Murder in Cottage Country - The Fifth Estate

It's a dark tale of people vanishing, mystery, and suspicion of murder: Nearly two decades ago in a secluded part of Ontario's cottage country, four elderly people disappeared without a trace. Police spent years searching for bodies, clues and answers. To this day, the seniors have never been found -- and no one has been held accountable for their disappearance.
Now, in a joint investigation with The Walrus magazine, The Fifth Estate uncovers long-secret police documents and new details about the people who went missing, the suspects police had in their sights and clues to what may have happened.

Oh dear God, my dad once worked with Joan (the cat lady) years ago; she was such a sweet woman and her cats were her life. As a child a stray cat gave birth to a litter of kittens in my backyard. My dad got ahold of Joan and she came to collect them - to take care of them. I was promised that I could one day visit the cats but unfortunately it never happened. So sad that I hear her name again after almost 35 years only to find out that she was murdered. God rest your soul Joan, thanks for taking my kittens into your care.

The fact is that non-religious people EXPECT religious people to be holy or saint-like when the fact is we are all human and some people simply don’t have a conscience regardless of what they project outwardly. There are evil people who use religion to convince others they are good, just as there are nurses, doctors, parents, and others in positions that engender trust in order to use it as a shield.

The conditions they had the 'cat lady' living in robbing her of her only income of $700 is enough to prosecute those scum bags for elder neglect. I can't believe these people get to go on w their lives considering their past of being repeat offenders and the asinine things they've done and been suspended of doing.

How do you steal from elderly , have 4 disappear from your property, not report that , and serve no jail time? How were they not charged for collecting 700 rent for open shed? This is nuts

Saddest part of this is that most of the worst offences against other people have been, in my experience, perpetrated by those claiming to be devout Christians.

In the U.S. with that much circumstantial evidence, body or no body they would be arrested and tried for murder! I've seen murder cases with no body get a conviction on less evidence. Sad story

xisobelx373 ~ "technically no body-no conviction" is simply untrue. There is a myriad of solid murder convictions resulting from no body found. - Perry Marche--Kat Rutan--E.P. Tomilson--Richard Crafts--Tom Capano--The Hans Reiser Affair-- just to cite a few.......

That's because its Canada. Forget the murders, with this many violations of the law in the USA you would have received a life sentence a long time ago.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Just want to add that, even with ALL the sinister information the police do know about, nothing has been accomplished and no one held accountable. I truly wonder if they would have done anything to help, even if people called in to report what they saw. But, yes, especially the woman who saw her handing a pile of money to that guy & knew that she never got her tax return, she should have made a report. They know it now, and not a thing has come of it though.
