There were some famously brutal beatdowns by Hingis against Seles. She beat her love and love in Miami that year, so to have this match just a few months later was a delight for everyone. My only gripe about this highlight reel is that we don't ever know what the score is. That isn't the creator's fault, it's just me thinking out loud (on KZread lol). Great match! Makes me miss the good ole days!

+Justin Cartwright Monica was leading 7:6 4:2, but then she got a bit tired and Hingis turned it around (6:7; 6:4; 6:4). The commentator at Eurosport said beforehand this match wouldn't last more than an hour, but he was fortunately wrong.

Definitely agree, great match, it was close and Monica did play great in parts and fought hard, Hingis also on top form and Monica seemed to have trouble anticipating her shots, but the major difference was fitness & monicas movement was like my dads at times, not that of an athlete

Monica never played at pre stabbing level ! See how slow she was now in the video.

beavertown2006 well this was 7 years after 93, so you couldn’t have expected her to get faster as she’s older lol but she made that resurgence in 01_02 beating Venus in Australia and Martina a few times. She shoulda got the Australian that year Capriati got to final...

Seles was so out of shaped here. she used to hit shots so sharp that it jerks her opponent left and right. I'd she weren't stabbed Hingis will not have an edge on her. seles was unstoppable before her game evolved so much in the year 1993 were her shots were sharper and harder.

she doesn't need to have excellent strategies (Hingis is better in that)..but Serena can hit winners from anywhere on the court, so that doesn't matter..

any top player at their peak beats the shit out of Martina. She couldnt even handle a peak Capriati in 2001 and 2002. The most overrated player in history probably.

Markus McManus martina was not at her peak in 2001 and at her best would smash Capriati. Martina had mental problems in slam finals after 99 FO. She held match points there and also against Capriati in AO final.

I would of like to watch this but your kinda in nomansland in the game because you don't know the score

@@rolandgreen7484 Yeah, Seles was not at all liked pre stabbing. Lousy handshakes after matches and lots of weird comments in press conferences. She was far more gracious post stabbing. Sabatini, Clijsters and Kvitova all stand out to me as nice people (of the GS champions at least).

Serena is a very underrated tactician though. Martina's problem is people like Serena and Venus are also so smart on court, they are like Hingis with much more power.

@whfan007 I agree. I love Monica and I supported her throughout her whole career, but this was painful to watch. Monica was out of shape and still managed to push the very best to their limits and sometimes beat them. Had she been physically in shape, she could easily have dominated until the Williams sisters reached their best

Serena is indeed very much underrated in the strategy department. But once again, numbers say it all. There's no top 5 player ever who has beat her more times than she have beat them, except for a couple of players which she once or twice played against when young. Otherwise Serena has dominated the most powerful (e.g. Venus, Sharapova) to the most tactical (e.g. Hingis, Henin). There's no one who has beat her most than 3 times in a row (only Henin and Venus). In fact, the best strategist now.

Seles usually had no chance against Hingis and that 6:0, 6:0 result - what a shame for a champion like Seles.I think that even Seles at her best, like in 1992, would have problems with overcoming Martina at her best!
