I was in the McDonald’s closest to the Parliament buildings one day and an older RCMP officer in uniform started complaining to everyone in line about the people in charge of the force and how useless they were. I think that speaks volumes.

In 1992 I had an interview to join the RCMP and did very well on the exams before entering considering my lack of education. The interviewer had issues with my three year military service of some insubordination. I said sometimes authority needs to be challenged and not followed blindly. Then this happened and makes me wonder I’m glad I never became part of the RCMP.

Those guys are taking the fall to satisfy the families of the victims only because they were officers. If it were civilians murdered than no further investigation would’ve been conducted! This is so sad! I am truly sorry for all the victims involved by that horrible man (Rosco) but to those men are VICTIMS also!! There will never be true justice on this planet because it’s filled with too many unjust ppl pointing the finger everywhere but where it needs to be pointed.

FBI and CIA agents got arrested for spying, many cops got arrested because they didhonoured somehow their badge. I'm sure many haven't been arrested yet. But claiming they are all rotten would be foolish. And if you know from yourself you wouldn't be implicated in such scemes and not be afraid of the potential consequences of the parasites' ball, than you really should join after all. The RMCP needs good, clean, honest, efficient new recruits.

At minimum, something like a quarter of their stories involve investigations allegedly bungled by law enforcement. There was no need to insult them. Consider the following comment: "I love how, at the heart of Hitler's policies, there's always some incompetent or malicious Jew" Clearly this isn't a literal endorsement of hitler right? You can see how this a comment in the same vein as "I love how [opposing political party] always blames [my political party]", a humorous sarcastic quip. Although I notice that I've been assuming that you were insulting the original commenter. If you were insulting The Fifth Estate for their investigation of alleged police incompetence, then that's a different story.

You gotta love The Fifth Estate for how they dig into a story & try their level best to get to the truth. Unfortunately, when there are agencies with their own agendas involved, the clear, unvarnished truth can be pretty hard to uncover. Kudos to them for trying. We need a "Fifth Estate" here in the USA. Most of our so-called "investigative" news programs don't like to step on the sensitive toes of our lawmen/women, or the law makers. Thank you Fifth Estate for another excellent program. Not only are your stories well researched & well written, your reporters' presentations are top-notch!

Moral of the story is......NEVER talk to the cops and ALWAYS ask for a lawyer.

Never ever say you ‘understand’ after they’ve asked you a question. It is trickery and it really means you STAND UNDER their authority. Then they can do what they want with you. You do not have to give them your name either. Simply do not answer their questions.

Sounds to me that the deputy commissioner orchestrated the whole investigation in return for a promotion, he apparently soon left to work at headquarters.

This is very reminiscent of the recent unfortunate circumstances in Nova Scotia. The RCMP failed to stop an illegal shipment of firearms, failed to stop their sale, failed to recognize someone's ill intentions, failed to stop their plan from happening, failed to warn the community during a violent and dangerous public situation, and ultimately failed to stop the criminal in a timely manner. And rather than admit that they failed, they just blame it all on law abiding firearms owners.

Let's fire off a few rounds just in case." They did that, he was nowhere near and the cops just drove up to a firehall where people were hiding and fired on it. Seemingly for no reason. Still no explanation. Under the rug.

One cop came out to report the timeline of the 13 hour killing spree and the whole time I was thinking wtf were you doing ignoring emergency calls not warning people etc. Now we know he had a history domestic violence and sexually assaulted many patients at his clinic those concerns just ignored for years too.

