It's been over a year since the announcement of the Fujifilm X-T2, and another 7 months longer since the X-Pro2's release in January of 2016. I've had an opportunity to test both cameras for over a year, including having pre-production models of both. Since I've had these cameras for so long, I have a pretty good idea what both these cameras are capable of and who each camera is for. I thought it was a good time to shoot a video on my final thoughts comparing these two flagship models before returning them to Fujifilm Canada. Thanks for watching and all your support. Happy shooting.
I haven't inserted any images taken with either of these cameras because I've written many articles and shot many videos with both these cameras. Here is a selection of videos and articles featuring these two bodies over the past year and a half:

    After being able to use both for a good amount of time ( two years ), I highly prefer the X-T2. Some differences that have been relevant for me are the following 1. The LCD Flippy screen as well as the quality. I can't seem to make my X-Pro2 a little less laggy. Looked up a little bit about it and it turns out that the X-T2 really has a better LCD as well as EVF compated to the X-Pro2. 2. The 'gloss' finish of the X-Pro2geta real annoying real quick. Scratches and marks sure become a part of your OCD nightmares. 3. The ISO Dial. Not a biggy but thought I'd include it in the list. 4. Being able to add the battery grip on the X-T2 (As an option) really comes in handy on paid shoots. 5. The sizes! X-T2 is a bit of a smaller camera than the X-Pro2 and I find it more pleasing to drag around on a day out say with friends or family. 6. The more 'decent' video capabilities. 7. The noticable faster AF. 8. The faster system in general, no lags whatsoever. With all these being said, both are lovely cameras. Have had so much fun shooting with both but I'd take the T2 and T3 any day over the Pro2.

    Yes, I agree that the graphite series is gorgeous...howver, for color-blind old guys like myself, I had the graphite XT-1, and had to squint to see the small function labels below the ISO control. So, my current X-Pro2 is black! That said, I sure wouldn't mind a black XT-2! .

I do have a random question if you have a moment... the kicks you have on in the last shot: I remember seeing some converse in weave style like that but not in that color and then the blue "tag" was throwing me off too... Would you mind sharing what they are? (nice match to the camera strap btw!) Thanks for your time.

    I really like the form factor and the aesthetic of the X-Pro2 with the viewfinder set off to the side. However the features in the X-T2 cannot be ignored: the AF tracking options, the folding screen for low angle/tripod use, the UHSII card slots, etc. Both models have the functions and styling matched to appeal to different types of photographers and different styles of photography. The X-Pro OVF without a doubt has its benefit, probably best suited for the 18, 23, 35 lenses. This is where the X100 series shines. Now Fujifilm just needs to release the X-E3, for those who desire the rangefinder style but don't require the OVF. Hopefully they'll put the focus thumb stick on that model too, and not leave it off like the X-T20... And like the comment below, I too was drinking my morning coffee while watching this great review.

    Two great cameras but after having used both, I prefer the X-Pro 2. For me, the look and feel of the X-Pro 2 has more quality feel to it. X-T2 (and certainly with the battery grip) feels more plastic-like.

    Alain Monnens Have to agree with you , ergonomics and build quality on Xpro's are a bit beter than XT-2 .If you know anything about ergonomy it is a bit wierd to call camera where you operating dials with both hands in order to change ISO, shutter speed , compensation dial, play, trash bin, drive and low positioned joystic beter than camera which can be operated with index finger and thumb of the right hand while left one supporting the lens. Looking from my usage experiance on XT-1,XT-2 ,T100 and xpro 1&2 and many other cameras (since 1982), XT's are by far less ergonomic than any range finder X camera out there.

    Very tough choice as both are great cameras. At the moment I have both an X-Pro 1 and an X-T 1, my X-Pro 1 is used exclusively with primes while my X-T 1 travels with my three zoom lenses. So I totally agree with your conclusions but will wait until the second hand price market falls before I upgrade my bodies.

  • @PauloFurtadoi
    @PauloFurtadoi7 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the review/comparison, Take! I agree with your conclusions. In terms of form factor, I've always loved both the classic rangefinder look and the SLR look, so I feel at ease with any. However, I went with the XT models so far just because they're the more feature-packed, greatly improved by updates, more versatile and just generally more consistent, IMHO. You really get what you pay for and then some. But the X-Pro's are wonderful cameras as well, I'd love to get one someday. Btw, again the video as shot on the X100F looks great, but of course you're not using it for a walk-around vlog, which might reveal some limitations?

