As an American, I sometimes feel like Canada puts criminals' rights above victims' rights. I'm sure plenty of Canadians might accuse us of being the opposite, but in a case like this, I don't understand why Canada won't arrest these people.

I looked after my MIL until her death. She was a lively, fun woman. When I think of someone taking advantage of her in her last, most vulnerable years, it makes me sick to my stomach. These people are despicable. May they get their full due.

agree but it is swept under the carpet. These elders in many cases are prisoners, no access to phones, internet (Or knowledge of) Many are Demented. Its a sad thing. I took care of my Ma the last 4 or 5 yrs of her life. Then everybpdy .saids "why di you get the house, all that money etc etc. Because I was her friend. I bathed her, I sat u with her, listened to her, took her todoctor, I had no life to speak of, but I owed her.

This is just the type of family that has probably carried on with smalltime criminal activity. Its awful that there is no concrete evidence because the circumstantial evidence is crazy.

We need to take elder abuse seriously. If you suspect it, don't look away. If people had stepped in much earlier, all four of these people could have been rescued from this evil family.

"Just a matter of time" says the cop who's been investigating the missing persons case for 20 years.

stephen roth That’s what they always say n now and again they get lucky with a really cold case and usually it’s a member of public that decided to come forward with information that opens a case back up , not coz police are working hard at them.When they do get lucky they make a big old deal all over papers n t.v in hopes it will pacify the public for a while.

All these wonderful people who saw that poor lady being taken advantage of, and no one took the time to help her out?!!!

i agree, when it comes to small towns , the police are always most likely in on it as many are related or deal with each other in some way. i know. i lived in a small town and had a terrible experience with one of he opp when a man attacked me and got away with it because he worked for a relative of the opp. i will never move to small town again.

I've followed this case for years. Thank you Fifth Estate for keeping it 'alive'. Some people may not be familiar with it, some may have info on the Laans family since 1998 and may put pressure on them. I hope some questions will be answered...

You should not thank The Fifth Estate for this report. They have evidence that proves the killer. Thankfully others have evidence that they know what happened!

Great job, Bob McKeown & the Fifth Estate. I've followed this story since you've made it public--YOU are the ones giving a voice to the 16 people who died while in the care of the Laan family, including the 4 whose disappearances/deaths were never reported. It's clear to me that if you had not pursued this story the OPP would have allowed these cases to become cold & forgotten. The Laan family stole money from these vulnerable elderly & disabled people & forced them to live in filthy unsanitary dangerous substandard conditions. When they couldn't get more money out of them, the Laans coldbloodedly murdered 4 (and possibly more) of the most vulnerable people in our society. OPP needs to work harder to bring these sociopaths to justice.

It’s incomprehensible that nobody has come forward with information needed to break this case. These missing people were once loved by parents, or spouses or children and deserve so much better than this.

She wasn't willing to abandon her 30 cats and I doubt there were many people willing to take her in with 30 cats. It should be law that these places have random inspections to make sure buildings are safe and elderly dependents are receiving proper care. Maybe the law has changed in Canada by now?

Wow, it's amazing how cowardly every single one of those "friends" are, and how useless law enforcement was. Rename this documentary to "no useful information, and a complete system failure" or "pot belly serial killers with a limp"

If they were cashing the checks after the death of these people, then the government should make them pay that money back, and charge them for fraud and embezzlement.

I am just amazed that the investigator, who has actually been working on this case for literally a couple decades, had the audacity and nerve to come on this show. He sat there and smiled and then said it was just a matter of time before they arrest someone for the murders. WHAT??? It’s been decades and you’ve sat your butt on your thumb and just spun....🤷‍♀️ I was so embarrassed for him, since he obviously wasn’t for himself. Just such an awkward moment. No shame at all

Bringing sufficient evidence to the trial is imperative in avoiding the suspects walking away free after a jury can't convict due to poor evidence. The police are probably embarassed. We should be hoping someone comes forward with damning evidence, not shaming hard-working detectives.

I seem to remember, long ago, reading that they were all found shot to death.

This quote says it all. "These were 16 people who had no voice. Somebody needs to speak for them. They need closure. There has to be an answer. That's why it's important to keep digging. They were the weakest members of our society. Their ghosts need closure, so they don't walk at night thinking, what about me?" Incredibly well said sir.

I have zero faith in or respect for the OPP or my local police force.Arrogant, entitled, and useless to the average citizens, in general. But indeed all are overpaid.

Utterly Despicable .. This investigation needs to continue until justice is reached and the missing individuals are found and given a dignified deserved burial .. The Laan family need to be held accountable and served with the most severe punishments.

You don't just reach out to suspects of murder. You subpoena thier asses for questioning and as soon as your given the warrant.

"All it takes for evil to thrive is for good people to do nothing ", this case is a terrible example of the proof of this old saying.

11 elderly people living in one house sleeping on mattresses on the floor! Never before have I seen a video were I feel such a huge sense of anger. I used to be a care worker for the elder in the uk and even then the level of care was bare bones, sure the homes were clean and they were well fed and had reasonably nice rooms but we were not allowed to sit with the residents and talk with them or even start a game of bingo as we were cleaners and kitchen staff too. In one home I worked at I spent some of my wage on a bag full of small prizes and insisted on organising a bingo afternoon and the residents loved it so when I hear of abuse like what my grandad went through it fills me with immense fury because I know first hand just how vulnerable the elderly are.