Two inexperienced officers teamed up together instead of each being partnered with more experienced officers was a poor judgment call by superiors in itself. add that to lone officers left overnight at an insecure crime scene owned by a known felon who was known to carry a weapon and use that weapon to intimidate witnesses and victims. and yet RCMP officials claim they could not foresee or anticipate violence by the suspect beforehand. Can you say gross incompetence and poor judgment? Seems obvious to me, the suspect was underestimated; he got the drop on the officers were lax in their attentiveness and inexperience and having the gift of surprise, was able to kill four officers, single-handedly. A question never made known, was how the rifle used by the suspect was owned by one of the defendants and came to be in the hands of the felon and how it became known who allegedly helped the felon dispose of his truck and drove him back to his farm without being spotted or noticed by the officers on guard. Of course, it's easy for me to make these assumptions after the fact, but, I have to wonder why experienced well-trained superior officers of the RCMP didn't even think of the probability. Or might it have been due to complacency of normal peaceful circumstances that they were caught off-guard? History has shown to often what can happen when guards are let down, catastrophes happen

Unarmed police raided the wrong house, another time they raided a drug house unarmed and as the first plain clothed cop walked into a room a nutter with a gun was waiting for him behind the door, he stepped out behind the cop putting a pistol to his head, & took the cop hostage, armed police turned up, and no one living there could get in or out. It was a huge house, 2 old Victorian town houses knocked into one HUGE house, 3 storey, with the cellars and attics converted, and people living in those also. The houses had been turned into bedsits, EVERY room was occupied. The cop was held from Friday morning until Monday midday ish. Same cop whom was held hostage bust another house, in notorious area, and the guy had a pair of Staffordshire bull terriers in the house. A male & a female. The cop twisted the guy up, in his front room, whilst the guy was begging for them to just get off him, so he could lock the dogs in another room, as they were protective, and he didn’t want his dogs to be destroyed if they did their job, and protected him, which he said WAS LIKELY TO OCCUR! They told him to shut it, this cop, had the guy twisted up, bent over the back of the sofa, and tie wrapped his wrists, the male staff went bounding into the room, jumped up, and ripped the cops face to pieces. 86 stitches! They DESTROYED the dog too!! Even though they were warned a couple of times by the guy, he told them it would happen, and was ignored. They charged him with possession, and for the dog attack!! Cops EVERYWHERE are the same. Corrupt, NEVER have to take responsibility for their OWN actions, NEVER LEARN, and it WONT change. Everytime the cops have shot someone dead here, basically assassinating them, or someone goes into the police cells perfectly healthy and fine, in perfect health, and then leave on a stretcher deceased, the cops are ALWAYS found to of acted lawfully, and they investigate themselves, so are ALWAYS cleared. The ONLY way to get them is by civil action, which they always settle out of court. They don’t pay that compensation though, the TAX PAYER does ultimately. Peace.

I'm from a small fishing village in Cornwall, uk, growing up we were told "never trust the sea or the police" and when we got a bit older we found out why, friends died of drowning and other friends and family (including myself) were arrested for things we hadn't done but the police tried charging people any way. I was lucky that I was not even in the county when a crime was committed but they still tried to pin it on me and refused to acknowledge their mistake, until it got to court and , due to pictures taken of me in London on the date of the crime, and the case got thrown out. I didn't feel safe until the two local police officers got moved on and we had new replacements that I started to feel safe again. The two coppers had followed my car and stopped me several times before they got moved on but it was horrible for the time that they were there. I got close to one of their replacements, who was older and close to retirement, and he was very kind and said that lots of young coppers would nick their own mothers to get promoted. I have never been in trouble with the police since but I also wouldn't call them for help because of my experience of them.

We have had crooked cops in the past and I’m sure now as well, and a lot of lovely, good ones that should be in the job. The stories I’m hearing from all these other countries has really changed my prospective of them though. Police system was designed to be a bully with a strong arm never to serve and protect, the internet and these phones just puts it in front of us now.

This incident still haunts me today, I have still not forgiven the "rcmp" (no caps because they do not get my respect for it.) This was so shameful and degrading for the rcmp to sink this low as to the extent they went all because the real killer is dead and they still needed scape goats, these two fine gentlemen were definitely "INTIMIDATED" by Rosco for there so called small involvement in this case. Shame on the rcmp. Makes me ill to my stomach. I have read, viewed, searched every stitch of material on this as I can and it pisses me off so much. Felt so strong about the innocence of the accused i even forwarded money to the Hennessey fund raiser years ago after they were given there lengthy sentence. I consider my homework pretty complete on this case and confident with my judgment call as it far out weighs any thing the rcmp ever came up with.

