DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE

The Fujifilm X-T1, X-T2 and X-T3 are incredible value mirrorless cameras that can make some amazing images..
I've owned and used all three extensively, starting with an X-T1, then an X-T2, and finally an X-T3, but which is the best to buy now?

I like watching these. He's more a regular joe like the majority of us with just a passion for photography and aesthetics. I enjoy the channels of the "newest and greatest" tech but this guys is much more relatable to me. It's about a life style, art, the process and meaning. A great photo is more than just the technically sharpest technically perfect image. Or the "latest".

I bought an X-T1 first and I love it. While looking for a autofocus lens, to keep up with my grandson, I managed to come home with a real bargain on X-T3, and 2 Fuji lenses. The X-T3 deal was cheap enough and since it shoots great video, it allowed me to sell all my Micro 4/3 equipment. I still shoot the X-T1 almost daily with mostly vintage lenses. I could care less what the resolution is. I still really like the X-T3 but I take the X-T1 with me more. I love your videos and they have helped me a lot as I regress back into this hobby that I love so much. The Fujifilm cameras are like being back in the good old days, except better, because the film and processing budget went out the window.

This is great for me. Looking for a smaller second body and leaning towards a XT1. Since, ALL I shoot is vintage glass and don’t care about video. That’s what I’d use my iPhone for.

It's also hard to argue against getting a used Fuji X-H1 camera. It's bigger than the X-T series, but it has a beefier version of the X-T2 sensor and processor. Importantly, the X-H1 has sensor stabilization, which is perfect for shooting vintage lenses. These cost about $600 used today. Also hard to argue against used X-E2 or X-E3 Fuji cameras. These don't have all the dials and look of a vintage film camera, but they're very small and compact and lovely to use.

My first mirrorless was the XT-1, I had many DSLR’s at the time I bought it, I wanted to upgrade the resolution from 16-24MP so I bought the XT2, at that time the XT4 hadn’t come out yet, to my surprise the image quality wasn’t much better if any better than the XT1. I don’t use the XT1 much anymore, I shoot a good bit with the XT2 with both Fuji lenses and vintage Nikon glass. Fuji really found their niche with the analog controls. I would really like to have the XT5 but it’s more than I care to spend, still happy with my XT2. Composition is king and you don’t need the latest greatest to get great results.

I still like the Xtrans 1 in the XPro1. I also have an XT3, but the output of the XPro1 is still fascinating. Although the XPro1 is quirky, and adapting old lenses is much more fun with the better viewfinders of the XTs, the Xtrans 1 can still warm your heart. Conclusion: you need both 😊

I've had each of the X-T1, 2 & 3, now on my 2nd X-T2. I think you're right that, image wise, the T1 is the nicest. My wife had an X-T10 with the same sensor & it was just as lovely. The detail with the X-T3 was superb, but for me, the X-T2 is the perfect middle ground. It produces lovely images & I now shoot exclusively jpeg with the X-Weekly recipes. It also has some nicer features menu & control wise than the T1- the two way flip screen, joystick button and I like that it has Acros. I use it with 28 & 50mm Zuiko lenses and think I'll be keeping this X-T2 for quite a while.

I love videos celebrating the "older" models that still serve us so well. My x-t2 is beat up, the EVF has burn-in, and I really don't want to have to upgrade. It does under-expose by default, even with no filter. Anyone else have to turn the exp comp up a bit?

I have cameras with the first 3 X-Trans sensors, I, II, & III. Each sensor has its own look and feel, The X-Trans I in my X-E1 is more film like than any of the subsequent ones. It gives a sense of depth and atmosphere in the pictures. The X-Trans II in my X-E2s is my favourite, both the camera itself as well as the pictures it produces. The X-E2s is, in my opinion, just about perfect, 16Mp is more than enough for most purposes, the colours and rendition of light and shade is just sublime. It's a camera I would never get rid of. The X-Trans III in my X-E3 isn't a patch on its predecessor. also, Fuji decided to go touch screen - which I turn off - and joystick instead of D pad - again, a mistake IMO. It does have better resolution - 25Mp, and more exposure compensation control, but my favourit is still the X-E2s. I really like the rangefinder format of the X-E range, they are an unobtrusive camera, ideal for street and candid work. If you've never tried these bodies you're in for a pleasant surprise, but try the X-E2/s first, it's the best of them. George

