Libby Was THAT DUDE For The Cardinals Last Night!

Спорт

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the doubleheader split by the Cardinals against the Braves on Wednesday.
We get into the sadness associated with game one, but only barely, as the masterful performance of Matthew Liberatore seized the day and the conversation in the nightcap.
Exceeding any expectation for his pitch count limit, Libby dominated for six innings of scoreless ball, striking out eight and earning a spot that Oli Marmol extended to him in the sixth that the data said was absolutely the wrong matchup.
But it was a growth experience for Libby. The question is, what do the Cardinals do about it moving forward? And what SHOULD they do about it moving forward?

Happy that Swiss Army knife Libby had such an outstanding start. 4 two out RBI’s thrown in. Looking like a Winning team. Way to come back from the flat like pancake first game. Siani is a Gold Glove CF. Also beginning to figure out this hitting thing. Burly/Donnie en fuego. Roycroft was outstanding. Happy Libby was informed. Fans weren’t. Pallante was listed as the starter on ESPN. Pages needs to catch. A lot. Indeed. “Feel for the game” is a thing. Well done by Olli leaving Libby in. 👍👍 Building confidence is a thing. Love the Hjerpe/Matthews news.

What might be true is that being in the pen may have given him an attackers mentality, which is when he pitches best. Libby gets shelled when he nibbles and tries to reserve his energy. Also he leaned on his slider a lot which made his sinker better, and way more effective than his other pitches.

Put him in the rotation and leave him there until he wainwrights himself out of it. This back and forth biz is killing the kid. Libby took advantage of a generous strike zone, he deserved that kinda break. Tip of the hat to Oli too for this pitching staff looking as good as it has with only 3.5 starters. That rotation is a house of cards and Oli’s done a good job to keep it from totally collapsing.

We've caught glimpses of what this offense can do, but never a sustained attack over time. The same can be said of Libby as a starter although with less fairness. If Libby can keep that mentality and get back in the rotation, it would be a massively positive development for this team. I'd love to see one of our homegrown pitchers pan out for once and I believe we drafted him in the first round.

I know they have a long way to go but I'm proud of this team, they fought through adversity ,a horrible slump and some really obnoxious fans and fought to get over 500 and they're beating good teams now also, they're making me look good for opposing then fire sale so thanks guys! And like I said when I was asking for one change and that was Ollie ,I said prove me wrong and I'll be just fine with it so keep proving me wrong dammit ! Still living on the edge with the starting rotation even though that was a sweet start by Libby, but go get that starter he'll get two if possible

I hope he can contribute more by building off this start, but we'll have to see how the next few starts go. If he continues to improve, great, if not it's back to the bullpen. In the current climate most starters are only looked to for six or seven innings.

Libby deals and if course we all love it. But we've seen this before last year after the Tampa game. Agree with Brenden's take, gotta at least give it another start and at the worst is give the rest of the staff an extra day heading into the break. Fingers crossed Libby found something or maybe a mentality change.

Give Libby another shot starting but don’t let Mo wiggle his way out of acquiring another starter. This team is showing it is typical production of arenado/goldy and a #2 starter away from being a real contender. I don’t know if you can beat the Phillies in a series (idk if any team can) but this team is competitive and is starting to show real depth in position players like it did in in 19 and 21. Get a real #2 starter that’s not a rental and this team is back to competing for tops in the NL!

I would love to see him in the SP role, however it is just 1game(SSS) Then what of Pallante? Gotta go 1 way or the other. I don't know which is better. Look I am very pleased with Libertore, for his performance. As for Gibson it shows how pitchers are a victim of habits or what you make of that. History shows how that works for all pitchers.

I would need know if Libby has figured out a plan and a pitch that get righty’s out consistently. The coaching staff knows this answer and Libby likely does. It wasn’t the case before. It seems like last night he did and does in short spurts. Bottom line…does he have the mix of pitches against a lineup to go through in three time?

Geo... do whatever you have to to get rid of him. Trade. DFA. Need 2 more starters. I think Lynn could be a good trade candidate. What is the status of Edman. I heard he had a setback? With everything clicking the way it is do we want him back. Noot is a good player but my question is how many runs as Siani saved. For every one he saves is like a run scored at the plate. Ozzie Smith was not the best offensive guy ever, his defense kept him on the field. I also feel like Siani is getting better at the plate. Last thing... use Harara as trade bait. Pages is killing it behind the plate. You can tell the pitchers love him. Sorry for the long post. I had some extra time on my hands. Love your show. More people need to sign up.

I think this team is better than what the record reflects. As far as Libby goes I think he could be much better than the way he has been managed. Pen, starter, pen , starter; enough already. I don’t agree with throw as hard as you can for as long as you can when it comes to him. He has good stuff and 94 or 95 is plenty. He doesn’t have to be overpowering to get the job done. His whip is pretty darn good. Let him start and leave him alone and he will be fine. Either that or he becomes like so many of the players we have that leave and excel with other teams. Our offense bothers me more than our pitching. With some of the low averages on the team I don’t see how Gorman is much of a help. He will hit his 25 or so homers but not many guys on base to make it worth while when you consider he is hitting 198 and striking out 2.4 times a game and his defense is decent but not great when it comes to range. He just doesn’t put the ball in play enough. Our center fielder is hitting a little better but he makes up for it with his very important center fielder defense. Time to move on from Carlson even though he doesn’t have much trade value anymore. Pretty sure Goldy and Nado will keep improving offensively and Contreras will be fine. What can you say about Donavan other than wish we had more of him. True grit winner. Good show today. Lots of food for thought.

The organization is obviously pumped…..as they should be. It was a hell of an outing….but, it needs to be cautious optimism. Liberatore has earned another start, but I don’t want this one great outing to be the front office’s answer to avoiding a trade deadline move. Cardinals rotation and bullpen so far has put St. Louis in the playoff picture.…but if the goal is competing with Philly and LA and Atlanta, the Cardinals will need to snag a quality guy to slot behind Gray. In the playoffs, you need at minimum 2 guys at Gray’s level. Cards have Gray and 4 guys that are sort of at the same caliber.

I've always said that if Liberatore would pitch up to his pedigree, people would forget the bad taste of the trade. He is better than Pallante and left-handed. It's time to embrace the future, Donovan, Burleson, Winn, and a couple of others need to be extended as the future core of the team. Get the best pitchers available and trade excess talent quality to get it. Multiple player trade deal like Whitey used to pull off with the White Sox. They have two starters, a reliever and a centerfielder that would beef the Cardinals up to a playoff caliber team. The Sox need multiple young players to rebuild and we have them from Baker, Scott, Saggese, Prieto, and pitchers like Graceffo up to Pallante in some combination People would complain, but look at the players I'm talking about. I'm really glad the offense is finally showing its quality.

@roballen8431 first I said some combination of them, many of which are blocked from the majors by our current stars. Plus, we always want to keep people too long, like Dylan Carlson he went from un-tradable to no one wants him. The Colby Rasmus lesson is an important one. He was un-tradable until we traded him for two average relievers, but they were the missing pieces that took us to and won us the world series that year.
