Seles was 41:0 in Australia before that match. Now that is something no Graf, Williams or anybody ever achieved.

True: but many players have accomplished what others have not. Seles is not alone by any means in accomplishments.

@@markuse3472 But why is it forbidden to mention what Monica accomplished? I think she deserves that as does any other player with similar staggering records. Anyway, this is the place this statistics is supposed to be mentioned for the winning streak ended right here.

Martina's forehand was the weaker side, but she was killing Seles here with the fh down the line.

Hingis exploited Monica's weakness which was her movement and it was especially noticeable how slow she was after the stabbing carrying extra weight all the time

italo36 Yup she used a lot of down the line shots using Monica’s spin.

Yes, psychology might have affected Monica's post-stabbing career performance. But there were other factors, too, that might have contributed to her downfall. She got taller, heavier, her father was dying of cancer, and the other players were just hitting the ball much harder and were running faster. I think the fact that she did not return to game sooner was what really hurt her. In the time she was gone, the women's game had evolved, and her absence from competition made her oblivious to this. Thus, when she came back, she did well initially but she really couldn't keep up.

What was the controversy in the stands (or something) that got Hingis so mad?

She was old and past her prime. Graf was too. The Graf-Seles era was long over by now, even though Graf won a semi fluke slam at the French this year.

tyler bam I agree wholeheartedly. It’s really sad to see the post 93 Monica. In the 93 Australian Monica would have beaten Serena and any others. She had very quick feet and strong serve and perfect concentration which is a lethal combination. Serena is probably the best but would she have beaten the 93 version of Monica ? Maybe on grass but I’m not sure of any slower surfaces.

hingis was never a good matchup for monica, but monica was well below the fitness level she needed to be at to beat Hingis here

Eido yup. And whenever she was fit (1998, 2001) she would beat Hingis. Unfortunately most of the time she wasn’t.

For sure, Martina was delighted to play against Monica whom she had beaten on and on... It would have been a different story against Steffi...

i agree theres a level of calmness when hingis plays seles but against Graf she was just tight I mean at the french open final she was a set and 2-0 up and she went over the net to check a call - she really wanted that win

olaraay the audience played a big role though. Martina was way more popular in Australia than she was in France. And Graf played better at the French that year than she did at the AO.

martina hingis matched monica like evert did.. it's about match ups .. monica coulda won more titles or even slams if martina didn't keep beatin her up out there! and of course, in steffi's absence from 97 to 2000 before the black sisters invasion, monica coulda taken over.. but it was martina who took advantage

steffi despite havin a weak bakhand, was too tough for martina hingis but then martina is good at counterpunchin harder shots of monica and bullyin her with her varieties..

Monica didn't play half the tennis she did against Graf here :((... Hingis dictated way to much, but hingis at her prime was a very clever player against all the top players apart from davenport!
