They were definitely hitting their stride on this album. While a lot of what they did before this had more experimental feel to it (not raw, just that they were still perfecting their craft). Feels like here is where they settled in...

Today's republican Party in America seems to be hell bent on repeating Nazi Germany. The red hats are the new white hoods. Republicans are now inviting Fascist/Racist leaders to their conventions who advocate for all out racism and non-mixture of different races. Just surreal how far America has fallen. Make America Great Again really means take America back to the dark ages.

For me Rush's lyrics have always been just as important as the music. They are intertwined together and over the past 4 decades became the storyboard of my life. The lyrics on Entre Nous and Different Strings really speak to me in a way that I never skipped them. Lyrics, music...it's all genius!

Hello, Justin. I do not even think that Rush had any idea of how loved and appreciated they were outside USA, Canada and England. I guess they were in shock when they played in Brazil. I am from Venezuela (South America), however, I got to know about Rush during my university days in Houston. That day, when I first listened to their awesome music, is carved in my brain as if it happened yesterday. I am 60 and since then, 1981, I have not been able to let go of these genioses who, frankly, changed the way I look at life and music. It is funny how something like this can affect you and make you percive things in a totatly different perspective. Neil`s lyrics are so descriptive and clarifying that they just seem to open that lid in your brain, setting you up for stories and realities of life that were never seen the way he saw and felt them. Their music has always a surprise for the listener, unexpected changes, powerful cords, but also mellow sounds that capture you in ways no other band ever had, at least for me. Next is moving pictures...... one hell of a ride you are in for, although you have heard most of their songs, except, as you mentioned, Witch Hunt and Vital signs. Now, I suggest you check their lyrics......I am still trying to figure out Vital Signs.....Neil's brain was something no other song writer had and I dare to say, no other will ever have. I assume you will also check Signals.... love that record......different, but full of new stuff, great lyrics and more. I must confess, when I started checking your reactions, I felt like you did not really want to do Rush.....after your opinion on Permanent Waves, I understood you finally got it.....you were/are hooked....Enjoy the ride, Justin....I have been doing it for over 40 years.

Now that you've woken up to Alex, lol, now definitely go back to the previous albums and you'll hear he did a lot on those too! It may be his tone on Permanent Waves that is sticking out to you, and the guitar sounds high in the mix, which may explain why you're noticing more of him on this album

You're more right than you know. "Here's Rush." They spent their time at Morin-Heights not just recording, but forging lifelong friendships. Studio during the day, volleyball under the lights at night...Much did happen in the recording process, recording this album, and three others after. Living in the guest house there, and having the peace to create, which they did. So you nailed it, "Here's Rush." (Should be a T-Shirt) lol

@@iamhere9805 With Rush, esp lyrically, I find "new" themes, or see different meanings & interpretations I'd not before, even after 40 yrs. But when you tap into the human psyche as Neil often did & thoughtfully reflect those thoughts, the ideas are universal & open to growth and further insight. Esp when presented as objective observation w/o any or much judgment. It allows the listener to easily identify w that experience of human condition in themselves & the world easier and for it to grow w them as well. Not to be to cute abt it, but I think " it leaves room for you and I to grow." in development of the themes. Rather than be preached to as most lyricist esp in modern times seem to often do.

There is another reactor I watch who is a drummer and he watched the live drum cam version and was blown away by Neil on this song. That fill in the middle that you commented on, he kept rewinding to watch what was actually going on. This is one song you really need to watch live. It really shines their playing abilities. Next up, arguably their “best” album which you’ve probably already heard. Will be interesting to get your take on the camera eye as that song was one fans wanted played live for decades and Rush always said no because they had lost interest in it. They finally played it again towards the end of their touring. It’s not my favorite song so I’m probably in the minority. Edit**** forgot you did camera eye already. Need to rewatch and see what you said. I’ll add this, Alex continues as a leading instrument on moving pictures. But then it’s a major major major major major shift on signals. I still think it’s some of his best work when you really listen to what he has to do on the album but synths and drums are the leaders on signals.

At this point, Rush is beginning to reach critical mass and leaving most rock bands behind them and now in the company of a small handful of bands like Yes and Pink Floyd. Despite a growing number of critics and detractors, the unstoppable locomotive that is Rush is gaining momentum and a following that stands today. Great review sir! One of the best in a sea of Rush reactions.

My first ever Rush album, I was blown away by all 3 of them, then quickly bought up their back catalogue. Was a bit misty eyed when I finally got to hear Natural Science played live in 2002 and on a couple of later tours. The visuals were so cool too.

Yeah I agree Neil is a beast on this one, then again on so many others. Alex went nuts on this one with solos. He's horribly underrated. But you haven't got to Moving Pictures yet, it has Tom Sawyer and other good ones. Although PW may remain your fav. needless to say. My word, this song starts so quiet but by the end it's a frenzy. I think it's right up there for most Rush fans. I don't want to brag, but I'm a master needle dropper. 😁

I remember when this record came out. Yes it spread by word of mouth. A lot of kids weren't quite old enough to remember 2112 (1976), and the two following albums didn't get as much attention. We middle school kids discovered the older records through Permanent Waves. Then Moving Pictures came out and our heads exploded.

