor, which does a better job minimizing noise. And, add into the equation the fact that whether it's the asymmetrical sound wave oscillation from a saxophone, synthesizer or electric guitar, the smudgy dots of paint on a Monet painting, or the faded retro look or film grain of an old photograph, our human eyes and ears actually find some level of distortion to be quite pleasing. Basically, every generation of X Series do a great job with color reduction and noise control, but they all have a slightly different look, the key word being different and not better, because it's a very subjective thing.

I used to use an external HDMI monitor, but the little flip screen is a lot easier, and it takes less time to set everything up. I do think that Fuji positioned both the X-T3 and X-T4 as the top level cameras: the XT three being the still camera and the four being the camera made for primarily video shooters. But obviously a lot of still shooters want the features and stabilization that the T4 has. It’ll be interesting to see what they come out with this summer, or whenever it is they introduce the fifth generation X series camera they’ve been talking about.

I think I could do everything I need with that setup if I had to, great camera. I have no desire for the 3 or 4 the 2 is plenty good enoigh for me.

Wow, that's quite a collection of X-Pros and X-Ts you've had over the years!! And yes, the X-T2 is such a capable camera. Aside from a few specific features and video capabilities, the image quality and performance difference between the 2 and the 3/4 is not all that different. The 2 is still such an amazing camera! Which of those lenses do you like the best?

Bill, I totally understand. I love the 100-400, but I rarely travel with it. The 50-140 is a exceptional quality lens, it's much more manageable size for travel than the 100-400. You cannot go wrong with the 50-140, and when combined with the 1.4X teleconverter, it's even more powerful. So yes, if it's in your budget, I'd highly recommend the 50-140. I was always a nikon shooter but my Z5 I moved to felt too big for street photography. So was looking for a more compact style and my local shop had a very very lightly used x-pro2 with the 27mm pancake. I was skeptical about the "fuji magic" but since picking it up a couple weeks ago my nikon has not left the house. I picked up a 16mm 2.8 this weekend as well. I get a little gear envy looking at the x-pro3 but I still feel this 2 is pretty great. You still think it's viable in 2022?

Hey Derek, thanks for comment. Yes, absolutely. The X-Pro 2 is still a viable camera today. Sorry to hear that. I actually never used the battery grip for my X-T1. I preferred how small and light it was without, and it was still very capable for shooting action. The advantage of the X-T2 grip, was that it has the Boost mode, so it made a much bigger difference in performance. The X-T1 grip only added extra battery life, but not an increase in performance. • @DanBaileyPhoto

Hey there - The X-T2 is a much more capable camera than the X10 in nearly every way. Of course, the X10 is tiny, and will fit in a pocket or very small bag. The X10 would make a great walk around or travel camera and it's very convenient, but if you wanted higher resolution and if you shoot action or things that move quickly, the X-T2 will offer much more expanded performance and quality with the larger sensor and faster image processor. What types of subject do you like to shoot?
