The FUJIFILM SWEET SPOT! The Fujifilm X-E2 - The Nicest Fujifilm Camera!

With its X-Trans 2 sensor, as found in the X-T1 and X-T10, the Fujifilm X-E2 makes incredible, beautiful, creamy, filmy JPEGs, unlike those from any digital camera.
Its rangefinder-like form means it's very compact and portable, it has lots of bundles film simulations including Classic Chrome, and the ability to 'cook' lots more!
This camera really captures the feel of some of the classic film cameras of the past. It shoots all the modern Fujifilm lenses, and pretty much any vintage lens ever made too!
If you're looking for a seriously capable mirrorless camera with a very small form factor, this one should definitely be on your list!

Good insights. I have the X-E1 and the X-T1. Love them both and totally agree with your comments on the differences between the sensors. I prefer the large buttons on the X-E1 to the flat almost flush X-T1 buttons. Plus while the T1 has front and rear dials, they are not pushable so I miss that natural, fast way to check focus. I think an XE2 might indeed be the perfect x series camera as you’ve suggested. It doesn’t have the touch screen swipes that are on the E3 and E4, and that’s a good thing IMO.

I just got my X-E2 today,,it's a joy to use i must say. Even in 2021,the camera doesn't feel dated the user interface is highly responsive and of course the amazing image quality. It's indeed the sweet spot when compared with it's predecessor and successors. I got a manual lens for it a 35mm f1.2 and a 16-50mm kit lens. 50mm f1.2 in due time. Thanks for your amazing videos 🙏🏻

Great review! I have experience using X-E1, X-E2 and X-E3. I am still using X-E2 and X-E3. I like the faster AF speed and larger pixel count of the X-E3, but X-E2 is the more enjoyable camera to use. What I love most about the X-E2 is the D-pad. it provides 4 additional function buttons, so you don't need to use the screen swipes. I really hate the screen swipe functions on digital cameras because it gets activated unintentionally all the time! Oh and the x-trans 1's pixel count is actually 16MP, just like the x-trans 2. The main difference between the two, I believe, is the addition of phase-detect sensors to x-trans 2.

Even after owning and loving modern Fujifilm cameras (X-T2, X-T3 and X-Pro2), I bought a new-in-the-box X-E2s that was sitting on a shelf unsold. The small "s" designation signifies that it is the X-E2 but with all the firmware updates and a few external tweaks. I love this camera! I even bought the $60 Lensmate thumb grip which improves the physical handling. This sensor makes older lenses that may suffer from too much resolution like on the X-T3 look good. I really like the much maligned 18mm f/2 at 16mp on the X-E2s.

The X-Trans I & II (X-E1, X--E2) are two Rangefinder styled DSLMs, which are from image quality still many years after coming to market still excellent. The X-E2, with the advantage of 1) more Film simulations 2) better AF System 3) not laggy EVF like the X-E1, but i like the output from both way much. 16 MP is still plenty, now and into the next upcoming years. /typo fixed

I have many modern Fujifilm cameras, but after seeing so many testimonials to the earlier sensors, I bought a brand new in the box X-E2s... same as X-E2, but a few minor external tweaks and all the firmware updates incorporated as is. I love the look from this sensor, very film like. It is my most used camera when I have nothing specific in mind but want a camera available during a outing. The small Fujicrons are a perfect match in terms of ergonomics. My recently acquired 27mm f/2.8 R-WR is perfect as my general use lens on this camera. Great video! The XE2 is a wonderful camera overlooked by many who are unable to look beyond sensor size and pixel count which is a shame as the sensor in these is superb. The build quality is outstanding and feels like old high end mechanical 35mm cameras, you don't find such nice tactile feel very often in today's world. And you get access to a wide range of superb lenses offering some of the best build and optical quality available. And although Fujinon lenses aren't cheap they are very competitive with mirrorless lenses from Canon, Nikon and Sony. Even today the XE2 is worth buying.

The beautiful thing about Fujifilm back in the day, and especially the X-E2, is that many of the features you mention weren’t there on release. I bought mine in mid-2014. It didn’t have Classic Chrome, didn’t have multiple focus peaking colours (not sure if it even had focus peaking at all at release), but those were all added in firmware updates. General performance, autofocus etc got better. When it sadly drowned in the Mediterranean in late 2017, it wasn’t the camera I’d bought. It was much better, it was the mature product you describe. After the accident, I immediately bought the then brand new X-E3 and while it’s technically a better camera, I never connected to it the way I did with my X-E2.

