Looking but not seeing and Scary on the Ice!

After taking out a blind man on his tandem, Roy has a heightened awareness of looking at things but not really seeing them for what they really are. All this thinking while staying upright on the icy roads was not easy. I was impressed by how well my Schwalbe G1 Allround tyres performed in the icy conditions.- useless in deep mud but great on the ice!

If we do go out when it’s icy, then we stick to gritted roads and avoid the little back lanes. We sometimes just stick to the canal towpath. The view is lovely coming down the hill into Long Clawson, I often get over 40mph down there. We restrict our rides to 30-40 miles in the winter, as it just gets too cold once you get to around 2pm.

Brrrrr! That looked cold! Little frost here but after weeks of heavy rain the tracks are just slippery mud. I take corners very carefully but my wife goes along as if it was mid summer. I warn her that it's slippery but she carries on. So far she's not had an off, fingers crossed she doesn't. I hope you'll squeeze in another video before Christmas? Maybe Carols from Lincoln with Wendy as soloist. With shorter, colder, days cutting back on distance makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing your ride.

I have asked her to at least learn the second line of some carols, so we shall see. I’m just putting the finishing touches to an episode you’ll get this weekend and we are going out on Friday, so hopefully two before Christmas. Another great ride, Roy. We seem to be having a proper winter here in Ukraine with temperatures as low as minus 6-7 degrees, and everything is covered in snow. I look forward to next summer and hope to accomplish the ride that I had to give up this year on account of the war. I want to travel to Chernivtsy by train together with my touring bike and then come back to Kyiv on a bicycle. Chernivtsy is a city in the western Ukraine around 800km away from Kyiv, so the way back would probably take a week with loads of gorgeous places to see on the way. Merry Christmas.

Don't want to rub it in but today it's in the upper 60s 😁 but tomorrow rainstorm, cold and high winds. Getting ready to go for my ride while I have the chance. 🚴‍♀️ Lovely views to enjoy on your ride. My routes take me thru neighborhoods but I do get to see some wonderful homes and, this time of year, really great holiday decorations. Charles sounds like quite a fellow. It's nice that he has someone to navigate that tandem and ride with him. I will definitely keep an eye out for the video of the trike riders. Trike riding isn't much different but they do handle differently. Hoping you and Wendy with your respective families all have a fun and safe holiday season. 🎄✨️

Trike riding sounds like a good idea on icy roads! Here on the Oregon coast- my limit for cold weather riding is about 45degrees F. We have had so much rain the past couple of weeks that flooding and landslides are a problem. Last week a section of hwy. 101 (the main coastal highway) was closed for several hours due to trees blown down by high winds. I love riding up the forest service roads through the tree tunnels but on a windy day that can be risky. When we lived in Maryland, I rode on the C&O Canal Trail as my main route for riding. I was out on the towpath when a thunderstorm rolled in and I was rushing to get back to my car and a big old tree blew over across the path. It was just a few yards behind me and scared the heck out of me and made me realize just how a few seconds difference saved me! Loving your content!

Late to this show. You won't catch me out riding in those conditions these days. Rouvy, BigRingVR and Open Road apps for me. Happy to be called a fair weather cyclist.🙂 Wendy shouldn't be put off audax riding due to the time limits. They are quite charitable with times between controls and average speeds can be between 10-19mph for slowest allowed time and quickest allowed times (approx.). Does it matter if you don't finish inside the set times? For most, not really. Just enjoy the ride and social aspect. As for next year, the Dragon Ride sportive is the main event and I hope to do a lot more audax rides after the disastrous year I've just had.

I do like a cloud, me. also loved the blue blue blue. don't envy you that 'chilly' weather though. after 23 years in Hokkaido, where winter is 5 months long, and temperatures not uncommonly don't rise above zero C for a month at a time, with lows of down to minus 20, and 6 metres of snow (needless to say, riding was lmited to the non-icy half of the year, I'm delighted to now live in a spot with no snow, no zeros, lots of blue, and a thrilling view.
