As a woman of southeast asian descent, your story broke my heart because I relate to this abuse. Nina, I am so very sorry that you endured this - you deserve all the happiness and safety in the world. The cultural and religious abuse is one of the main reasons why I left India and moved to Australia on my own as a teenager. When I was growing up I remember leaving my body and thinking "not yet, it's not your time to go" to get through each traumatic event, the bride burnings, and the incessant death threats made to 10 and 8-year-old little girls (my sister and I) for years. Your kindness radiates through your entire being, I wish I could hug you and tell you that you are loved. Thank you so much for speaking out xx

There ARE things you can do around where you live ...maybe you have a safe home or someplace for abused women to flee to in your town or city? You could volunteer there perhaps or you can if you have a channel on youtube and are a creator, offer like a bundle of survivor stories/biographies during April (Domestic Violence Awareness Month) to your viewership or some such to help spread awareness and educational packet or pamphlets to folks. Just some ideas. Don't want you to feel or think you are powerless.

The people in the clinic should have inquired and should have reported the abuse immediately. Her parents failed her. Her school failed her. The clinic failed her. Everyone failed her.

Her family has no honor to retain. The fact that so many years have gone by and they still send 30-40 death threats a month is absolutely insane. When her parents die, I hope the only tears she sheds are tears of relief.

I *do* know how they work where I live in the US, that they expire after 2 years and you have to petition to renew them. They do also require you to give your location of work and/or location of residence, so that the person is barred from going to those places or calling landlines.

However, they have rather significantly and consistently occurred in various parts of the Middle East and South Asia, with nearly half of all honor killings occurring in India and Pakistan.

My heart goes out to this woman. How are people so horrible and evil allowed to carry on. Her treatment is unthinkable. A dog can literally save your emotional health and your heart if you are in terrible home life as child. Until I was allowed to have one I knocked on every neighbors door who had a dog as a little girl. I proved to them I could handle walking their large dogs and eventually it became expected that I'd be taking their dog for walks every day. We had the best moments of my life. We'd sit together, we'd go to abandoned buildings, eat lunch together by the creek, and they let you love on them as much as you want to. Finally I was given a small dog. She was the best thing to ever happen, but my mother came home one day and said we were getting rid of her. I pleaded, cried until I couldn't breathe, but we still drove to give her away. I remember her fur being soaked from my face as we got out of the car and I touched her. My hands couldn't let go of her. I will never forget sitting her down in the people's driveway and am suddenly unable to write this without crying at the memory of it. Now, decades later I try to get to know my mother in her older age, and we pretend to like each other more than we do, but I lost trust and feeling for her that I will never get back no matter how hard I try. Please if you have kids who are dedicated to taking care of things, and ONLY if you trust that they will give the utmost care to a pet, get them a rescue dog from a shelter or a dog rescue. If there is screaming and constant strife in the house though, please please don;t do it because it is painful for animals to live in domesticated, loud and stressful households and more than any creatures on earth; they deserve nothing but good because they are pure, and are angels. Votebank. The Sikhs are quite a population and also influential in UK and some other countries. What goes on in their homes can be exactly opposite of what they show to the world. Even in India, in the north-western part, where the sikhs reside along with a few other communities, the attitude towards women is pathetic. Decades ago, it was a place where rampant female infanticide was practiced until the government had to ban the practice of the determination of sex of a child by punishing any medical practitioner who did so. The killings have come down substantially but the sex ratio is still skewed in that part. Also, the general attitude towards women is just not good. So, education is low in that area with a vast majority of sikhs involved in farming. women get married early. There's less focus on their studies, goes without saying. There's a lot of focus on their looks. Skin colour is very important. They are mostly seen as wives who have to bear children. after a woman becomes older, she gains influence in the family. i would like to point out that there are many sikhs who are very educated and the exact opposite. But the rural culture is what I've described.

The way the police responded to her saying "it was an attempted honour killing" and how the police would assume it was a suicide anytime they came across a bride-burning says everything you need to know. At that time, religious and racial tensions were clearly affecting local law enforcement. Either they were under direction to stay out of it, prior legal rulings made it impossible to prosecute, or they feared retaliation. Altogether a disgusting failure.