@@bagzhansadvakassov1093 Depending on the focal length you want, for 50mm or so you can't beat the Helios 44/2, and if you want a wide angle lens the TT Artisans 25mm f2 in native Fuji mount, both those lenses are manual of course, and the Helios will need an M42/FX adapter, but those are cheap enough. The Helios will cost around £30, the adapter no more than £10, and the TT Artisans is currently£69 on Amazon UK. Please adjust prices for your country. If you want fully automatic lenses you really can't beat the 18-55mm kit zoom, but that's about 3 times the cost of the other two. Hope this helps.

I've had the XT range up to the 3 and still have the XT3 which I only use with the 50-140 & the 100-400. I also have a lovely old XE1 which was my first Fuji camera & I love it. However recently I convinced myself it would be good to have the flip screen & a rain proof body so I picked up a mint XT2 at a reasonable price to use as my main walk about camera and am so glad I did as much as I love the XE1 I much prefer using the XT line, probably because I grew up using basic SLR's. Sadly due to eye sight problems I can't use MF lenses anymore but thankfully Fuji have a fantastic range of reasonably priced AF prime lenses which are what I use. Cheers & thanks for the content.... 👍

Always love your videos. I started out with Fuji with an X-E1 which has the same sensor as the X-T1. That was the beginning of my love affair with Fuji. I have an X-T2 now which I also love. As I still have the X-E1, I should do some comparisons and let you know if I can see a difference. It's worth mentioning that the X-Ts have cheaper brethren for those on a shoestring budget. They generally give the same results but lose features that you would have to judge for yourself if you can manage without. I certainly loved my X-E1, fantastic camera and the same 'old style' control layout that you will never want to go away from once you use it.

The problem with the rubber parts on the x-t1 is solved by soaking them in gasoline for 30 minutes and drying for a few days, after which they return to their normal shape. They can be glued to the camera with thin 3M double-sided tape. So you can buy x-t1 with bad rubber parts for low price and then easily fix it.

Used to have x pro 1 but due the lack of e shutter and slow speed i decided to sell it. I was planning to buy xpro2(i love the idea of rangefinder), and was searching for good condition. But suddenly found exelent x-h1 for really low price, so now its my main stills camera. Its good, and ibis is great feature, but its a bit on a bigger size. And since having too many cameras isnt too great Idea, i was planning to sell xh1 but when the buyers started to write me, i changed my mind, and keept xt1 for now. Its too awesome.

I have an X-T2 and I'm thinking about getting a used X-T1 as a backup. A few years ago I did have the X-T3, then, I traded it for Sony, which I fell in love with, using for many years. Then, I decided to go smaller since I was only shooting landscape and the occasional street images. Sony APSC, well, I was lugging around 7 lenses with the body and at 69 yrs of age, that was a bit much. I did purchase several OM bodies and lenses which serve me well, but, I want to get rid of those as well, so, KEH Camera is my only option. I like that old film look, as you. Thanks for the comparison.

I have not been able to use the XT-1 much, however I love the way XT-2 renders images. Still have to fight the noise a bit in raw conversion. I plan on getting an XE-3 (which has the same sensor) when the recent inflation on used Fujifilm cameras passes. Off subject, you should try the Viltrox 23mm. I have managed to get mine to swirl under the right circumstances and it's render reminds me of a few vintage lenses.

I too had an X-T1, which I foolishly replaced with an X-H1. As good a camera as that was, the images were never on a par with those from the X-T1. I sold the H1, and bought another T1. Then I fell for a T3, and I love the images from it. Not quite the same as T1 images, but pretty good all the same. By the way, I did the same with the XF18-55 and XF16-80. I got rid of the 16-80, and replaced it with another 18-55. If I'd listened to the man who said: if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I'd be much better off money wise! As great as this combination is, I still hanker after after another X-T1.