I love it too, but not quite as much as La Villa. To me, these songs are, in a way, counterparts; both capricious in their structure, and both having recurring motifs that bind them together nicely. Yes, I'm aware that one has lyrics and one doesn't. Although that changed when Alex did one of his La Villa rants. So there's that. 😎

Definitely one of my favorite RUSH songs all time! Neil’s lyrics, Alex’s playing and Geddy’s vocals and the real highlight: ALL THE TIME SIGNATURES!!! There's actually only one really odd-time part in this ("A Quantum Leap Forward"). The strummed intro is in simple 4/4, as is the next section ("Wheels within wheels") though it's broken into a 16 eighth-note pattern (3-3-3-3-4). Then there's the part in 7/8 ("A Quantum Leap Forward") where there's a 4/8 measure inserted after the first eight repetitions of this main 7/8 motif, and an additional 7/8 measure inserted after the second eight repetitions. Then it's back to a straight 4/4. Then the 7/8 comes back in the same with (with the inserts as described). The part under the guitar solo is in straight 4/4. As it ends it goes back to the same 3-3-3-4 thing that's felt as straight 4/4, and same for the repeat of the "wheels within wheels" verse. The march following that is in straight 4/4 (tempo slows for this live version, not on the studio version). The "Science like nature must also be tamed" section remains in straight 4/4 but is highly syncopated. And It stays in 4/4 for the whole last verse section ("wave after wave") until the end of the song with a ritardo at the end.

The album Permanent Waves takes its title from this song. An amazing song also rarely played live. Along with Jacobs Ladder, this is the other longer song on Permanent Waves that feels "epic." I used to like Jacobs Ladder more but for many years now Natural Science has been my favorite on the album even surpassing Spirit of Radio and Freewill. Natural Science was played live from 1980-1981 then brought back on the 96/97 and 2002 tours. But the live version I have from a 1980 bootleg is better that the later recordings. While PeW begins to incorporate more shorter radio friendly songs, Rush is still good for an epic or two. This trend will continue with The Camera Eye on the next album. Their last real “epic/longer” track.

Thanks. I enjoyed this video a lot. This song is a masterpiece imo. If you like jazz music and have listened to Dave Brubeck you may have noticed this song was influenced by Blue Rondo a la Turk from theTake Five album. I feel your comments are spot on due to the fact you are a musician, a bass player. I also dislike Cinderella Man not because of the individual playing which is great but I got the sense that it's a mess from a compositional point of view. But Permanent Waves is a well rounded concised album with no flaws. Seems to me they mastered the art of writing songs in this record. And yes, Alex shines here.

During an interview Geedy Lee, choose "Moving Pictures" as the best Rush album, but he also said that "Moving Pictures" could not happen without "Permanent Waves". So Following the comment on the video for a side two to "Permanent Waves" , i made the joke that's "Moving Pictures", i would not dare, say a album of Rush is the side two for the other, even when they actually do it Like "Farewell to Kings" to "Hemispheres", With Cygnus X-1 Book one, Cygnus X-1 Book two:Hemispheres.

It's really hard to describe what it was like listening to Rush growing up in near Toronto, in the Great White North (Canada)& it's so cool to see someone appreciating music that has partly played like a soundtrack in my life. I'm suddenly reminded by her recent death, when ON-J was getting the world 'Physical and singing her own 'Xanadu', yet Rush went and did that right there.

Back when I was a teen in the 70s, we would spin entire albums (or 8-track tapes). If the lyric sheets were available, we would hold them and follow along. So, when you say that "No one reads the lyrics on a first listen,'" I beg to differ. Rush is one of those bands whose lyrics are just as important as the music. If I remember correctly, "Natural Science" was written in the studio when the rest of PW was completed. I may be wrong, but I believe that Rush would save a place for a final song so they could be caught up in the moment. They did this often. ✌❤

Totally enjoyed your reaction to this! Alex has said this is one of his favs to play live!! I wanted to ask you… you never seem to specifically mention the time signatures… are you able to count that shit off in your head? I’ve tried and I just can’t keep up..LOL! But I’m just an ole lady rocker.. not a musician! (I do pretty good air drums)…LMAO! In Hemispheres it seems to me Geddy and Neil “pushing” a lot of the changes, but on this album, Alex had joined in on that, and seems to be pushing the song into the changes. Would that be accurate? Well, so glad you loved this album!! Thanks again for doing this!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!

I dont care about time signatures i care about PHRASING. The melodic phrase, the rhythmic phrase. Focus on that and theres no need to count! Of course yes I can break it down if I need to but Rush is so melodic you hear the phrase and get it.

Such a killer album...I knew Alex would eventually win you over 😉 This album encapsulates all they are up to this point. In the future they explore themselves in very surprising (and sometimes unfortunate) ways. Even so, I'm a fan that loves and appreciates the genius of each phase of their career. I marvel that they never identified a winning formula and repeated it over and over. I think the loyal Rush Army helped give them the confidence to do whatever they wanted - they trusted we would be there for them when the industry wasn't. Thank you for this journey!
