Mikolas Matches Skenes But Cardinals Lose - The Bench Is A Real Problem

Спорт

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 2-1 loss to the Pirates from Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
In Ep. 588 of B-Schaeff Daily we discuss the duel between Miles Mikolas and Paul Skenes as the rookie phenom lived up to the billing for the Pirates--but Mikolas matched him stride for stride.
It was the Cardinals offense that disappointed in this one, unable to get to Skenes or the Pittsburgh bullpen in a meaningful way.
Ryan Helsley had a hiccup, but the loss really shined a light on the bench that John Mozeliak has built here in 2024. It left Oli Marmol with precious few real options to deploy resources effectively late in the game.
Oh, and Brenden was struck by airsoft pellets downtown while walking back to his car late at night. True story.

    Mikolas actually outpitched Skenes. After the 6th, I thought that the Pirates might sit Skenes and guessed that Mikolas would return to win the matchup (I actually said, "Piss on him.") He did it. 👏🏼 The Cards played a clean defensive game for a change and this formula will win most games.

    Hard to blame injuries when the Pirates have like 10 guys injured. That was actually an exciting game to watch, pitching duel, Arenado being Arenado, getting hits off Skenes...so then to lose it felt like the worst loss so far. But then again, I had expected us to lose the Skenes game. I think we still win the series.

    Siani is known for his elite defense. Yet a ball was missed due to a misread. It wasnt like it was over his head. Then Pages drops a ball that was catchable...it was a one bounce ball by Winn. But ultimately, the off-fense. Pitching was very good save Helsley.

    Really glad that we went out in the offseason and bolstered the bench with veteran leadership 37-year-old guys who can't hit (Crawford .162 avg & Carpenter .194 avg). 🙄. Another free agent SS available during this offseason was Ahmed Rosario, who is nearly 10 years younger than the "veteran leader" we picked up, and hitting a .296 avg and .729 OPS. He signed a one year deal just like Crawford only 7 days before when Crawford signed. Poor roster management is the reason why the Cards are in a perpetual cycle of mediocrity.

    I see no benefit in having Carlson at the plate over anyone, ever. This team desperately needs another bat and another starter, or it is unlikely to be more than a .500 team. I really hope MO has the insight to see that this should be done sooner rather than later. He has lived by the "let's wait and see" mentality for years now, and that is one reason we are in this situation-he continually hopes that players will improve with little justification to have hope in them.

  • @bluesfan1700
    @bluesfan170028 күн бұрын

    I keep thinking about the comments from Mo stating they are "pre shopping" or something right now. Not any big acquisitions but maybe a 5th starter or someone who could play centerfield part time ect. I guess my issue with this is let's say we add a 5th starter, are we able to match up to the dodgers, braves, or Phillies? To me it seems our ceiling is getting a wild card spot and departing quickly and then our floor would be 15 games under .500? If ownership/Mo's only option to add to the club is small things like a 5th starter (which im not saying we don't need, its just the same issue we had last year) then its a no brainer to go the opposite way and sell, bolster that farm system and create a team that can be competitive against the elite teams in the NL.

    If this team ever develops a hitter (how is it going at triple A, with a guy without a position, when one of the two or three on the guys who can hit now plays right field?). Let’s face it, we have a number of guys who just cannot consistently deliver. If they have a second half turnaround, then and only then do the Cards have a chance. You can talk of it as a bench problem, but it is a team issue. I agree it is not a Marmol problem. And, were it not an ongoing issue, nights like last night happen: a young pitcher not seen much or at all pitches an excellent game. They win. I do think we should be concentrating on the fact that Mikolas has delivered more than we expected, and he is really fighting, something I did not see last year. If this group can just become more consistent at the plate and the pitchers continue to improve and compete, they still have a chance to make the wild card slot. But, as you suggest (or state) we do need help in depth, both on offense and in the bullpen. The truth is if we were not so discouraged from last year and early this year, we would still be doing our part: ENCOURAGE ‘& SUPP0RT OUR CARDINALS…IT IS ALL WE HAVE. :)

    To play devils advocate, Burly and Herrera were both supposed to be coming off the bench this year, but Walker’s bad play and Noot and Contreras’ injuries decimated the bench depth. Yeah, Crawford sucks, but a backup shortstop isn’t likely to be a quality pinch hit option regardless. Injuries happen to all teams of course, but coming into the season it definitely looked like we had good offensive depth, so it’s hard for me to knock Mo on that.

    Marmol would rather have his 2nd place hitter be slow-footed and hit homers with no-one on base. instead of putting Winn & Donovan back-to-back and getting a run game "whitey ball" started... If this team scored 1-2 runs via "small ball" every game, in addition to their usual 1-3 runs from the homer, they'd win more games. They had started to do it, (when Donovan & Noot were back-to-back) at 1 & 2. Noot getting injured allowed Marmol to go back to what he loves, long ball/station to station And going crazy with analytics (moving guys up and down) in the lineup 2-3 times a week. Burleson is a good hitter but needs to be 5th or 6th (and stay there).

    The issue with Oli's bench decision(s) is how it contradicts previous "philosophical" decisions. Example, they brought Winn last week to pitch hit for Crawford and broke his hitting streak (and taking away his off day) because they wanted lefty/righty. If that's the philosophy, and youre going to ignore the feel of the game to go with analytics, then stick to it. That cant be the philosophy one day then not the next...its not a philosophy if you dont stick to it. The Cards have no effing idea what they are doing as an org. From long term decisions like who to keep/trade and who is gong to play what position, all the way to minor decisions like who is going to hit in any particular at-bat...they are making it up as they go.