The level of proof for this they would have to prove is BEYOND ANYBREASONABLE DOUBT. all their lawyer would have to do is raise slight doubt... and they would be fo ns innocent. But the lawyers said basically...no they got ya. Plead guilty, you don’t have a chance. say all you like about the methods or whatever but they ain’t innocent....guilty.

i suggest you read up on the murder of Rachel Nichols and how a shoddy police investigation caused an innocent man to be hounded for decades simply because of a few letters he wrote to someone he didn't know was a cop. he never admitted guilt for anything other than walking his dog the same day a murder took place but people believed he was guilty because of these letters until DNA evidence completely proved his innocence

Really so sad how these two guys got forced into admitting guilt (quite possibly to things they didn't even do) or going to prison for life. No young person who has not, themselves, committed a violent crime against society should be put in this kind of situation. Horribly unfair.

My uncle was once an auxilary officer for Mayerthorpe. He had no real training but they used to take him along on reserve calls just because he looked big and intimidating. They are a joke.

Glad to remember the days when TV shows asked relevant questions and didnt simply follow official versions. Its a dying art. Do we have a one on why they plead guilty to manslaughter for giving Roszko the rifle - and whether they knew what he was going to do, and if the rifle was actually used?

I am from Russia;now live in Canada and I should say that in fact it is not that bad here with cops-at least not THAT bad like in Russia..I never could even imagine that I will have to become a refugee from my country but it is exactly what happened!And that is due to the cops!The thing is that some years before I just made couple of criminals with stars on shoulders(like your criminals with badges)sentenced to very large terms due to their attempt to rob me using their authority which failed..So what began shortly after that was a real nightmare!And knowing that there was no chance for me to be left alone and just seeing that the law changed and made cops actually legally able to kill a person if he runs away when they order him to stop and after that simply to write it in their report(so they should not have a reason or an order to order you to stop-and if you run-that is the enough reason for them to legally shoot you)which meant for me either running or dying.. So anyway I even was never afraid of being at war-I even went to Ukraine in 2014 like a volunteer and never was afraid of my enemy-as there I could simply shoot back which I did and did it successfully but in my own country I had an enemy which I couldn't do almost anything so this is far worse than being at war!Because at least at war you are able to fire back at your enemy and here you are not!So yes,although I see your cops are infinitely better than ours but I also guess I will never be able to trust any of them in any country:they will always remain potential beasts and cold blooded murderers for me..

I *HATE* when these things don't tell you how things ended up!! So I looked it up for y'all. ‼️ Shawn Hennessey and Dennis Cheeseman admitted to giving James Roszko a gun and a ride to his property where the RCMP were guarding the Quonset hut. Roszko ambushed and killed the officers before killing himself. Shawn Hennessey pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in 2005. He was granted parole in 2015 and his sentence fully expired in June 2019. Cheeseman also pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years and two months in prison. He was released in 2013 after serving two-thirds of his sentence.

He has changed, from a totally nonviolent person with no desire for anything but a normal life, to a man who would shoot another man AFTER taking away his gun, so the police don't have to do the job THEY are getting paid to do. Sickening what those crooks have done, to him and to Dennis.

Entrapment is illegal here in the usa for a reason. You pray on people in a manufactured situation on their insecurities. It would be easy for them to make up a lie out of fear.

So these bums were there to repossess a car, but instead raided a man's property without a warrant and decided to illegally seize all this evidence they "fell upon"? The property owner returns, shoots/kills the trespassers and they blame the two innocent men for their part? Am I right? How about following proper procedure in the first place, WTF...this stuff makes my blood boil! Even the search warrant was fruit of the poisonous tree --they already searched!

