If that’s true for Alex it makes it more curious as to why he deleted the second guitar solo. A few lines of lyrics were also dropped. For those reasons I prefer the studio track.

@@itsmedrooms6071 I love the studio track too. But I can understand why they tweaked it for live performances. It's a long song. They have a lot of long songs and by cutting a little bit out of a couple longer ones, they then have room to squeeze in another whole song. It's why things like Cygnus X-1 only gets partial playback.

Love love love this song!! It will always be in my top ten Rush songs. If I remember correctly I read in one of Neil's books Far and Away that on one tour he took a spill off his motorcycle and had to wear a brace on his elbow so I thing that is what is happening here. As for Alex, I love Lersxt in his leather pants!! 😍 I actually had a couple of pairs myself back in the day.

Always strange to see Neil playing traditional grip on old songs. But this was after he spent a long time relearning how to play under Fred Gruber. If I remember correctly, when Neil played in a Buddy Rich Tribute concert, he had an issue where he learned the song from a recorded track and then the song was played slightly differently live and it threw him off. He studied how to play jazz and then incorporated traditional grip for the entire Test For Echo album. Was a big deal. There are a few videos out there of Neil playing with the big band. One from long ago and then another years later. While I can't hear the difference much, the comments have lots of jazz drummers saying what a huge difference there was in his swing playing which means he continued to practice long after those tribute albums came out. And if you like big band jazz, both of the Burning for Buddy Tribute albums are a must listen Was the first time I ever heard Simon Phillips play and was blown away by him.

Neil was thrown off mainly because he was in front of the horn section and couldn't hear them (or so he said). I'm sure there was more to it, as you suggested. I was at that performance. It was great to see him stick his neck out like that, but he was quite stiff. He hooked up with Freddie after noting a huge improvement in Steve Smith's playing (which is weird to say, because Smith was always one of the greatest) - mainly the grace in his physical movements - and asking Steve what happened. Smith smiled and said, "Freddie."

Neil always had issues in the later tours. Between riding the motorcycle, playing three hours a night with that kind of power, and just plain getting older. On R40 tour he developed problems with his feet, and he could barely walk for part of the tour, yet he still played with full force for each show and still road the bike every day. Astonishing really.

Spot on comments. The Signals and earlier period of Rush has so much gold on every album (with NP). There are also a lot of great songs from the later albums. But, if you ask some random guy to name a Rush song, I guarantee it will be from Signals or earlier period. FYI - StickHits has a live version of Ghost of a Chance performed in Germany - 1992. Cheers from St Pete.

Don’t mean to brag but I saw them perform this song in 1980. Alex played it with an acoustic on a stand for the first part before playing the rest on the electric. It was epic just like this performance. The light show was less. There was a projector screen image like one was in a pipe near the ocean and it pulls away when the song gets heavier. I forget what happens throughout most of it but image comes back then smaller and expands at the conclusion of the song.

Hey Justin, if there is one thing I do enjoy about your reactions to Rush music is that you are not bullshitting. Perhaps, a lot of diehard Rush fans do not like that, but I find it very honest and sincere and that is how it should be. Now, recalling your initial reactions to Rush, you did not seem to be very fond of Geddy’s voice.....it is strange and unique, but somehow, it goes with their complex music so perfectly, no one else would fit in that spot. This precise reaction of yours, in particular, I enjoyed the most since it was so clear how much you dig this tune, during your studio reaction and then in this masterful performance. I have to agree with you that this is top level and nothing even comes close. This is the band that shaped my life and my music likes since one night, back in 1981, in Houston. I am from Venezuela and after returning to my country, I knew I brought back with me my most precious gift, after my sons, Rush’s music and lyrics.....what a gift from Neil, Alex and Geddy. Ever since, I have not been able to let it go and, frankly, I do not want to....I asked my sons to play Xanadu, Exit Stage Left, during my memorial.....I imagine that is how going to the other side sounds like......

Thanks Luis! Yeah I didn't get into Rush when I was younger cause I didn't like Geddy's voice... it's one of the interesting parts of this whole journey. Neil usually played through injuries. Well documented that he had tennis elbow, arthritis in his feet and knees. They did an interview talking about how he got trench foot so bad on one tour from motorcycle riding in the rain for 3 days that he could hardly walk. but he played every night. Geddy would get tendonitis in his fingers. Alex had arthritis so bad (still does) that he had to modify how he plays. Great job and this is one of my favorite songs they do live.

