Martina was my favorite player 20 years ago... But my heart was secretely in love with Monica. Now I definitely love Monica for all she's representing. Hingis will stay THE MAGICIAN of this time. And Seles will always be the GOAT. Very unique and special player. With a big scar in her back and in her heart. ❤️

Dang, look how far inside the baseline Hingis is standing. Monica ain't playing patty-cake tennis yet Hingis is taking the ball so early. Hingis's mother strategy was to take time away from Monica by exploiting her slowed mobility. And it worked.

To those commenting on Monica's weight - this was an issue that raised its head before the stabbing. I remember back in 1991, many in the press were pretty ungracious and commented on how Monica had put on weight. Monica herself at the time said she was "addicted to butter". We don't often understand just how stressful playing at the top of the sport it, and how it affects different players. With Monica, it seems she turned to comfort eating from a relatively young age.

Yes and when you combine her turning into an adult which she wasn't yet pre stabbing and growing into her body with the factors you said, and perhaps even more importantly that from 94-98 her dad being ill with cancer and having a long drown out, illness, and death, and I would say the chances of her not gaining a lot of weight are next to nil. Maybe without the stabbing she would be a bit less big, I don't know, but the delusions she would still be a stick figure are quite fantastic.

Watching Hingis play, I'm constantly reminded to stay inside the baseline and look for opportunities to move forward to finish the point faster. Theoretically Seles should've won this match, but Hingis just kept Monica off balance by coming in to the net to finish points with volleys.

It amazes me that Seles didn't beat Hingus more.. Yeah she could have been a little faster and fitter but Hingus showed she was really that good back then...elusively.. Everyone struggled to beat her because she anticipated and ran down everything..wearing them all down. I was a big Seles fan and the fact she wasn't like top 3 then shows how the level had increased big time by then. Being 6 was good though.. But Hingus was 1 for a reason

@@DavidS-lg4dr People have a misconception of Hingis today and say all the big hitters owned her. This isnt true, the only big hitter with a clear winning record against her is Davenport, and even that isnt total ownage, something like 10-7. She has a winning record vs Venus, and is only down 6-7 vs Serena. She has lopsided winning records vs not only Seles but Pierce as well. Granted if she kept playing after 2002 she probably has a more lopsided losing record to Serena, but still.

Unfortunately for her this was the time where the women were 6' 2..6'3 compared to little Martina at 5'7" but Martina NEVER beat herself...you had to take her out. Still hurt seeing her lose to this day..wah wsh i know😂...she won 25 grand slam titles..of course combined singles mixed and doubles. She messed up in 2007 by them finding a metabolite of Cocaine in her test but a 2 year suspension!!!??? Wow... Lindsey Davenport who she is good friends w called it doping. Maybe it is if u fail any drug test in the WTA but doping to my small mind means what Lance Armstrong did or what Simona Halep ( allegedly) or Mark McGuire did taking steroids. Thats trying to gain an advantage toward ur sport. How is Martina doing a line of Cocaine doping????? Im 100% sure she wasnt using it b4 a match!!! Shes too smart for that and it sounds ridiculous. It's pretty obvious that Monica Seles was at her heaviest as seen here in the quarter finals of the US Open in 1998. Not only her mobility was hampered as a result of the access weight but she suffered various foot and knee injuries as a result of it. Had she not been stabbed and gained at least 30kgs during her forced 2 1/2 year break from tennis, she could have had least won 20-25 Grand Slams.

Looking at how Monica had extra weight pretty much all the time after the stabbing, It’s frustrating because she would have won many of these matches. She’s literally a step slower on every ball. Meanwhile in her 40s she looks so skinny. I guess when she cameback she never got over the stabbing and mentally/physically wasn’t as dedicated. She also wrote a book about how her depression caused her to over eat.