Battle of Fort McHenry

This episode of the RCMP is just another example of their absolute incompetence in almost all areas of their responsibility. This includes but is not restricted to the Air India Bombing and the murder of Mr. Dziekanski in Vancouver. This organization is tasked to be the National Police, the Provincial Police in 8 provinces and 3 Territories, as well as Municipal Police in numerous towns and cities. They are also called upon to be Federal Ceremonial Police in Canada and beyond, such as spending thousands of dollars for seadoos, on the Aga Khan's Island. In their efforts to be 'jacks of all trades" they have proven to be the masters of none. The Mayerthorpe tragedy is just one of their numerous and incompetent actions resulting in the needless death of four of their officers and the conviction of 2 innocent bystanders. This latest travesty of justice needs to be properly investigated and their 2 victimized scapegoats need to be cleared of the twisted and contrived accusations they have faced. Those officers who are responsible for the misguided questionable investigations should be held accountable for this grave miscarriage of justice.

After watching Making a Murderer on Netflix, nothing surprises me anymore. The way the young boy on that docu-series (Brendan?) was interrogated & hounded by the police into a false confession made my stomach churn. Very very difficult to watch. I no longer have much belief in the police; & those 2 boys sitting in prison for those cops murder.. bloody ridiculous, & incredibly sad. What wasted lives.

lol..man that's some circular logic right there. He's guilty so let's interrogate him. He's not talking to the people who are accusing him of horrible things, so he must be guilty. (Or offended? How would you feel being called things you're not, and being told you're something you know you're not?) In fact, you say he's 'maybe' GUILTY of more than the charge? Good thing Canada's legal system doesn't rely on your guesses. Oh wait, yes it does, just like ours here in the US. It relies on you and 11 other dolts too dense to get out of jury duty.

Rozsko was under 2 lifetime firearms bans at the time of these murders. Around a dozen firearms were found on his farm afterwards, and the rifle he used (HK 91) has been prohibited in Canada since the 90's. Its believed he smuggled it from the US sometime in the 80's. Yep... Gun control works!

At least the cops in Washington state will tell you to your face when they have no intention of doing their job.

Lets do the math on this thing. First and foremost it's a tragedy of near epic proportions that 4 young mounties got shot and killed. That being said these 2 guys got rail roaded...that's obvious to anyone with an unbiased eye. The RCMP were looking to deflect blame away from their own shortcomings as to training and command and control. My understanding is that Swawn and Dennis gave Roscoe a ride back to his farm. Now when a freak like Roscoe shows up and "asks" for a ride...you don't say no. And the argument that these 2 young guys should have dropped dime on Rocsoe after dropping him off is laughable. Roscoe was the Canadian version of John Gotti in that he walked from all or at least most of any charges that were ever brought against him. Had they called the cops and told them of Roscoes presence and he got caught, that is, taken alive you can bet your bottom buck that Roscoe would have connected the dots and figured out who ratted him out. Surely he would have come looking for payback. When even the local RCMPs are afraid of him, that they leave loaded guns with children to protect themselves, what do you expect regular people to do?? I met Shawn years later and of course we never discussed any of this but my take on him is that he is as he is portrayed in this Fifth Estate report...not a killer by ANY stretch of the imagination. Just a regular guy. As to Dennis allowing himself to get involved in what he could easily have figured to be illegal activity after coming so close to getting pulled into being an accomplice to the killing of 4 mounties just goes to show what head controls a young mans thinking. Long before I met Shawn my friends and myself had discussed this story at length and come to conclusion that they were screwed by the system...our opinions have not changed what so ever.

I had NO IDEA about this cover up and I only live 3 hours away from where it happened. Unfortunately the Fed government is more concerned about protecting themselves against liabilities than fixing a problem they are aware of.

Just another example of incompetence and dirty tactics by law enforcement. Nothing new and seems to be getting worse.

Such a bad day. RIP. My son finish RCMP Depot training in Regina one week before the shootings. I still remember it till this day.

