Mikolas Matches Skenes But Cardinals Lose - The Bench Is A Real Problem
Спорт
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 2-1 loss to the Pirates from Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
In Ep. 588 of B-Schaeff Daily we discuss the duel between Miles Mikolas and Paul Skenes as the rookie phenom lived up to the billing for the Pirates--but Mikolas matched him stride for stride.
It was the Cardinals offense that disappointed in this one, unable to get to Skenes or the Pittsburgh bullpen in a meaningful way.
Ryan Helsley had a hiccup, but the loss really shined a light on the bench that John Mozeliak has built here in 2024. It left Oli Marmol with precious few real options to deploy resources effectively late in the game.
Oh, and Brenden was struck by airsoft pellets downtown while walking back to his car late at night. True story.

Mikolas actually outpitched Skenes. After the 6th, I thought that the Pirates might sit Skenes and guessed that Mikolas would return to win the matchup (I actually said, "Piss on him.") He did it. 👏🏼 The Cards played a clean defensive game for a change and this formula will win most games.

Hard to blame injuries when the Pirates have like 10 guys injured. That was actually an exciting game to watch, pitching duel, Arenado being Arenado, getting hits off Skenes...so then to lose it felt like the worst loss so far. But then again, I had expected us to lose the Skenes game. I think we still win the series.

The game was lost in the 5th, why you don’t have Herrera hit for pages blows my mind. Then Helsey pitching the 9th. It just seems like if it isn’t a closing situation he seems to give up runs.

If I am remembering right, we had Arenado on third and Donovan on second with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth. I can’t understand why they didn’t bunt to get Arenado home. If I’m missing something and that would have been a bad idea please let me know why. And not because it would have pissed Skenes off 😉

@@Jammin_jennI probably wouldn’t try to bunt Arenado home unless it’s someone like Siani at the plate. Arenado is a painfully slow runner- like Yadi slow almost. It would be hard to get him across there on a bunt unless it’s a perfectly placed bunt- and the only one I think has the best chance to do that would be Siani.

Siani is known for his elite defense. Yet a ball was missed due to a misread. It wasnt like it was over his head. Then Pages drops a ball that was catchable...it was a one bounce ball by Winn. But ultimately, the off-fense. Pitching was very good save Helsley.
Mikolas was outstanding. Shame we have such anemic batting with RISP. Weary of watching and having the air sucked out of the room. Again. Again. Again. And again. I could smell the Helsley failure coming. Romero only threw 7 pitches in the 8th. Give Helsley save situations. Only. It’s a head case and timing thing. So, you think we want to go to the stadium with crap like that happening to you??? Pirates have 3 young elite arms. Cardinals, not so much. At least now. Always Hopium for the future. So, Crawford’s last t at bats resulted in an HR and single, and he’s not an option?

KUDOS TO MM for his gem. This team just sickens me how bad they are.
I checked the month splits for Siani: .254 in May (OPS: .594), .174 (OPS: .384) in June. Carlson is .263 in June (OPS: .701). Marmol had to decide whether to gamble in the 5th or not. If Goldschmidt / Arenado are doing their jobs, they could win while getting some ABs for players that need them.
It's almost as if a weak bench and lack of depth in the rotation are indicators that Cardinals have bigger problems than Oli. Crazy
So I've started to turn in a good way on Oli. But man the front office really isn't making it easy for him
Always a shame to see an outing like Miles's wasted, but at least he outpitched Skenes. Miles seems to never get any run support no matter who's pitching against us. Too many of these close, "what if" losses. We need a long string of blowout wins. Fill some holes, Mo.
Why can’t John Mozeliak put together a roster that doesn’t have such glaring holes? I don’t understand this.

Will later on!
Really glad that we went out in the offseason and bolstered the bench with veteran leadership 37-year-old guys who can't hit (Crawford .162 avg & Carpenter .194 avg). 🙄. Another free agent SS available during this offseason was Ahmed Rosario, who is nearly 10 years younger than the "veteran leader" we picked up, and hitting a .296 avg and .729 OPS. He signed a one year deal just like Crawford only 7 days before when Crawford signed. Poor roster management is the reason why the Cards are in a perpetual cycle of mediocrity.
I see no benefit in having Carlson at the plate over anyone, ever. This team desperately needs another bat and another starter, or it is unlikely to be more than a .500 team. I really hope MO has the insight to see that this should be done sooner rather than later. He has lived by the "let's wait and see" mentality for years now, and that is one reason we are in this situation-he continually hopes that players will improve with little justification to have hope in them.
I keep thinking about the comments from Mo stating they are "pre shopping" or something right now. Not any big acquisitions but maybe a 5th starter or someone who could play centerfield part time ect. I guess my issue with this is let's say we add a 5th starter, are we able to match up to the dodgers, braves, or Phillies? To me it seems our ceiling is getting a wild card spot and departing quickly and then our floor would be 15 games under .500? If ownership/Mo's only option to add to the club is small things like a 5th starter (which im not saying we don't need, its just the same issue we had last year) then its a no brainer to go the opposite way and sell, bolster that farm system and create a team that can be competitive against the elite teams in the NL.
Crazy story outside the stadium, Post it!!!

