    Hey you guys are so great - just love your shows. I want to add something. This is about 'Faith' and 'Belief'. I am a retired Army officer so my story is related to my experiences. So I have faith in a weapon or some kind of war fighting method which have worked well in the past. But things go horribly wrong. It happens because the other guys have invented better weapons and methods! So we lose faith about our own systems. That is why 'Faith' is good. It gives us space to change. 'Belief' is dangerous. The Cavalry was considered the ultimate weapon to defeat the enemy. It was a belief. During the First World War large numbers of Allied Cavalrymen were shot down by German machine gunners. The Allied Commanders said that the use of machine guns against horses was unfair. They believed that their horsemen would win but please do not use machine guns. That is why 'Belief' is dangerous. It allows one to take decisions without reason!

    Also it makes me very sad to hear people laugh at a person who is that confused, this is what religion can do to people especially when the real world collides with what they were indoctrinated with. I have seen people become stuck in this confused state for years before they could fight their way out of it. Thank you Jamie for being so patient and sweet, I understand that not everybody can be that way but they could also not laugh at a person who is in genuine distress.

    That's because people put out subtle hints via how they speak via, tone, pacing, volume at which they speak, etc, which can be picked up even when talking on the phone, listening to a voice mail, etc. Likewise, we have the ability to pick up on other people's, body language, facial expressions, etc, none of which has to do with the supernatural.

    @acceptjesusorburn That may be the case. But the people that think they have had a supernatural experience have NOT actually had a supernatural experience. It is simply a case of they cannot explain what they saw or experienced so instead of saying I do not know what that was and seeking answers they just assign a supernatural cause. Every supernatural claim that has been properly investigated has been found to have been natural. So the problem is one of people not being confident enough to simple say I do not know.

    The caller literally has no critical thinking skills. Nope, nein, nada. What he wants to believe, he believes without thinking; what he finds uncomfortable to believe, he sweeps them aside despite empirical evidence. It's no use talking to this type of person; you might as well talk to a donkey.

  • @ernestmac13
    @ernestmac136 жыл бұрын

    This caller demonstrates the dangers belief and faith, the further down the magical thinking rabbit hole you travel; the more removed from reality you become. In as much the greater degree to which one believes in a higher power, the greater degree to which they will believe almost anything, so to exists a correlation between the belief in malevolent supernatural beings or forces, such as Satan coincide with a willingness to believe almost anything. Part of this is due to us humans being pattern seeking beings, that will often accept a wrong pattern over no pattern, another aspect is a desire to feel important, that one has special knowledge beyond the grasp of their fellow humans, a desire to feel important and or special. If such beliefs were benign and thus having no impact other then to oneself, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Sadly, the faithful have not only proven they are willing to abandon and reject their loved ones, simply because their faith tells them their loved one's, adoption of a different denomination or religion, letting go of their religious belief, having accepted their sexuality, etc, are evil deeds. The faithful are often quick to point out the hypocrisy of every other religious view, but their own; siting their own as the one true faith. The fact we have millions of Christians cheering the establishment of a US Embassy in Jerusalem, not due to it heralding in a new era of peace between Israel and Palestine, but instead as a sign Jerusalem and thus Israel will soon fall so as to call forth the second coming of Jesus, in spite of the fact Jesus himself said he would return within a generation. When you have millions praying for such devastation and loss of human life, you can't say religious belief isn't what is holding back the social development of humanity.

    I went to a Grateful Dead concert and it looked to me like everyone was having a great time, what a great “vibe”. Then I saw a jackass groping a woman in the crowd who was clearly upset about it. Later, I saw a guy sitting semi-conscious in a puddle of his own vomit. Does anyone think the “vibe” was the same for those 2 individuals? “Vibe” is our own personal interpretation of an experience. You can be in a room full of thousands of happy people and yet there is still fear, pain and misery. Case closed.

    I've only found two Juan clips, but if he calls back again, maybe try and suss out if he believes reality and metaphor are interchangeable. He expresses the sentiment that something described as "enchanting" or being "under a spell" means that there is an enchanter/spell caster, for instance. A lot of conspiracy types do this "deduction by thesaurus" process (God is love, love is blind, Ray Charles is blind, Ray Charles is god). because they mistake words for the things they represent.

    You are right but the terms are tied through the origin of the word medicine. BUT the Wicans and witches who practiced using herbs and other elixirs for healing in early pharmaceutical discovery were naturalists testing and using chemistry. It was the ignorant theists that labelled them black magic for daring to do a better job than prayer to god. They did the same thing when they accused atheists of being satanists. They become unhinged by sharp skeptical minds that have the curiosity to probe how the world works because it threatens their delusional world view.

    My girlfriend told me that she was disappointed because she thought I was more open-minded. You know what she was disappointed that I didn't believe? Magic. This is actually not uncommon thinking at all, and that's scary. I meet loads of people who believe in witchcraft, voodoo, ghosts, fortune tellers, astrology, etc... My girlfriend believes in all of those but not God, while I believe in none of those. It's hard for me to grasp how someone could genuinely believe these things while having no evidence that they're real, she believes a ghost story her friend told her where big X's showed up on an old family photo when IT'S NOT POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE COULD'VE TOUCHED IT.... When obviously it either was touched, or the entire story is false. I am told that I'm not open-minded all the time over things like this.

    You miss the point. It's extremely difficult to reason with a crazy person, and Juan comes across as crazy. For example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6GczrOSobmXfJM.html Gene Ray came up with a "theory" known as Time Cube. It's utter nonsense, but he was still invited to speak at colleges on the subject. There were students who tried to debate him, but only made themselves look like bullies.

    Guys I don't know exactly how mental health care works in the USA, but, as we see often on this show there are people that are not just strong believers but that without joke seriously need professional help. In some cases you should consider them to point in that direction for their own good, it's not less serious than any terminal desease.

    That’s only because Juan was jumping from one weird “belief “ to another....there was sooooo many wacky statements to reply to!! That’s why they asked him to call back. Voices! Spells! Vibes! Majic! Even I couldn’t keep up the the crazy that is Juan! Truly a piñata of religious magical thinking based on no scientific evidence whatsoever. As far as magic, again no scientific evidence, falls under the rules of replicating an experiment exactly every time with the same outcome. So bring the magic and replicate the “spell” by you then replicate it by others exactly as you have multiple times WITH THE VERY SAME OUTCOME. That’s evidence, that’s proof. And if others replicated that spell EXACTLY and gets a different outcome, that just proves it’s a religious belief system not real scientific proof it’s real. Example of this is this equation ( or magical spell for others?) NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2. CO2 gas is produced EVERY TIME. It can be replicated on every continent on the planet. Please provide a magical spell that can be replicated every time by anyone on any place on the planet with EXACTLY the same result. THAT would be the greatest find of a lifetime. But I digress, Juan just had too many seriously off the charts and when challenged, he could not provide any cognitive argument to substantiate his “theory”. What a piñata!!

    Peter also walked on water, but because his faith wasn't strong enough, he started to sink. I think that is a lesson for all of us. You must exercise your faith to strengthen it. If you have enough faith, you could get your dog to recite poetry. Or fly to the moon by flapping your arms.

    Amazing that people can be so bereft of education and think that hearing voices in your head is a good thing. It is a sign of mental problems. No matter what the voices are saying it is not a good thing. This is different then your own voice in your head. For instance if I count things I will count in my head or if I think about things I hear my own voice stating things or pondering and questioning things. This is not hearing voices in your head. This is simply internalising.
