Why are UK authorities ignoring honour killings?

Forced Marriages: Arranged marriages causing a wave of unreported violence
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv/?lid=66262
There are 8 to 10 thousand forced marriages in the UK every year. As authorities are accused of taking 'honour' crimes too lightly, girls who resist or refuse a marriage can face abuse, torture, even death.
"We have kidnappings, abductions, sexual offences. Anything that you can imagine could happen does happen in the name of honour", Nazir Afzal, the Chief Prosecutor for Northwest England, tells us. Shafilia Ahmed simply wanted to be a lawyer and to make her own relationship choices. But her parents judged the 17-year-old's aspirations to be shameful to the family, so they killed her and made their other children watch the consequences of perceived dishonour. In the multi-cultural corners of the United Kingdom law enforcement authorities are struggling to address the problem. Police, in particular, have been accused of not taking honour crime seriously, ignoring clear warning signs and pleas for help. Detective Constable Palbinder Singh says part of the problem is being too culturally sensitive. "It's a ruse. We won't interfere with that family, it's their culture. Well hang on a minute, crimes are being committed, people's lives are being destroyed, people's freedoms are being suppressed."

I was one of those women for over 17yrs. Married at 17. I was beaten and strangled to death twice. My babies breaking through the door and jumping on and hitting their father. I had mere seconds. It was documented by my Doctor- everyone knew but many feared that man. I stood up to him, suffering a spinal fracture at one point.. I am also an ethnic woman. I now suffer from RMS, and Osteoarthritis of my spine. I even have tearing in the cushions between the discs.. I have been discriminated against for more than half my life. As a result, I suffer immensely due to poor medical care. We need to change as a society in so many ways .. It changes you forever.

Since the beg. of time, 10,000 yrs ago when the first man was created in the image of God, Satan has worked his evil in order to destroy what God has made. The entire Old Testament is filled with pagan religions that worship things of the world instead of God...it is filled with man murdering innocent human beings to pagan gods...it is filled with pagan religions that murder without punishment. God said there is ONLY ONE God, ONE religion and that is the Heavenly teachings sent through Christ to re-teach a pagan world that which was lost in the Garden of Eden through choosing to worship the world instead of God. In this case, England is already a country of idle worshipers of flesh, thus, the centuries old belief in worshiping humans re: queen Liz etc. These are pagan religions that enchant millions of idle worshipers who worship in Satan's kingdom instead of obeying God and worshiping Him alone. "Honour killing" is nothing more than one more pagan religion that worships the teachings of Satan instead of God. God commanded, "You shall not kill". Any man-made religion that ignores, rejects, or contradicts God IS a pagan religion, one that worships the teachings of Satan, in his kingdom, which is the world. All these commenters are stupid fools for not recognizing that the root of all evil is Satan.

I can understand the use of a parents' blessing - a *good* parent knows what is best for their child, and sometimes when you're in love, you don't notice that your significant other may actually be a monster. That's why it's so important for a parent to be onboard with a marriage, to make sure the child will be safe. But to force a child to marry is another thing entirely... It's terrible, and it shouldn't be happening in a developed society.

The parents assume that they know better than their daughters simple as that. Many parents of every culture think they know what's best for their children and will lead them in certain directions. These are examples of that taken to the extreme and of course they are wrong and thankfully in this country these killings are recognised as the crimes that they are.

Sorry about my rant below but I was a teacher in an inner city school and lost five girls from my class to forced marriages abroad and honour killings were known as being held over the girls even at such an age as the primary school children I taught. It’s so scary. I had a lot of trouble when dealing with the male family members on parents evenings or if I needed to talk to them about the child in my class. I even had a father come into my class whilst they were all gathered around and beat his daughter with a large stick, when I intervened he hit me too but I wasn’t having anyone beaten in my care!! It was a major eye opener and the things these children told me in confidence is horrific!!

I completely agree! If arranged marriages and "family honor" (in the MEN'S eyes) is so important, why not stay and LIVE in a country where IT IS practiced and important? On another note, I see why the men can be so posessive (not that it makes it right) but the women are GORGEOUS! And this is coming from a heterosexual Latina woman!

I told her that I want to spend my life with someone who I could love than money. She then used the “What about the kids?” Or “Being rich can make your life easier” excuse. But I can clearly see that she’s not happy with my dad. He’s not abusive in anyway but she and him doesn’t have much in common and their differences in personality would clashed a lot. And she cannot get a divorce because it’s considered to be an embarrassment to the family to have a divorce in my country.

hugh graeme It’s related to ethnocultural beliefs. If you listened, the connecting thought between the parents of this ethnic group (not genetically related) is the “paramount” consideration of family honor. By not marrying, they were all potentially ruining their family honor in the eyes of those of the same ethnocultural background. Connection to one’s ethnicity is on a spectrum from fully participating to unknowingly participating. This thought process of family honor finds itself between the two. Similar to the way some other groups do things “just because it’s how you do things.”

I had a Indian guy who was of the Sikh religion who told me he loved, and I had never spoken to him before. I worked with him and he was from India. At first I thought he was kidding, but He was dead serious. He kept calling me a good girl and I was not like the other girls... I had to get 2 of my other friends involved because it was so wierd to hear I love you, yet not ever speaking to the guy... He even said He could look after me and give me whatever I wanted... it was one of the most awkward moments of my life, knowing this and having to work with him. And yes I was from a western country.

This is barbaric and sick. There's no honor in committing cold-blooded, premeditated murder, especially murdering their own flesh and blood. Their sense of "honor" is fucked up.

I was forced to go overseas to get married. But my family listened after awhile. I am one of the lucky ones.

The fact that the woman's or wife's rights are even being discussed at the wedding just proves how few "rights" the woman actually has. All that bullshit about consent is all something that should go unsaid. It should already be known. This is just a way to cover their tracks. If that woman in fact did say she had a problem with the marriage she would be killed for bringing dishonor to her family... The whole concept of "Honor" is ancient and antiquated to me. The Japanese may have a very strange culture regarding honor as well but at least the dishonorable one kills his/herself instead of getting MURDERED by your own FAMILY.

Yet here we stand in 2019 where movements like the #metoo are being disregarded - women actively trying to speak out about basic rights yet we still struggle so no I don't think talking about women's rights at a wedding that proves anything -.-. Also what shitty point were you trying to convey?

It is to brain wash their women to believe that islam brought more rights for women and honour than any other religion, sadly their women believe it.

I admire Jacinda, even though her family was not at her daughter's wedding due to them disowning her, she did the right thing by opposing her forced marriage and running away. The world needs more brave people like this but then again, you have to be lucky, too. She was lucky to escape, the other girls were not.
