Brenden Schaeffer discusses a bitter pill for the Cardinals to swallow as they were swept Wednesday at Busch in the two-game series and doubleheader against the Royals.
The pitching plan for the Cards honestly made sense on paper, but they just did not quite get enough from their bullpen, or really their offense, to make it sing like they wanted.
The STL bullpen that has been so good had a bumpier day than usual. Neither starter for the Cardinals was amazing, though both kept the team in the ballgame.
It was kind of a weird series loss, and one that feels uncharacteristic to the way the 2024 Cardinals have played for the most part this year. So we did our best to unpack and explain some of what we saw Wednesday.
Plus, Down on the Farm returns with some potential heinous news regarding Tommy Edman... Ugh.

Didn’t you just have a feeling that the Kansas City “series” was a trap. You are tired from the road; you come back and just relax. Unfortunately, I suspect that, like us, they just due a let down. We also know we were winning games but they were not blowouts, sometimes not well pitched. It is what it is. As a Southern Illinoian, one can only hope the magic returns for this final series before the break, which is much needed by everyone, even the younger players. Think of Winn, who has never played a season this long. As to Tommy, I a little heart-broken for the guy: extraordinary intelligence, athletic, and so versatile, with a career likely threatened by the injury or injuries and healing. Even if this season is lost, or the Cards give up on him, my hope is that he somehow finds a way back. As to Grandpa, as one myself and as a believer, faith more than suggests that he is aware and overjoyed at your work. :)

As someone at times disillusioned with the cerebral (overthink) approach, I will support your defense of Olli in the unfortunate Saturday. At times a players (collectively) mind and body is just done. The forces come together, against a team that has some assets. We will not freak out unless we stay down against the Cubs, with a stadium likely filled with more than a few Cub fans. I have never forgotten going to a game in the 1970s (the Cards were not good) with one of my college professors, who proved to be a rather obnoxious Cubs’ fan (from Tennessee, of all places since I thought we owned Tennessee). The Cubs beat the Cards 11 or 12 to nothing, and he talked and ridiculed the Cards for the entire game. He drove, and I could not walk home…it was two hours away. Go Cards! I pray you do not have that “conversation” because the Cards played the Cubs well and won!

We changed the batting order and left Arenado unprotected again, which took away from the momentum of the road trip.

A bummer, but also a bad day on a double header equals two losses.

In terms of Graceffo, was this a possible showcase (for the trade deadline)...

Pallante had a melt down in the 5th after an incredible 4 innings. Not pitching Gray in game 2 felt like a punt. I get the Cubs thing and the rest, but damn.

This team can’t blow 3-0 leads midway through a game. The margins are too slim this season for any success, and it’s gotta be held onto, especially at home.

You know when you impressed me the most? I am an integrity guy; I need to believe I can trust someone, so their integrity matters most. When you took ownership of something we all experience (wwe are human after all): you realized you had made a mistake and owned it! As someone who makes, at the very least, my fair share of mistakes, I can say I appreciated that you owned it rather than just internalizing it. Thank you, once again.

My Grandad to this day is the reason I am a Cards lifer. This team will fail us as the roster is way too flawed.

Royals are really well put together this year. I was wondering how this would play out but the results should not shock. The cards have moves that mus be made.

If it wasn’t clear the cardinals needed a rotation upgrade before, it’s clear as day now.