Digital images can be quite harsh, while the Fuji film sims are almost always delightful. Thank you Nigel for your knowledge and enthusiasm and also your presentation skills(why do the Americans talk so fast - their Cowboys didn’t used to do(well not according to Hollywood). I have been fiddling with cameras for nearly 60 years now, never having had a lot of money I have bought second hand except for the last few years. I have owned a Leica M3(which I sold at a silly price when I was hard up) but I remember the feel of it which made me want to take photographs. I did cover 8 Weddings of which I charged for 7 of them(does that make me semi professional?) using a Mamiyaflex C330 and a Canon F1 aided by a Weston Master V. That modular Canon was so easy to use and so reliable and that is what attracted me to the SLR Fuljifilm cameras and I bought the XT2 early last year. BUT it is not an easy camera to use if you use the digital menu. Every so often I dip into the handbook, then I watch instructional videos and it is still a mystery to me. I am sticking to Aperture Priority with ISO on Auto for now. I do appreciate the colours that come from that wonderful sensor but I need a simpler camera and have been looking at test reports on the X100 though I suspect the digital menu will be as complicated. Nigel’s report on the various cameras in the Fujifilm range has focused my attention on the XE2 as I would welcome the smaller size. Advice would be welcomed.

@@zenography7923 👍The XT series have far better EVFs, but I like them on the left and the XE2 is barely noticeable with a Fujicron. And totally unnoticeable with a lightweight pancake like their 24 or 27, Lomo T43 and Insustar 69. I am hoping the future TTartisans 23mm f5.6 will also be a nice pancake addition. It's a camera I never debate taking with the 27mm, whereas the X Pro is that little bit heavier and an XT more so. Although the X Pro with those tiny lenses isn't much heavier than an XE2 with a Fujicron. IMHO the 1 is too slow, the 3 is just not enjoyable with it's differences and smaller EVF and shorter eye relief and the XE4 also lacks grippage. The XE1 and 2 are mini X Pro 1s i.e. better built. The E series is dead. Only reason to switch my X Pro 2 would be a lighter version with nice EVF. Maybe an X Pro Lite. The XE2 will never be sold. Excellent point about being able to use more detailed jpeg recipes. And you're quite right about the difficulties in peaking on the XE1. I manual focus exclusively. And it's not hard to imagine that I could rely less on magnification with better peaking.

Very nice cameras. I've been wanting to play with Fujifilm's film sims for a while and the X-e2 might be the one I add to my collection when I'm able to put some extra money towards another camera. I really like sensors that give a film like look. Even though I've been using it for a short time, it's one of the things I've really come to love about the Canon 5D2 that I recently got. It gives an absolutely beautiful film look to it's photos. I was a bit concerned about the LCD monitor not moving, but to my surprise, that hasn't bothered me at all, so I doubt that it will with the X-E2 either. Thanks for the review.

@@kevinroberts1888 sorry, I wrongly assumed the old 6D and APSC 600D/T3i would be similar. I recall the 5D 2 being a classic. Probably a big step up. I never used it but recall a friend spending a lot on it. I just did video on the 600D with the kit lens and tragic lantern. It had a nice smooth look. And the wife's 6D with the cheap 50mm f1.8 seemed to have a similar smoothness. Not really a lack of detail, just a less clinical sharpness. With the Fuji XT3 the 50mm f2 was too sharp and contrasty. Great at times as it was such an impressive look. But I used a vintage 50mm too for a smoother look. When I went back to the XE2 the image softened and I didn't feel the need to have a vintage lens too. It was a nice middle ground. Not razor sharp, but definitely good enough.

My Fujifilm journey started with X100 (from new), then X Pro1 (£200), then XE2's (£200), then X-T1 (£300 including battery grip), then XE3 (£350 new end of stock) and finally X-H1 (£750 including battery grip). The X100 and Xpro1 whilst wonderful IQ cameras were lacking in various ways. Both had clunky AF and less than stellar viewfinders. Hence my move to the XE2s, which solved all of these problems. I did need to add a grip to it for better handling, but it is very light and does not add to the weight much at all, unlike the grip I had to add to the XE3 for the same reason. The X-T1 came as I liked the XE2s so much I wanted something with a bit more versatility. It fits the bill perfectly. For me it is the perfect mirrorless camera in terms of size and functionality. It is barely any larger then the XE2 yet gives a nicer viewfinder image and is easier to use I find with MF lenses. All in a better built body. Flirtation with the square format and a desire to try out the newer film simulations convinced me a XE3 would be a good buy. It fulfills these desires, but I do not like the output so much, and those newer simulations really are not very good IMO. It does not fit my hands as well as the XE2s either. I need to sell one of the XE models and I suspect it is going to be the XE3. The X-H1 I got as I need the IBIS for longer telephotos. The image output seems to be slightly nicer than that of the XE3, even though it has the same sensor. It has the best EVF of the lot, but that does not outweigh its disadvantages of greater size and weight, poor battery life and ergonomics that I find not as good as the X-T1. It is a keeper, but only as it fits my niche use of tele lenses. I would not call it a camera I like. I have tried the X-T10 line of cameras but they are a horrible fit for my hands and the same goes for the X-S10. The X-T2,3 and 4 have all piled on weight with each new model and do not appeal for this reason. The Xpro3 does certainly tug my heartstrings but it is hard for me to justify the cost of this model at present.

