Line Stripping Mackinaw Trout at Fallen Leaf Lake (South Lake Tahoe Area)

I go on an "essential trip" to obtain food at Fallen Leaf Lake near Emerald Bay, South Lake Tahoe and get a nice Mackinaw Trout on light tackle.

Right! What was nerve racking was driving to lakes during the stay at home orders where I was one of the only cars on the road. I fished every week throughout the pandemic stay at home orders and I have several clips on my lakes and reservoirs fishing playlist where I make it clear in the beginning I was at the lake for the essential task of obtaining food. I figured if I got hassled I could show the video in court as evidence. Some videos even have ridiculous titles like "obtaining a pandemic food supply". Last time I checked we were still singing the star spangled banner so there was no way I was following those, what we now know to be, made up pandemic measures. They will have to pry my fishing rod from my cold dead hand!

This is the only time I have fished here. The spot I landed in at this lake was shallow a bit of a distance to where it dropped off. It was a far cast. Lake Tahoe has been slow so far from shore this year but I've still hit some quality fish. I have a lot of spots on my lake Tahoe shore fishing playlist but with the age of your kids I would recommend Cave Rock state park in NV or Emerald Bay. You can drive to the water at Cave rock but Emerald Bay might require either hiking down a mile to the lake or, if it's available, paying a day use fee to drive down where the boat camp is. It's my understanding that both state licenses are good for lake Tahoe but with all regulations I encourage people to confirm all regulations for themselves from official sources. This type of fishing can be slow so bring stuff to keep the kids occupied while you wait for a bite. If you think your kids could handle the mile hike up to Eagle Lake above Emerald Bay, there is good fishing there. I fish that lake multiple times in clips on my backcountry creeks and lakes fishing playlist and I have the hike on my hiking and backpacking playlist. If you are interested in how I rig up for bait fishing, I go into detail on my fishing tips playlist in my clip "rigging up for reservoir trout" and I also have a collection of videos that will take you from the store to the waterfront. If you go to Eagle Lake, my basic jig fishing and fly fishing videos might be useful but you could also baitfish. There should be snow available to keep fish fresh for the hike out. It's great you are taking your kids fishing. I hope the information you can gain from my channel playlists can help you be successful. Good luck.

If you are curious as to how I rig up, my clip "My general technique for deep water reservoir trout" shows in detail how I approach lake fishing with bait. For Lake Tahoe itself, I shorten my leaders and move up to a 1/2 OZ slip sinker so I can cast far which has been a requirement on every shore fishing situation I have encountered so far. This time of year, be careful of spots with rocks you need to climb on because of ice. I have several clips for other lakes in the area that are also good options to check out if you can get to them. Prosser Creek Reservoir, Boca Reservoir, and Donner are usually accessible although Prosser Creek has a short dirt road that could be problematic if you don't have a good 4x4. Good luck. Hope you get some action.

I do not think so. It is my understanding that only Lake Tahoe itself is eligible for both State Licenses because it sits on the State Line. I always recommend confirming all regulations for yourself before heading out. I believe licensing for Lake Tahoe in California is under the 'fishing license section of the regulation guide and for Nevada it is listed under the special regulations for the Western Region. I have a lot of Lake Tahoe fishing content on my 'lakes and reservoirs' playlist for my channel.

For Lake Tahoe itself, if it's private there will be private property signs. Cave Rock State Park on the Nevada side is an easy place to fish and both state Licenses are good anywhere on the Lake. If you go to my Lakes and Reservoirs Playlist, I have a few clips on for Lake Tahoe that might give you ideas of where to fish and then I have clips for several reservoirs within driving distance of the the Tahoe area. On my fishing clips playlist I have a couple of clips that show exactly how I rig up if you are interested. The clip "rigging up for reservoir trout'" should do it but there is one other that provides additional information. For lake Tahoe, I use 1/2OZ slip sinkers and shorten my leaders for farther casting ability. Good luck.

It was really shallow where I was fishing too. I had to shorten my leaders and cast way out just to reach the edge of the drop off. The temperatures were also much cooler and there was little activity on the lake in the early spring when I was there. most of those mackinaws are probably way down deep this time of year. Generally speaking, lake and reservoir fishing is best late fall through spring. I have a clip about why cold weather trout fishing gets hot. Summer fishing can be tough which is something I might have to overcome when I hike into Desolation Wilderness above Fallen Leaf Lake on Friday!