I was at this show...the full 2112 being performed was the talk of this tour...but them pulling this out was the coolest thing - and it being 1997, with so much less internet information spread, it was an actual surprise. At that point I never would have thought I'd get to see them play this, let alone nail it so hard.

Guess I was ahead of the times. I knew the whole set list from the national midnight star email list/newsgroup in 96 for the first leg of the tour, and of course the 97 leg too. So I also knew beforehand that they edited out the art as expressions verse. Internet'ng since 95. Had it been around a few years prior I would have caught the counterparts tour, I knew they were playing that day right down the street from our rehearsal studio, but figured it would be sold out so I didn't bother. Later to find out that I probably would have gotten very good seats at the box office because they used to release good seats day of show. So test for echo ended up being my first time and my last time was their last time as well, literally.

    J. Neil's body was showing the effects of years of touring. If memory serves, he had issues with his back, tendonitis in his shoulders and elbow (maybe his knees too). For those of us medical types, the brace is for lateral epicondylitis and redistributes forces away from the elbow attachment. When he was asked about his injuries, he said, (I paraphrase) If I played for the Stones, I could play indefinitely. funny but probably true. NS, one of my fav.s for sure! and remember, Rush were unlikely Rock Stars, so leather pants were standard apparel...but much more natural on Steven Tyler. lol. If" The most endangered species, the honest man Will still survive annihilation" doesn't lift you up? Not sure what might.....Great reaction, J.

Preach it Brother! Even if it's to the choir. Can I tell you that moving forward in the discography you will find something "Rock Masters" like as Permanent Waves or other albums of that era? I can emphatically say YES, personally, but I cannot promise you will agree. But, it's all better than the last three albums you covered. And Geddie generally still sounds as good live for about another decade after '97. As to Alex's leather pants, I think I get your vibe, and I agree 90%. Generally no real man's man should ever wear them. But, there are two occasions where I not only find leather pants acceptable, but cool. One, if you are a motorcyclist in a colder climate like Neil Peart (but not a "Poser" weekend warrior type). Two, if you are among the greatest guitarists in the world, while playing in concert (except if it's part of an entire leather costume like KISS). I think Alex looks cool in the leather pants. This also includes these World Class guitarists I've seen wearing them on stage: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joe Satrioni, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page.

One of Rush's very best tracks played in what I feel was their best decade for live performance. That's not to say that they weren't great live in the 70s 80s 00s and 10s because they were, it's just that for me the 90s was their peak.

Great reaction Justin. I prefer the versions on later tours. Live in Rio and Snakes and Arrows. Better audio quality. Geddys Jazz bass sounds brilliant on the Snakes and Arrows version. Check it out. 👍

Can't argue with you on that "nothing comes close to this"😆 I tell ya, something happens when they perform live. Even songs that are kinda "meh" on albums are so much better live. It was Mystic Rythms for me. To each his own. Take care ✌️

Yeah, your mind would have been blown to see them live. And yeah people, humans make mistakes, F all the crap you got, it is what it is and whatever. I’m glad you went through with the way it came out, that’s part of your no BS vibe. I thought it was hilarious when you pinned your wife. She was not having any of it though. 😂😂😂 I hope someone does a request for the Classic Albums videos for 2112 and Moving Pictures. About 53 minutes each. I think I have two DVD’s. Maybe I’ll send you a copy. Take care and be well 😊

Whenever I hear this song live I always wonder why they deleted the second guitar solo. Other than that, it’s great of course; arguably from one of the best albums if not the best album Rush ever made.

And they repeat the "Wheels within wheels..." part, which was always odd. I wondered if it was to give someone off stage time to set up a sequence or lighting cue or something. But yeah, Alex's second solo is for me an integral part of the song. It's got tons of character that fits in with that whole march section.

The first two songs off "Test for Echo" are "Test for Echo" and "Driven" and for me are as strong of an album opener as anything they have done. For me, they drive hard not unlike "Natural Science".

Always great to see them live in different points in time, great song! Maybe during this break or when you finish Test for Echo check out 2112 from that tour, I believe it is the last time they played all 7 parts - kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJ6Wl9WRepfJn7A.html. Sounds like Alex is an octave lower or something but it just sounds a lot heavier, not sure what bass Geddy is playing but it growls also.
