I lived with anxiety and depression, unmedicated, for 20 years. I attempted to cure it through exercise, good food, being outside, and engaging myself in hobbies I love. I tried so hard that those things have become my life’s passion. However, no matter how enriched my life became, they never worked to cure the depression and anxiety. Last year, I took antidepressants for the first time, and they worked. By „worked“ I mean they cleared the fog to make me realize one, very important thing. My focus was always inward and I never aimed my attention at other people. I did in a cursory, self-serving kind of way, but I never really connected with anyone. The anti-depressants made me realize that I finally have that connection, and that‘s scary, but it‘s worth focusing on. I am currently off the medication, and functioning at a much better level than before…though it‘s a continuous process of growth. So, long-winded way to say: I couldn‘t agree more. Nice work.

Thanks so much for sharing this, glad you're feeling better!
I’ll have to check this out. I’ve been struggling with my (usually very well controlled) depression the past few months - ironically, I’ve been struggling more as the world opens back up.

As someone who has dealt with depression in the past, I can definitely say that antidepressants are not a magical solution. I like to think of them as a tool to help you recover. When I was feeling pretty severe anedhonia, bupropion helped me a lot to get up in the morning and have at least a bit of motivation. But without putting in the work to "fix your life", they will have a laughable effect in the long run. Its also important to recognize what is causing you your pain, is it something from the past that you need to work on with a psychologist or is it that you're living in a chaotic way, with no order and no purpose. Another point in favor of depression not being a chemical imbalance is that different antidepressants that work in different neurotransmitters, might work for the same person. A simple analogy that I like to make is thinking about alcohol, if you're feeling down and your drink a couple of beers you might feel a bit better, does that mean that you were feeling down because a lack of gaba in your brain? Or is it that an increase in gaba's effect, above the normal range, in the brain makes you feel better. We can think the same way about seretonin, is depression a lack of this monoamine in the brain, or is it that an increase of it, on the synapses of certain areas of the brain, makes you feel better.

This is incredibly well said. I like that comparison with alcohol, makes a lot of sense.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope those steps are valuable to you. The book goes into much more details on this but it isn't necessarily about earning respect and status but more about building a healthy relationship with them.

Read atomic habbits
I suggest Vivek Murthy’s ‘Together’ too.
A book that cured my depression was this: "Everything Will Be fine, I Promise" by Faouzi Zouhair. It's about life, depression, friendship, love, family and everything that every person goes through. 💙💙💙💙 It reminds us how being vulnerable and how people can make us feel good. The reading is smooth and each chapter is one less node. I really recommend it because it changed my perception of seeing and experiencing the world. I wish anyone who is going through a difficult time to heal. Have faith. this comment is for you. 💚💚💚
I have a theory that anti depressants lower your baseline for happiness so when you come off them you are worse than when you started, thus have to keep taking them forever. I would truly recommend people to avoid them, and only take them as a last resort like you have tried every other science backed intervention and after a few years nothing has worked.
