    Chris is 34 here and she never lost her speed or her smooth graceful power she could have played in the 90's if she liked and been very formidable but I also respect her classy retirement timing ❤❤

    Chris was playing herself back into form that Spring after suffering a bad injury in 1986 that kept her off the tour after the US Open. She had a shock loss to Kate Gompert on her return in February 1987. She then won 34 of her next 37 matches, her only losses being here, in Miami to Graf and then at the French Open to Navratilova. During that streak she won 4 tournaments and won 20 consecutive matches.

    You see Zvereva here using a lot of heavy topspin moonballs, much as Monica Seles did against Chris in 1989. It sas known on the tour that Chris hated heavy topspin - her whole stroke mechanics were based on backing off and letting the ball drop, which often left her well behind the baseline or pulled wide off court. There was one famous point at the 1989 US Open where Monica Seles hit a moonball to Chris and Chris moved so far back that she hit the stands and the ball bounced over her head.

  • @lenwelch2195
    @lenwelch21952 ай бұрын

    The wind took that ball out as the fence was 18 feet behind the baseline . The ball bounced very high after it landed and wind took it , no way to hit on rise on that particular ball.

    I wish Gaby would have won this one. Had it only been best of 3, she would have, but it was best of 5. She still could have won but as Carillo said early in the first set, Gaby had bouts of defensive play. Had she played her aggressive style, the outcome could have been different. I think Seles brain worked so differently than any player in history. She didn't necessarily "look" athletic, but she was one of the best movers out there. Most importantly, her reaction to move to a shot was superior to almost any other player at the time. Then instinctively knowing what to do with the ball was just breathtaking to watch. Whereas it seemed like Gaby had to take a quick moment to process before actually moving then when she finally got to the ball, she would hit a defensive shot many times right back to the opponent.

    Yes I totally agree with you, Steffi Graf won on all four grand slams surfaces at least 4 times and held the no.1 ranking for 377 weeks more than anyone else in history, and last but not least won all four grand slams and Olympic olympic gold medal in the same calendar year , the golden slam, that's why Steffi Graf is the greatest womens tennis player of all time 👍

    Oddly enough, this was Monica's only win against Jana on clay. Jana had two wins and a walkover on clay in her favour. Clay actually seems to have helped Jana's game against Monica. It took the sting off Monica's shots and allowed Jana to manoeuvre her around with her slice backhand.

    Thanks for the upload, Monica is probably my favourite player of all time. So interesting to see in her earlier days favouring her backhand, and using the moonball against Evert knowing that Chris hated moonballers. In her later career Monica greatly improved her serve and her forehand, it's just such a shame that the infamous Hamburg incident robbed her of her full potential.

    Tu Cindy C for this great channel!!! I love the Swiss Miss and u have plenty of her matches. I miss the late 90's and players like Hingis who were so intelligent and competitive. Unfortunately for her this was the time where the women were 6' 2..6'3 compared to little Martina at 5'7" but Martina NEVER beat herself...you had to take her out. Still hurt seeing her lose to this day..wah wsh i know😂...she won 25 grand slam titles..of course combined singles mixed and doubles. She messed up in 2007 by them finding a metabolite of Cocaine in her test but a 2 year suspension!!!??? Wow... Lindsey Davenport who she is good friends w called it doping. Maybe it is if u fail any drug test in the WTA but doping to my small mind means what Lance Armstrong did or what Simona Halep ( allegedly) or Mark McGuire did taking steroids. Thats trying to gain an advantage toward ur sport. How is Martina doing a line of Cocaine doping????? Im 100% sure she wasnt using it b4 a match!!! Shes too smart for that and it sounds ridiculous. Yes it gives you energy but not so much in any sports related way imo.

    What a match!!! Monica taking the ball so early and hitting her angles, and Gaby ripping one handed backhands like no one else could, and attacking the net with athleticism and elegance. Just wow. Gaby really penetrated the court well here, punishing her groundstrokes off both sides and hitting hard well placed first serves. Monica showing how fit and resilient she was. Gaby was so strong she could handle the pace of Seles. Gaby had her chance to take it in 4. Both had their chances in 91 but young Monica would have quite the career. If only Gaby always played like this. She’d have won so many more big titles.

    Seles here plays with no nerves. 5 months later Vintage Evert showed Monica just how great an all timer she was - above Seles. 6-0,6-2. Evert will go down in top 5 woman players of all time. Serena , graf navratolva evert Seles. Court doesn’t belong in top ten with 11 Australians beating Jane Lebanese a local 5 -6 times. Even Chris beat court at 15 just after court won grand slam with kingher only real opponent.
