You can feel the push from Freddie - he wants this song to WORK. I get the feeling it's that club vibe and yearning for acceptance from the Queen audience. Wanting to win them over. Thx for going gentle on this Hot Space tune(:

Cool Cat is awesome! Freddie sings in falsetto the whole song. He plays the piano and John plays all other instruments.

If you give it a listen (Queen lyric video, not fan video), promise to crank up the volume for the bass line. It is FUN, a summer day, driving, music.

I really like this one. True, Freddie sells it, but he always sells every song. And I think the band really stepped up on this one. Excited to see which one is next. Cool Cat is cool!

I really like the live versions of these "dance" songs from Hot Space even though not typical Queen--they are fun. I like Cool Cat, Life is Real etc on the second side of the album better--no live versions though except for Under Pressure.

Freddie's singing is absolutely amazing on this material, Freddie could sing anything. I know you are not really into vocals, you are into the instruments, but this is really amazing singing. Very difficult.

I still love Hot Space, it was the first Queen album I ever heard and for me Queen WAS a funk band, before I got to know their earlier material and realize that they really weren't.. 🤣 But still its my second favorite funk-rock album after MJ's Thriller. MJ and Freddie were friends at the time and MJ even said once Hot Space had huge influence on Thriller. If an album inspires the best selling album of all time, it cannot be bad... right? 🙃

I’m truly surprised you didn’t like these performances! I thought they were great! Listen I actually like that they tried different stuff and didn’t stay in their lane. The reason I think he gave that disclaimer was that people had them stereotyped. I think it speaks to their talent that they did try different things and the style might be different but you can tell it’s Queen.

Freddie sells this masterpiece AND his band of brothers BUY it. Fantastic music making is why true Queen fans listen to their work. Hot Space grew to be a successful album. Reminder, already world-wide success of the "Black Category" of music made the entire world promptly in love with the Beatles.

I don't mind this song or this genre but you are right it is not what I think of when I think of Queen. Once I listened to the album a few times and got over my prejudices, I found it to be a very good album.

Agree with you completely ✌🏼 Don’t care about this song but … as a Queen fan I’m grateful for the good the bad and the ugly bc They Are Gone 😔 Milton Keynes is just about my favorite Queen concert. Thanks for doing Queen Live 😊

Queen played live 9 songs out of 11 from Hot Space, but unfortunately this is the only live video with only 4 of them with the exception of a live clip of Put Out The Fire (from 1982 japan)

Tbf it is only 3 songs at the concert. I think it is a nice contrast within the context of other songs. Nice energy and Freddie and John are clearly into it.

Ok, Ok .. Hot Space is not one my favorite Queen albums but after a lot of listening, I learned to appreciate Queen’s creativity! Yes, most of the songs are better live (like this, Action This Day, & Back Chat) .. Please check out SOUL BROTHER, one of my favorites off the Hot Space album.

Listen to the original and see how different it is. If they'd performed it like that it would have been terrible but Queen had the ability to make songs from an album way better performed live. As Freddie once said "If we were to perform our songs on stage the same way as on album then you may as well just put cardboard cutouts of us on stage" This live performance of Staying Power is awesome.

Their live performances were better than the album version, IMO of the songs from Hot Space. Also gotta remember that was early 1980's.

As we know, John really loved funk, & Mo-Town, etc & Freddie loved to sing everything. I think Hot Space would have been a superb Mercury-Deacon project. That would have let Roger & Brian off the hook as both disliked the sound. Some music requires more than a single listen to catch the flavor (except for a first time reaction! lol). Anyway, the Hot Space album grew on me. I like it now.

Roger and Brian hated the dance music stuff off that album. The songs they wrote were definitely the better ones. And of course Under Pressure was on it. Fun fact, they all considered John the best rhythm guitarist in the band. He actually played all the instruments on the last song Cool Cat.

Definitely better than the studio album...I just didn't get into Hot Space. The electronica stuff including the "Beverly Hills Cop" synth...just not for me. Yep, Justin, I agree...I'd rather listen to Parliament, Kool and the Gang or groups like Tower of Power. I was surprised by how tight Queen was with this performance, however.

i think you've touched on hot space enough. the works was a return to a more traditional queen style blended with modern (for then) music. far superior. I'm a huge queen fan and can't stand hot space

The "black category" term Freddie uses simply refers to funk & soul music. The reference comes about due to those styles having originated in African American communities and should not be taken offensively. "Body Language" doesn't get much love but it is worth listening to a live recording. I am not aware of any video. Thanks!

I don't dislike the album except a couple of songs and I own it, but it's at the bottom of their albums for me. Queen tried something new and it didn't work, they always have been a band that experimented that's why they're my favorite

I do not understand your reaction to "funk black". At the time nobody reacted to this. There was no intention to offend anyone. Mercury himself was an immigrant and gay. I am sure he took his share of prejudice. He simply refered to music with roots in african culture etc. He would obviously not used those words today.

Cool Cat and Back Chat are my favorites off this album and Staying Power at least has those guitar lines. I think Under Pressure is overrated and Body Language is abysmal. I remember when that came out as a single and it made me physically sick to hear it on the radio. Hyperbole? Maybe, but not much.
