Just a tennis match, people need to cool down and appreciate their contribution to tennis. They both are great champions.

Seles was healthy at Indian Wells a couple weeks earlier and still lost 6-1, 6-3. Hingis was always a super tough opponent and matchup for Seles, with the exception of mid 98 when Seles got in her best shape since 93, and Hingis was in a major slump and confidence crisis for a bit.

Offcourse. Seles was healthy. Fans of Seles claims Seles was injured in this match just for an excuse about her worse defeat. Seles also healthy in this match aswell. But beaten 6-0,6-0 by Hingis. So shameful to lost the match like this

I remember watching this and constantly asking myself "why is she playing AT ALL?" She was not even moving which against someone like hingis is hopeless. Martina was very embarassed too in her post match interview

INCREDIBLE GAME ON MARTINA'S SIDE!! She's just amazing. Seles could find NO answer.

Monica talks about in her book how she rolled her ankle in the previous match and didn’t want to let fans down or sponsors and she went against her Better interests and played anyway. Her people pleasing personality got her in trouble sometimes she said.

For all those people criticizing Seles' performance in this match, I'd like to point out that at least Monica never ever acted like Martina Hingis did in the '99 French Open final.... not one time. You'd have to be a complete fool not to recognize that Seles was playing on a bum ankle.

Seles never injured. Seles was fit. Only idiot Seles fans like you criticizing others players.

The William sisters were heavier than most of their opponents and Venus won gold in Singles in 2000, and Serena Gold in single in 2012. Monica won bronze at Olympics in 2000. Also the Williams won 3 olympic medals in doubles and numberous other championships in both singles and doubles.

Monica was injured and could barely move. She shouldn't have played the match, but the crowd shouldn't have booed because at least she went out there and tried her best despite her lack of movement. That being said, Monica beat Hingis 3 more times after this defeat and at the end of the rivalry it started to get more even, too bad that when Hingis started to go downhill she quickly retired and Monica never got a chance to beat her some more.

Seles never injured. Don't spread fake injured. Hingis also injured and still beat Seles 6-0,6-0. So nice to watch this match

How was Hingis in a confidence crisis mid 98 when she had just won the Australian Open and had beaten Venus in the quarters at the French. Monica took her out at the French in straight sets because she was aggressive and fit. But Seles was unfit for probably most of Hingis rise and fall. They were just at two different places in their careers.

Seles doesn't move as well as Serena, not even pre-stabbing. Hingis was in her prime and she took out a lot better players than Monica during this time. And as good as Martina was she still retired 2 years later. 😂

Monica did great during her career beating numberous top players including Chris Evert, Martina Navritolova, Gabriella Sabitina, Steffi Graf, A.S.Vicaro, Jana Novotna, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capritati, Justine Henin, Kim Clisters and Lindsay Davenport among others.

This was the second time Seles lost 6-0, 6-0 to Hingis. The first time happened in 1996. There were definite kinks to Monica's game. I remember that Graf beat Seles 6-1, 6-0 in 1989.

Monica has lost 6/0 6/0 against Martina only once in Miami, in 1989 duringin R16 in Wimbedon 6/0 6/1 she was 15 years old, she was a bird compaire to Steffi.

At this time few men were grunting but they didnt stop them. They stop Monica Seles cause was the mumber ONE. Her Wimbledon till the final was FANTASTIC. IN the final wasnt the real Monica, and dont tell me Steffi is a grass player.

Dustin Gabe i agree. Steffi definitely had the better grass court game than Monica, but Monica was the better clay court player.

I still remember Hingis's arrogant fans claiming they knew she would come back and dominate since the Williams were in a slump at the time and that Henin, Sharapova, Mauresmo, and Clijsters would be supposably easy for her to dominate. Boy were they ever wrong.

oh monica- you are out of shape so cant move properly anyway- then you are injured on top of that- did you really think you was going to win? let alone the sheer embarrasment sometimes you gotta think of number one like serena

Monica should have retired this match as she did her ankle in :-(

Hingis tried a comeback in 2006 and 2007 and didnt do very well. She was smart to retire in 2002, she was already a has been, and stupid to try and comeback at all years later when she was clearly an early bloomer and way past her prime. Seles herself retired in mid 2003 so wouldnt have had many more chances to play the fading Hingis even had she continued though.
