So much of what Alex plays is subtle and provides the background and mood. If you listen to some of the earlier stuff you may notice things you didn't before. As a bass player I didn't appreciate what he added to the music for years, now I can't help but notice it.

Nice reaction Justin. Almost all us fans wished for a longer guitar solo at the end. I would happily listen a couple extra minutes of Alex playing. Again like in the case of Tears, there's a Dream Theater live cover of this song with John Petrucci extending the solo. You could check it out. Dream Theater founding members were big big fans of Rush.

Something so unique and pleasing about Alex's arpeggios. He'll find two or three chords with common notes and use those common notes as open strings for the arpeggio. Usually letting them ring out. He's does it so much and it's great.

Such a great solo on the fadeout and why did they fade it out so soon???? They fade out an awesome solo too soon as well on a song called "Mission" from Hold Your Fire (coming up later on your channel hopefully!). I think Geddy wrote the lyrics for this song so you can't blame Neil for the "dragons" reference. But I think in this case (like with Madrigal) "dragons" aren't used in a D&D sense but more of a literary tool to represent some powerful and overwhelming force. Both songs refer to slaying the dragon with words alluding to the idea that words and what we say can be super powerful. More powerful than swords. And it's interesting that both references are in "love" songs. Be careful what you say and how you say it to your significant other or you may hurt them more than you realize. You mentioned that Hugh Syme is the unofficial fourth member. For a long time Terry Brown (the producer) was considered (even by the band) as the unofficial fourth member because they were so close and had such a long relationship. Plus Terry saved that first record and mentored Rush on recording throughout those early records. Later Rush would decide that they wanted a different viewpoint and stopped working with Terry. The last record with Terry is Signals so it will be interesting to hear your commentary on how Rush's sound changes after that. It might be worthwhile to note the different producers they use on the later albums get your take on how they influence how those albums sound. Finally, I think Hugh's last name is pronounced "sime" with an "eye" sound in the middle.

I started watching you mainly because I love RUSH and you also resemble a dude I met my first year in community college that I used to hang out and party a lot with. As far as Geddy's voice goes, it's something that grows on you over time. The first time I heard him was on "Fly by Night" when I was in the Army at the Yakima Firing Range in 1975. It was on a portable, transistor radio and everyone who heard it said: "man, that guys voice is really weird". But over the years I've grown and matured with RUSH and they're one of my top 10 bands of all time. I'm almost 70 now and still rockin' hard. If I could manage to go out while listening to "Lessons" from 2112 I'd be a happy camper. It's one of my favorites by them but I don't know why. It just strikes a chord inside of me. Keep up the good work man. You are a kewl dude and I'll continue to enjoy watching you as you grow in your appreciation of RUSH! Peace ....out.

My only comment as a long time fan of Rush, is that I consider Terry Brown (long time producer and real person in charge of the band sounding as it sounds) as the real 4 member of the band. You will notice a change after the Signals album, and also, Terry was complaining of the predominance of the synths in the songs. Saludos from Panamá in Central America!!

I think why you are identifying with Alex on this album, is that he's using new chords and their arpeggios. He's always done that, but he's finding more "delicious" chords to use. Remember: Rush never repeats themselves. New album. New direction. New sound. and yes, more synths from album to album. But, no synths on Counterparts. And a return to the big fat chords and riffs. And you have to realize, Alex is very humble. They all are. He doesn't play a guitar solo, unless one is needed. And if you see, Different Strings fades out with an outro solo. And who doesn't wish that they went on for another few minutes.

Geddy's singing is what makes Rush...Rush. Even though I'm a drummer, it was his vocals that caught my attention when I first heard A Farewell to Kings. He has a three-octave range and his timbre is a perfect fit for the type of music they play.

  • @bobcarn
    @bobcarn Жыл бұрын

Geddy's voice is unusual. It has a higher pitch and has a different quality to it. Not a bad quality, just one that's different. And when faced with something different or unexpected, it's natural for it to be distracting and to not be sure how to take it. Once you get used to it, it's not unexpected or different anymore and you find that he actually has a very warm, friendly voice and can sing very well. It's just one of those quirks about Rush that makes them different. This song is a nice little ballad that gives you a chance to rest before the final opus. Alex does great work on this album, but so do Neil and Geddy. Neil's drumming is inspired through a lot of songs, Geddy's bass is top-notch (heck, Geddy's bass playing gets better and better with age), and Geddy's vocals are some of his best yet. He's really mastering his voice, and this album has more melodic vocals. They said it was this album that gave them the experience to make Moving Pictures, which is top-notch classic album and is on many top ten lists. I prefer this album a little more, but it's a close call. Tom Sawyer rightfully gets attention as their best song, but Spirit of Radio is such a freaking wonderful song! If one song can sum up all of Rush, it's that one.

