My First 100 Mile Ultramarathon: Rocky Raccoon 2021

On February 6th, 2021, I had the opportunity to run my first one hundred mile trail ultramarathon at the Rocky Raccoon 100 in Huntsville, Texas. It was an awesome day with friends and family, and when all was said and done, I got to take home my first buckle!

So nice to see someone who enjoys _Hot Rod._ Richardson is too pure for this world.

Great video man. I also enjoyed your video on the JFK50. Matter of fact I just ran the JFK this past Saturday and I’m already eyeballing 100 mile races. Just might sign up for the Rocky Raccoon 2023. Not ashamed to admit that you finishing that race with your dad brought a tear to my eye. Nothing quite like ultra running. Keep up the great content my friend and God Bless.

Hello! I do not know if you will see this comment but I believe I saw you this last weekend at Arkansas Traveller 100. I watched your running videos while training for this one, my first 100. When I showed up for packet pickup, I think I saw you! If it was you, I sure hope you had a terrific race. I prayed to get through it and by the grace of God I finished just 5 min before cutoff!

I was there! Such a fun race. Broke 24 for the first time. Congrats on your finish! That must've been an incredible moment for you! That's a *tough* course for a 30 hour cutoff. Hope to see you out on the trails again. Be sure to say hello!

I can see how those final miles with your dad could have gone : Every few minutes turn and look at him... "This is all your fault you know". Kidding aside, having your dad there to run you in put a smile on my face.

Thanks Zack for this. Heading down that way in February for the 2022 RR. You helped me out verbally with the course and I now can see it better. I'll just keep on truck'n with Isaiah 40:31.

Congrats! My first 100M finish also. We had such good WX vs my first attempt in 2019 (made it 85). Like you I got sick, tired beyond belief, got emo right behind the lodge, but running from aid station to aid station and sense of camaraderie makes it all worthwhile. Chris McWatters and Tejas Trails do a fantastic job at this race....thank goodness they pushed to make this happen during COVID...... Happy trails.

I'm running my first 50k in May 2022 and I'm watching all of these that I can. Videos and commentaries like this one have me very anxious (in a good way) to get out and run and push myself. I really enjoyed watching this and hearing about the positive commenting about your experience. Thank you!

Good luck! It's always good to be a little anxious, I think. It takes a lot of mental energy to prepare for an ultra marathon. I hope you enjoy every step of the journey!

Congrats Father Zach! I also loved your JFK50 video. I've run the JFK 15+ times and it never gets old. Hope to make the trip to Huntsville for the Rocky 100 in the next few years. You may also like the Umstead 100

Thank you! JFK is such a cool race. I hope I can make it back to Maryland to run it again. I highly recommend Rocky 100. East Texas is really beautiful. Many people (including myself one year ago) don't even know it! Just a few months ago I was in Raleigh for a wedding. Drove past Umstead State Park by happenstance and was like...Oh, wait, I know that place! Very beautiful part of the country there in NC, also!

A solid plan! I used to run without a GPS watch. I was given one as a gift and I've found it very useful in race situations not so much for keeping track of distance (it tends to be at least somewhat inaccurate under heavy tree cover, which is a problem during many trail races), but for making sure I don't accidentally move too much faster than my goal pace early in the race!

Good luck to you! Wish I could come down and help at an aid station, but I'll be busy, unfortunately. My Strava shows about 5,700 feet of gain for the 100 mile. That strikes me as being at least somewhat accurate.