  • @bigheadtaco

    @bigheadtaco

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes I too love love love the look and feel of the X-Pro2, but I have to pick function over form when it comes to my work. As for the X100F's video, without any form of stabilization, I wouldn't recommend it. The AF hunts, the focus motor is too harsh, and the focus breathing is visually jarring. However, on a tripod in manual focus mode, it's totally fine.

  • @bigheadtaco

    Thanks for watching. Yes the Fujifilm cameras don't do well for video autofocus. That's something they need to work on. I set the camera to manual focus, make sure the distance is correct, and then do a quick test video to make sure I"m in focus. However, if I'm with someone, I get them to back focus for me and then I start the video

    The xt2 is in its own league as far as its versatility. However, a few months ago, I bought an x100f. I so enjoyed that thing. It was just a different shooting experience. I've been using it as a carry around camera and also as a part of my wedding team. (Xt1, x100f and xt2) Here recently I ran into a couple of situations where the x100f seemed to limit me. My wife recently took me on a New England trip for my bday. We went to Boston, Philly and NYC. I took only the x100f because I knew that optically and iq wise it would handle the job. One day (the day that we were planning to walk one of these cities) it rained. It was a relatively slow drizzle most of the day; light enough to still walk around. It heavy enough to get everything wet. I spent more energy protecting the camera than taking pictures. And then while in NYC (a tightly built city) I found myself wishing that I would have brought my 16mm lens. So the dilemma is that I liked the experience of the x100f but was disappointed to only have one focal length and no weather sealing. My conclusion: I traded the x100f and tclx100 in for a xpro2 and 23f2. Now I have the xt2 and xpro2.

  • @bigheadtaco

    @bigheadtaco

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes totally understand the limits of an all-in-one camera. Unless you're totally set shooting at a fixed focal length, it can feel limiting using just a 35mm equiv, although it's probably one of the best one focal length to shoot at. X-Pro2 with the XF23mm f/2 would probably be my choice too

  • @avergara16
    @avergara164 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for this video! I'm torn between the two bodies since I'm transitioning from Nikon to Fuji. I recently bought the 16mm f 2.8 prime lens. Does that mean I'd have to rely on the EVF if I were to go with the X-Pro, since you mentioned the widest you can use the viewfinder is 18mm?

  • @torb-no

    @torb-no

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have the X-Pro 2 and 16mm f2.8. On the X-Pro 2 it's too wide to have framelines, however you can treat the OVF as being roughly what the lens will capture. Keep in mind that if you do close up shot the parallax error will be greater. This only works on X-Pro 1 and X-Pro 2 though as they have wide lenses for their OVF. The X-Pro 3 only have a single magnification for their OVF which isn't anywhere near as wide as on the 1 and 2.

    Hi Take. Great review. I'm in the X-Pro2 camp since I use it for travel and street work. I have all primes and just enjoy the smaller, lighter, and stealthier features. It's not necessarily the gear, but how the gear makes you feel when you're using it. Both are capable cameras but so are many other brands and models. Bottom line is what works best for the individual and what they are doing with it.

    hey John, I'm with you 100%. As I mentioned, the majority of my X Photographer friends all have the X-Pro2 and X100F. The most important factor of camera choice is the X factor. bigheadtaco good question... if I'm shooting video or have the camera on a tripod (especially in the studio), I'm using the XT2. If I'm shooting event or shooting for myself, it's almost always the Xpro2. OVF maybe 25%

  • @bigheadtaco

    @bigheadtaco

    7 жыл бұрын

    thanks for info. I know most of my friends with the X-Pro2 who also use OVF in the range of 10-25% of time only. Is that functionality that is only used 1/4 or less of the time worth more than an articulating screen or a larger faster EVF of the X-T2? Or is it more the styling and ergonomics that attracts you to the X-Pro2? I am genuinely curious since I had both for a long time and begrudgingly chose the X-T2 strictly for functional and ergonomic reasons. The only reason I'd choose the X-Pro 2 is because of the look, but very few X-Pro2 shooters will admit their choice was primarily based on aesthetics.

  • @mjeffharrison

    I do have a fondness for the aesthetics of the X-Pro 2. I bought the X-Pro 2 as a preorder when it was announced and used it exclusively until February of this year. I have a lot of muscle memory with it, and it feels great in my hand. I do like the articulating screen on the X-T2 (especially on a tripod/camera stand), and the EVF is fantastic. And I absolutely agree that it's technically superior. I just enjoy the X-Pro 2 more. Also, regarding ergonomics: the playback button under my right thumb on the X-Pro 2 is perfect. I don't generally have any automatic image review, and the placement of that single button keeps me from having to move my left hand from the lens.

