My Mom was murdered. It's a cold case. My heart goes out to the two brothers. There's no such thing as closure but justice is important.

That photo of the killer when he is young is so disturbing. He looks as light hearted and innocent as the victim's photos. As if he's just a happy person with no darkness instead of a cold blooded killer. What a waste of their lives.

I'm so happy for you guys. I have a protective older sister. She has been a pillar in my 64 years on this earth. She looms large in my life even today. Hearing you talk about Erin, my Debbie comes to mind. I know Erin would be so proud of you three. Your family is beautiful. Handsome men.

I lost a child to a drunk driver so I know pain but I can not imagine the pain of knowing that a family member has been taken in this horrific fashion and not knowing who the killer is. We all need a brother like this!!!

I love the Fifth Estate. We used to have some good investigative programs like Dateline in the USA, but most have gone completely downhill in objectivity and now too sensationalistic and just dreadful to watch altogether.

I don't know if I could be a homicide detective but those of you who choose this profession, my respect and reverence to you. Thank you for bringing criminals to justice and closure to loved ones.

Beware. "Dateline" and others like it in the USA started out well but have devolved into only "crime already solved, narrated slowly to stretch it to a full hour (with many commercials)". It's bad but successful such that "60 Minutes" (a program that remains good in Australia) has followed "Dateline" down the sewer and completely ignored corporate crime to again; discuss cases where someone is already in prison. The point is; It distracts the public.

The Toronto police did not solve the case. A lab in Texas did and then taught them about genetic DNA.

It is so heart-wrenching what happened to these women 40 years ago. That the police never gave up is wonderful and the brothers never gave up seeking the answer. It took 40 years but the killer was found. God Bless these families

Not only is it amazing that genealogy is assisting in solving so many cold cases, but to give credit where it is due, to those investigators that so many years ago, had the foresight to gather evidence in the hope that one day the technology would catch up. Unfortunately that is not the situation with all cold cases, however I am pleasantly surprised how often it does. I am so pleased for the families, and hopefully now the souls of the deceased can be at full rest. 🕊

There has to be DNA evidence. As long as that is present and confirmed as being from a perpetrator, then all cold cases could potentially be solved.

I'm very glad to see these families receive some measure of justice after all the years. As someone who had three family members murdered 44 years ago, with no arrests in all that time, I completely understand their pain and suffering.

Finally, Susan Tice and Erin Gilmore got justice as well as their families. The perpetrator was caught after 39 years which is a long time waiting for the families having a murderer roaming free. DNA and the Genealogy science are good tools now to apprehend criminals. And as time goes by, there will be more advanced science and technology to apprehend criminals quicker .

The good thing too is we can use the same tech to catch more current criminals now. No more getting 39 years to wait around. Justice always waits when necessary, but now it can pounce!

Kudos to TPS Officers who worked on the case. "The Professionals"!

High marks to Erin's family, and to the detectives of the Toronto police service, for never giving up.

The pain is unbearable, what a great loss, what a loving family. DNA cannot bring people back, but it can at least put some perpetrators behind bars.

So this guy has roamed free for almost 40 years and he gets a media ban on information that could lead to other crimes he's committed? He will never have to feel the pain and horror he perpetrated on his victims. His rights as a cold blooded murderer should never, ever be allowed to interfere IN ANY WAY with this or any investigation he may be involved in. The families have suffered enough.

It’s probably to protect otter members of his family after all this time. The lack of a media ban led to Bernardo victims going through unnecessary suffering. A media ban doesn’t mean there aren’t investigations. The name is known so anyone who has had information was able to come forward.

I have to wonder how many women and girls this monster has "disappeared without a trace" in his lifetime.

Seeing the killer carry a wide smile after all that he did is so haunting my goodness 😢

I live in Puerto Rico. I love this show. Hope that one day, this technology be used for cold cases here. I admire the absolute dedication of all cold cases detectives. These two families needed justice. At last, after so many years of waiting, it has arrived. May both both families find peace in their hearts. May both victims finally rest in peace.

I wish I had a brother who cared half so much about me. Glad he finally had some small degree of justice.

