The Mormon church in Canada: Where did more than $1 billion go? - The Fifth Estate

Our investigation reveals more than $1 billion raised by the Mormon church in Canada has been funnelled to the U.S. rather than going to charitable works in this country. We hear from former members in Canada and elsewhere who say concerns about how money is spent have led them to leave the church.

@@raptman5425 so the idea of atonement and how it fits into our lives and can improve our capacity to act forthrightly is really beneficial when the person has internalized that idea for him or her self. Whatever mistakes we have made are already atoned, so there is no need to hang onto them or feel debilitating shame. As an atheist, I can see the value in that lesson, and it largely parallels effective psychotherapy. But it doesn't have to be historically real, I don't need to pretend there's an afterlife, and I don't need to pay a lifetime tax in order to learn this. It seems like the Mormon church is massively overcharging for pretty common wisdom that has underpinned Western ideals for 2000 years.

One of the big differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions is that it is a lay church. People volunteer thier time. Even the President of the church is not paid. He had a long career as a heart surgeon before joining the leadership. This allows for more money to be put into serving others. Things like the welfare system (ranches, orchards, processing plants), education (universities, online degrees, training & practicums) and of course humanitarian projects. The church gave over 1 billion to humanitarian aid in 2023 alone. The church covers overhead so 100% of donations go to the projects.

It is, by it's declaration of exemption expressing favouritism towards religions. Any organization sustained by profit should be responsible for supporting the very people it serves. Paying back into the system as regulated by taxation is a responsibility all businesses share and religion hides behind it's cloak of spiritualism and tries to obfuscate it's profits. RC, LDS and nearly all faith-based religions build huge temples/churches/synagogues, shopping concourses, own planes and much real-estate. All of which from the proceeds of tithing. Apparently Mathew 21:12 applies only if it's not the church which profits from it. Otherwise it's ok...I see...do the words double-standards seem appropriate here. I think it does by geezus!

I guess you know exactly everything about the disbursement of the sacred funds the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints receives and how it is applied, do you believe if you are part of an organization that welfare funds are received by donors that it is there to help its parishioner’s who participate in the program. That the church is the biggest proponent of education and helps those members of the church with discounted tuition as part of the program, just like state and out of state students where there is a separate rate respectively. Do you realize where the church grows in population that buildings are built mortgage free to house the saints congregating in those areas, to provide a place of worship. Everything takes money and it is the faith of those members who pay tithings that these wonderful blessings are expended to facilitate the growth. I think you are stuck with your prejudices and are judging very immaturely and without the full scope of the manner of stewardship over these sacred funds how it all works together. All this show has done is take bitter hurt people who know full well the commitment these members make, and target the church based on people who have nothing better than to badger the good name of this religion. Dig deeper talk to a leader in the church and give fair time to address these questions. The hearts of these members are good, kind generous in so many ways. This show is just looking to take advantage of the hate filled world and collect their own filthy lucre in the name of entertainment.

We need a true separation between church and state. Tax-exempt status should not be given to any church (cult) that advocates and teaches doctrines that have no basis in fact or reality. We should defund all of these institutions by making them pay the same taxes as any other corporation. This is important at this point in time because we are facing a mass extinction event that is, in large part, the result of doctrines that define human beings as a privileged species that is above all other species and which is destined to rule, and dominate all other life forms. This view forms the basis of our culture and it is the product of predatory religious practices that are destroying the ecology upon which all of us depend.

It's never been a secret that tithing money is used to supplement university education at BYU. I, as a Canadian, obtained my bachelor's from one of the smaller campuses and was often reminded that my low tuition was only due to the sacrifice and tithes of others. Tithing supplements the education of those from around the world who pay as little as $100 US per year to obtain a university degree (including housing, food, courses, and insurance). A large portion of the land owned is orchards, ranches, and farms in the US that provide food for the churches' welfare system. These items are shared with those both in Canada and around the world. I'm disappointed no mention of the bishops' storehouses in Canada not mentioned. Other land holdings included those for chapels, temples, university campuses, historical sites, family camping sites etc.

From 1986 to 2019, I served in five bishoprics and two stake presidencies in Saskatchewan. Like any congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one of our key responsibilities was to care for those in need. We were not perfect, but I was impressed with the leaders' and members' effectiveness. We used a structured and principled approach to: 1) serve and minister to individuals, families, and communities (including those who are not of our faith), 2) share our personal and Church resources with those in need, and 3) help others become self-reliant through education, employment, and managing their personal finances. We did our best to fulfill this complex, sensitive, and nuanced work and the Lord blessed us to help many people.

My husband is from El Salvador, in Central America. We have known for years that the Mormon church is owner of one of the most valuable pieces of property there, a sprawling ranch on the shore of Lake Ilopango that is surrounded by high walls and is very secretive. You don't see the Church there open the gate to host activities for children or help the poor. The land just is in a state of holding. It would be worth many millions of dollars, that ranch, in my estimation.

I am a partially disabled 70+ year old senior in the USA. I recently joined the LDS church. But to my astonishment, when I started asking questions from my better than usual Bible background and quoting scripture in support, I have been badmouthed and gossiped about from multiple male and female leaders in my “ward”. I’ve not been to church for over a year, and have texted the missionaries that “I feel so unwelcome due to repeated negative criticisms and false allegations against me, that I don’t want to step foot inside the church!” I’ve heard not another word from any of them. I am heartbroken and stunned at what appears to be a pattern of prohibitions against women speaking up or questioning ANYTHING, especially those who are widowed or unmarried! And prior to excommunication, there seems to be an accepted practice of a communication blackout and cruel shunning! When I consider the stories about Jesus’ behavior and patience and words found in the Bible, I just feel like crying for “time and eternity” at the rampant mistreatment of those “others”, at the hands of these who claim to be the “restored” disciples of Jesus Christ!

You should also know that LDS Church owned businesses do pay all state and federal taxes that are required. I would think you would be more concerned about charitable donations going to people / leaders who use it to provide themselves with a lavish lifestyle rather than for church purposes and humanitarian aid. Those type of financial abuses by leaders doesnt happen with the LDS Church. If it did, believe me you would have heard about it as part of this CBC hit piece. I would suggest you worry more about your own donations to charity (you do make them dont you?) and less about what orgainizations other people chose to donate to.

It's been two years since the "whistleblower guy" did his expose in the US, but I have read about no Federal lawsuits, no indictments, no IRS anything. Or what about the Canada Revenue Agency? Overwhelming affections that may have sexual intimacy variety are best done in private, and the best to display it is only with your partner in a room where nobody needs to witness it. Who cares if random people on the internet attack the Church? It's not your job to defend it with petty remarks and insults. Rather, the only viable defense of the Church is to be kind and charitable and to be an example that shows others what the Church truly is. I urge you to think on this and pray about it. I'm not saying it to antagonize you, and I'm sorry if some of my other replies to you were antagonistic. But genuinely think about it, because I know the gospel of the Church and I know this isn't in line with it, so for your sake (according to your own beliefs) please consider what I've said.

The Fifth Estate - I grew up in Southern Alberta (I am NOT LDS), and dated a Mormon Girl who lived just outside of Cardston. Asked to go to "church", I was highly suspect of the devotion of members. Everything seemed way over the top. The constant 10% MANDATORY tithing struck me as anything but charitable. The amount of pressure to make sure you are following your tithing is relentless. Of note - LDS friends who went on two year mandatory church missions, are sent to their locations based on wealth. I've seen this enough on multiple occasions to have formed that theory, and realize it isn't by coincidence. "He" isn't the motivator, money is.