    I got lucky. I've decided that rather than buy the latest iPhone for its camera, I'll get a real camera. And landed on one of the Fujis: X-T2 or X-Pro2. How did I get lucky? The first video I selected to advise me is yours. And I learned what I needed to learn. Thank you. I'm a stills shooter and I think the X-Pro-2 is prettier. So . . . By the way, I'm a long term Canon shooter. 5DIV and 1DXII and am not afraid of big cameras. I want to shoot some mirrorless and have a really good walking around rig.

    Thank you for making this video. You shared a lot of things that I find relevant to me so can I choose between the two. You, however, didn't do the x-pro2 justice as you didn't "talk" as much. Others might find it useful when they know why a rangefinder is good/bad/useful (in regards to x-pro2). I'm a longtime x-pro1 user and your video convinced me that I need the x-t2 more. For me personal as a photographer, the x-pro2 is the one for me; but as I can only buy one of the two.. for those other things I do, I need the x-t2 (esp video). Thanks again for this great (and proper) review.

    Yes it really was a quick (not so quick) spec and function run down, and by those standards the X-Pro2 does appear to 'lose'. But as I mentioned, the majority of my photographer peers that shoot the X series cameras prefer the X-Pro2 over the X-T2 so it shows you that features alone doesn't make a camera great.

    Excellent comparison, BigHeadTaco! Unless I missed it, you didn't mention the one "minor detail" that is identical between these two bodies...Image Quality!! Honestly, I agree with your assessment, and would have opted for the XT-2 if they were released simultaneously, but alas, when the X-Pro2 came out, not knowing if/when an XT-2 would emerge, I went with the X-Pro2 mainly to get the upgraded sensor and processing engine over my older XT-1. Had I known the XT-2 would've been releaaed only 6 months later, I may have waited. In any case, though I love the image quality I get with the X-Pro2 combined with the stellar Fujinon lenses (primes and zooms...the stellar XF16-55 and even the XF55-200 works fine on the X-Pro2...if you use the EVF!), I admit I would have preferred the larger EVF, articulated LCD, and the vertical battery grip of the XT-2! And FYI for all potential X-Pro2 users, I HIGHLY recommend getting the Fuji MHG-XPRO2 hand grip! It improves ergonomics 1000%, especially with the zooms! Thanks again!

I LOVE the ergonomics and handling on the X-T2 but the lack of IBIS (now up to 5.5 STOPS on the Olympus E-M1 Mark II) is a big drawback, especially shooting in low-light.

    Hi Take, many thanks, as always very interesting and fun! I always appreciate your reviews. I have been using the X-T2 for some months now, coming from the X-T1, but I have not given up on my Nikon DSLRs either. I currently live in the Middle East (UAE) and I have two major problems with the Fuji cameras (which are amazing in almost every other way). One is that the EVF, even though with the X-T2 is much brighter now, is still very difficult to use outside, under the full sun of the tropics (even with the brightness maxed). There is no comparison with the OVF of a DSLR, which I can easily use even with my sunglasses on, even under the brightest sun around here (and with my prescription glasses, when I use the Fujis under strong sunshine I need to constantly change from sunglasses to clear glasses - or discard the sunglasses altogether which would not be very healthy around here...). Maybe (just maybe) the X-Pro2 would help me with the OVF, but I need to test this first. Second problem is the heat dissipation of the mirrorless cameras. The temperature out where I am usually shooting is usually over 40 C (104 Fahrenheit) and it may go up to 45 or even 50 C (122 F.). The heat index due to both humidity and strong hot winds often goes above 45-50 C. The Fujis have been brilliant up to now in this environment (apart from some very annoying stoppages/ lock-ups, in all environments, even indoors, even when it's not very hot), BUT they turn extremely hot - too hot to handle actually - after a few minutes of use under the midday sun. Both the X-T1 & X-T2. I know it sounds like an exaggeration to someone who has not experienced this, but it's true (both the black and the silver bodies). Now, granted this is only out in the desert, fully exposed to the elements, under the morning-noon sun, but that's not a very unusual situation here in the UAE, quite common actually. On the contrary, my all-black Nikons feel only slightly warmer after a few hours of shooting in such conditions. This is not to bash the Fujis, they are, like I said, amazing cameras, but I have not seen any similar comments in any of the forums or mentioned by any of the reviewers, so I was wondering if other Fujifilm users have had such issues in similar environmental conditions. I'd be interested to know if you or anyone you know have similar problems (oh, and the lock-ups too, do you get these? I still occasionally get them with all the Fujis, even with updated firmware and very careful handling of the bodies and the lenses). Many thanks! Cheers, Manos

    Thanks for your comment. Yes, in a working environment under harsh conditions, nothing beats a DSLR. OVF is more reliable than an EVF, and due to its larger size and larger heat sinks, the camera stays cooler and batteries last longer. If I was in your environment, I would probably pick a D5 or EOS 1D as my workhorse camera.