I can't imagine having to live with this tragedy. I'm happy for this family. But now trying to convict this person is still a long way off. I hope there is a total completion and conviction of this guy.

I just hope laws don’t get changed to prevent it. While I totally agree with privacy, apparently European privacy laws don’t allow genetic genealogy from being used to solve cases. I’d hate for that to be the case in North America

Othram , Nonolabs and Genetic phenotyping ( getting a physical image of their facial features from available DNA) have been essential in solving many, many cases now. Nanolabs even has some of the cases on their website. Well done to all those that helped to solve these cases.

"Truth always comes to light" Unfortunately I dare to say it doesn´t. This case was exceptional. There are hundrets of thousands of people missing in US as we speak. Many will be found, in a way or another, but many won´t. Praise the science, do not try to prevent its development. It works, unlike some other "methods".

I love these cold cases being solved by forensic genealogy all over the world. Killers still alive, should be very nervous!

A well put together documentary, thank you.

I hope that one day someone will write a book about this case that will be as compelling as the book about the Golden State Killer was- "I'll Be Gone in the Dark- The Hunt for the Golden State Killer" by Michelle McNamara (2018). The uses and abuses of public shared ancestry web sites is always open to discussion. But, equally as compelling, are the advances in the research of DNA technology. Los Angeles alone has 10,000! unsolved cold cases. We have 700 cases here in Ontario. Could Christine Jessop's killer have been found earlier? Would the killer of Erin Gilmour and Susan Tice in 1983 have been brought to justice earlier? I was planning to move to Toronto in 1984, and the rapes and murders of single women in some of my old stomping grounds in 1983 really gave me pause for thought! We are never going to be able to totally eliminate these types of crimes. But, DNA technology can give us the tools to better identify suspects. This reporting by The Fifth Estate was very well done.

The cousin wrote a book

In case anyone wants an update, the suspect recently plead guilty to the charges. He will be sentenced in December.

UNIMAGINABLE PAIN THIS FAMILY HAS ENDURED BY THE HANDS OF A KILLER!! GOD BLESS THIS FAMILY.

It gets so tiring hearing how far our justice system goes to protect criminals. Im so glad DNA broke this open!

i recognize the releif the brothers felt after the arrest. We need to have criminals face justice and not just release them. These brothers can get on with their lives finally. sadly their mother died with out knowing. She suffered so much.

I'm so sorry for your loss. That close to the holidays is awfully terrible. A loss in our own family, just before Thanksgiving hurts us every year. Your case has a criminal. Ours was a surgery, failure in recovery. Not the same thing, I know. Very sorry for your loss.

Wow. SO glad, SO thankful & joyous over this! This family, her family, needs some rest & peace. I really feel for them. Also I know how it is to have an event, a tragic event, shape the rest of your life. Peace and comfort to them 💕💕💕 Many many thanks to the detectives you're true heros! Lastly, I hope he gets the death sentence. No more generations of criminals in society, get rid of them for good, get them out!

What a devoted brother/s and Investigative team!

I got my DNA done for this reason I thought you just never know. I found out the man that I thought was my father was not my father There are no secrets with DNA.I do not want to dig deeper to who he is but my reason was when I read about all the cold case file being solved I thought you just never know.

@@SamStone1964 not at all I actual was not sure I saw someone that was a half sibling that I did not know I spoke to them on ancestry was like why is this person a half sibling. got my sister to do her DNA and found out she was my half sister and a cousin was her cousin but had no connection to me. Ancestry is very cool I could go back 3 generations on my mothers side before I even did it gives you so much information.

This story was well done and my applause goes to the families who persevered. I happened to come across this video while working on my computer. I wanted to listen to a crime drama which helps keep me focused. After watching the beginning warning of content I randomly clicked on the timeline to get an idea of the content. To my surprise I clicked on the exact moment two guy are carrying out the body of Erin Gilmour. The guy with the large amount of red hair, is me. I was shocked. Back in the day I worked for a company that was contracted to remove human remains. Sadly I don't remember Erin's case but I am so very happy that the killer was caught. Well done detectives!!