@@bschaeffer12 Can’t wait! Have you ever thought of making a vlog? I’d love to hear more of your takes on things other than baseball
One third of a major league squad looks just like this. Said it early on and will stand by it. This team can not be saved by a couple of trades.
If this team ever develops a hitter (how is it going at triple A, with a guy without a position, when one of the two or three on the guys who can hit now plays right field?). Let’s face it, we have a number of guys who just cannot consistently deliver. If they have a second half turnaround, then and only then do the Cards have a chance. You can talk of it as a bench problem, but it is a team issue. I agree it is not a Marmol problem. And, were it not an ongoing issue, nights like last night happen: a young pitcher not seen much or at all pitches an excellent game. They win. I do think we should be concentrating on the fact that Mikolas has delivered more than we expected, and he is really fighting, something I did not see last year. If this group can just become more consistent at the plate and the pitchers continue to improve and compete, they still have a chance to make the wild card slot. But, as you suggest (or state) we do need help in depth, both on offense and in the bullpen. The truth is if we were not so discouraged from last year and early this year, we would still be doing our part: ENCOURAGE ‘& SUPP0RT OUR CARDINALS…IT IS ALL WE HAVE. :)
Also I think after finding out Skeens was on the mound this game is marked as a L on calender
This team just too often sits in the 4th/5th/6th inning at 0 runs. It doesn’t matter if a top prospect is pitching or a guy with a 6 era feltner from Colorado, it’s tiresome
To play devils advocate, Burly and Herrera were both supposed to be coming off the bench this year, but Walker’s bad play and Noot and Contreras’ injuries decimated the bench depth. Yeah, Crawford sucks, but a backup shortstop isn’t likely to be a quality pinch hit option regardless. Injuries happen to all teams of course, but coming into the season it definitely looked like we had good offensive depth, so it’s hard for me to knock Mo on that.

@@bschaeffer12 Agreed. No reason to not improve it going forward from here. Once it’s burned you in a game a couple times, time to make a change
The Cards bench is pathetic, Carp is .198, why was Pages (.080) catching instead of Herrera? The bottom of the lineup last night was like putting little leaguers in the game. What joke. This has to change if the Cards are to have any chance of making the play offs. And Listening to MOs comments the other day, doesn't sound like he is any hurry to fix what's wrong.
We don’t work enough walks, we need more guys that can work counts and get walks. But then again I guess you have to be a good hitter to draw walks 🤷🏻♂️ we’ve got problems. Not a big Mikolas fan but the guy deserved a win.

Marmol would rather have his 2nd place hitter be slow-footed and hit homers with no-one on base. instead of putting Winn & Donovan back-to-back and getting a run game "whitey ball" started... If this team scored 1-2 runs via "small ball" every game, in addition to their usual 1-3 runs from the homer, they'd win more games. They had started to do it, (when Donovan & Noot were back-to-back) at 1 & 2. Noot getting injured allowed Marmol to go back to what he loves, long ball/station to station And going crazy with analytics (moving guys up and down) in the lineup 2-3 times a week. Burleson is a good hitter but needs to be 5th or 6th (and stay there).
I did think that they might bat Carlson for Siani in the 5th.

Shame to waste an increasingly rare Mikolas performance. I don’t feel bad for him though. Miles loses more games fo us than he wins. I bet he’s still negative record and has a 5+ era. One or two good performances doesn’t change that. And it isn’t the team letting him down. He’s lost more games in the first 3 innings the last two years than the offense has lost for him.

So weird to see Goldie and Arenado struggle, hope they can get some kind of groove back.
The issue with Oli's bench decision(s) is how it contradicts previous "philosophical" decisions. Example, they brought Winn last week to pitch hit for Crawford and broke his hitting streak (and taking away his off day) because they wanted lefty/righty. If that's the philosophy, and youre going to ignore the feel of the game to go with analytics, then stick to it. That cant be the philosophy one day then not the next...its not a philosophy if you dont stick to it. The Cards have no effing idea what they are doing as an org. From long term decisions like who to keep/trade and who is gong to play what position, all the way to minor decisions like who is going to hit in any particular at-bat...they are making it up as they go.
@bschaeffer12

I will say, Winn vs a lefty versus Crawford vs a lefty was a much more obvious choice per the analytics. These last night weren't. The players involved matters.

If the analytics the Cards are using are telling them to pitch-hit a guy who is 2-2 with a homer for a guy who's supposed to be on a rest day then I dont know what to say. I agree with you that "the players involved matters," which is why the Winn PH for Crawford make no sense to me, since it seems to have been "analytic" driven rather than taking in to consideration the players involved.
