    Great video Dan, your pronunciation of Scottish words is excellent! I loved your images from Isla, I'm more of a Laphroaig man than a Lagavulin man, but each to their own, there's a whisky for every man, they say over here! This series about the X cameras has me hooked! Don't think I'll be upgrading from my X-T2, that thing is bulletproof. I do want that 100-400mm lens for telephoto landscapes, I think I could do with a bit more reach than my current XC 50-230mm can offer. I wonder if they'll ever make a 150-600mm?

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    Thanks, Kevin. I do like Laphroaig as well. We can often get the standard 10 Yr at Costco, and a couple years ago, a friend gave me a bottle of Laphroaig Select. Really enjoyed that one as well! Lagavulin was the first smoky whisky I ever tried, and at the time, it seemed sooooo strong, but now, we're so calibrated to the smoke, we hardly notice it! 🤣 Also love Ardbeg An Oa, which shows up here in our local dealer from time to time. Really good stuff!! The 100-400 is fantastic, as is is the new 70-300, which also works with the Fuji Teleconverters. Might be a better choice for hiking. And yes, Fuji actually has a 150-600 on their roadmap. They announced its development last fall, but I don't know when it's slated for release. We could see it later this year, but it's going to be pretty big and quite expensive; a full-on pro quality lens, similar to their 200mm f/2.

    Thanks Dan for another winner down Memory Lane! Your love of photography certainly brought many new people, adventures, trade shows, photo trips, biking, traveling, and more new experiences into your life. I am wondering, What would your life have been like if not for photography? You would have had more time for music, biking tours and races. I am sure other fun and creative experiences. You create enthusiasm and passion with whatever you do! This is a beautiful way to life life! You pack MANY adventures into your years, time goes by so quickly. You are in a flow state in most any moment. This is not easy, even with things people enjoy. You could easily give a class on creativity and curiosity, leaving out the photography and even the music. It is the how you do what you do with MUCH passion & purpose that is most important in life, not the what or the content. Most people focus only on the content. This is great if the topic interest applies to you. It becomes difficult to translate this passion into another area for the audience. However, with your amazing storytelling skills and life of adventure, people can visualize how they could become more passionate in their lives. It is fun & stimulating being around someone who loves whatever they are doing. This describes you very well!! Thank you for sharing and caring Dan!!!

    As always, Sharana, another wonderful comment. I agree with everything you've said here, and I think that you read me well. While photography is the primary vehicle with which I use as the foundation of my adventurous life, you are correct in your assessment that the enthusiasm and passion for life itself is what drives me most, whether its photography, music, cycling, travel, good food, whisky... For me, it's all about diving in and fully exploring whatever it is that interests me at the time, while at the same time, trying to make room for all of my passions in life. You're right, living with passion and purpose is so essential, but I think that the bridge to all of this is having the curiosity to ask questions and explore all of those different avenues of interest, and the courage to actually step forward and being each journey, having no real idea where it might take you. This is my own key to fulfillment, and it has certainly brought me innumerable rewards. And yes... a constant state of flow, which is not always easy. I do love inspiring others to life their own full lives, and I would like to give more classes/talks on creativity. That's largely what my Photograph on the Brain series is all about, but I'm always looking to spread that message in other ways too.

    And there are certainly times when I think about how my life might have turned out if I had not chosen photography as my main path. I often wonder what it would look like if I had stayed with music. When I was nearing the end of college, I begun to realize that a career as a recording engineer/producer would mean much time spent inside windowless recording studios and smoke-filled bars, and that's the main reason I begun to lean towards outdoor photography. That said, I'm very much intrigued by the way that the music industry has evolved, especially with artists taking charge of their own productions and promotions, by using new technology and media. I'm certainly exploring that myself, with own music I'm making lately, and the music-oriented social media I'm doing on my new Instagram music channel: instagram.com/danbaileymusic/

    @@DanBaileyPhoto Interesting comment Dan, considering your working environment, as well as the job and passion. I think many people fail to think of the whole picture here. It is difficult often to get a good fit with both the job and the environment. You were smart in thinking holistically where your body adapts best, just not what you are doing. Hi Walt, thanks for your comment. I might have been talking about the XF23mm f/1.4 lens vs the 23mm f/2. Both are very good, and the f/2 version is weather sealed and more compact, but I’ve just had the 1.4 version for a long time and although I done use it all that often, it’s a super, incredibly sharp lens. If you want that kind of focal length, either works be great. It’s really about which form factor you feel would fit with your style. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?