    Hi Take, thank you very much for your reply - and for the advice! I guess you are right - I keep using my D810 (I'd love a D5 too, but the gyms are expensive around here :-) ), so I don't see this as the classic "I left Nikon for Fuji, did I do the right thing????" . Having said that, I keep trying to use the Fuji's as often as I can, as I like their size/weight and manual controls so much (not to mention live histograms etc). Despite their obvious advantages, DSLRs and their lenses due to their weight & size are hard to lug around in 45+ C and if you need to stay a bit invisible (often the case in my area), they make it harder for you. So pros and cons on both sides. But these are well known points, we all have to make our choices. Things were so much simpler 20 or so years ago :-). I still think however that mirrorless camera manufacturers should be tackling these issues (EVF brightness-reliability and heat dissipation/battery lifetime) more actively if they want to promote their cameras as DSLR-replacements for a lot of people. I am sure they will at some point. Thanks again, keep these great reviews and videos coming, much appreciate your positive spirit and the inspiration that you give to the community. Best regards Manos

    Love your work but going to have to disagree with a few things here especially the ‘video button’. I think the XP2 executed this a bit better. It is nice to be shooting stills and have the option to quickly capture a clip without going into any additional settings and menus using the Fn button. Either way, different tools...all in all like you say, XT2 (and the new XH1) for video heavy users and XP2 is a still camera that has video capability for occasional use. XP2 is much more a match for me.

    As someone who has the XT2 and have used the Pro2 before buying the XT2....the main difference for me was ergonomics and the viewfinder. The Pro2 lacks the quality I get with the XT2...Also I can hold the XT2 sideways with one hand and jumping around without dropping it. The image quality well both of them are point with the right lenses. All I am thinking about is investing in a good prime lens as I used the 18-135mm for the past year none stop. I was one of the first to test both cameras in Tokyo at Fujifilm headquarters.

    I currently don't have an X-Pro2 review copy, so I can't say. However, 4K on X-Pro2 should be similar to X-T20 and X-E3, so it should be decent. As for AF improvement, that's for AF-C which I don't really shoot in that mode. Overall, it's a good upgrade for all X-Pro2 shooters.

    Often read rangefinder style is mainly for right eye dominants. I'm left eye dominant and feel the X-Pro2 feels better and has a better layout. Mainly because I can reach and manage the buttons on the right side on it. Had the X-T2 for a 6 months, but couldn't handle the joystick or many of the buttons while having the camera to my eye. The joystick is also too low for my thumb. Miss the tilt-screen, though. Also, I have long fingers and struggl.e a little with the grip. Had both battery grip and smaller grip with arca swiss-plate. Both cameras have the same sensor and processor so they behave very similar. The biggest difference is when you're in AF-C mode, there's a gap in AF performance. As for EVF, the X-T2 is hands down superior, although you always have the option of going OVF on the X-Pro2 for lowlight. EVF in lowlight is still not there yet, so neither is fun in lowlight, although the X-T2's larger magnification makes it more tolerable.

    I am traveling to Oregon to photograph the eclipse and wanted to make sure that I had a backup. If both bodies are working on Eclipse day, I have a dual-camera mount that will hold one X-T2 (my new one, "Tara") on a slow-motion head with the 100-400 lens on it for a closer look at the eclipse and the other (the one I got last year, "Sara") on a standard ballhead with the 10-24mm lens on it set wide (the sun will be 41 degrees above the horizon at totality) and on the hotshoe I will have mounted a Sony action camera to capture the event. I am going to stop all photography of the partial phase five minutes before totality to make sure I have both cameras set exactly where they need to be for totality so that when the diamond ring hits I can start my nine-exposure bracketing and a cable remote in each hand. I don't even want to look at the cameras during those two minutes, I let my hands do the clicking while I focus on being in the moment. The solar filter I have for the telephoto lens attaches via a magnetic connection so I don't have to fiddle with unscrewing a filter at the critical moment.

