Should admire both of them..though Graf was just months off from announcing her retirement the talent thats in her is still evident..the fact that such big names the likes of kournikova, davenport, seles and hingis were all beaten by her is very impressive..and that is why she is the GOAT for me..

Thx for uploading this amazing match! who would have thought that this batte would be their last . Two all-time greats who both had this extraordinary determination to dominate. What they showed here was worth being their last fight. In my eyes its one of their best matches. Graf just returning after a two-years-period of very serious injuries . Facing her greatest rival Seles , she played even better as she did later in the final. Its a pleasure to see her game in a lot of moments at peak: Her forehand works the way that once shocked her opponents in 1988 and 1989. The slice is played agressively, giving Steffi the opportunity to play forehand strokes from all over the court. The same to say about Monica, shooting her double handed power strokes from everywhere, doing angles that only her could do. Yea, i agree completely: those were the golden days of womens tennis. Evert, Navratilova, Sabatini, Sanchez, Seles , Hingis, the William sisters. What a competition compared to those boring years following when Serena didnt have any serious opponent. Graf finished age 30. For me its not of any question that she would have won some more majors if she wouldnt have resigned just some time later. I miss them both big time!

I remember this match very well. Monica had very powerful shots here, as usual. But eventually Steffi had developed the right strategy to beat Monica using her short crossed slice backhand very successfully (except on rebound ace surface where Monica's game was much more efficient) If Steffi could have served even harder and used her top spin backhand down the line more often - like Roger Federer does-, very few players would have beaten her.

I agree! I truly believe the early 2000's was the Golden Age of women's tennis, so to speak. I mean, look at all the champions that were playing at the same time. Besides the ones you mentioned, we also had Amelie Mauresmo, Conchita Martinez, Davenport, and around '04 we got Kuznetzova and Sharapova. Amazing time.

Completely agree. As someone who's been watching tennis for over 30 years, the golden era was def mid 90's to early 2000's. And I would also say a golden era was late 80's to "93" when Graf, Seles, Navratilova, Capriati, Sanchez-Vicario and Sabatini were all in the mix.

On clay seeing these two pushing themselves with senses of urgency to play, if possible, with even more power plan of execution and precision and consistency of serve, as I'd imagine, but also with improved mobility, as I can see Steffi's low cutting and driving slice 🍰 really is scooting and staying low and stretching Monica consistently way out wide from the short court is gonna wear Seles down in the final telling well played amazing set. Steffi is truly a warrior.

@@richardross4677 i wouldnt quiet say that there was no depth. graf de-throned the two players, which were dominating the tour: evert and especially navratilova. the latter was considered that time as almost unbeatable: she was so dominant cause she revolutionized womens tennis with here agressive serve and volley - style. plus a new athletism. same refers to graf: she didnt win a lot these years because there was no depth. with evert, navratilova, sabatini, sanchez, she had some serious opponents. but graf just played in another universe that time. never before there was stroke like her forehand, never before there was such an athletism in a female player, never before there was a female player who was so fast. plus: graf had that time this natural selfconfidence of young champion coming up, not thinking, just playing. for those if you who never saw matches this period: just watch the wimbledon final 1988 graf-navratilova. the same refers to seles. with graf she had a great rival. all those three players mentioned (navratilova, graf, seles) didnt win because there was no depth, they won because they were so dominant by their own skills.

Steffi was stronger both mentally and physically than Monica. The tragic stabbing incident just brought to the fore Monica's mental health issues. Even without that event happening Graf would still have accumulated a far superior head to head against Seles due to her better all round court skills. Still both of them were a joy to watch

Rubbish. Prior to the stabbing Seles' superior mental toughness wad shoeing and she had Graf's number and starting to dominate. Had Seles not been stabbed she'd have probably won more Slams than any other player male or female. Seles never got her physical fitness back after the stabbing, her fire had been forever dampened by a lunatic and the sport was robbed of what would undoubtedly been a great rivalry. Even after being out for three years and carrying two extra stone in Wright Seles still pushed Graf all the way.

@@rolymier8659 Rubbish. Seles had her number before the stabbing. It wasn't life threatening but it was life destroying you idiot. She was cut down in her prime, a young athlete scared for her life that a Graf fanatic could approach her and stab her on a tennis court, in a crowded venue. If yiu don't think that impacts then you're a nut. Seles basically spent 2 years in the house eating, seriously impacted by the disgusting thing that happened to her. She was flying with confidence before the stabbing, was undisputed No.1, had beaten Graf in 3 out of 4 Slam finals and would have become more and more difficult for the others to beat. Steffi is always superior than Monica. If you could observe their game, steffi most of the time hitting the ball to the same side of where Monica was standing.. and these gets advantage for Monica. Whenever Steffi hits the Ball on other side Steffi easily won.. also unnecessarily using her slow backhand in important points.. I was surprised why her coach didn't advise steffi not to do the same.. or Steffi herself didn't understand her mistakes..

Seles played just as good as before the stabbing. May be she is heavier but that is not an excuse against Steffi. Even before the stabbing, when Steffi was on, Seles could not beat her. After dominating so long, it is natural for your form n your mental strength going down...reasons Steffi lost more to other players but still Seles could not dominate her.

The stabbing unfortunately took its toll on her mentally and physically, IMO. Had she never been stabbed, I don't think she would have been out of tennis shape at this point in her career, would have won about 20 more GS titles than her final count of 9 (making it about 29 or 30 career titles or more, no kidding) if she had played until about age 30, and would be the GOAT today. How do I figure that? Well, she won 8 GS titles before turning age 20, between ages 16 and 19, or an average of 2 per year. Had she never been stabbed and played until about age 30 (in better shape mentally and physically), that would equal 2 per year x 10 years, or 20, added to her 9 (including the ''96 Australian Open). So her final career total for GS titles should really be about 29 (or more); therefore, theoretically, she should be the GOAT today, way more than Court, Serena, or Graf. Plus, Graf would have won many less GS titles since Graf won so many in Seles' 2-1/2 year absence after the stabbing. Such a sad story. Long live Monica!!

Yoga I don't think so... Monica's game was developing immensely at the beginning of 93... she was serving stronger faster and with more aces, had grown 4 cm from 1990-93... was learning to adapt to the grass too she would've certainly won Wimbledon at least three times! Monica's main strength was her backhand crosscourt hit hard and with angle going to the forehand of a right-hander (she was lefty) However if you are too slow and fat...to get into the position to hit it, it effectively renders your game powerless! And that is what you see if you compare matches played before the stabbing and after the stabbing! had it NOT been for the stabbing she would clearly be on 25+ slams! Anything she did after her return in 1995 including the Australian open win, were affected by the 8 kg of weight she was carrying! The psychological effect of the stabbing made her Comfort eat... I really do believe that the most successful tennis career in history was destroyed that fateful day in April 1993! And anyone who is not able to see that is just plain and clearly kidding themselves! It doesn't matter how much of a fan of Graf you are... The reality is that Monica will always be the true, rightful GOAT! GRAF IS THE STABBING GOAT! GRAF IS Stab number no1 It's wonderful to see a player like Serena Williams winning and becoming the greatest tennis player ever, on her own merits I repeat....OWN HER OWN MERITS!!!!