This is so horrific and heartbreaking to hear what this lady Nina has had to endure, and no one should ever have to experience this. I have read many of the comments from the various talks given around this traumatic and difficult story, (which hopefully will encourage and inspire others who may suffer in silence to share and speak up.) However,It's important not to have a judgmental perspective that gives the distorted and negative bias that this happens purely because of cultural patterns of behaviour and differences and is therefore a common phenomenon within . It is important to remember and point out that there are deeply loving Punjabi and Sikh families (parents of Nina’s era), including subsequent generations, who adore their daughters, treat them with the utmost love and respect, and nurture them in a safe and happy family environment. Let’s not vilify all Punjabi, Sikh, and Asian families under the label that it is cultural appropriation to treat their girls or daughters with hate, contempt, or abuse. I have five sisters, one of whom was adopted by my parents. We were so fortunate and truly blessed to have parents who adored each of us, treated us with nothing but love and respect, educated us, and allowed us to form our own paths and identities in life, despite the challenges they had to face, pleasing the extended family and sometimes wider community in the process. Sadly, so much of this has to do with individual parents mindsets, personal morals, and perhaps unacceptable behaviour patterns learned from their own past and personal experiences as opposed to cultural. Abuse, whether it's sexual, physical, or emotional It is not mutually exclusive to the Indian and Asian cultures; ill treatment of children happens in all parts of society.

As much as I agree with the sentiment, it may only agitate them more and drive them insane to the point that they would do literally anything to ensure her death. Those kinds of parents are so warped by the sense of maintaining their reputation and image among their peers and other family that being humiliated further would likely drive them to do some vile stuff. They care far more about their “honor” than being a loving parent to their children.

I literally cried listening to this. Its such a shame that people like her parents exist in this world. Just cruel, cold, bitter and entitled. I'm so glad that she survived and was able to get out of that awful cycle.

You are an amazing person. To have survived this and find the strength to tell your story. I worked in adult mental health services for many years. I worked on one particular project to help repatriate individuals who were housed within asylums from an early age. Asylums had been created to help those that suffered emotionally and some did great work. Unfortunately some of these institutions also serviced another purpose. Many of the people I met were elderly Women who had probably suffered similar fates as yourself; although not to the horrific extent that you experienced. Many through passion within youthful adventures had become pregnant outside of Wedlock. A great shame in our culture back then. They were labelled as insane and incarcerated, their children taken and bereft of familial support due to shame, they often ended their lives or lived them out as involuntary prisoners. Victims to an immature honour based culture known as the Victorian era. I pray your story reaches those who are currently suffering whatever their culture is. You are awesome and I pray that you find peace and freedom from immature bullies who perhaps could consider what next good deed they could do to compensate for the torture they have subjected you to. I pray both the Woman and Men of such cultures free themselves from the burden of such abhorrent and destructive ways of being. Blessings be super kind to yourself and thankyou again for your bravery.

The police need to arrest these evil people. They need to find the babies who were buried and all those involved. Nina has a beautiful soul. They are just harder to spot because the perpetrators are either in rural areas where no one will find out or more in tune with the rules of their country and how to not be caught. Plus it’s way less common. And WAY less boring. “Honor killing in UK” sounds interesting, “husband killed wife and daughter” is just another repeated news headline. There is a difference in magnitude and media attention.

Unfortunately this is one of many stories of women I’ve heard over the years who have been through similar horrors and a lot of them do not make it out alive. How one inflicts that kind of pain on their own flesh and blood is beyond me. Gender-based discrimination and voilence is a huge problem in my culture, but it doesn’t get the attention it needs and the system fails these women over and over again. I applaud her for having the courage to speak out about what she went through, it has shaken me to my core and I cannot stop crying. We need to do better to protect our girls and women. This is not okay, nobody should have to deal with this kind of pain and trauma.

I agree. I'm Punjabi SIkh from Vancouver, Canada, and let me tell you, I'm truly disgusted by our community. Even if families don't do to their daughters to the magnitude that this woman's family did to her, but a majority of the community stays silent on the issue, and they too are part of the problem, because they feel disappointed at the birth of a girl child, think girls should act, dress a certain way, do what they are told, and so in my eyes, most people are part of the problem, that gives rise to shit families like this, who have the audacity to do what they did. This so called friend of this woman's who gave her the advice to go back home was so wrong. Why would you want to go back to a place where your father and all his friends raped you. I thought my family was bad, my parents are just plain toxic in terms of mental and emotional abuse, but I endured nothing like this to this magnitude, actually I had it much better after I got married and moved to the United States, and after I left one night my dad almost ended up killing my sister because she had to work late, and he thought she was out slutting around, and my parents the next day said, oh it was nothing. Like fuck this shit. I wish I could have 5 minutes with this piece of shit father and her brothers, and still them in a room with big military guys and lets see how fucking tough they are then. I've heard so many stories like this, it's disgusting. Glad I distanced and disassociated myself the the community.