    Once again a great video Dan. I'm an MTB, Gravel bike rider and I've tried carrying my X-T2 on my person but the damn thing kept swinging about, no matter how much I altered the position of it. I gave it up as a bad job! I keep looking at the X -E3 with a pancake lens on it which might fit inside a Jersey pocket. I live on the edge of the English Lake District, and we get a fair bit of wet weather here, it can be several seasons in a day. So I'm reluctant to go for a camera that isn't weatherproof.

  • @DanBaileyPhoto

    @DanBaileyPhoto

    2 жыл бұрын

    Paul, thanks for your comment. That's always a dilemma. While I will often ride with the camera slung around my shoulder, I can't really ride technical trails like that. An X-E3 with the 27mm pancake would be a very tiny option. When I ride with one small camera, I will often store it in one of my Revelate Designs bike bags, like the Gas Tank, Feed Bag, or even a frame bag. Or else, I'll wear a tiny camera pack, or waist pack. That said I find that weather-sealing is a great feature to have but sometimes it's not a deal breaker. You could keep the camera in your jersey pocket for the ride, but when the rain really starts to come down heavy, you can stash it somewhere a little more secure. I've found that even the non WR Fujis are still pretty tough, and I've used them in very wet conditions. Generally, it's the prolonged exposure to rain and moisture that will start to seep in, so if you can do your best to keep them shielded from direct rain as much as possible, that would help. I've bike toured twice in the UK now, but I'd really love to go over there with my mountain bike and ride some of your more technical trails and long XC routes!

    @@DanBaileyPhoto Hi Dan. Close up nature to begin with. Trees, bark, close ups of things like wall textures, landscapes. I'm going to use the camera in my artwork mainly, as I do a lot of Photoshop compositing work. I've only just got the camera. I already found the HDR menu, which is rather exciting! I found myself wondering how successfully it combines images to produce a better end product? Say 9 pictures of the same patch of grass. Would it be better then taking one? Anyway Dan, I'm in the UK, so it's a bit late here, but will take another look tw.

    Cool. I think you'll really like the X-S10. There are so many fun creative features inside the camera. Regarding the HDR mode, it uses the data from three different exposures to combine and create the final HDR image, I don't know if it would be better than manually combining 9 images together inside Photoshop, but it does give you the option to play around with that kind of creative look right inside the camera. From what I've seen, the results are pretty good, defiantly worth exploring.

    Whatever Fuji pays you, they need to take it up a notch. Sure, you take wonderful images, but I know Fuji cameras from lots of hands on, and the X-Pro 1 has the best sensor of them all. Period. Purchased and sent back a X-100V last year, the colors was nothing like that old X-Pro1. Too bad it did not have diopter control, otherwise I would have purchased it all over again. Slow AF does not bother me at all, I shoot manual focus and no video. Jan.

    Haha! Fuji only pays me when I do workshops and presentations for them, but I'll take that as a compliment! I never used the X-Pro 1, but I do have an X-E1, which used the same sensor, and while I don't necessary think it was better than the sensors that came after it, that first gen X-Trans certainly produced wonderful looking images! So, what camera are you using now, Jan?

    @@DanBaileyPhoto Hello again. At present I use the Lumix S5 but only with adapted Leica M-mount rangefinder lenses (i.e. Voigtlander). It slows me down and makes the whole process more meditative and so far, I like that. Jan.

    That is a good approach, Jan. The more you allow yourself to slow down and think about what you’re doing, at least some of the time, the better photographer you will become.
