    Just ordered one, looking forward to checking it out. The 7 gauge is what sold me. As a hobbyist fabricator as well, 7 gauge will make this bench bomber, regardless of the weight out on it. Heavy, yes, but I don’t care about that. Expensive, yes, but also a key part of any gym, regardless of your discipline, be it bodybuilding, powerlifting, etc. Thanks for the review.

    Thanks for the review. Would have liked to hear more about the areas it falls short, other than the mention of the plastic handle as a missed opportunity. For example, the inability to flip the leg catch over for Nordic work, as advertised on the much cheaper Rep Blackwing. I don't have good experiences with Rep benches, but it seems like a major oversight on the Manta Ray if the only necessary change to make Nordic's a possibility would be an additional hole on the opposite side of the catch post.

  • @MattPendergraph

    @MattPendergraph

    Жыл бұрын

    You can definitely flip over the leg catch and perform the Nordic Curls BTW, you just can't technically lock it into position due to the pop-pin hole is only on one side (at least that's how it is on my review model). As far as the points I make in my video...the plastic handle, lack of color options, and high price-point are what personally stood out to me and my specific interests. I tried to cover as much ground as possible without being too long-winded and drawn out, but the end of the day it's virtually impossible touch on everything only because everyone's interests/curiosities are going to be different which is the main reason I encourage people asking questions in this comment section. I'll probably end up making a follow up/use-style video in the future as well as comparing it to other company offerings if their is enough interest in it. I appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching!

  • @billchurch4460

    @billchurch4460

    You can do Nordic curls without having the foot catch secured. Based upon my experience, the foot catch isn't going anywhere. That''s the case on my AB-3, at least, and I suspect the same holds true with this bench. If you want to secure the foot catch, you would need to drill a hole. Having said that, I agree that it should come with a hole on each side.

    While you have a nice gym and camera skills, I don't really feel like I came out of this video knowing if this bench is for me. Considering you've had this bench for months I'm not hearing much insights on what it's like to use regularly or what kind of quirks to expect that only someone who has used it intimately would be able to provide. It was nice to get some great shots of the bench but I would like a bit more thoughts on what's good, what's bad, and what can been improved of to be aware of that's not as obvious. Thanks for the video!

  • @MattPendergraph

    @MattPendergraph

    I approached this review based on the assumption that the majority of people watching has some prior experience with basic ladder-style benches, especially if they are even remotely considering purchasing one at such a high price point. I was also hoping that by pairing multiple shots/angles of the bench with my own personal thoughts along the way would paint a nice overall picture and give my audience an idea as to what to expect out of the bench. At the end of the day, the Manta Ray is pretty straight forward ladder-style bench, just at much more premium/over-built level (not too many bells and whistles here beyond what I focus on in the video). As always, I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have, just let me know. Thanks for watching.

    Nice review Matt. As we spoke about, Rogue really needed to offer customization in order to compete with folks like REP, PRIME, LEGEND, EliteFTS etc. All of these companies offer color options which at this price point should have been a no brainer. The build on this looks insane but if I compare this to my Rogue 3.0 in red with stainless ladder the build of the Manta just doesn’t seem enough for the extra $$$ when one considers the 3.0 is an absolute tank and aesthetically, gorgeous. Lastly, Rogue needs to be a bit careful on possibly offering color options ( after initial release ). If I’m a buyer of an $1100.00 bench with only black offered and a month later color options are available…I’m not a happy customer. Thanks again for your work 👏👏

    Hey Matt, after using the manta ray, I would still buy the ab3. I think it’s a better bench. Manta ray is heavy duty and very nice but I think the ab3 is better overall. The gap is a non issue and the aesthetic, weight, sturdiness/stability are all in the ab3(nautilus) favor. I would encourage you to test an ab3 if you haven’t. While not using as much steel, I think the way it’s welded together and designed just creates more stability in use.

    So while I don't own an AB-3, I have used one a few times in the past. It's certainly not a bad bench (and if you love it then that's perfectly fine! You do you man) to me it just feels incredibly dated compared to other/newer designs on the market, not to mention the fact that it utilizes a pop-pin style system (I absolutely HATE pop-pin adjustment systems! 😂)

  • @jackviviano7231

    @jackviviano7231

    Sure, the AB-3 is based on the highest rated utility bench of all time the Nebula 1080/awesome bench. And yes the way the two steel brackets hold it flat is very stable. For me it has never failed in 6 years and the quality is second to none. I do think the pad gap of the Manta Ray is the ONE big improvement. But thats the ab-3 only downside. The Pop pin is actually advantage over the ladder in my book as it NEVER goes out of position or has degraded. I think they both seem like great benches but I doubt anyone owning an AB-3 would replace it.

    @@jackviviano7231 Appreciate your insight! I'm sure that's why Rogue has kept it around for all these years. Obviously it'll ultimately come down to personal wants/needs and budget of course. In the grand scheme of it all I don't think anybody can go wrong with purchasing a bench from Rogue!

    @@reconstructionwouldhavesav9472 I want the ab3! I guess that’s more than nobody. I’ve actually now used both the Ab3 and the manta ray. Hands down without question the ab-3 is 100 percent superior, in my opinion of course. Remember, the wheel is also dated and still does the job better than any other option. I find the ab3 more stable and solid, likely because it is welded and comes as a single unit. Manta ray is still good, but still doesn’t quite overtake the wheel.

    Good info. Solid review. But at $1400 shipped I think I would just rather have 2 AB 3.0s. I would potentially consider it in the future if they came out with more color ways, but at this point my AB 3.0 is still looking pretty good it’s already a tank.

    Thank ya Mr. Carp! While the Manta is fantastic bench, I believe most people won't be able to justify the cost and simply don't need this much bench and will be more than satisfied with Rogue's 3.0 line!

    Don't think this one can be called FID bench as the back pad does not decline. With the help of leg rollers, you can do decline work, but the transition from incline to decline is not as smooth as the traditional FID bench. You have to move the bench 180 degree to do decline. Not that convenient considering it weighs over 140 lbs.

  • @MattPendergraph

    @MattPendergraph

    Жыл бұрын

    Oh yeah, I definitely agree with you! While this method of decline isn't the most ideal to set up in comparison to just dropping the back pad into a decline, it's just one of those things that Rogue and a few other companies have been utilized for several years now. As someone who RARELY (if ever, lol) decline presses, I personally prefer this style over the traditional because of the vertical support post at the head of the bench which allows it be stored upright without having to depend on the back pad for support and it adds to the overall stability while in the flat position.

    @@MattPendergraph I agree the storage of traditional FID is difficult. I was expecting this bench to be the ultimate FID bench that is sturdy in every position (even decline) and can be stored vertically, but it just turns out to be a ladder-style AB-3.

    When I do decline sit-ups at 60° I use my pull-up bar on my rack to swing myself on top. I'm 6'2", so for decline bench, it's a non-issue. I currently have the ab5000, but I should be receiving my Manta in 2 to 3 months lol