My initial thought when I first picked up an X Pro3 was that the colours were disappointing compared to the earlier models. I'm over it. There is a setting called Color Chrome Effect, which can be used with any film simulation and offers two levels of intensity (weak and strong). It seems to deepen the colours and give them a bit more pop, especially the reds. I think by default the reds are a bit weak. Perhaps it is something to do with making nicer skin tones in portraits, but it looks awful on a phone box. I keep mine on the weak setting all the time now and generally its all good, but if you want punchier colours, just try the strong setting and see how it looks. I would say experiment with different film sims and the color chrome settings until you find one you like (for me it was Astia with color chrome on weak). Now when I look back to X Trans 2 images, I don't think they are better any more, in fact sometimes the colours can look a bit wrong!

If any i find the X-trans one to be more "filmic". When i switched from the X-E1 to the X-T10 i was kind of dissapointed at first due to the "harsh" contrasty appearance, but with a little tweaking it was just fine.

My first Fuji camera was an X-T20. I sold it for an X-T3 and some months ago I bought the X-T1 (for 180 €). I agree that images out of the X-T1 are more atmospheric but there is one major drawback: impossible to use it in Fujifilm X-Raw Studio. On my X-T3 I only shoot raw, using film recipes. In X-Raw Studio you then can export the raw to jpg with the recipes settings. That is not possible with the X-T1. Therefore I set this camera to export RAW + jpg.

I used an X-T1 with adapted M42 lenses and loved it until the rubbers started to peel off. Chopped it in for an X-T2 and noticed just like you the image quality was different from the X-T1. I stuck with it though, and now I really like the focus peaking choices and other aids to nail focus. I broke my Zeiss Flecktogon 35mm F2. 4 last year so purchased the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1 2 in Fuji mount to replace it. Expensive yes, but other camera features are now available to me within the viewfinder as it talks to the cameras electronics. A real bonus with aging eyesight.

I have an XE 1 and I rented an XT 3 for two days. 1. The XT3 image has become more "mainstream " this factor continues all the way through the range to the HS2. 2. As a Canon user I was blown away by the "flavour " of colours from my X E1❤ 3. As a new guy to Fujifilm, the XT 3 for me was far too powerful and complicated, so therefore it was too easy for me to get into a mess. Generally I think Fujifilm is a Photographic "system" which the new cameras cannot emulate. I think Fujifilm should have a Xtrans 1and 2 sensor simulation for their new cameras.😊

Another reason you may prefer the X-T1 sensor is the grain structure is more apparent. It adds a bit of character. Grain also blends the various elements of an image into a whole. That can be seen easily when you watch a 1930's film in a repertory theater with their big box screen. The combination of expert lighting, gauze or French nylon material and film grain (and careful development and printing) unifies the imagery. The nylon of course being used for closeups. My Man Godfrey is a good example. Even gorgeous Carol Lombard shots has filters in front of the lens. They may have holes where the eyes are, though. It's all about what they want you to pay attention to. Real artistry.

I had X-T1 and now use X-T3. I also noticed that out of camera X-T3 JPEGs look "worse" - perhaps they are less punchy? X-T3 also feels quite a bit noisier in the shadows than the original X-T1. Having said that, I don't care for Fuji film simulations, since I shoot in RAW and apply film looks with RNI in post. There is no contest here - RNI wins in every case. I found Eterna helpful for getting flat RAW-like output, for retaining highlights. X-T1 was great, but I would not go back.

The algorithm is tapping into my confirmation bias. Xt1 owner here. Love this camera. I think the image quality has something to do with the sweet spot of 16mp on crop sensor. My only gripe is the ergonomics of the very recessed push pad on the back.