  • @tencentwonders

Maybe the reason Alex is more noticeable IS that you've changed how you listen to Rush, based on last week's set of reactions. Another reason is maybe Alex just doing stuff that jumps out at your more on this record than on previous records. (It's my opinion that AFTK is the first record where Alex finally started stepped out of Page's shadow enough to sound like a unique player.) Whatever the reason, I think it's great you're connecting more with him. He does some cool stuff and is as strong an element in Rush sounding like Rush as are his band mates.

I think you’re responding to Alex’s guitar voice developing. It, along with Geddy’s voice, seem to have matured like 10 years in the span of time between AFTK and Permanent Waves. And the next album similarly shows evolution in sound and originality, as does Signals. Molting each time into a new form of the band. Crazy cool.

Justin, As an old guy, I've been a fan of Rush ever since I saw them live in 1976 for $6 at the Taylor County Coliseum in Abilene, TX. They were touring the show that became All The World's A Stage. It's always good to see someone listen to them with a "critical ear" and slowly discover just how talented they are, learn how many layers there are in their music and realize it takes more than just one listen to really grasp everything and appreciate the creativity. I'm very impressed how you will take time and share your honest feelings about each song. I'm also very impressed you are actually going through their discography! Alex's style is different on this album, begins the classic Rush sound. I loved his work on 2112, Passage to Bangkok, all Caress of Steel, By Tor ect- a harder, heavier tone often mixed w blues, or distortion. Permanent Waves to Grace under Pressure a "cleaner"? tone. Back to grittier rock on Counterparts to the heavy heavy tone on the Snakes..& Clockwork. They're all good but there is something that often does stand out more in the guitar in this period esp PW - P/G.

Great song, and criminally too short. I get why you identify this as an "Alex" record. If you go back, his parts on previous albums tended to be more just about the chords (with a pretty limited sound overall.) But starting here he starts really exploring arpeggiation, inversions, and a lot more color with his effects and technique. I think they all benefitted from the new studio and what newer technology had to offer. Plus Terry Brown seemed to up his game as well, finding fresh engineering tricks to give the whole album a brighter sheen.

Since I first heard PW back in Jan, 1980, I had wished Alex's solo at the end was longer. And I'm certain that most Rush fans agree. Now we're onto the other bookend song of the record, "Natural Science." The journey began with classic tune, "The Spirit of Radio" and ends with another foray into the nether regions (that's the only hint you'll get from me 😉). Peace! ✌

I always thought this song was written to give Neil a bit of a rest as they mostly performed it right after a drum solo.

😂 Of course! 😁 I swear I did a 🐲 Dungeons & Dragons Campaign at least once a month between 76-84... 🙄 Then I had to be an Adult. Hard to keep up Campaigns & Characters when you start working 9-5 is all's I'm saying! 🤗 So yeah, again with the Dragons! 🥰🐰

I can’t remember or if you said how far into the RUSH catalog this time around! I would definitely like you to at least go to the Signals album. 74-82 are called THE MUSICIANS-MUSICIAN part of RUSH’S career or as I call it: THE TERRY BROWN YEARS! My favorite period of RUSH all time.

Yep solo needed to be longer. Anyways next up: Natural Science. Best song on album IMO. First 2 minutes is slow and isn't perfect (imo) but the rest is perfection, as good as Rush gets, again IMO.

Rush has said this was a pivotal album for them, as they felt they had reached a new point in their ability to put it all together. While the next album is considered their best, they said “Moving Pictures” wouldn’t have been what it was without “Permanent Waves”. I’m not a musician. The early works, Xanadu, 2112, hemispheres album were special to me. This era was great too, before the keyboard took over.

Hugh Syme... rhymes with... Scene of the crime... close. Tastes like lime! Nope... too sublime. Maybe I can mime it. Hey Brother... got a dime? Let me spice it up... parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. It's an uphill climb... feel free to chime in.

For me personally, I think this record is the first record with this "sound/mix", very distinct instruments that blend together well. I think the previous albums had a more "muddy" mix/feel to them and this sounds bright....to me. I feel Perm waves, moving pics, Grace under pressure, signals, and some of Power Windows were my fav albums. My opinion is that with the "Hold your fire" album they moved into a new sound/direction which didn't appeal to me as much. Curious if you will have a similar reaction to those albums as well. I must say that there are some great songs in those later albums too, just the albums hit differently to me personally. As always love watching reactions to Rush!

Alex had more to give. Who faded out? I liked Hugh's contribution, but would have loved more as well. Completely agree Alex stands out more on this record. Just wait for Natural Science. Everyone is going off. Its going to be a big finish. See you tomorrow.

I think your noticing Alex more for a couple of reasons. 1: you're starting to realise, he's fucking brilliant. 2: his tone on this album is just exquisite. Moving Pictures ratchets it up - yet again !

When I was younger, like when this album came out, I didn't care that much for this song. Too slow. But as I've aged, and slowed down a little myself, I've come to appreciate it more.
