@@legendofthefox86 Thanks! Just watch out, because it looks like the course is a bit different now under the UTMB banner. I think it still utilizes a lot of the same trails, but the start/finish area is different (at least, It has been for the past year or two).

Thanks man. It's such a great race, and such a well-organized event. The course is very well-marked. You just have to stay alert and never assume you know where you're going. Check for markers anytime you see a side trail or hit an intersection, and anytime you go a few minutes without seeing other runners or trail markers, stop and assess your surroundings before you go too far off course. If you run enough races like this, you're guaranteed to make a wrong turn eventually, usually just out of exhaustion or poor judgment. But they do a really nice job keeping everyone safe and on course at the Arkansas Traveller.

I first want to say thank you for putting out this content and recap. I was bib #631, finished in 35hr 50min. There's so much you talked about that was spot on with my experience... from the very early (and unexpected) entry into the hurt locker, to the GI issues, and hallucinations. I played the same "get to the next aid station and don't drop out" game for almost the entire first half of the race, feeling absolutely miserable. The concept of taking a monumental task and breaking it down in very manageable sections. Once I hit the halfway point, I was able to eat (and hold it down), drink, and found a renewed jolt of energy, from miles 52-70. North River Gap (inbound) was, to your point, an absolute war zone. But from that point forward, all I could think, my entire thought process, was based around one question: "what if". What if I could bury all the quit, put aside the overwhelming desire to walk away from the hardest physical and mental endurance challenge I've ever done, and pull off a miracle? Now, the why: I love ultra marathons because they force you out of your comfort zone. They force you to show the world (or at least everyone at the race) your anxieties, your vulnerabilities, your laughter, your tears, who you truly are. And, because it redefines what you're really made of. You probably passed me sometime in the second half, and I don't recall it most likely because I was too busy being mesmerized by all the blueberries on the forest floor (which in retrospect were actually acorns), but congratulations to your finish. You're part of a very small group to have signed up for, raced, and finished one of the most difficult (b)east coast ultras. Be well. From Boston. Tim

Tim, Beautiful reflection! Thanks for sharing. And it's so good to hear the thoughts of someone else who finished the same race. That's one thing that can be tough after these races. They are such, as you accurately put it, vulnerable experiences, but oftentimes you don't really have anybody to unpack it with afterward, because everybody kind of just hobbles back to their lives shortly after crossing the finish line. Half the reason I even make these recap videos is to give myself an opportunity to capture my own race experience before I begin to forget it. Speaking it out, even in front of a camera, can be somewhat cathartic haha. Congrats on the finish! Hope to see you out on the trails someday!

  • @Endurance83

@@messinwithzacksquatch I like your analysis of "everybody hobbles back to their lives shortly after crossing the finish"... it is so true. We go through the best & worst of times with people who do these events, yet, never even see them again. It's a very disconnected aftermath, yet so many of us have the same experiences which is why I'm very thankful of YT bloggers (such as yourself) that not only have the technical wherewithal, but the courage to put out content about ultra experiences. Keep up the good work, and yes, hope to see you on the trails someday. Cruel Jewel 2022 is my next adventure. Cheers.