I've asked around and nobody is transferring entire videos from their X series camera to their smart devices.

    Hey Bigheadtaco. I'm swithering between x100t, XT-1 and X Pro 1. I think these are all still great camera's for street photography. I have a Nikon D3300 and a Sigma 10-20mm for my street photo's but it's like pointing a rifle at people and I do worry about pissing people off shooting with it. Can't decide between these 3 though - I want a hybrid viewfinder with a reasonable sized eyepiece (I wear glasses). Also, needs to have a reasonable sized form factor (not tiny but maybe as long as my outstretched hand and no more than 3 fingers in depth), easy to find/change ISO/Shutter/Aperture settings and reasonable grip on the body to avoid it slipping from my hand. Do you have any guidance that you could give that might help me? Preferably an articulated screen as well. Video's are great and you have a fantastic personality that really comes across.

    you have some conflicting and overlapping choices between the 3. It depends on your priority. If you insist on a hybrid viewfinder, the X-T1 is out. If you insist on a articulating screen, the X-Pro1 and X100T is out. In terms of straight out performance and expandability, it's the X-T1 hands down. It's the newest and the top performing between the 3, it has the largest and fastest EVF, best AF speed and accuracy, articulating screen, the newest interface, the best grip (but worst rear button and dial feel due to first gen weather sealing). For me, in terms of functionality, features, ergonomics and performance, I'd say the X-T1 first, X100T second, and X-Pro1 third. All three will be fine if you're a good photographer and work around the quirks as there is no perfect camera.

    I know this video is older, but I just want to say, I have a great canon dslr. So, that being said, in September 2018 it seems I can find a x-pro2 for under a grand used. Nothing seems like it'll pair better with my dslr. I made the mistake of buying pro when I'm actually a stealth, candid, emotion shooter. I was simply unaware of the high end market that fits my needs. I care about the pictures more than anything, but second and third are experience and stealth. Fuji really seems like the camera for that. Canon mega body for long lenses and action and a fuji rangefinder for joy? Make sense maybe? Its so weird to say that digital photography turned me into someone who doesn't care about the specs when typically it's such the opposite.

    Is it normal that the batteries drains so differently on the x-t2? I have the booster grip with 3 almost new batteries, bought at around the same time. In camera i have 80% for example and in the grip l and r are 40%, or l and r not even at the same %

    +Xtremepower21 the batteries don't drain evenly. They draw from the booster grip first and then the body. They'll need to do a firmware update as the video stops when one battery dies

    I have the X-T1 but the sensor is not in the greatest shape. I'm eyeing the X-T2 but that X-Pro line looks really intriguing. The X-T3 is my "if money was no option" camera (and that new X-Pro3 looks amazing) but money is a reality so one of the "2" cameras for me next most likely. Photography is my main interest but I will be doing basic "talking head" videos so video features are important as well. Thanks for this comparison video.

    Mostly my Ricoh GR or my iPhone. Other than that, I'm always reviewing cameras, which keeps me busy and on my toes. Not the best for developing my own style, since each camera has a different feel and shooting style that comes with it.

    I've been shooting the X Pro1 for years and love it. Reminds me of my old Mamiya 6MF. Upgrading to the X Pro 2 in the next few months.

    Fuji tends to have that green tint in their photos, I don't really like that, looks wierd to me. Any fix for it you could recommend?

    Shot cameras like the XT2 for years..I chose the Xpro2 for something different mainly. I have zero interest really in video shooting, even though this has it, I doubt inwoukd really use it. Also, I never liked zoom lenses, primes only for me. I have zero regrets and loving the xpro2.

    yes it's pretty darn good as a tripod and manual focus camera. It's Fujifilm's colour science that makes it stand out.

    There is a store near me selling the canon m5 for 700 bucks, I found it online but saw its like 15 mins from me, I think I will get the canon. I was almost about to get the Sony a6500 and thought about the fuji because overall images seem a lil sharper and video is definitely sharper but the fuji only films for a few minutes and the Sony hasn't figured out the heating issue. I feel for the cheaper price I can hold on to the camera for a while and sell it comfortably at some point when hopefully these mirrorless cameras get a lil better. I like the drag to focus on the m5 and the Sony would be way more expensive, plus canon has warmer colors right away and I find the Sony images I see everywhere to be a a little too cold or sterile. The fuji looks better here but I think overall its price is a bit too much for a camera with fair amounts of limitations when it comes to its videos. Thanks a lot for the video!