I cried throughout the video too. It’s beyond heartbreaking how your own family can break your spirit like this. Except for the rape and breaking of bones, I suffered a lot like this woman by my family. My mother was the same kind of angry abusive lunatic. And my dad a violent drunk. My school removed me from home when I was 17 and they always told me the same thing, “so many women don’t make it out alive.” I consider myself lucky. But the emotional pain this experience leaves you with is unlike any other. My only two options in life were 1. Live without a family and be completely on your own. 2. Be seriously abused by your parents and brother because you’re a girl. I chose the first one. This is the first time I’ve heard a story that’s much much worse than mine. And mine is pretty evil.

Thank you - thank you for sharing your story Nina. It was difficult to hear and, I'm sure, astoundingly more difficult to talk about, but I appreciate your bravery, courage, and willingness to open up about your awful experiences. You are a Warrior and sharing your truth not only reveals what's really going on but inspires others to do the same and fight against people and societal norms that perpetuate and allow the same injustices to go unpunished. I just want to let you know Nina, that I am so proud of you beyond words could ever describe. Your strength and courage is beyond anything I’ve ever seen, and I hope you’re able to get justice for what happened and that your family will pay for what they’ve done to you. Already subscribed to you, you’re such a beautiful soul, anyone that’s around you is so lucky to have you in their lives. You’re such an inspiration to me now, I pray that your life continues to flourish.

I’m so disgusted and angry. Not only was this poor, kind woman unloved and abused by her own family, but she then went on to be failed miserably by EVERY institution that should have helped her. Her teachers who ignored her bruises? Her friends’ parents who didn’t care that she was underfed? Her pediatrician that didn’t report the obvious abuse? The cop who didn’t arrest anyone? The doctors who didn’t file a report? The nurses who didn’t offer her counseling? I’m really embarrassed that all this happened in the UK.

Of course in typical UK fashion you will blame yourself, the cops, the system, the teacher, the neighborhood dog, anybody but the vile punjabis who did this. . Commendable virtue signaling. But that's the reason why this will never stop. Because you don't blame the right people - the vile disgusting pigs who do this to their own daughters. The vile culture that makes a mom act as enabler to her 14 year old daughter's gang rape by her husband's friends. Sorry, your virtue signalling doesn't help stop this filth. It's important that the large Punjabi diaspora is clearly told these vile practices allowed in their culture will not be tolerated in the UK. You keep with your self flagellation and you'll only see more girls suffer like Nina.

Sadly for whatever reason the U.K. Police and adjacent services are very averse to pursuing and investigateing and documenting cases of honor killings, attempted honor killings and this kind of "cultural" abuse which 99.9% of the time happens to women and girls and frankly it is disgusting. The change however has to start from those around us as well, this poor woman passed through an entire education system, into the job market with clear and evident sings that something was not right. I'm all for the "don't stick your nose into other people's business" but when you see someone who is suffering, even if they don't outwardly show it you can tell (hell a dog could tell) and you don't at least try to say anything you're an accessory to whatever happens next to that person.

This is beyond horrific. The fact that the people who did this to her, are still walking free, is horrifying in itself.

I’m only half way through and I can honestly say that this is one of the most horrible cases of child abuse I have heard in my entire life. It actually brought me to tears. To be abused to this extent at all is completely and categorically wrong but to have this happen to you because you happened to be born female…. The fact that she is still here, strong enough to talk to us all about it today is so remarkable.

“Normal” parents usually protect and care for their children, so what does this tell you about these parents and the religion they practice ? ! The word “demonic” comes to mind, certainly not “godly” ! However they will pay for the atrocity they have perpetrated on perpetrated on their own child. Shame on them !

Every time I thought she'd told the worst of it, it got more horrific. I can't believe anyone could survive this. What a warrior, what an outstanding human being. I hope the rest of her life is peaceful and she can finally have some happiness.

She should get them arrested. Why forgive? That's not something to be forgiven even if it was part of the culture. Bringing them to justice will lead to a positive change and will be helpful to many others in the future. But I don't blame her if she doesn't want to fight on her own. She might be so tired and seeking some peace in life. Some Humans rights organisation or activists must fight on her behalf.

People are being stabbed, robbed, beaten with police doing nothing if the perpetrator is muslim. For victims of honor violence there is no safe place - their community is violating them and police won´t help frequently. It´s insane.

So its ok to be a mother but not a daughter? That’s outright bullying, I am so sorry you went thru this.

