I feel as though Lindsay Davenport was one of the most well liked players by fans and the other players, so gracious in victory or defeat and an amazing all court game. And she didn't sound like a banchee when she hit the ball! Really miss watching her on the tour

Look at Davenport's smile as she shook Hingis's hand. There are not many players who would react like that, but Lindsay is such a lovely woman, she can't help but be pleased for Martina.

it boggles my mind at how Hingis was only 19 yo at this time and have achieved so much. compared to WTA tennis these days, a teenager dominating the tour? it's like otherworldly talk.

Master class. always makes me wonder, despite not having a power shots she knows how to confound her opponents.

wonderful, I just wish Martina played with that much gusto against the top 5 all the time. sometimes I guess she was so confident of her strategy she forgot she also needed to hit the ball harder!

what hingis lacked was an effective defensive slice backhand ... thats what justin does so well , negates the power by slicing whenever in defence and pulled out wide very hard to win a winner from a low slicing shot -

You are spot on with your observation about Henin. Her topspin backhand always received so much attention, but it was her slice backhand which kept her alive in points against bigger hitters, coupled with her tremendous speed.

Yeah sometimes it would float too much, but usually she only went to the slice when the ball was very out of reach to the point where she couldn't undercut the ball as much as she needed to.

If only Hingis had a bit of power in her serve and forehand she could have been the greatest player ever.

I remember watching this match. This was played less than two months after Davenport cleaned Hingis's clock in the Aussie final 2000. Lindsay was expected to win again and beat Hingis. But Davenport had a very long, exhausting match in the sems against Sandrine Testud in 3 long sets, which tired her out. Hingis still had to win it in 3 sets, but otherwise Davenport would've blown Hingis off the court again. To Lindsay's credit, she never pulled any BS excuses about injury or a long match.

    Hingis won this 6-3, 6-2.

shihlin1... are you sure about not making any sorts of excuse? Davenport actually hinted that she's tired when she said something like "You have to be 100% to beat someone like Hingis."

at this point these 2 thought they would dominate the womens game then along came venus and serena who tightened the screws and kept their unforced errors down and changed the game

I wonder why Martina didn't hit through her forehand like 2:40 anymore. Her constantly loopy forehand could not finish the point although it did a decent job to force someone like Venus into making a lot of donations.

+Jo Nathan I guess she couldn't trust herself to keep the error count down. On the backhand side, the extra hand gives her a bit more control, so she could go for her shots a bit more. It's one of the most frustrating things as a Hingis fan; she never really worked on her weaknesses. If she beefed up her serve and her forehand, she could've beaten Davenport and the Williams sisters on a regular basis.

It's the 2nd serve and the forehand. Let's say we can only pick one to improve, then it is definitely the forehand side. Sigh...

+dg70philuk Yes, and also if Davenport needed three sets to beat Testud, I'm doubt she would have been in good enough form to beat a hungry Hingis even if she weren't tired.