Roszko was definitely NOT planning to attack the cops when he went to the farm. If he was, there would have been absolutely no reason for him not to simply drive himself in the pickup, especially if he was suicidal. If he was not suicidal, it still would have made no sense for him not to take a means of escape. The only scenario that makes sense is that he was, in fact, planning for the future, that he thought there might be a way to destroy the evidence of crime and perhaps somehow keep or at least profit from the truck. I think what happened is that he discovered all the evidence had already been removed and there was no hope left of avoiding prosecution. He then watched as the Mounties fed his dogs medicated meat and heard them go quiet. Having no way to know it was only a sedative, he believed they poisoned his dogs, at which point he lost the ability to think rationally. The feeling that everything in life is in an out of control downward spiral can send a person to a very dark place, very quickly, especially if they are sick, hungry, predisposed to psychotic episodes, and have had no sleep. The most reliable witness to speak with Roszko that night described his aspect as desperate and anxious. It was not the aspect of a man who has already made up his mind to go out in a blaze of gunfire, it was the mental state of a man trying every possible way he could think of to get himself out of a bad situation ALIVE and with whatever resources he could hold onto.

If there are more than one shooters, the bullet wounds should be from different directions. Why there is nothing mentioned here? We need more forensic evidence to prove that there are more than one shooter's.

I really enjoy the way Fifth Estate presents information and is constantly reporting on current factual stories and crime. Does anybody know if there's an American equivalent to these guys? A channel that puts out well-researched documentaries like this on a regular basis? If there is, I haven't been able to find it. I feel like our closest comparison would be something like "60 Minutes?" (which I don't consider to be anywhere near being on the same level as FE due to their biased nature and tendency to be swayed by the bogus American mainstream media)

True Crime Daily is good. Can't honestly tell you the reliability of it's resources and the interviewers can sometimes have airhead moments but it's entertaining.

The society is rotting. The thought that I can lead a decent life and one day a knock on my door leads to conviction for murder is disheartening. Capitalism will have to find a new way to deal with the 'NUMBERS' that every employee (including cops) chases so much. We need to look at the real situation on the ground and not just try to impress our bosses or a section of the society. Otherwise Karl Marx will go down as a prophet when capitalism crumbles due to the societal divide between those with power (political and/or economic) and the working class.

Entrapment is when you are coerced, compelled, or otherwise convinced to perform some act that you would not normally do (criminals who get caught doing something illegal when one of the primary witnesses is an undercover police officer usually try to claim the "entrapment" defense but most people don't even know what it means). The Mr. Big garbage is a scam, yes...entrapment, no. In other words, if a guy offers you $10 million to kill someone and you say yes, you would've done so anyway for a lot less money (or a little more sweet-talking and no payoff at all), so it wouldn't be entrapment. It's a very hard legal defense to put forth because you have to prove you wouldn't have ever done what you claim you were "entrapped" into doing.

The RCMP had been harassing him for years but could never get anything to stick. They were obsessed with him and then one day he decided to fight back.

In at 10:39 and I still havn't heard that the young men did anything illegal! I'm confused as to why they're in jail! All I heard was that they have someone a side! But then again it's not over! Oh , now I see, entrapment!!!

I'm only a plumber and a welder by trade, but if I have to put some of my people under a complicated situation as this one, I would make sure that they are protected; but then again I'm only a retired plumber and a welder. it seems that the so called authorities, deemed good enough to leave a couple of guys (with no much experience) to take care of something that looked "kind of complicated". Let me put this way : if I know that my guys can be at any risk dealing with a complicated situation with ANYTHING on my trade, I would be there (surely with some Tim Horton's coffee and donuts) to make sure that they were safe and the job is to be done properly. This "Mickey mouse" authorities didn't do it and we all have to deal with this preventable tragedy. Shame on them, but then again, they we'll have a good career and in the end our taxes will pay for their juicy pensions. Nice, hey?. Greetings from Toronto (in the event the RCMP wants to know).