No one in Muskoka knew or helped these old people!!???? SICKening for a small community

Erin Burke a female officer did a pretty extensive investigation but I think they scoffed at her because she was a woman and now they're in damage control.

Of course there was something to be done! Riddiculous. They were allowed to run a business that took advantage of the elderly. Police knew about it.

Its so obvious that foul play was involved yet nothing is being done there's enough circumstantial evidence for an arrest people don't just go missing on their own especially from a retirement home. how much more obvious do you need to be without outright confessing.

Keep your family close, even when they’re old. Especially the elders. Shipping them off to be cared for by others is a crime in itself.

Ive seen another shows about this case, and the store teller-lady (in the peach shirt) really was her friend, maybe the only one she had. You cant help people if they dont think they need it.

Deplorable conditions for the residents who had no one looking out for them. Welfare checks never preformed I guess. The family that stole all that money still running loose is a concern. The old man Mr Lann looked too old to suffer any real punishment as prison will treat him well. Five Star treatment compaired to the care they gave paying customers. Justice not served.

A family of sociopaths, their disregard for humanity is only matched by their greed.

The biggest question I have is, why does it take over 20 years to investigate, probe or bring “justice” for what is believed to be four murders, brutality, theft and abuse of the elderly people in the care of these monsters?.When these folks are so old themselves that any punishment will be so late they are unlikely to see any consequences that amounts to true justice. As usual, the authorities have a lot to answer for.

Why was a 70+ woman moved into a dilapidated van with no running water, heat or toilet? I hope Canadians in that area are wise to them & never put their loved one in!

That officer is very good at answering questions without actually answering the question.

Shocking that this still remains unsolved. Seems to be very little doubt. Can they not be prosecuted for fraud ?

This cop is so smug . He will always have a job as long as he is not good at solving cases . He will always have something to do. How can he say , its just a matter of time ? Make some arrests man !!!

Swedish Holmberg I wondered that also. Couldn't of been very close to him. I see that a lot though being a nurse in geriatrics. Put them in there and kinda forget about them. Maybe a monthly phone call... Very very sad!

@@majakolonja4266 yes it is very sad. I know I shouldn’t be talking about patients, however I’m not mentioning any names. One lady who was passing.. I whispered in her ear to hold on as her son was coming. I had phoned him & informed him of her rapidly deteriorating condition. I assumed he was coming as lived in same city. Well she held on for 2 days. Mumbling when her son was coming. So I phoned him & asked him when he was coming. He said he wasen’t. & told me the funeral home he wanted to pick up her body. Of course I didn’t tell her he wasen’t coming. So every free moment I had on my shift I would sit with her and held her hand. It was tear jerker. No one came to see her off. 💔my heart 🥲

WOW!! I CANNOT EVEN WATCH THIS... the aloof attitude and indifference of law enforcement, and community disgusts me! Not one of the other officers are remotely competent, their language is pure avoidance. All kudos go to the lone, single, young, female detective. SMH.

They should of been in jail for cashing illegal cheque? Like wtf and why didn't the cops do anything about the fact that they are not registered to run a home for elderly people cuz if they were registered to run a home how was that right for the cops to even allow elderly people to live in that ??

Cashing illegal cheques does not carry the same sentence as quadruple murder. They want to get them on that, not a lesser crime. Ontario introduced the Long-Term Care Homes act in 2007, which set out a standard of care for long-term homes. Prior to that, there was little regulation for how they could be run or what even qualified as proper treatment. They did not have to be registered. While many surely provided proper care, it left the elderly vulnerable to predatory criminals like the Laans.

Even before the first person went missing, they prepared to do away with them, and just never report them missing. They also didn’t stop the checks or forward the checks to their new place of residence or vacation location. This was a plan from the beginning, I would call it premeditated. That’s the first charge even though they couldn’t find the person missing.

All these "I can't comment on that" "I can't go into much detail" urks me!!!!

Seems like they have it all figured out. I would question the land lord 4 missing elders one family. Pretty much solved huh?

But there's a silly little thing called proof. The cops won't do anything without proof. 😒

I don't understand why they haven't EVEN been charged with fraud, the case seems to be OBVIOUS!! This case is a real embarrassment to our police force.

Maybe that's why police don't mind the information being available as they recognize the public can unearth criminals far quicker than police ever could. The police may secretly prefer street justice being dealt to criminals.

I am so sick of elderly people being treated so poorly. All these people talking for them now that they're dead, where were they when they were alive?

In situations like this I think it's time to go D.I.Y the cops and justice system have had their go

Great idea !

From watching this episode I come away with the feeling of incompetence and apathy on the part of the Police??

If you were a friend or a child and saw someone living like that and being treated like that, WHY would you leave them there...I do not understand that.

This is a disgrace on Matthews and his police force.There’s absolutely no will,or dynamism,to get this case solved,or to get this family down to the station,and questioned.It seems that elderly people,in care homes,don’t count,to that police force.