This is what I don’t get. Isn’t her mother a female of their culture? Aren’t females needed for marriage and children. They had already had two sons so…it’s all so illogical. One can’t blame culture or tradition, they are just evil, evil using culture and tradition as an excuse to enjoy perpetuating violence against those less powerful.

Has Nina's family been brought to justice? Attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, rape, sexual assault, the list goes on. Every member of both families must be convicted for these crimes.

So can you provide a link or an article please? Edit: I read one of Nina's replies on this video where someone asked her if her parents were held accountable yet and she said no and shes still fighting for justice. And this was only 19 hours ago when she made the comment. So they haven't been arrested yet.

This broke my heart, I could not even watch this video half way as it is so painful to watch. Prayers and thoughts go out to you and everyone who has to go through this or has gone through it. Your bravery is really admirable.

It's crazy that her brother admitted to a police officer that he had ATTEMPTED MURDER but they said they would let him off if he apologised?? What??? I cannot imagine how strong she must be for dealing with all this abuse her whole life.

Likely the legal system just freezes up since this is a 'cultural' issue. They don't know how to handle it and these in-groups can be very secretive and uncooperative so the police just turn a blind eye. They're likely already just pretty racist and don't care much for these people and at the same time they don't want to rile up these communities. So nothing gets done. Tale as old as time.

There are worse stories that are just as common as this one. In the Asian and African worlds, many parts of their cultures still allow this kind of abuse. I worked with women who had their genitals cut when they were 12 or so, the reasoning is they will remain virgins and respect their husbands because they can't feel sexual feelings. This woman's family is everywhere. Many people who practice as she reports live in Europe, especially England, and here in western US. Women are still burned to death, and in Saudi Arabia, stoned (I've been to the stoning circle) to death.

This is one of the most horrific stories I've heard. You are such a strong woman.

As a nurse, it pained me to the core to hear her say that she was ignored even by one of us. How I wish I could have been there to hug and comfort her. I’m so sorry you were let down even by us Nina. Truly am.

Bless that taxi driver for helping her and staying with her. I could feel her pain when she was telling her story. The first time she felt loved was in an abortion clinic after she had been gang raped. How awful. I really want to give this woman a hug

I can't finish watching it. I am a father and I cannot understand such cruelty towards a child. How is so much hate possible? my tears fall. I would like to hug her and tell her that she deserves only love. Even today there are many people around the world who reject and HATE feminism, for giving women the right to be treated as humans.

The fact that she can talk about this without completely balling is mind boggling to me. Such a strong woman.

Seriously, I’m sitting here crying and I’m just listening to her. The world truly can be such a dark place. I just don’t understand how anybody could do this to a child. Children are some of the brightest lights in this world, why are some adults so intent on snuffing it out. Do they not remember what it was like to be a child? To feel not listened too? Most women that go through things like that are softer and more sweet. That's why it often happens to them repeatedly. Like, people who were physically and sexually abused as children end up experiencing the same as adults because abusers can spot them from a mile away. They're passive and softer and don't see red flags. It's hard to break the cycle.

I've listened to her before powerful speaker,..what really gets me angry is knowing that millions of girls are going through exactly what she is and it's somehow been normalised by a society because a bat sh!t crazy religious belief system that treats women/girls,like personal property,I cannot for the life of me,understand why we do trade with countrys like this,..I hear the argument that we can show them another side to life by trading with them,but i feel we are giving them legitimacy in their eyes,.I think that's the wrong approach,..Ending apartheid only worked because the whole world stood firm against an idea that divided people by race and once everybody was on border with that process of not working with that government in anyway,..it fell,they could no longer justify their political decision of government or feel thst they were somehow being accepted in anyway whatsoever,...invading country's and trying to impose our standards of humanity might seem the right way to go but these peoole still have their pride and ot must come from within and be forced into thst way of thinking as the world turns its back on them,...all we do is get country's to double down on their backward ideology and they have the money to do this,thanks to the trade we still do with them...country's I would not do business with.. Saudi Arabia Pakistan, China Qatar Iran Would be a good way to start and thst eould put other country's on notice obviously it would work better one country at a time and I would start with Pakistan.. There hatred towards Christians in Pakistan is horrendous and without trade they would collapse within months,we would demand fundermental changes gender equality, religious freedom,property rights protection,a new consitution and they would be helped financially with infrastructure projects and increased trade.....it could work but do we have the will...?

How brave you are, Nina. How good you are, to share this. I will now watch part II, hoping too that you are now living in a wonderful place in this world.
