Shafia family murders : House of Shafia (2012) - the fifth estate

A father, a mother and a brother stand convicted of the first-degree murders of four women found drowned in a submerged car in a Kingston, Ont. canal -- the so-called "honour killing" that has shocked a nation. But so many questions still remain.
How were three young women and their stepmother held as virtual captives in their own home in a country that prides itself on protecting women and children? How did police and social workers -- highly trained to recognize vulnerable people in potential danger -- not pick up and act on the warning signs that were so obvious to teachers, relatives and friends?
Family and friends break their silence for the first time and reveal what life was like under the iron-fisted rule of a domineering father whose word was law; with a brother who was his eyes, ears and accomplice; and with a mother whose indifference to her daughters' pleas and whose willingness to be a partner in their murders has shocked so many Canadians.
With exclusive interviews, we'll hear from those close enough to know what was going on: relatives who feared for the girls' safety; teachers at their school who knew there was trouble at home; and the two young men who dared to have feelings for the Shafia sisters, but who in the end could not save them.

@@dollytobing4576 op's comment said nothing about religion. But, in the mind of the father it was religon as barbaric and horrible as the act was. Most religions have some of the same in its history, even the bible condoned killing by stoning women in the old testament. Why should someone should forget their culture if they move to another country. Abide & respect the law of the land? Yes. Adapt? Yes. But, change who they are because its different and they're somewhere new? Nah. Thats silly, especially here in the states cause you have different types of culture depending on region, race, and ethnicity, so why would you want someone to forget part of who they are?

He better be. They ought to mail him a skirt sometime. I mean, prison ain't a nice place. It's not like what the Byers family said about Jessie Misskelley Jr. when he was found guilty of having murdered their son, Christopher, along with 2 other boys (Michael Moore and Stevie Branch), back in 1993 in Arkansas. Misskelley's confession was a false confession because he has a low IQ, within the 60s and 70s, he was interrogated by the West Memphis Police Dept. for hours, and composed a statement as though he were actually at Robin Hood Hills, committing the crime, along with two other friends, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols, but none of those statements he gave matched. However, that's what got these three young men, known as the West Memphis Three, convicted, which put Echols on death row. [Fact: The West Memphis 3 are actually innocent, yet they were freed 18 yrs. later, due to an Alford plea, which allows them to plead guilty while maintaining their innocence]. The guy who actually did it is still walking free! For Hamed, however, he's no saint whatsoever. He's just trying to worm his way out, so he can find someone to blame and not take any responsibility for what he did (or for what actually happened). He's just as responsible as his parents are for what happened to his sisters and Rona. He used the Lexus daddy got to nudge the Nissan Sentra that Rona and the Shafia sisters were in, right into the lake, in Kingston, Ont., killing them. Then, he drove 300 km away, to Montreal, to stage an accident - reporting it to police. He wouldn't tell Ammar where Zaynab is, because he knows she's dead - he just wasn't interested in letting him know. How much cruel can he be? We also know Zaynab feared her family, let alone, her father and brother. She wanted as much protection from them as possible by hiding in a shelter. She shouldn't have gone back to her parents' house for that 'wedding', because it was a trick to bring her home [so they'd plan on killing her]. Plus, Sahar, who was 17, much more could've been done to not only save her but also protect her. The school was concerned for her well-being, unlike her parents, and tried notifying social services, but it led to nothing. And let's not forget she was rejected by social services for 'being too old' when she tried to commit suicide. She was in danger, so where else could have gone to get help?! I mean, seriously?! Geeti, who was 13, did some crappy things like cut school and shoplift, so she could get put into foster care. I mean, why couldn't they (social services) just take her in and help that troubled soul turn her life around? Plus, Hamed's computer records show it, 'where to commit a murder?', which proves he was pretty much in on this, as the parents were. He got what he deserved, so whatever he's got coming to him, he might as well need it.

At the end of the day these women were murdered and these two men should be shut away forever . I would say the society has failed as a whole. Blaming something on someone is easy and unproductive, but to delve into the problem and fix it requires a holestic approach and contribution from everyone. Social workers can't intervene esp. when it comes to cultural sensitivity and political issues as the repercussion of their actions can be big engulfing the entire establishment. Suppose if social services intervene and things go wrong, everyone will blame it on them and the entire establishment will feel the heat. At then, you may be the first one who will be labeling the organization and politicians as intolerant, racists, etc., etc. The same is the case with the police here in the US as they are the ones at the receiving end. Today no one talks about the risky and unfavorable lifestyle of George Flloyd, in fact he has become a hero despite his 8 felonies and misdemeanors, as the entire blame has been shifted to the police conducts, the police force which was there to safeguard the community. In short, you and me are the problem if you delve deeper into the problem.

What is more tragic is that those responsible for protection, who know the signs, red flags and dangerous situations, are aware of these situations and just close their eyes and wash their hands. She was married to an abuser, suffered from his shaming her for her inability to give birth, and when he berated her to the point where she let him marry another woman, the other woman also abused her. She was beaten, and forced to work as a slave, and to take the abuse (psychological and physical). She was calling for help and nobody reached out to do so. Imagine living like this. At least the girls had each other. Who did she have? Her entries were absolutely heartbreaking. Wow.

Yes, there is a system in place to catch and prevent this kind of tragedies and it is well funded (highly taxed nation). It's officers came close enough to the 'fire' to recognize it and if they were little more professional they should have acted on it but they didn't: why bother, the salaries and the government perks are not going to go away if you are sloppy at your job, not in Quebec! Nobody blames the system for these savages' culture and 'traditions' but for not functioning as it should when it has all the reasons to do so.

What's more dishonorable? A teenage girl having a boyfriend or two parents murdering their 3 daughters and a 2nd wife? The child welfare services in Quebec have blood on their hands. Who knows if these girls would be alive if they actually did their job. And to think this happens in so many countries around the world, how many cases go unreported and not investigated?

Yes unfortunately in their culture, women are shamed when they do something sinful in their eyes and religion. And the mother let her daughters receive punishment because she is nothing to a man in that culture. She has no say.. but I agree I cannot imagine letting anyone harm my daughters

Every time I watch this, it breaks my heart. This mother and father did not deserve these 3 beautiful girls. How can a mother accept the fate of her girls like that. She carried them in her womb! Love is not only for boys. These beautiful girls would never have left your side when you grow old. Such evil parents. And the son who got groomed at a very young age to snitch. Who was the narcissist in that household?

drine_the_ poet sadly that look is not pain, it’s emptiness, the look of a man who has had what he help most dear ripped from him. His body can’t even comprehend the pain so instead his brain stops him feeling it, leaving him not broken, but lost. So saddening. Rest In peace to these women but my heart goes out to those left behind in this senseless crime. I mean no disrespect to anyone I may have upset, of course I cannot know how he feels, I’m just sharing my view from my experiences and knowledge etc.