Its just a quality crafted camera. The XE3 has the cheap looking stuck on rear thumb rest and feels less solid etc.... I think it went from being a mini X Pro to a budget line. Now it is officially the budget line as the 2 bayer cameras seem to have been axed. I was constantly in awe of the XT3's features but need a left EVF for photos. It was just a tool, whereas the XE2 and X Pro 2 are enjoyable. Sounds like the XT1 is lighter. I wish I had a smaller nose and liked central EVFs because the XT line have bigger EVFs. I have and xpro 1 and 2 and find I like using the EVF more, but I also kind of like having an OVF. However, I do not really and truly think on those models that the OVF gave me much help or worth per se, but I kind of always like to have one more bell or whistle. I have found generally and for quite some time that I much prefer an EVF, especially when it can provide a preview of the final image according to the camera adjustments. In such cases you really get to see the final image before you shoot it. This goes off topic but brings up ETTR. While are are those who advocate ETTR and the like, basically that provides an image you are usually NOT after, but possibly a more flexible raw file for processing. WHY NOT just shoot it the way you want it to look, IF that possobility presents itself? Sure if you crush the darks or blow the highlights originally; you lose flexibility, BUT if that IS the image you want why play with ETTR at all? I mean why maximize sensor data beyond what you want? Besides, if you shoot ETTR later you may have NO idea why you shot the image since all the subtle shadows and dancing litgh is subsumed into the usually over exposed raw file. Every time I shoot ETTR I end up taking a second shot that looks the the one I really want anyway. Shoot things the way you want, but basically the ETTR technique is kind of an annoying work around that really should be reserved to situations of landscape bracketing and the like, IMHO.

But it's also a fantastic camera for learning about the technical stuff too - and once you understand the exposure triangle it's really not that hard. If you can drive a car or operate a washing machine you can learn to use this camera - or just keep it on auto for an easy life!

Hi there - I think you made a mistake on X-E1 camera sensor details - it is not a 12Mp - it is also 16Mp sensor. And yes - it is X-Trans1 sensor in X-E1, and X-Trans 2 in X-E2 - this is the difference.

@@zenography7923 No need to apology here - I am enjoying your videos on different things here. I own X-E1 - and funny enough - I prefer it to my Nikon Z5 when it comes to work with manual focus lenses - X-E1 (with its limitation in pixels in display and EVF - it much better in determining in-focus moments. You 100% right that X-E1 not shines in peakin support, but the zoom button function makes this issue irrelevant.

The X-E2 is much better than the X-E1. So much faster in all areas. If you are patient you can pick up a mint X-E2 off ebay for around abouts £200.00. I did! Put the 35mm f/1.4 on the X-E2 and you will be ever so happy with the results! ... especially in B&W. You will be so happy... you will have a huge happy grin on your face!

I think the XE2s is the best of the bunch. Great sensor and film simulations and faster focus and better focus peaking and great for adapted lenses and a film like look and better in camera processing and a nice feel in the hand that you can get a grip frame for and a thumb grip also and............. I obviously could go on and on and I will never sell this one and may even get another !

little note : the X Trans 1 sensor is 16.3 MPx, just like the X Trans II. Actually, the X Trans 2 is very similar to the X Trans 1, main differences being the AF performance and noise reduction FUji only use 12MPx APS-C sensors in the original X100 (which is also a Bayer array rather than XTrans)

had the x-E2. On the plus side: small body, only 16 Mpix that is enough for a decent photo, any MPix more does not make a good photo much better On the minus side: small EVF with noisy, pixely image and no tilt-up screen, which is essenial for street photography

Was tempted with a small Fuji when I was looking for pocketable companion. Strayed away when I realised I was going to have to purchase a who new set of lenses. Settled on the Lumix LX100., not the same image quality, but it does tend to come with me.