Look up Sugru moldable hardening putty. I have put this on all my buttons on the X-T1 which make them much easier to press as now they protrude much more with the Sugru.

thanks @@danielcorry4136 Will check it out. Now the leather wrap has started to expand and slip though constant use - I've used good old black duct tape around the edges which now makes my xt-1 look kinda rock n roll in a DIY punk way. Sugru might just add the extra functional touch :)

I think most are in agreement that the earlier Fuji sensors nail the film look better. I don't think there there are any other digital cameras that even come close. My X100T which has the X-Trans II sensor is more 'filmic' than my X-T2 for sure. But they are all good cameras, can't go wrong with Fuji. I have an X100T, X-T2 and an X-T20.

If you own a X100, X-T1, X-E1/E2, it's all good enough - you're settled! Just need a decent lens. Take the 35/F2 XC, if 50mm is your thing, exactly the same IQ, as the XF 25/F2, minus the metal build, minus the aperture ring, minus weather sealing. Glass is all the same, even verified by DPReview. For ~150-180 EUR a steal. Get a XF 18-55/2.8-4 for the X-T1. The X-E, X-Pro series are best being used with small prime lenses, ideally for street. Or the XF 23/F2, which is a perfect 35mm into FF terms, sadly, no cheap XC 23/F2 being avialable here - Fuji, are you listening? If you're on the cheap side, or can't afford the XF lenses, just get the TTArtisan 23/1.4 or 25/F2 lenses, they're great for every Fujifilm X Camera, but these are way cheap. The 50/F1.2 is ideal, if you're shooting portrait, great lens, a steal for the money. As for wideangle, there's the 17/F1.4 lens. But one of the best TTArtisan manual focus lenses is simply the 35/F1.4 lens, if the XC 35/F2 is too expensive for you. For around ~70 bucks, it's a steal, way fast glass, too. I could recommand the 23/F1.4, 35/1.4 and 50/1.2, since i own them all, for Fujifilm, also the 25/F2, it sits on my X-M1 as street cam. Stop wasting money, and to buy every focal length for every system, that you own in terms of gear.

Nigel, help me out, been watching your videos for a few years now, love the old lens ones best. You are saying the difference in the sensors make a big difference to the final images colours and produce a different style of photo, but in your lens reviews you say they all produce different images, colour rendering and all that. How do you come to your conclusions on the final images, with all the differences around you, is it the camera or lens.

Both sensor (or film) and lens have a role to play in colour reproduction. Sensors play a more major role, lenses adding their more subtle effects on top of that. Hope that helps!

I’m not sure what you’re talking about when you say the XT4 has a loads and loads and loads of film simulations. They’ve only added two more film simulations based on motion picture, film stock. And I’m not sure what you mean by cooking your own simulations. You can tweak them a little bit but you just can’t create endless simulations. The simulations are the simulations your only controlling parameters that would’ve been available in a dark room.

You like pictures from smallest 16mgpx camera, Don't like really higher pixels sensors. You need to know if You like to get good quality picture on high mgpx sensor You need new lense what with hold this resolution, otherwise You will get worse effect. To 24mpx so small APS-C sensor ( on Full frame this will be about 45mgpx, You need really good and sharp lense. I had this same, better quality camera I buy worse pictures I like. Try on this new camera new verry good quality lenses, and than compare. Don't Use this same lenses from x-t1 16mgox on 26mgpx of X-T3. For older lenses , better is smaller sensor like this 16.

I've bought my X-T1 in order to use my Canon FD-Lenses on there. You're right ... the variation of film-simulations are not as much ... so I decided to shoot on standard anyway. As we all know picture-look comes and goes with the lens in front. So what lens did you use by taking such amazing pictures on the X-T1 you love so much ? I'm using my Canon FD-Lenses (old FD ... not the New-FD !!) ... 1.8 and 1.4 50mm ... and 2.8 28mm in order to compensate 1,6 crop APS-C sensors are coming with. So ... is that combination useful ... or will I ruin that beautiful sensor-look using that lenses ? And .... as someone told before ... Focus-Peaking is not on the point at X-T1 for my opinion .... there still is a small area you are able going throw while peaking tells you "sharp" !! So some pictures might get out of focus using peaking anyway.
